Sakasama no Patema
サカサマのパテマ
Patema Inverted

This movie is life changing. You will walk out of the theater, living room, bedroom, or whatever you watched it in staring at the ceiling to make sure that you have something to stand on in the event that gravity were to suddenly invert. The concept on it's own is revolutionary. The CAMERA, oh my God, I haven't seen cinematography like this since Bakemonogatari. Watching the characters compensate for and interact with an upside down world while discovering the truth is thrilling. The amount of foreshadowing is insane, and only becomes apparent upon re-watching. The art is beautiful, with extremely detailed underground scenes and vibrant, blue open skies. Though the dialog can at times be generic, it conveys the emotions of the characters well and is very fitting while staying "down to earth". The voice acting is sublime. You can completely empathize with the fear, anger, sadness, relief, and almost every other human emotion that the characters display. All of this comes together to make a 10/10 movie you can enjoy again and again. If I were to have one complaint about this film, it would be that it isn't long enough. There is so much more that could be done with this world, it could have a 3 season, 36 episode show.

High School Physics and forces resonates with this film. A film about 2 different types of humans, the biggest difference between both are their inverted gravity physics. This premise might not appeal to the anime community alone but slap a couple of opposite inverted and an opposition government and you've essentially reached the level of Makoto Shinkai. If I had to say, this film seems like the source of inspiration of Makoto Shinkai's recent work 'Weathering with You'. However, let's get into why I rated this film so highly. ** Please be informed that SPOILERS will appear in my review from here-on out ** Plot: The main hook for this film was the antagonizing force and overall dystopian conditions, the premise in which this film is set also makes for a very controversial situation. That being said, I feel the film accurately executes the notion of different inverted or opposite ways of living - The main strength being the risks involved in exploring taboo land by Patema. The story sets to question the reality of Patema's universe, Patema is forced to believe that the society she resides in is of normality and consider outsiders to be bat-men who are mysteriously upside down; However, the opposite is true for Age where society he resides in is the normality and thus refer to Patema's people as the 'inverted'. This idea is very deep and requires ongoing interpretation as the plot develops which entices the user to view more to understand more. Art & Sound: I didn't realize this film was released in 2013 from the art & sound, I would say the animation style is on par with anime released extremely recently, I guess the quality of animation will be timeless for a while now. I really enjoyed the animation none the less, for studios I've personally never heard of producing a film that I've also never heard of at a high standard must mean I'm sleeping on a lot of potential. Although it doesn't triumph over recent works by Makoto Shinkai and his reputation, I'd say it sets a high standard in the industry for what is really reliant on both plot and animation. I wasn't as invested in the VA so I didn't really pay attention as much but I wouldn't say that the audio was this film's shortcomings - It's probably been perfected to the point you wouldn't notice or focus on it. As such both art & sound are near flawless! Character: As mentioned in the plot section of this review, we aren't exactly fed information within the first 10 minutes of the film. In all honesty, I didn't understand what was happening until Age and Patema first met each other. However, as the plot developed all characters developed proportionally, beginning with a first person view of a stern evil looking man finally made sense toward the end of the film; I still haven't confirmed if it is true but I suspect it was Lagos being held captive (the ending where Lagos is captured after Age's father attempts to leave in the balloon supports this assumption) This is just an example of the depth this film goes to in order to force the viewer to think and constantly reference current events and characters to the past. For that, I became instantly addicted with the film... Enjoyment: you can tell I enjoyed this film from the extremely high rating. However, what I'd say was missing from the film was the antagonizing force - Age and Patema as well as the other underground inverted defeated the commander/governor Izamura without much fighting. None the less, the scenes where they do fight were fairly interesting for a film that isn't solely dependent on action to develop the narrative. Amazing watch, I can't believe I haven't seen it in the 7 years it's been released...

Pros: - Extremely creative concept, and great execution as well - Story is very good - Animation looks amazing - Background music is quite diverse, yet still creates the desired effects for each scene - Great world building. You feel very immersed into the world created here. - Tense scenes work amazing (especially if you are afraid of heights like I am.) Cons: - Villain is rather cliche and boring. - (SPOILERS) It might be nice to know if the gravity in this world becomes fixed for people. Perhaps, also, it might be nice to see some sort of after credits scene where we see peace between Aiga and the inverts. (SPOILER END) Conclusion: As a kid, I had an idea for a story similar to this one in which the Earth's gravity becomes reversed and people have to live indoors at all times. For a long time I had this idea in the back of my mind, but could not create any sort of story around that idea. Luckily for me, I discovered this film which took this idea and turned it into something truly unique. That being said, I did get something completely different from what I expected. I expecting something similar to the idea I had, in which everybody was subjected to the reversal of gravity. Instead they opted to go into the direction of the people affected being a small minority of people in an Orwellian totalitarian regime. While I have seen this kind of enemy a million times, I think it actually works here because the overall concept is something that I have never seen presented in any film. With all this said, is it still a good movie? Yes. If you're looking for something to satisfy the Haiyo Miyazaki shaped hole in your heart with some elements of "1984" and acrophobia mixed in, this is the film for you.

Director Yasuhiro Yoshiura had given us before “Eve no Jikan”, so I had high expectations for this movie. He released the first 25 minutes as a series of OVAs in 2012, before finally releasing the full movie the following year. The film’s story revolves around a Romeo-and-Juliet romance between teens who belong to regions whose forces of gravity function in directions opposite to each other. The movie’s “inverted gravity” premise is a very intriguing one, and it was for me its most attractive feature. But there’s something curious about the concept for which I could find no explanation: It's remarkably similar to that of a Canadian-French movie called “Upside Down” which, same as the OVAs, was released in 2012. The similarities between the two leave little doubt that one of them was “inspired” by the other. Of course, the doubts about the exact origin of the concept do not detract from the fact that the gravity-inversion premise is both new and interesting. In addition to that, the visuals and soundtrack were both well done. However, the movie overall fails to deliver, and the main reason is that its plot and characters are heavily clichéd. The use of clichés was so extensive that it made me feel as if I’ve watched this same movie dozens of times before, only with different settings and character appearances (I found the depiction of the villain particularly cringe-worthy). Unlikely coincidences, another sign of mental laziness, were relied on to advance the plot. Overall, I find it unfortunate that such an intriguing premise had been let down by the general lack of creativity in devising both plot and characters. The film had a message to deliver, and that message was the main focus throughout its 99 minutes. It’s basically that people from different countries and cultures should get along with each other and that xenophobia is evil. The film’s message is undoubtedly noble, but given the lack of subtlety in conveying it, the clichéd tools Yoshiura used for that, and the pretentious use of an ending theme sung in Esperanto, one couldn’t help viewing it as another cliché in a movie already full of clichés.

The concept and story is actually great. Many people who gives this anime a bad rating is because they didn't understand everything in the movie. It's a nice and interesting movie. I recommend it. (Reviews doesn't have to be longer than this, waay to many people write much more than necessary) so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank. so im gonna fill this out with just blank.

Up is down and down is up, yet fear is everywhere... Sakasama no Patema is probably one of the more interesting anime movies with extremely strong undertones of racism and the fear of the unknown all packaged under one of the literal topsy turfy world building (in a good sense) LA has seen in a while. Mild spoilers ahead... Sakasama no Patema's undertones goes as far as being or having the personality of an outsider being labeled as an inverted. Being "inverted" has connotations on both sides of Sakasama no Patema *The "true" world of the "Aigans", where it's an Orwellian 1984 future, another words being disgraced and even acting outside of the government means your an outlier and almost seen as a criminal. Heck even the thought of flying in the true world is linked to being branded a weirdo, a heretic to the true world as it has the connotations of "flying to the sky" linked to the inverted people that "fell" to the sky. *The "another" world, though not a dictatorship like the true world is, has negative connotations of "falling" due to their nature of being upside down, it brings fear to the another world and only the brave can venture to the true world but that fear also brings in laws to keep people's fear in check. Going back to the true world, the schisms of the inverted are there speaks of something else as well, mainly of the people in the sky being devoured also has a different interpretation as it were, like the "people in the sky" leads to "aliens" leads to "gajin's" as a result which brings us to what is essentially a subtextual element of "racism" that the true world has of the inverted or "another world" at the same time..subtextual yes, but the undertones of this element is kinda prevalent throughout the movie especially considering the dictatorship and Orwellian future of the "true world's" settings. However one of the core aspects of this is fear, there is fear on both sides, from the other world's fear of "falling" to the true world's fear of the unknown in the sky of flying and branding heretics that wants to go to the sky as a result, and oddly enough this dynamic is crushed by you guessed it.......an Aigan and an "Inverted" together. For characters however, Sakasama no Patema's focus are on our main protagonists Age voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto and the titular Patema voiced by Yukiyo Fujii are "limited" to say the least and LA sees Sakasama no Patema's world building is on display more than the characters and the characters themselves are just going through the motions because the plot said so. Age is your typical bland main male protagonist who's a dreamer of sorts, while Patema is the maniac pixie girl but is kinda an ojou who gets a bit of the damsel in distress syndrome that thankfully gets remedied quickly. While the main protagonists gives us ALOT of information concerning their worlds as well as when one of them are "inverted", they really don't change...ok they do change in a ways, mainly of razing their fears of being inverted and the "consequences" of that but the world building is one, more pronounced and more interesting than the main protagonists of Sakasama no Patema, not that the characters are absolutely bland or change by the end of it as both Patema and Age are linked to a subplot line concerning Lagos and Age's dad. LA is still thankful that some development came from our main protagonist that and our main villain of Sakasama no Patema, Izamura voiced by Takaya Hashi who just oozes intense regal villainy. What LA finds ironic about Izamura is that he too wants to see what the skies are like HOWEVER he forbids anyone to the point of conspiracy killings and fear mongers anyone with his rule of the unknown skies as a result and even tracks down any underground inverts for his own desires, seriously Izamura is a villain YOU WANT TO HATE AND TO GET HIS COMEUPPANCE and he DOES in the most ironic fate he gets in Sakasama no Patema. In terms of animation Studio Rikka and Purple Cow Studio Japan, the animation has a nice color palette giving us the obvious undertones of backgrounding of the underground "another world" of schizotech grunge brown to the more open but closed off "true world" and finally the unknown "skies". The character designs are pretty distinct as well with the coloring almost used to pastel textures (the hair for instances..especially Patema). The thing with Sakasama no Patema is the perspective changes it does to show how the character's focus changes from one to another and clearly shows us in a dizzying way of "perspective", sure it's a simple 180 degree and is used QUITE often but LA liked how they flipped perspective showing us what the main focus is looking at which kinda gives us without even speaking what the characters feel at times. The voice acting is decent enough from Yukiyo Fujii, Nobuhiko Okamoto and Takaya Hashi who has prominence in Sakasama no Patema and yeah LA will give props to those three voice actors as they did breath life into their characters and by extension the world as well if LA will take it that far. Due to the character focus, many of the other voice actors don't get screentime, with some exceptions like Porta voiced by Shintarou Oohata, a friend of Patema and if LA is grasping at straws, the villagers of Patema's and Kaho voiced by Maaya Uchida a classmate of Age who only gets like what 3 scenes in the entire movie? But nonetheless LA thought the voice cast was decent enough to sit through. Sakasama no Patema is a very intriguing and interesting movie about fear of the unknown with a bit of racism into the mix with an interesting and fun concept such as "literal inverted" people and how even this gimmick is played with and used extremely well both thematically and plot-wise to what Sakasama no Patema gives to us. Sure for LA the characters are lacking and such however what it gives in return are interesting worlds and conspiracies along with strong themes of disobedience towards those in power and fear itself being tested that leans itself to be an entertaining watch. ˙ɥɔʇɐʍ ƃuᴉuᴉɐʇɹǝʇuǝ uɐ ǝq oʇ ɟlǝsʇᴉ suɐǝl ʇɐɥʇ pǝʇsǝʇ ƃuᴉǝq ɟlǝsʇᴉ ɹɐǝɟ puɐ ɹǝʍod uᴉ ǝsoɥʇ spɹɐʍoʇ ǝɔuǝᴉpǝqosᴉp ɟo sǝɯǝɥʇ ƃuoɹʇs ɥʇᴉʍ ƃuolɐ sǝᴉɔɐɹᴉdsuoɔ puɐ splɹoʍ ƃuᴉʇsǝɹǝʇuᴉ ǝɹɐ uɹnʇǝɹ uᴉ sǝʌᴉƃ ʇᴉ ʇɐɥʍ ɹǝʌǝʍoɥ ɥɔns puɐ ƃuᴉʞɔɐl ǝɹɐ sɹǝʇɔɐɹɐɥɔ ǝɥʇ ∀˥ ɹoɟ ǝɹnS ˙sn oʇ sǝʌᴉƃ ɐɯǝʇɐԀ ou ɐɯɐsɐʞɐS ʇɐɥʍ oʇ ǝsᴉʍ-ʇold puɐ ʎllɐɔᴉʇɐɯǝɥʇ ɥʇoq llǝʍ ʎlǝɯǝɹʇxǝ pǝsn puɐ ɥʇᴉʍ pǝʎɐld sᴉ ʞɔᴉɯɯᴉƃ sᴉɥʇ uǝʌǝ ʍoɥ puɐ ǝldoǝd ,,pǝʇɹǝʌuᴉ lɐɹǝʇᴉl,, sɐ ɥɔns ʇdǝɔuoɔ unɟ puɐ ƃuᴉʇsǝɹǝʇuᴉ uɐ ɥʇᴉʍ xᴉɯ ǝɥʇ oʇuᴉ ɯsᴉɔɐɹ ɟo ʇᴉq ɐ ɥʇᴉʍ uʍouʞun ǝɥʇ ɟo ɹɐǝɟ ʇnoqɐ ǝᴉʌoɯ ƃuᴉʇsǝɹǝʇuᴉ puɐ ƃuᴉnƃᴉɹʇuᴉ ʎɹǝʌ ɐ sᴉ ɐɯǝʇɐԀ ou ɐɯɐsɐʞɐS ˙ɥƃnoɹɥʇ ʇᴉs oʇ ɥƃnouǝ ʇuǝɔǝp sɐʍ ʇsɐɔ ǝɔᴉoʌ ǝɥʇ ʇɥƃnoɥʇ ∀˥ ssǝlǝɥʇǝuou ʇnq ¿ǝᴉʌoɯ ǝɹᴉʇuǝ ǝɥʇ uᴉ sǝuǝɔs Ɛ ʇɐɥʍ ǝʞᴉl sʇǝƃ ʎluo oɥʍ ǝƃ∀ ɟo ǝʇɐɯssɐlɔ ɐ ɐpᴉɥɔ∩ ɐʎɐɐW ʎq pǝɔᴉoʌ oɥɐʞ puɐ s,ɐɯǝʇɐԀ ɟo sɹǝƃɐllᴉʌ ǝɥʇ 'sʍɐɹʇs ʇɐ ƃuᴉdsɐɹƃ sᴉ ∀˥ ɟᴉ puɐ ɐɯǝʇɐԀ ɟo puǝᴉɹɟ ɐ 'ɐʇɐɥoO noɹɐʇuᴉɥS ʎq pǝɔᴉoʌ ɐʇɹoԀ ǝʞᴉl suoᴉʇdǝɔxǝ ǝɯos ɥʇᴉʍ 'ǝɯᴉʇuǝǝɹɔs ʇǝƃ ʇ,uop sɹoʇɔɐ ǝɔᴉoʌ ɹǝɥʇo ǝɥʇ ɟo ʎuɐɯ 'snɔoɟ ɹǝʇɔɐɹɐɥɔ ǝɥʇ oʇ ǝnp ˙ɹɐɟ ʇɐɥʇ ʇᴉ ǝʞɐʇ llᴉʍ ∀˥ ɟᴉ llǝʍ sɐ plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ uoᴉsuǝʇxǝ ʎq puɐ sɹǝʇɔɐɹɐɥɔ ɹᴉǝɥʇ oʇuᴉ ǝɟᴉl ɥʇɐǝɹq pᴉp ʎǝɥʇ sɐ sɹoʇɔɐ ǝɔᴉoʌ ǝǝɹɥʇ ǝsoɥʇ oʇ sdoɹd ǝʌᴉƃ llᴉʍ ∀˥ ɥɐǝʎ puɐ ɐɯǝʇɐԀ ou ɐɯɐsɐʞɐS uᴉ ǝɔuǝuᴉɯoɹd sɐɥ oɥʍ ᴉɥsɐH ɐʎɐʞɐ┴ puɐ oʇoɯɐʞO oʞᴉɥnqoN 'ᴉᴉɾnℲ oʎᴉʞn⅄ ɯoɹɟ ɥƃnouǝ ʇuǝɔǝp sᴉ ƃuᴉʇɔɐ ǝɔᴉoʌ ǝɥ┴ ˙sǝɯᴉʇ ʇɐ lǝǝɟ sɹǝʇɔɐɹɐɥɔ ǝɥʇ ʇɐɥʍ ƃuᴉʞɐǝds uǝʌǝ ʇnoɥʇᴉʍ sn sǝʌᴉƃ ɐpuᴉʞ ɥɔᴉɥʍ ʇɐ ƃuᴉʞool sᴉ snɔoɟ uᴉɐɯ ǝɥʇ ʇɐɥʍ sn ƃuᴉʍoɥs ǝʌᴉʇɔǝdsɹǝd pǝddᴉlɟ ʎǝɥʇ ʍoɥ pǝʞᴉl ∀˥ ʇnq uǝʇɟo Ǝ┴I∩Q pǝsn sᴉ puɐ ǝǝɹƃǝp 08Ɩ ǝldɯᴉs ɐ s,ʇᴉ ǝɹns ',,ǝʌᴉʇɔǝdsɹǝd,, ɟo ʎɐʍ ƃuᴉʎzzᴉp ɐ uᴉ sn sʍoɥs ʎlɹɐǝlɔ puɐ ɹǝɥʇouɐ oʇ ǝuo ɯoɹɟ sǝƃuɐɥɔ snɔoɟ s,ɹǝʇɔɐɹɐɥɔ ǝɥʇ ʍoɥ ʍoɥs oʇ sǝop ʇᴉ sǝƃuɐɥɔ ǝʌᴉʇɔǝdsɹǝd ǝɥʇ sᴉ ɐɯǝʇɐԀ ou ɐɯɐsɐʞɐS ɥʇᴉʍ ƃuᴉɥʇ ǝɥ┴ ˙(ɐɯǝʇɐԀ ʎllɐᴉɔǝdsǝ˙˙sǝɔuɐʇsuᴉ ɹoɟ ɹᴉɐɥ ǝɥʇ) sǝɹnʇxǝʇ lǝʇsɐd oʇ pǝsn ʇsoɯlɐ ƃuᴉɹoloɔ ǝɥʇ ɥʇᴉʍ llǝʍ sɐ ʇɔuᴉʇsᴉp ʎʇʇǝɹd ǝɹɐ suƃᴉsǝp ɹǝʇɔɐɹɐɥɔ ǝɥ┴ ˙,,sǝᴉʞs,, uʍouʞun ǝɥʇ ʎllɐuᴉɟ puɐ ,,plɹoʍ ǝnɹʇ,, ɟɟo pǝsolɔ ʇnq uǝdo ǝɹoɯ ǝɥʇ oʇ uʍoɹq…

The rules said that I shouldn't include summaries and spoilers so I'd best try not to. Anyway.. If I would live in a place as such. I'd do. No questions. The real question here is... who's inverted? To explain how I rated it 10/10 (Outstanding) really easily is because.. From Arts, Sounds to Story.. It's just something I'm looking for. The surrealism of an environment, the way they made different perspectives for those who live on it. The art is especially amazing, to be honest, I wasn't expecting much at first, but it's worth it. Now, the main factors is that you'll be able to gouge your eyes out seeing different.. no.. a myriad amount of scenery, from an Underground Civilization, Inverted City, Mechanical Sky, Ruins of the Surface, The building's Abyss, The moon's ring and much more.. The Music is simply fantastic, It has a touch of fantasy in it and the feels of Sci-fi and realism. For the romance part (yes there is) it's blocked the view, damn it... but they did do it. (pure minded people should be able to understand the context) I enjoyed every single frame of this, mind the story is much of a mystery in itself.. It's like I'm looking into one's own world in their mind. It's a visual festival carefully woven into a wonderful anime (animation). It's worth putting along Van Gogh's works (I'm over-complimenting it, but It's my opinion) There's a lot to it than meets the eye. The questions left unanswered, the curiosity that's really trying to kill you (not that much, but still curious) and everything else that I'm wanting in an anime and stories (I want this in real life too, to be honest) I can't say that much that'll be helpful for anyone who is willing to watch, wants to watch and is going to watch... also those who have watched. It's simply something I enjoyed, it feels like time went fast on me tho... If anything else... I'd say this is worth watching, It's got all I wanted (which just makes me want to see something more) I just feel nice watching this that made me want to write a review.

Oh wow, honestly this is such an amazing movie, it has a great and intriguing story, the timing for the plot twists is really well done, everytime you think you have the story figured out something happens and its mind-blowing. The characters are very well written and the bonds they create and the way interact is so heartwarming. I absolutely love Age, he's brave and loyal and Patema is adorably curious and cheerful. The art is beautiful, it was the reason why decided to watch it tbh and the soundtrack was really good, making every scene so much more meaningful. The side characters were nicely done, I loved Porta, he was such a cutie. Honestly I can't do more than talking about how good this movie was, if you like sci-fi and light hearted story, I can asure you, you'll love this movie!!!

Just an fyi if you're looking for an expert review go away this is just my first "review" of a movie I thought was really good and one of the better things I've seen as of lately. (I've been on a downward slope of trying to find any good anime to watch, anyway lets get into whatever... this, is) wow, just wow fucking great movie I"ve never seen a show or movie with this inverted idea but it was very interesting and very good there are no plot holes or anything, while the idea of it is far fetched, (then again it's fucking anime so don't think too much about science and physics because that will ruin the entire movie for you.) it was very enjoyable and I don't have any issues with it. I want to rate it a 10/10 but it wasn't the best thing I've ever seen, it was definitely lacking in things like audio and the visuals were nice but could make you sick because well it's disorienting and while it has been one of the best if not the best I've seen in quite a while especially for being so detailed, having a great story, and decent characters in just an hour and 30 minutes I feel like it could definitely have more but just because I want more doesn't mean I'll give it a bad rating so yes, My rating - 9/10 I highly recommend watching it, I liked it, you might like it if your into the sci-fi, fantasy genres like I am, I absolutely love sci-fi and fantasy, but again if you don't like to watch things that are just like hey fuck you physics :D ... Then don't watch this But I enjoyed it so I will recommend watching this if you don't oh well, and sorry for this being all over the place if you actually read this and find it helpful... somehow... then thank you. Over time I will develop a system and not just say things like whoa that was cool because it's 1 am and I need to sleep cause I have a history test tomorrow. So yeah I'll post more later when I finish things and try to do better reviews, peace!

In this review I wont be bringing out all the negative and positive things, ill just talk about it a little bit. Also it is affected by my personal memories a little bit. For the people who dont want to read my long ass review heres the conclusion: Yes it is worth watching. Yes its really good. Go fucking watch it. Now for my review. Anime movies are definetly underrated and often overlooked, but I think that they can be better than anime in many ways like the powerful feeling I atleast get while watching movie intros. Harry Potter for example has a really spooky intro, Fast & Furious on the other hand has a really powerful intro with some rap music and car sounds. Another and I think the biggest thing anime movies can be better than anime in is just personal memories. Like I watched Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and so on, but I dont really remember or care about it to be honest. Movies like Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle really trigger alot of memories tho, maybe because I watched them like 20 times. Anyway, theyre not 200 episodes long and theyre memorable. For the actual review of this movie now. Sakasama no Patema is an awesome movie and I cant recommend it enough. Art is so cute and the characters are often just quietly staring at each other, like I swear this never happens in anime. Its just something that is unique to anime movies, I love it. The concept is probably the most interesting one ive ever seen. Gravity is inverted for some people, hard to explain, its just really good. It kinda feels like a childhood fantasy and I just cant express how much I love it. Story is perfect with the concept and pretty much flawless i dont care about the logic. Also its REALLY hard-hitting and sad, I have never cried while watching an anime, but this one hit me pretty bad. Probably because it just reminds me of my childhood. Romance is nothing crazy, but more satisfying than most full on romance shows, why? Its just so cute and those 69 hugs are goddamn beautiful. Once again, I fucking LOVE IT. I almost never pay attention to the music in anime unless its either really bad or really good. I noticed the music right from the intro up until the last minutes, if you couldnt guess already, it was beautiful. So about that intro, I was talking about how anime movies and movies in general have powerful intros in the beginning of this review and that definetly includes this one. It got me hyped right from the start and gave me that real powerful movie feeling. Its something incredible... im running out of words to describe this anime with. I guess that brings it to an end. Ive said everything I wanted to, for now atleast. This one was definetly a rollercoaster of memories for me. :) This has been a review of Sakasama no Patema by nox

"Patema: Inverted," after having initially seen the trailer back in 2013, this movie had been on and off my radar since. Through the trailer alone I was captivated by the concept of the "gravity" element and what gives purpose to the titles meaning. To cut the review short, yet succinct of my thoughts... ...much of the characters are tropes, but that doesn't equate to the film being bad, but illuminates a single honest flaw of the film. I think where this film truly shines is in concept being recognized through execution of this inverted world that gives perspective just that, perspective. Without spoiling anything, one could imagine that this being a film set amongst a dystopian backdrop or at least one that the viewer is introduced to amidst an early break in the first act, that there is a resounding message to be provided and received. In addition, it would be remiss if I were not to mention for art design sake of a very interesting mesh of steampunk and cyberpunk aesthetic for the 2 worlds. My only true complaint is that the direction perhaps could've been tighter to give/provide more depth to flesh out characters, say for example the militaristic despot leader (his zealot pseudo-religious perspective is weak) and even some scenes, characters and settings (Patema's steampunk home). Ultimately, I believe the execution of the concept was the adhesive holding everything together and it's in a matter of opinion I suppose that you, myself or we look at it together or separate in an upside-down or downside-up position, in which we absorb and receive this film. I for one rather enjoyed it, though as I said somethings could use adjusting, but it worked well enough especially in the last 10 minutes where everything can turn that upside-down perspective, right-side up... All-in-all, as I stroke the last few keys for this less than stellar review, I've come to think or rather have deduced that the title "Patema: Inverted" is meant to illude to Patema's (main character's) perspective, thus "Patema('s): Inverted (Perspective)" Preach!

Ah, where do I begin, this anime is as beautiful as the first time I watched it as a kid and wanted to rewatch it with my friend as my bird brain had forgotten what the show was even about. I'm glad I was able to rewatch this show and rekindle my love for it. The animation is very colorful and cheery. The scenery, the characters are all *chef's kiss* I loved every second of this show with it's stunning colours, I can't talk about the animation enough as it makes the show even more worth watching. To me, the animation alone deserves a solid ten outta ten the animation's great for real As the for the music, I've never really pay much attention to it irrespective of the show but not for this, the background music was heavenly as it beautifully supported the scenes they were in, I can't say the same for the fgm tho, tha shi was ass (not that I could make such music even if I tried). So for me the music gets a solid eight, it's certainly not the best I've heard but it gets the job done Patema and Age although kinda flat I'll admit but that fit form of flatness fits well into the verse and to be honest I think the antagonist carried the show, in my eyes at least. Now that I think about it he reminded me of the bishop? Pope? Pastor? Whatever he is in the hunchback of Notre dame, he didn't have any sad back story that'd make us sympathize with him, no, he was evil for the love of the game, I mean shiii I'd probably do the same things he did minus the blatant pedophilia of course. I also liked how the show gave some weight or feeling or whatever they call it to the background characters, the character development of the assistant guy (can't be arsed to remember his name)was refreshing to see as well. Characters get an eight for me In summary, patema inverted is a fricking awesome show which actually addresses a lot of racial discriminationin happening in the real world, the art is stunning, the music, decent, the characters, interesting to say the least coming together to create this beauty. This could have been a perfect ten had the main characters been more rounded, it gets a solid nine from me. Jolly good show

Sakasama no Patema is a sci/fi , adventure and romance movie revolving around the lives of two teenagers living in opposite worlds LITERALLY , they both have common characteristics which leads them to each other so that a journey of discovery , action , fantasy and love begins , A WORD OF ADVICE DON'T EAT ANYTHING WHILE WATCHING THIS MOVIE BECAUSE YOU NEED TO CONCENTRATE AND THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL FEEL DIZZY The movie takes on a story even by sci/fi measures is difficult to make the viewers believe yet it manages to do so and even manages to make it more complicated and adds depth to it that makes it more believable and creative with an interesting plot all this makes the movie's story the strongest element in it despite it not giving some aspects more time like the different worlds for example could have used more introduction than given The two main characters are to some sorts well written they maybe could have used a little more depth but this is easily not visible as the intriguing story hides this , the supporting characters are simple and you don't really feel you need more of them again because of the story , the villains however here we have a problem of being too linear and classic while there maybe little hints in their characters that there exists more but this is not well explored and a good villain in such a story is essential , and here i feel the need to say that this movie can easily fill a 12 eps anime season where the characters are given more time to progress and to add more depth to them and to show us more of the different worlds of each of the two characters . the art here ranges from average to good which only means that a good chance to make very good art was missed as the story clearly allows it also the music weren't that memorable but still wasn't bad . lastly this is without a doubt a hidden gem a very good movie that combines the best aspects of many genres with a good solid story that has beauty , adventuring , romance and struggle this is a definite must watch movie .

This is definitely one of those movies where the prospect of seeing another world is a whimsical notion, which means I would have really liked this more as a kid. When I was younger, I would brush off bad storytelling for the sake of spectacle (which is why Star Wars Episode II was my favourite movie for a while). However, my logical, adult brain started picking apart "plot holes" I wouldn't have thought of as a simple-minded child. But if you can move past the little things like that, this is an enjoyable movie. It would have been a little intense for me as a kid, but I still would have enjoyed it more then.

A really cool really fun adventure with gravity and two distinct worlds coming together. The plot isn't necessarily that deep even with its twisty nature, but the worldbuilding is strong enough to support the idea of two closed-off civilizations adjusting to this post-apocalyptic world of weird gravity stuff. I also liked the main couple; it's rare in Japanese animation to see characters so physically intimate, but obviously the movie requires it. Unfortunately the movie has about half the budget it needed to be something truly special. The animation is normally OK but nothing film-quality, and the use of CGI to skirt certain scenes and save money is often jarring. This may have been able to be a masterpiece-- it's far more imaginative and beautiful than its contemporary Children Who Chase Lost Voices-- but it got shafted by not being able to afford its own ambitions.

The movie has a great concept about people from two civilizations which fall in opposite directions. The idea of essentially falling upwards (from both perspectives) is unique and leads to some truly inventive scenarios where both Age (an unfortunately confusing name in English) and Patema have to hang on to each other and use their weight to become essentially weightless. It’s helped along by some excellent animation. Unfortunately, that one idea is really the only compelling and original element in it. Patema’s people are fairly typical tribesmen living in underground caverns. We don’t spend all that much time with them. Age’s people are living on the surface in a dystopian fascist society that suppresses all independent thought and loaths the idea of inverts (people who fall away from the earth) so much that they aren’t even permitted to look upwards. It’s a sterile and unwelcoming place, and while they do convey that in a wonderfully stark utilitarian way it doesn’t exactly draw you in. Indeed, every appearance of the city makes you want to see even less and get back to the beautiful natural and magical world of flight. Maybe that’s the point, but it’s just not very engaging. It doesn’t help that the leader is a gross caricature of every bad trait a human can have. The sheer glee with which he does evil things just to be evil is amazing. Why anyone would follow him is an utter mystery. More to the point, his constant harping on about sin and corruption just isn’t interesting as a motivation. I mean, the surface-dwellers have a reason to associate the inverts with danger (their ancestors were experimenting with harnessing gravity as an energy source and this caused their problem) but making it purely about sin and purity is boring and seems weak. At the very least their motives are insufficiently established, unless you consider a desire to be evil a motive. Age and Patema fare rather better since they both seem decent enough people. The hints of romance work well, although how they can make that work when each falls a different way must make for an amusing relationship. But again, they seem poorly motivated in all their actions. Patema at least falls into the curious young explorer archetype and has ties to a previous such person. Age seems to be a bit of a dissident, although it’s unclear exactly what this means beyond not being a dull automaton. Yet he immediately rescues and bonds with Patema. Okay, he’s not prejudiced, but why not? What are these kids taught? What are they supposed to think of inverts? I have no idea. And this doesn’t even seem a conscious rebellion, he simply sees a girl falling upwards and grabs her. His later character development is even less interesting. He never truly understood how scary it is to fall upwards? What a revelation. And since the villains have no real ideology beyond obedience, his confrontations with them are essentially ‘I understand how she feels’ ‘I don’t care’, and frankly that would have made a much better confrontation. There just isn’t a purpose behind the villains’ actions. I dunno. It’s not a bad film. It’s just an empty one. If the concept appeals to you and you’re just looking for some pretty eye candy then give it a try. Just don’t expect too much.

This is one disorientating movie! There are two types of people in this movie. Those that have had gravity inverted for them and those that have not. When the worlds of the two people collide through a mysterious hole in the ground which serves as a portal between their two worlds, chaos ensues. Patema is a girl who had heard of the stories about the surface of Earth with its sky and foliage from her friend Lagos, who mysteriously disappeared. When Patema accidentally falls through the portal, she is saved from floating away into the sky by Age, a boy from the city of Aiga that has his feet planted firmly on the earth. The bond that forms between the two causes them to fly through the sky for each other. Their dependency on each other to stay grounded is what creates a really subtle, yet present theme of romance that is embedded in the story perfectly. I did not go into this film expecting as much back and forth between the two worlds. I must say, for those people that don’t have amazing spatial awareness and are prone to getting lost, this film is not entirely easy to watch and does strain your brain. An ancient hatred by the people of Aiga about the ‘inverted’ creates a tension within the film as the tyrannical leaders trying to uphold the utopian society in Aiga brainwash all the children to believe that those that had gravity inverted and floated into the sky were sinners and only the pure people of Aiga got left into the Earth. Age is different though. His father had always wanted to uncover the secrets of the sky by building a hot air balloon, yet he died prematurely by an accident whilst trying to float away, leaving Age to dream on his behalf. Patema could not have encountered a more appropriate person after falling through the portal. Their relationship is cute and there is one particularly hilarious scene in which Patema is insistently pestering Age about coming back and not leaving her forever in a shed. Patema and Age literally have to cling to each other whenever they’re trying to make their way around Earth. The romance did feel a far fetched to develop so easily. I much prefer to interpret is a friendly devotion that developed between the two because they were both enchanted by each other and each other’s worlds. So back to the plot: the main conflict is uncovering the secrets behind the people of Aiga and Patema’s people. Where Patema’s people think of the people of Aiga as ‘bat people’ whenever they enter their underground world, the people of Aiga are unaware about the location of Patema’s people. Their focus is on maintaining law and order to uphold their perceived utopian (but in reality dystopian society). Though the people of Aiga wish to flush out the inverted ‘sinners,’ there are mysteries which the leaders of the city are going to great lengths to hide. Mysteries that are uncovered by the bond that develops between Aiga and Patema. I must say the plot twist is quite mind boggling and I really did not see it coming. Some plot holes regarding Patema and Age’s journey into the perceived city of ‘stars’ did quite irritate me because I was wondering why it was so uninhabited, but all in all, it was quite a cool concept that was fun to watch! The feel of the movie is mostly serious and mysterious, yet there are moments of suspense and also little moments of light hearted relief, like when Porta and Age are trying to make their way around a location, using their gravity powers to avoid being seen by a camera. The character design was simple, yet I really found myself loving the clothing that Patema and the ‘Inverted’ people were wearing. The backdrops of the movie are simply stunning. From the glimmering lights to the gorgeous cloudy, space-like atmosphere that Patema and Age traverse through when they are floating through space, it is extremely gorgeous! I didn’t find myself to be a fan of the soundtrack as I personally felt that sometimes the music was not fitting of what was going on, on the screen. The music did not capture me and help with the immersion, as say some of the Studio Ghibli films of the past have. All in all, the other character of note is the main villain, the evil leader of Aiga who is really against the Inverted people and wants to see them gone, no matter the cost. He does play a fair villain, fit with the crazy gene of wanting the ‘inverted’ people to be dependent on him so that he gets to amplify his own sense of power. When his secrets are revealed it’s oh so satisfying and that’s exactly what made this such a nice sci-if mystery. With Patema Inverted, I came for the romance but stayed for the intriguing and well-developed plot and stunning imagery. Go check out this cool (but dizzying!) film for yourself. Be prepared to go up and down and up and down…just remember, it all depends on perspective anyway!

What I can say? This anime has an easy to guess story, the plot twist is not too surprising, everything in the movie seems messed up, the pace of the movie is quite fast, watching the villain is quite annoying. The art style:8/10. yep, is good for 2013 anime The sound: 9/10. Its good Character: 5/10. The characters have vague pasts and their relationships are too predictable (I even guessed the relationships of the main characters after they first met). I quite dislike this anime, maybe because it doesn't suit me, but in my opinion it's quite okay In short: 6/10 (After watching it, I felt like my brain was actually turned upside down.)

Imagine walking on the ceiling of your room or any other closed environment & think about all the subtle changes that you might notice. You feel a bit dizzy now that gravity might work a bit differently, your pen might not work properly, you would have a hard time figuring out at all the upside down faces & objects, and you would probably feel way more awkward if you try to hug someone. By a small change in your perspective, your entire world looks and feels vastly different, which is fascinating. What's even more fascinating but equally terrifying, is when you think about "Falling" from this perspective. Where do you really fall? If you take a small peak outside of a door or a window under you, an endless sky will be waiting to make you disappear in a single second. It's different, confusing, insanely frightening but most of all, it's really fascinating. What "Patema Inverted" does is it takes this fascinating concept and breathes life to it. 15 minutes in and it gives you, what I recall as one of the grandiose shots in all Anime; showing a girl and a guy, falling into the sky. And from then on, you get pulled into its world and it'll amaze you through the end. The movie shines during its moments where it fills the screen showing its enormous world from different locations, especially moments involving the sky might even take your breath away. It's that good. While I really like this movie for its beautiful world, there are 2 main reasons why I think the movie couldn't become a truly unique Anime. 1. Boring religious views in a Sci-fi setting: What bothers me the most is how it refuses to elaborate on its dictatorship government. The movie says that "Scientific Experiment failure caused Gravity Inversion", but it makes very little sense when the main villain always barks his hate towards inverted people saying that 'God banished those cursed people into the sky' with his boring religious views and somehow took over a scientifically advanced city. This is neither to say I oppose religion (I'm a Hindhu btw) nor I oppose the idea that sci-fi & religion shouldn't exist together in stories. There are many Anime & Manga (Madoka & Lustrous, for instance) where the sci-fi & religion elements go hand-in-hand to explain the world & progress the characters but it works because it isn't bland or half assed, unlike here where it deviates very much & leaves a lot of questions. 2. Unimpressive Characters: The characters have personalities largely coming from the design & traits, but for such a grand concept, characters being just passable is kind of a shame. The story uses its tricks though, there is a Your Name-ish romance, a sleeping rebel beside the Hitler-inspired-but-bland villain and some unexplained flashback (which is the only point that really worked), but are very tied to cliches & are very predictable. Not saying all these are bad, some beautiful shot compositions and grand orchestral background music make it look beautiful but it's all just a trick, a very noticeable & poor trick. Now one last thing, I would like to mention is the ending. While a bit predictable, what really sold the scene is once again, the world; (That Moon is a lovely surprise) and also the beautiful ending song. At first, I thought it was just some non-Japanese foreign song but I was a bit surprised when I found out that the song was written in, "Esperanto", a language invented to bridge different people from different places and marvelled how well it worked with the theme of the movie. You probably won't like this movie if you only come in for the characters but its unique setting among Anime, sparkled with some really beautiful moments, is worth enough to give a try.

Patema Inverted is a story about a girl who wants to explore what's beneath their underground home. When she went there, she found a whole place inverted and a boy who is also inverted. They went to know each other and tend to escape from the government's resistance. I just found this anime on google and I'd say they recommend some good sheet of paper. I will watch some anime from google searches from now on because its also interesting coming from the anime title. I thought i will enjoy as much as I expected because the story is full of bad twist like how the world works and hidden after hidden places. The world is like the boy who looks up to the night's sky to see bright stars is all untrue because they really look to the main ground of the world where lifeless world reign. This world is where the morning sun is just their neighbor that the temperature is like a boiling water. Its just so hot lol. So people like Patema looks up to the place where the boy lives if she look from the lifeless world. I would not go into details. Let's just say the world is like a layered cake. The middle layer is Patema's birthplace and the 2nd to the bottom layer is the boy's birthplace. The bad twist here is they just discover places not knowingly they would see places like that. They saw so much places lol. Their goal is not to explore but just to escape from the resistance just like I said so the world helps them by giving them place to run by discovering hidden world. Its just surprising lol. So my opinion in this story is a fine one because I don't hate it and I quite enjoyed it but the twist after twist is just too predictable if you already seen to much twist. If i talk about the animation. Its good and there is not a single bad frame from what i've seen so the studio who animated this did a really good job. In character design, its generic just like from other anime films. The art is also good. I love the use lighting and I love the setting design of the inverted places like the clouds between the bottom ground of the world and the 2nd bottom layer. I can make it my own pc wallpaper because I love the tornado-like designs on the clouds too. The sound is quite good and I like the ED of this anime because its a peaceful adventure song. Overall, its fine. I don't hate any one of the aspects except the twist after twist and its quite an experience to see something like that. I will not give this a rewatch but If i ever want to, i will give this a rewatch. But for now i will not because I might low rate this one after rewatching this again. I really hope google will give me another masterpiece to roast lol.
