Because Lupin III rated poorly on its debut, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata were appointed as directors after the original director refused to make changes to improve the ratings. This led to significant differences in tone and style. In Japan, VAP released Lupin III as a five-disc DVD box set on July 4, 2001, a four-disc Blu-ray box set on December 21, 2008, and four individual Blu-ray volumes on January 21, 2009. In 2015, Kodansha issued a DVD collection for Lupin III and its sequel, distributed as a bi-monthly magazine containing one four-episode disc. The first six issues covered Lupin III, from January 27, 2015, to April 7, 2015. The collection's first six discs were rereleased on April 19, 2018. In the United States, Discotek Media released the series on DVD as Lupin III: The Complete First Series on June 26, 2012. With its 50th anniversary, Lupin III received a new English dub, released on Blu-ray as Lupin III Part 1 by Discotek Media on May 31, 2022.
