The Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura
Upset_Nimbus
The ability to read minds sounds cool on paper but as demonstrated by Kotoura-san can drastically affect one's life. This anime follows the footsteps and daily activities of the ESP club a group of growing rag-tag friends trying to prove to the world that psychic abilities are real. The most noteworthy moments, in my opinion, are the first and last few episodes as it starts out dangerously tragic and usually leads to people expecting a bit more. Don't underestimate the other episodes though as it is essentially an adorable slice of life riddled with a bit of comedy. In the past, she may have harmed others but Kotoura slowly grows a knack for using her powers and experiences to help and rehabilitate others! She's able to understand the plights of her friends and even reconcile with a serial assault offender that beats high school girls. It's a decent watch and the cuteness of it all definitely grew on me (fellow fans of moe out there, this one's pretty good!) but it could have definitely been better.

I am truly incapable of explaining JUST how infuriating watching this series progress was. The first episode was a masterpiece, an emotional, depressing, and heartwarming masterpiece, which was very very engaging. From there it went down, but episodes 1-4 were still compelling and fairly good, I think it could also have been it was riding off of the first episode, but then still they were decent. Cliche, but over-all heart-warming and still emotional, (as I said, only because of the first episode otherwise none of those emotions would carry.) But after that drama was over, and episode 5 came, it was gone. Slice of life animes can be good, if they are enjoyable, but Kotoura-san was... I had to force myself to watch simply. Not only was it boring, it was bland, the sound track was horrible, and the characters, while when first introduced seemed likable, just became annoying. The main male lead started off interesting, I will not spoil but ultimately a good, likable character, but after episode 4 he just became a pervert. He always was, it's just after that episode it became his only personality/character trait. The main character herself, while she developed over the series just... had no personality? And her rival, was the same as the male lead, she started interesting, with actual motives and had personality, after that though she was just the kick-ass character who was either, apologizing for something that happened EPISODES AGO, or beating people up. She too, lost any personality she had. All in all, would not recommend, or if you do want to watch this, then just see the first episode, trust me everything after that is not worth it. Also the main villain, sort of? the whole crime sub-plot part that happened near the end, I mean, it sucked, made zero sense, and was completely unnecessary.

Sorry for the mistakes. English: It has an interesting and sad story. It is quite entertaining to watch, it is enjoyable and interesting. The characters are nice, although Kotoura's grandfather was something ... scary with strange thoughts.Kotora's story was very sad, so it is nice that in the end he managed to have friends. The truth entertained me and I had fun. I liked it, if I would recommend it.

PROPER MINDSET Well, that was a cheap troll to begin a show… Kotoura-san begins as a most tragic slice of life regarding a girl which can read minds. She ends up making everybody hate her for that, because she keeps revealing secrets of people that were better off remaining hidden. She gets rejected by everybody and lives a lonely life, until she is approached by people her age that are not bothered by her power and even aim to help her train and make use of it. Nice and cute so far but eventually a troll. The fail of this show is that it tries to attract your attention with very tragic beginnings of various events, before it completely throws them away in ten minutes and replaces them with comedy and light fan service. We are supposed to sympathise with the girl and then keep watching regardless of the show not being dramatic but just another fluffy school life series. Before I move to other aspects of this anime let me point out that Kotoura-san is by far the most attractive new title of the winter season for most in the fandom exactly because it is switching from tragic to comedy in a heartbeat. If you have watched enough anime, you will realize that the winning formula for most mainstream anime is to have very tragic premises with very light presentation; and this is what it does very good. Most viewers don’t care about a show being serious about its themes but rather to be an emotional roller coaster. So yes, the sudden mood swings will make most to laugh and cry like immature 14 year old girls, and in a way that is what the series was heading for in the first place. That of course counts for the AVERAGE anime viewer, who is very easy to be impressed and treats anime as superficial entertainment. A veteran A-type watcher like myself will see the whole thing as yet another series that wastes its true potential for shallow entertainment. And let’s not kid ourselves; it is a shallow series that will be forgotten fast exactly because it is doing that. For the demanding audience, this anime is NOT really doing anything with its premise, other than trolling you into laughing right when you are crying. Works fine if you your emotions are an uncontrollable maelstrom, and doesn’t if you have self-constrain and prefer to look at the execution. Kotoura-san is undeniably a low-tier B-type show and not a high-tier A type that will be talked about in a few years from now. PRODUCTION VALUES So now that I have prepared you properly for how to perceive this show, let me point out that it is made with a low budget all across the board. The characters are all drawn very cartoony and there aren’t any fancy cinematics or songs to make the series attractive. Not that it has anything worth to be Kyoto Animation level or that good visuals mean anything in the longrun if the show still manages to inflict the watcher with emotions; a thing it manages even with the crumbs it throws at you. That is something noteworthy, especially for managing to be far more interesting to KyoAni’s Tamako Market that airs next to Kotoura-san and despite its budget it is just another mediocre moe show. SCRIPT & CAST Let’s move to the premise, which is becoming stupid very fast since the drama is always overblown and even unrealistic. And I will prove that by presenting both ends of the spectrum it tries to cover. - Let’s start with the first episode, where the girl gets in trouble for talking when she shouldn’t. I understand that probing peoples’ thoughts is wrong and could easily make you a hated person, but just why didn’t anyone try to make use of this ability all these years? It is just impossible to imagine this girl never using it to pass tests easier. Or for her parents to use her for telling them what their relatives or supervisors really thought about them. Or to become the most powerful person in school by blackmailing or controlling information. Or to rule the world. Hell, there are so many secret organizations that could make good use of her, yet nobody ever tries to use that power to his advantage and just hates her. They don’t even try to send her to a school for problematic children and just tolerate her. Everybody is just pretending that everybody is fine, like it would kill them to try making use of the talents set in front of them. No sir, she doesn’t have amazing superpowers that can help us take over the universe; she is just a compulsive liar and a troublemaker. We are all dull and normal people, and even those who aren’t must pretend to be. Sorry if I call this A LOAD OF CRAP! The setting is not the middle ages; it is modern Japan where they make a spectacle out of every minor and useless thing there is. I am of course overthinking this but it is out of context considering the time and place. And it is of course done for the sake of building up overblown tragedy. And sure, all tragedies are in effect overblown events caused by human stupidity. But MAN, this is so completely one-sided it just can’t pass my suspension of disbelief. And let’s face it, the only thing this girl ever needed to learn is good manners. If she can’t keep her mouth shut and keeps revealing all of peoples’ secrets left and right, she was worth the hatred she received. You don’t need to be a mind reader in order to be that snitch nobody likes in class. I used to be the class’ snitch too in elementary school; I used to rat out everybody’s mischievous acts to the teachers. I wanted to keep those fools under control before growing up to be assholes. Well, not only it didn’t work but everybody disliked me; so I stopped trying to fix what was broken beyond repair. By the time I was in junior high, I was no longer a snitch, people disliked me less (but still did) and those assholes turned out to be as I expected and are now either bums, hiding from the police, OR DEAD! MWAHAHAHA WHO IS THE SMARTASS NOW YOU ASSHOLES?! … Oh wait, I went off topic here. Anyways, what I wanted to say is the following. If that girl didn’t realize that the truth is NOT solving problems if not used properly, even after all the times she got burned because of it, then she is a complete retard. And excuse me for being unable to feel anything for a retarded snitch. - The problem exists even when she DOES manage to keep her mouth shut, but for inappropriate issues. In the second episode, she doesn’t talk when she should. You see, she meets people who are part of a paranormal school club (since apparently there is a school club for about everything) and the people there want to help her promote her skills. Upon trying to do so, some bitches constantly harass her for being special and getting all the attention, and she reacts by NOT TELLING ANYONE ABOUT IT! What the hell man, ten minutes ago she couldn’t keep her mouth shut and now lets these jealous nobodies to tell her off? This is again proof of how the drama in this show is stupid as hell. It helps you of course to feel like a hormone-crazy teenager but it all comes down to the heroine talking when she shouldn’t and not talking when she should. This girl is a masochist! Third episode, she doesn’t reveal how much she is in love, as if it’s going to kill her, while not talking is exactly what makes her suffer in the first place. SHE DESERVES THE TREATMENT SHE GETS! Something similar happens with the boy that wants to be her friend. He doesn’t mind her dreaded power because he is also a retard! Really, she asked him why he is not afraid, and even by reading his mind, he has no idea why! A retard! Another issue which makes things even more stupid is the whole mind-reading fuss. You are never let to understand how exactly it works. And I don’t mean some technobabbling nonsense; I mean HOW it works. At some cases the heroine reads minds unconsciously, at some others only when she focuses. At some point she can read only people next to her, at some others even when they are away from her. And if she can read minds, why is she constantly tricked by others? Why does she even a…

So I finished Kotoura-san recently so these thoughts are more fresh. Was good, I'd say, could be better. I still don't really feel like Haruka and Manabe are a great couple (like didn't feel they had chemistry), but I think it was nice he helped her get outta her gray/bleak mindset and I think his role for that was right. But I think it'd have been better as just good friends  I think there could have been some better aspects like I think if the show had developed more of the characters earlier/less rushed for her tragic past then it'd have hit harder. But it wasn't terribly done. Wish there was also some better development between mother and daughter. Again, not bad, just felt it could have been better. Show's good, but think it had more potential with a bit more details/time for things to actually develop/make things have more impact.

***This is a spoiler free review*** Well it’s finally over. I hate to say it but I had such high hopes for this show after seeing the opening episode but while Kotoura-san is energetic, beautiful to look at, and full of interesting characters, it falls far short of what I feel it was striving for. Story: 5/10 This anime takes many steps forward in trying to make this drama/slice of life interesting but unfortunately falls down the stairs one too many times. The show opens up in such an amazing fashion; Haruka is a very young girl who was born with the ability to read peoples thoughts. Unknowingly she spreads out everyone’s feelings and soon finds herself all alone at a very vulnerable stage. She also in the process ruins her parents’ marriage by babbling out their personal plans with some not so ok people. She ends up at rock bottom with no one to turn to except her grandfather. Flash-forward a couple years to high school and she is still very shy and scared of reading people’s thoughts. Just when she is about to give up all hope, she is introduced to Yoshihisa who takes a liking to Haruka despite her ability to see and hear every one of his thoughts. So this premise is freaking awesome right!? The first three episodes had me completely hooked because the premise was interesting and it felt like it was going to be a semi-serious high school drama. Well though luck kids because this show runs down stale lane after about the fifth episode. What the show turns into is your typical “This is what our club (the ESP society) did today” which don’t get me wrong isn’t a bad thing for some shows. Why it doesn’t work in Kotoura-san is because there was this big whole setup to make me think this show could be more than a romantic comedy. Speaking of comedy, the slapstick style humor and running gags in this show were funny the first time they were introduced but when the main gag of a show is the main character thinking of really pervy stuff and getting slapped for it…like every episode, it gets a little boring. With crap airing right now like Da Capo III and Little Busters, I was really hoping this was going to be that somewhat awesome drama that Maoyuu Maou Yuusha also could have been (I found out that show was just all about boobs). After revising all the airing anime this season, I have to unfortunately agree with the rest of the internet in saying that there was just way too much moe stuff this season. Animation: 7.9/10 Grr this is a tough thing to talk about because the animation in this show is both really basic looking but also fantastic…all at the same time. There really isn’t a lot of work done on the character models and in typical anime fashion when a comedic scene pops up, the facial expressions on the characters turn extremely basic looking for an added effect. Why I also fit in fantastic as an adjective is because the lighting, quality of the backdrops, and how the eyes were animated was just so…awesome. “What this guy is giving a good score based on eye animation?” Yes, yes I am because like I said in my Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo review the show has a “normal” feeling towards it but the little elements make it shine. The animation while a little too cartoony for my tastes was still unique and very pretty to look at. It would have scored even higher but I didn’t find some of the character models very appealing. Sound: 6.5/10 The sound design was in my opinion pretty average in this anime. I did enjoy the opening theme quite a lot as it was both catchy and the instrumentation was to my liking. The voice actors also did a pretty good job but I got so fu#$ing annoyed with Haruka saying in her high pitched voice “Ewww Manabe!” over…and over…and over again. Also the music used during the show was very generic and just not very appealing. Characters: 6/10 The problem with the characters in Kotoura-san is that the ones that are interesting and unique don’t give you a reason to like them and the main characters (Haruka and Yoshihisa) annoy the fu#$ out of you. So see the problem here? Yuriko and Daichi are both interesting but Yuriko’s hidden agenda and true feelings just make her feel no remorse on my end and Hiyori is just an annoying tomboy third wheel. I do have to say that all the characters had good chemistry and created some funny and interesting moments throughout the season but as individuals not one of them stood out to me in an overly positive way. Overall: 6.4/10 Yeah a 6.4 sounds just about right for this show. The only noteworthy things I can praise this anime for was the amazing opening episode, catchy opening theme, and the unique art style. Believe me I REALLY wanted to like this show but it really did fail on me. God I really hope there is some new unique anime coming out soon because while I like a romantic comedy just as much as the next person, I don’t want like five of them like this season. Go watch this though if you get bored because…well it’s better than watching School Days right? Enjoyment: 5/10 Thanks for reading my review! If you liked my writing style, would like to see some other reviews, or just want to talk, please stop by my page! Sincerely, Awesome Drummer

This hidden gem of an anime had me hooked from the very first episode, and I'm still reeling from the experience. The story follows Haruka Kotoura, a high school girl with the ability to read minds, and her journey to find acceptance and friendship. What I loved most about Kotoura San is its perfect blend of humor, drama, and supernatural elements. The characters are well-developed, relatable, and lovable, making it easy to become invested in their lives. Haruka's innocence and kindness, combined with her snarky humor, make her an endearing protagonist. The supporting cast, including the hilarious and lovable Hiyori and Yuriko, add depth and complexity to the story. The anime tackles themes of bullying, social isolation, and the struggles of adolescence with sensitivity and nuance. It's remarkable how the show balances lighthearted moments with more serious, emotional scenes, making for a captivating viewing experience. As I finished the final episode, I couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment that it was over. The ending was satisfying, but I'm left craving more! I desperately hope for a season 2, as there are still so many stories to explore and characters to develop further. If you're looking for an anime that will make you laugh, cry, and feel all the feels, Kotoura San is a must-watch. With its unique premise, engaging characters, and heartfelt storytelling, it's a true gem that deserves more attention. Fingers crossed for a sequel!

Story: 9 Art: 7 Sound: 7 Character: 9 Enjoyment: 7 Overall: 8 Kotoura-san was an anime I didn't expect to like, but here we are, giving it a 9/10. The story was actually really good for a simple slice-of-life with a little bit of supernatural. The supernatural element was actually used quite a bit in different situations, and it didn't get repetitive. All loose ends got tied up at the end, leaving a pretty much watertight story. And the characters were deep enough to not bore anyone. The art was good, so was the sound. I can't say much because I don't understand these criteria. The characters were, as I said above, deep enough not to bore anyone, as well as provide a bunch of comic relief. I personally didn't enjoy this too much because of my personal tastes, but it was a good story nonetheless. If you are seriously running out of stories to watch, give this a try, it's not bad and there are worse things out there. (I am not writing a very good review here, am I? I guess I just don't have that much to say...)

Kotoura-san is a funny melodramatic show. While not perfect, it often lands its comedic and dramatic moments very well while keeping its story believable despite having a mind reader as a protagonist. There are moments when the story feels unrealistically angsty, particularly its portrayal to bullying but it's not too glaring in my opinion. The main cast is likeable and hilarious. They have good chemistry with one another, and they have some depth while representing certain archetypes. That being said, there are moments when they are very annoying. That irritation is often during the times when the scenarios became unnecessarily melodramatic. Fortunately, that rarely happens and the show is enjoyable overall. The visuals are cute and the sound is alright. The animation is fine as well. The OP is cute. I recommend the series if you haven't seen it yet.

Kotoura-san (2013) Well, the show is its entirety is pretty good but at the same time, it is rushed towards the end and also contains some pretty odd ways of filling some pretty dark voids. Although the story is quite nice as it should be obvious from the start it is pretty dark in its nature. It shows a pretty abusive side that stems back to the whole argument of humans do not like change and often fight it. This leads to being a pretty brutal lifestyle for our heroine. Although the story is bright and vibrant as it goes through it does leave a few questions about the morality of those evil and those who have abused being so quickly forgiven. The art is of a good standard throughout. It has aged well mostly. Some areas are a bit off, during some sequences of people walking away they suddenly go stick figure on the lower half of their body or look a bit crooked. At least there isn't anyone with crazy ridiculous hair or entirely too big chests. The OP and ED are both fun and memorable. The voice acting is well done. The script itself seems to be lacking a bit of emotion, especially in serious circumstances. The entire cast are pretty normal. Even the heroine who is special is also pretty normal. That is odd considering she has had a hugely traumatic lifestyle for the majority of her life. The ESP club generally makes up a nice set of characters and show some real progression which is great. I would say they could be a bit bland in not being too different but then it is more realistic that way. The cast is quite small and many supporting characters like the other students really do not interfere which again is a nice change. I would say the show is good. It has its points where it doesn't make sense with, especially criminals just stopping through feelings and abusive people being forgiven for years of torment in a short time span. Other than that it is a nice story that is funny and contains generic tropes that are handled pretty well. I would recommend this to be watched by people who want a deeper slice of life story that gives something in return. It does flow nicely and could be watched one after the other without getting bored.

An anime that didn't promise much but ended up delivering far more than I expected. The first episode hits like a punch to the gut right from the start. The show wastes no time introducing the protagonist's plight and showing how her abilities negatively impact her life. It’s a heavy opening, yet masterfully executed, managing to make you care about the character immediately. Building that level of empathy in such a short time is quite a feat, and Kotoura-san pulls it off naturally. Beyond the initial dramatic impact, the series conveys important messages about friendship, solidarity, acceptance, and companionship. It manages all this in just one episode, laying the groundwork for a story that, despite its simplicity, has a lot of heart. Honestly, what really won me over about Kotoura-san is how it develops its characters and their relationships. The animation is simple, the plot follows the standard high school anime formula, and at first glance, nothing seems particularly extraordinary. However, the show’s greatest strength lies in the interactions between the characters. We gradually watch the protagonist find people who see past her abilities, making her journey far more interesting and moving. The balance between drama and comedy also deserves mention. The series successfully alternates between genuinely sad moments and fun, lighthearted situations without losing its identity. While some jokes might seem over-the-top, they add levity to the narrative and make the emotional moments stand out even more by contrast. It’s a blend that works better than I imagined, resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Another highlight is the charisma of the cast. The character interactions breathe life into the story and make you want to keep following their lives. More than just presenting a sequence of events, Kotoura-san manages to craft moments that foster affection for the characters, giving weight to their small victories. Ultimately, it isn't necessarily the plot's originality that sustains the anime, but rather the way it handles human emotions and relationships. At times, the experience reminded me of Koe no Katachi, not so much because of the narrative approach or depth, but because of how themes like acceptance, loneliness, and the importance of finding people who truly care about us can resonate with the viewer. While the two works differ significantly in execution and intent, they share the ability to evoke empathy through human struggles. Overall, Kotoura-san is a very pleasant surprise. It isn't a groundbreaking or technically dazzling series, but it possesses charm, engaging characters, and an emotional resonance that makes up for its limitations. It is the kind of anime that starts off seeming simple but ultimately wins you over with its sincerity and the genuine warmth it conveys. I highly recommend it, especially to those who enjoy stories that blend comedy, drama, and heartwarming moments. Rating: 7/10. A animação é simples, a trama segue aquela estrutura bastante comum de animes colegiais e, à primeira vista, nada parece especialmente extraordinário. Outro ponto positivo é o carisma do elenco. Nota: 7/10.

- Everyone either hates the main character or wants to use her for personal gain. - Delicate subjects are handled extremely poorly and the cutesy art style detracts from the serious subject matter. - Sexual harassment is played off as comic relief. The love interest and her grandfather both subject her to this. - The mother is not redeemable at any point in the show, her ending is infuriating. - The stories change of direction halfway through was jarring. This show is not as cute as it thinks it is. If you want a good comedy with an ESP aspect, I'd suggest Amagi Brilliant Park or Spy x Family instead.

The Troubled life of Miss Kotoura is everything I wanted out of the story even if I or the characters didn't deserve it. This is a fine piece of hope core that everything will and can get better. Certain redemption, while they made me feel happy felt kind of forced. I got hooked hard by this anime from the very beginning and couldn't stop watching. Also the opening scene is brilliant in just ten minutes we get a complete understanding of the main character, what their life has been, and how that all right now could change. The comedy is also great, I'm glad they used her powers in such a creative way for comedy. Their were some moments in this which made me cry (not hard to do but still.) The message of Kotoura can be somewhat dangerous if applied universally, but as a piece of entertainment I loved it.

Title: A Bittersweet Journey: The Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura Rating: 6/10 "The Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura" is an anime series that delves into the complex and emotional journey of a young girl named Haruka Kotoura, who possesses the ability to read minds. With the initial promise of exploring a unique premise, the show manages to captivate viewers with its poignant portrayal of the protagonist's struggles, but falls short in certain aspects, resulting in a mixed viewing experience. One of the show's greatest strengths lies in its ability to evoke powerful emotions. Miss Kotoura's troubled past, filled with loneliness, heartbreak, and rejection, tugs at the heartstrings and effectively engages the audience. Haruka's character development throughout the series is notable, as she gradually opens up and forms genuine connections with the people around her, leading to moments of heartwarming friendship and love. The show excels in portraying the vulnerability and resilience of its characters, creating genuine empathy among viewers. However, despite these strengths, "The Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura" struggles to maintain a consistent tone throughout its runtime. The anime blends genres, attempting to balance comedy, drama, and romance, but often feels disjointed. At times, the abrupt shifts between lighthearted humor and heavy drama can be jarring, making it difficult to fully immerse oneself in the story. Additionally, certain comedic elements can feel forced or repetitive, dampening the impact of the emotional moments. Another aspect that hampers the show's potential is the underdevelopment of side characters. While the main cast receives sufficient attention and growth, the supporting characters lack depth and are largely relegated to serving specific plot points. This limits the overall impact and creates missed opportunities for exploring more intricate relationships and dynamics within the story. Visually, the animation quality is average, with no standout moments in terms of art style or animation techniques. However, the soundtrack does a commendable job in setting the mood and enhancing the emotional scenes, effectively supplementing the storytelling. In conclusion, "The Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura" is a series that carries a heartfelt premise and successfully captures the essence of the protagonist's struggles. It boasts strong emotional moments and character growth, but is hindered by inconsistent tonal shifts and underdeveloped side characters. With a more focused execution and improved balance between its different elements, the show had the potential to reach greater heights. Despite its flaws, it still manages to leave a lasting impact, making it worth a watch for those seeking a poignant tale of personal growth and resilience.

Kotoura-san is a masterpiece (hence my overall 10 rating for this one) in writing. Specifically, writing good characters that change and grow as the story progresses. A big issue with high school rom-com stories, aside from the usual male protag-kun and his harem of female tropes, is how writers treat teenagers like they're just blank characters with no feelings or motivations. Not only for the kids in the high school, but from the MC's parents to her teachers, everyone has some depth to why they act the way they do. What struck me the most was how this show handled story elements like trauma, loss, and forgiveness. I just LOVE stories like this, that treat the characters like real people, with real experiences and feelings. If I had to summarize this anime in one theme, it'd be "second chances", because basically, every character in the show gets an opportunity to look at their future as a way to make up for their past and be better people.

I love the begining with a tragic story and the scrolling of life of Kotoura and the abrupt moment with aliens showing the different personalities between kotoura and Manabe. The eichii it's not embarassing and i am not used to say that but with the story it's not totally incoherent. The caracters secondary are also interesting and funny because despite the begining sadness the humor it's very present. But there is a thing that bothered me it was the grand-father. The echii between two tennagers of 16 years it's not unpalatable but with a grand-father her granddaughter it's illegal. But the anime it's good and i still spent a good moment at looking.
