New Game is one of series which myself couldn't contain if it's gonna be good or no. I already watch so much moe before, so after watch this anime, i glad not making some mistake to pick this anime. This gonna be so short. New Game is the story of someone that work in game's industry. Surprisingly, it's a girl and she's cute like high school girl. With that design character and color, i'm surprise this anime give some explanation to how to make a game from the view of art creator. I'm expected moe with not much development story and getting one with much development story like this anime. From the story, it's good story and from the art, it's nice and good art too. I like all the character. They had much personality and coukd work so well as a team. It's good to see this kind of character with moe design. It's like to show many people that moe anime can make a good story too. And character seems to be their stronger point, i can't feel boring watch these cute girls enjoying themself. It's not in the level of Shirobako, but it's enjoyable and have a good story telling. I can't wait for season 2.

New Game! has a lot of things working for it. One, it doesn’t have a high school setting. That gets boring when it has no bearing on the actual plot and story being told. Two, all the characters are adults; so they won’t make decisions that make adults facepalm. Three, despite the all female cast the characters aren’t needlessly sexualized. Breasts obey the laws of physics, cameras aren’t placed on the floor pointing upwards, etc. Four it doesn’t try to be anything more than it offers. Otaku these days expect every anime to be the greatest since the last series that was the greatest and live in a constant state of disappointment. New Game! is a sign that by keeping it simple they can achieve great things. Great may be going a little far, but I was thoroughly entertained. It was cute and funny without being offensive and perverted. The art was great and the characters were well rounded and diverse. The number one complaint about this show is it’s moe. It’s cute women doing cute things and little more. But it doesn’t try to be. So if you abhor all things moe you’ll probably want to skip this one. But I’d say give it a chance, because it isn’t a harem show or a high school drama about unrequited love. It’s a workplace sitcom, and who doesn’t love those? The only other complaint is it offers no real insight into the videogame industry or making process. I only mention this because it was a gripe in the OtakuUSA review of the series. I also mention it as an example of how fans expect too much out of each and every series to the point of not being able to enjoy anything. In conclusion I say watch it, it’s a good, wholesome workplace comedy that doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not.

I fully enjoyed this. Not only was the art and character design cute, but the subject matter was cool and interesting. I enjoyed seeing the game development progress and the end was a satisfying close to the season. As a gamer and an office worker, it made me want to work harder too. Aoba was a lovely lead that was earnest and one of the best characters in the show. Some of the work humor moments were relatable, such as with labelling things in the fridge and the different relationships you make with your coworkers. Definitely part of the moe girls doing things SOL genre, but good nonetheless. Just an overall fun ride and I enjoyed every minute.

Cute girls doing things strikes again! ...from 2016. It is 2021 and I just watched New Game! Here we have cute girls being productive members of society. Disclaimer: All characters depicted are 18 years of age or older. No real reason for the warning except Aoba (The main girl) looks like she is 12. None of these characters look their age, but that is anime for you. Anywho! Let's see what this anime is about: A 12 episode comedic look into the world of designing a game from the art dept. side of things. Ok. Cool. This is a funny anime about a team of girls working on a project for a game company called Square Soft- I mean, Square Soft- I mean Eagle Jump! They are working on Final- Fairy Story 3. Ok I will stop with the mediocre joke. I am sure there are at least 20 reviews making the same joke. Like this one! Go me! It focuses more on the characters day to day and how they adjust with their work and other mild shenanigans. It does not focus on the technical aspects of it, so if you are worried it will try to flex it's knowledge in LOOOOONG drawn out explanations then, Good news! It won't. It will cover what is needed for the audience to understand what the characters feel. That's it. It is a solid anime and slice of life heavy and funny. What more could you want? Action? Romance? Sorry. We don't do that here. As someone who loves me some romance, this series didn't need it and I loved it regardless. So it isn't something deep or mentally taxing to watch either. Just pop it on and enjoy! Story: 7 - It's fine. It follows the group to their deadline of game release. Ha! Release. Art: 10 - Fantastic art and they promo movie they showed for their game kind of made me want to play Fairy Story 3. I just love JRPGs and Anime openings in them can make it better for me, so I was sold on a game that doesn't exist! SAD! Sound: 10 - Good music and good sound effects! Character: 7 - None stand out too much except one character who perfectly captures a gamer's need to see up character model's... If you know what I mean. Enjoyment: I did enjoy this a great deal. It wasn't mind blowing, but I had several great laughs and enjoyed the story presented. Overall: 7 - A Great Slice of Life look into Game development without all the extra text book explanations.

I gave this show an 8, but I was very close to giving it a 9. I thought this would just be another one of your everyday moe blobs, but I was surprised to find there is actually some depth to it. The first season was just a really funny, interesting story about game designers, but then the second season actually almost moved me to tears. It's not sad, so don't worry about that, but it's just really nice. I grew to love these characters so much over the course of only 2 seasons. I HIGHLY recommend this anime if you like moe or slice of life, this is definitely better than average. It should have a higher score than it does as well. And I'm not a game designer, so I don't know much about it, but the workflow seemed realistic to me, and they didn't just skip past issues like overworking. Overall, this is just a really nice, funny, pleasant, and surprisingly moving show.

New Game! is a lighthearted series that follows Suzukaze Aoba, an aspiring character designer as she gets the chance to work on her favorite video game franchise, Fairies Story, a medieval Europe themed (nobody gets tired of those, ever) action adventure RPG. New Game! is one of those shows where everything the characters ever do appears to be cozy, fun, very soothing indeed. Doing overtime for 4 days in a row? Looks fun and cozy. Sleeping under your work desk because you did overtime until 3 AM and have to continue to work from 6 AM on next day to meet deadline? Looks fun and cozy. You have your characters here like you usually would have them with this flavor; Aoba is reliable, always happy, sensitive and adorable. Hifumi is reserved, shy and adorable. Yun is friendly, hard working and adorable, Hajime is tomboyish, energetic and adorable... you know. Those types of characters. You know what you're getting yourself into as soon as OP begins. You don't have to like video games to enjoy this, but you do need to enjoy cute girls doing cute things because it's one of those and it's pretty good at what it sets out to do. Now, there is a plot here, but much of it goes through the ropes of showcasing the ever evolving relationship between these characters. If you're tired of cute girls doing cute things at school but still want to see cute girls doing cute things somewhere else, say, in an office, then this is definitely for you. There's even a second season called New Game!! (notice the extra ! there) because apparently a lot of people can't get enough this crew.

About cute girls doing cute things Countless animes use this well, of course for the purpose being this (speak the obvious in different ways) New game does not bring anything new or interesting to make it above average So at all points (History, art, characters, sound, pleasure and in general) He deserves a satisfactory 5 The story is enough for you to accept what’s happening in the environment where the characters are placed but nothing big Animation or character art is pretty standard. The somewhat strong lighting is satisfactorily supported by the characters' traits and the environment that is more concentrated in closed places like the office where they work Simple characters that do cute things again (nothing new) The sound is also quite normal in both opening and closing in addition to the soundtrack About the pleasure of seeing this anime putting all these points together, I couldn't stay anything but neutral and having 2 or 3 laughs in the comedy (one that I remember are the scenes with the porcupine aka the best character there) In the end this tag is quite relative in terms of notes I may have read some reviews that rate 9 for quotes from scenes that they found funny or the characters amusing But that in the end are just personal statements of why it pleased you so much, nothing that clearly goes for everyone As it happens here too If you like moe and haven't gotten tired of it yet, go ahead with new game

Note: This is a broad review with minimal spoilers that encompasses both seasons of the show. Overall, it's a cute show that you might find enjoyment out of. And if you are bigger into moeness than I am, you might end of loving it. Episode: 24 (About 20 minutes each episode) Plot: B-: Aoba Suzukaze is a high school graduate that opts out of going to a prestigious art school and instead finds work with a gaming company called Eagle Jump where she gets right to work as a character designer. She is both excited and nervous to find out that her idol, famed lead character designer of her favorite video game series: Faries Story, Kō Yagami is her immediate supervisor. Throughout the course of the show, we get to see some of the processes involved in making video games and get a glimpse into the lives of character designers as they make one new game in each of the two seasons of the show. Visuals: B+ *I often talk about the character designs and much like with K-ON! (since it's the same studio that made that as well) the designs are adorable. Aoba Suzukaze, Yun Iijima, and Hifumi Takimoto in particular were adorable! The color scheme for the show was very bright and inviting. And even though I would have no interest in playing either of the games that the show introduced, the character designs indeed were very cute and it was cool how they showed off how they looked in 2D versus in 3D. Voice Acting: B *As usual, I went with the dub and for the most part, this is a good one. Most of the characters have cutesy voices that are not unbearably annoying to listen to... with the exception of Alba's best friend Nene Sakura who has a ridiculously high-pitched voice that can make anyone's ear's bleed and Hajime Shinoda who had a loud and obnoxious voice which reminded me of Chuckie from Rugrats lol! Aoba and Yagomi I will give props to because even though I wish I got more attached to the characters of the show, during the sentimental moments towards the ending of the show, I was touched mainly because of the great performances by their two voice actresses. [ Film Score/Soundtrack: B *In the context of the show, Hajime Hyakkoku (composer for K-ON!'s film score too) had a memorable score that kept a playful tone and atmosphere which helped to make the show fun to watch. But as usual, the few sentimental pieces are where it shines the most. Aside from a few highlights though, I probably won't be listening to it on it's own like I do with K-ON!'s fantastic OST though. ***My favorite track: Characters: B *The show focuses too much on making the characters quirky and cute instead of showcasing their talents and showing us why they were hired to work at Eagle Jump in the first place. With that being said, Aoba, and Yagami come across as really likable and their relationship elevates this character rating significantly for me. Takimoto started off as your typical super shy and antsy anime girl who can't speak to anyone without freaking out and it was really irritating, but I will say that her development was nice to see as the series went on. And for how annoying as Sakura's voice was, her relationship with programmer Umiko Ahagon was actually really cute and it was pretty inspirational to see her start out as a nobody and to slowly work her way into the company through sheer-determination, passion, and lots of trial and error. (Although there should probably been a longer period of trial and error that was shown in the show) I just don't get why they felt the need to add Momiji Mochizuki and Tsubame Narumi in the last few episodes of the show just to add tension and rivalry. Both of them were really unlikable and distracted from what made the show interesting in the first place: girls working on a game. Cringeworthy Anime Moments: Fanservice. Why did we need a scene where the girls were dressed up in maid cafe outfits? Why did the show need a game director, Shizuku Hazuki, who flirts with every employee she has and makes them all feel uncomfortable? Why do we need slow-mo boob graphics and ass-shots of Hajime periodically throughout the show? Why did we need a scene of the two useless characters Momiji and Narumi where Narumi is sitting shirtless in front of a fan with her massive breasts barely getting covered by a towel? Why did we have to a romance forced on us between Yagami and Rin Tōyama? These elements of the show detracted from the exciting premise of girls working in the gaming industry and it's a real shame. Opening 1: "Sakura Skip" is a total bop and has super cute visuals to go along with it. An easy add to my My Anime Music Playlist. Opening 2 "It's hard to decide which OP I prefer. The buildup to the "clap" that kicks this song into third gear is super cute and then it becomes so much fun! Ending 1 "Now Loading" is cute, catchy, and has a strong enough build-up to the chorus to make the song feel more emotional and helps make me feel like I care about the show. This song is fantastic! Ending 2 " JUMPin' JUMP UP!!!!" is a bit too extra moe for my tastes. I can see why others like it, but it's definitely not my favorite. Final Verdict: 5/10 This is a show that should have been so much better than it was. The premise was so interesting and they took it in directions that it had no business going. I understand that moe anime is pretty much described as "cute anime girls doing cute things" but they took that trope too far in several episodes which took away from the otherwise fascinating story and unique work environment that the girls had. I still enjoyed the show for what it was though. I just wish that they shifted their focus on what made the show unique and touched on more aspects of the video game design process and even the parts after the work was finished. Still, the show did touch on some other interesting human problems such as being a young person being put in charge of people more experienced and older than you for the first time and the struggles that such a scenario provides. Or it discusses how volatile the gaming industry is for employees and how hard it is for companies to keep the same personnel for the long-term and they instead typically hire people for projects and then release them with the exception of their core personnel. If it touched more on those types of human topics and more on the gaming process, this could have been a great show. But instead, it was a missed opportunity. I enjoyed it though.

This is really a review for both seasons as my main issue spans both seasons also. I get the main characters are just out of high school w/ one being in college but how many people would actually last long at their jobs if they acted as childish as the characters do? I do wish they would have made the characters actually look like younger adults instead of 13-14 year olds with matching attitudes and annoyingly high voices. Had I been in their managers position they would have probably been fired after the 1st paycheck. Besides that, the story was fine and the rest of the characters are enjoyable.

This one was disappointing, but it's possible my expectations were too high. You see, this anime has brief flashes of a much more interesting show that actually is about something: specifically the hyper-capitalist work culture and mandatory crunch in Japan, or even the games industry as a whole. We see every character at some point have to work so late into the night that the trains have stopped running, losing so much sleep they pass out at random moments, and multiple characters mention family and friends being openly worried about their health - our main character even gets in a fight during one such moment in defense of the company exploiting her. By far the best scene in the show is the opening to Episode 10 when Aoba is riding the train into work, and we see the world around her drawn in uncolored pencil sketches, the people around her depicted with no facial details, audio of conversations fading in and out - showing us just how sleep deprived she is. She manages to jolt awake when the announcer calls her stop, and she runs out of the train car just in time to see a husband, wife, and child walking by her smiling and laughing together as she pauses to look on with envy. It sinking in that the reality of working in this industry is that she's a young woman who’s giving her entire life to her company - she doesn't have time for romance, to meet people, have kids, have any kind of social life. I think it's so interesting that the show doesn't shy away from showing how miserable this toxic work culture can be, but at the same time we never actually explore the topic in any depth beyond that. It’s always brought up for a few seconds and then dismissed with a joke or a “Ganbare!”. I know the show wants to keep a light tone, but I can’t help imagining a version of it that started off with comedic slice of life hijinks and cute girls doing cute things, and actually followed through on exploring its central topic - and had the characters become more miserable and jaded as it went - reflecting the main character’s initial wonder and optimism, the same thing that drives so many to work in the games industry, eventually being beaten out of her by a system in which she is an expendable cog in a vast uncaring, unfeeling machine. I know it sounds crazy to expect any of that from a slice of life moe show, but it’s not an unstated reality that we’re ignoring here - the show DOES go there just often enough to make me want to stick around to see if it’ll actually do something with it - but unfortunately it never does, and so New Game condemns itself to being a very average slice of life show, albeit one that had a lot of untapped potential.

enjoyed it, was a nice thing to watch while overly stressed about my life. however, i could not stand her best friend character. rose my blood pressure every time she was on screen. could have done without. because of that, i preferred the first half. hoping to see less of her in season 2. honestly though, i really enjoyed every other character, so that made it well worth it despite my qualms with nenecchi. all unique and entertaining with funny quirks, and just really nice dynamics all around. not every joke hit, and some stuff just felt corny and cringey, but that was all part of the charm and experience, at least to me. it's not ibsen, but it's exactly what i needed it to be. relaxing, cute, and fun.

New Game! It delivers exactly what it promises, a cute girl with other cute girls doing... cute things? In general, this anime is like one of those cartoons you watched as a child, where you're not looking for an experience, but just want to see something silly. If you don't want to waste your time watching something complex, this anime is for you. Story 05/10: The story is that cliché thing, she's just a girl who's fulfilling her dream of working in a games company, other than that there's no big plot or anything like that. Character 07/10: The characters are very charismatic, despite having no depth, they are cute and you can see that they are very different, and that's cool; Music 08/10: The songs are perfect for the anime, in a cuter style but at the same time with a touch of technology. Art: Cute, there's not much to say other than that, it wasn't made to have insane graphics. Entertainment 05/10: It's funny, it's cute to watch, and you can see in a very parody way, the process of creating games

New Game is an amusing enough slice of life work-com that I'm admittedly a bit biased toward because I do 3D modeling ostensibly in the game industry for a living, so the accurate background details showing 3D modeling and texturing were right up my alley. There are some good game industry culture bits, like the airsoft guns in the office reminding me of many a nerf battle, but unless you're really invested in game development it's otherwise just a pretty okay slice of life gag series. The characters are fun and I enjoyed their interactions, but truthfully not a lot actually happens. Most episodes are pretty firmly set the protagonist's cubicle and visually it does get a bit repetitive to look at. The artwork and character designs are good, but visually it never really goes above and beyond and while there are some scenes in and around town, it's kind of like watching The Office if the titular office was even smaller. The gags are cute, but nothing was really gut-bustingly funny, but at the same time I think it's meant to be more of a pleasant background noise kind of show and it succeeds at that. I certaainly don't regret binging the first season over the weekend and I never felt put off of it or bored, I just wish they dug a bit more into the actual work at times.

When it comes to writing a coherent, enjoyable film or television series, many factors can shine. Whether that be thematic significance, mesmerising worldbuilding, or thought provoking dialogue, these can help push a show beyond mediocrity harder than I can abuse the rule of three writing this introduction to the rest of the review. New Game doesn’t really feature many of these notabilities mentioned prior, but such is often to be expected from a slice of life show; an episodic one at that (of course, there exist plenty of great examples of environmental storytelling that serve as counterexamples, but as it’s obvious that this was not the goal of the creators, I digress). Nonetheless, an unchanging character environment without major conflicts of note can work, but ONLY if the humour works. Imagine watching Seinfeld (or any other sitcom for that matter) without the incidental humour. Trying to watch any show centred around comedy that doesn’t “click” for you will feel like a slog; It just doesn’t work. Perhaps if you like underdelivered jokes that have the writing equivalent of a runny egg’s consistency, you’d find New Game a lot more amusing than I did. To top it all off, New Game isn’t even particularly educational in its subject matter, preferring to dedicate most of its runtime to idealistic scenes that are slightly more entertaining than watching paint dry. It’s very well animated paint, for sure, but underneath the colourful, vibrant visuals, the enthusiastic voice acting, the fun soundtrack, and the fluid animation, there’s... nothing really of note? The characters show features an all-female cast for no other reason other than to provide the viewer with eye candy, with some of the fanservice shots, while much less common than certain other offenders, being as obnoxious as ever. I can’t say I hated New Game, but between every fun interaction that could even be humorous on occasion, there existed a plethora of moe fluff scenes I couldn’t get behind personally. While far from the worst offender, I cannot be Stockholm Syndrome’d by the art direction into saying I very much enjoyed the overall experience. Whilst this review may seem harsh, understand that it’s an okay show if you need something cute and thoughtless at the end of a day.

first things first. an all-female anime? YES PLEASE. i was very happy to see an all-female cast for this that involved them all working in a game-esque environment. it was just nice to not see a creepy male co-worker or the one male character in the office surrounded by women. this anime is really cute and i think that it's pretty nice to show what work-life is really about; at least when you love what you do for work that is. i like how the characters are all different from one another despite working on the same game. - minor spoilers below - i was really excited to see that the main character's best friend made a bigger appearance in the anime as well, instead of just being this character that was called every now and then like in other anime. if someone wants a wholesome slice-of-life anime, this is definitely for you.
