No matter how many times I rewatch this anime it always has me screaming, damn. This anime is hilarious definitely recommending you this. The contrast between the MC's Music Life and normal daily life and how his Music Life interacts with his daily life is ingeniously portrayed. The only thing that could have been better is the quality, I guess that's to be expected from such a controversial anime like this that dates from 2008. This doesn't decrease the enjoyment I got from watching and it might have made it even better. Quick note~Don't take it all too seriously RAPE! RAPE! RAPE! RAPE! -KRAUSER OUT

This is the BEST anime series I have ever seen not only in anime category. Its a non stop comedy. I just couldn't stop laughing. The concept and the execution is just perfect. The story is simple, a young boy begins his life and goes to college or something and he dreams to be a pop star. He likes pop sweet song etc. BUT until he gets famous he becomes the lead singer of a death metal band. I said enough about the plot. Why I liked it? They didn't try to milk the series. Its a funny story with brilliant characters. The story has 12 episodes and every episode has something new to offer, not 500++ episodes of wasting your time with garbage talk and cheap scenes just to milk a series. This is why I like it, you just enjoy every second of the episode. The series stops where its really funny, you want more but thankfully it stops before it becomes boring. Its a perfectly balanced series. I hope more anime series where like this..

REVIEW WITH NO SPOILERS An unpretentious anime with black humor about music, especially metal. The protagonist is divided between a sensitive and cult boy and an insane and violent metal guy. If you do not like swearing, or words like rape, murder ... anyway, if you're a politically correct guy in the humor you will not like Detroit Metal City. Some situations are a bit unnecessary, but in general it's quite funny. The animation is pretty bad, but it helps in the non sense plot of the anime. The ending is one of the best I've ever seen, because besides the music being cute contrasts with the opening.

The avg comedy anime forcez u to sit through a 25 minute set, whc in & of itself is not the greatest per se. Detrout Metal City on the otherwise allows u to experience a comedy anime wit all tda fat trimmed out. - flows better per se in this manner where in there is no dead air. - cycles through duds and isnt vtuber humor like majority of anime. - setting is unique and explores ideas not put to pen before in anime sphere. - premise is effective and the performance of all the characters sells it. - voice acting shows reality and it is funny how put together & how discernable all characters are - Side characters really tie this together that you can lean on this anime to provide laughs in a sense. - it is highly bingeable due to the shortened length of every episode. It sincerely made me laugh so they say that if a comedy anime makes this happen to u it can be seen as one fo the best anime speaking relatively. So overall in the regard, this is sincerely the most effective comedy anime I have watched with high frequency of laugh and it is highly suggested. So please consider it as something you will eventually watch ty.

This anime honestly has everything you want Short episodes but a plot that is continous partically focused on the MC's music career as well as his personal relationship with his crush The humor is also just delivered in such a different format than most animes. Unlike most animes that might have sex jokes, the anime has a mature air to it that just makes the humor feel real but still can get you laughing on the floor. The fact that there's an actual line in the first episode "Fuck off! This kinda shit isn't gonna make me cum" has me rolling in laughter. The animation isn't great which is the only reason it doesn't get a 9/10 but it's not an action anime

Not suitable for those who are sensitive to violent or sexually explicit language, or are looking for clean, linear stories. I think if the anime was released in 2020 or later, they would have thrown it down or slaughtered it with insults. 12-episode 15min anime, which is why it's over in a flash. The manager's jokes about getting wet aren't bad. Humour although it's very offensive, with frequent violent and sexual references doesn't bother or irritate, but it gets tired after a while. it's true some jokes make you snort with amusement "pff". but from saying, "I died laughing", I think they exaggerate a little in the comments.

Detroit Metal City was a neat experience. Can't really use any other description that will live up to that 8.10 MAL score. I thought that Detroit Metal City was funny at times, but having a score that high is funnier than the show itself. By the way, I might be switching back and forth between "Detroit Metal City" and "DMC" throughout this review. If I'm referring to the anime itself, I'll say "Detroit Metal City." If I'm referring to the band, I'll say "DMC." Souichi, our main character, is a sweet young man. I'm assuming he's in his early twenties based on context clues. He moves away to Tokyo to achieve his dreams of becoming a musical sensation. He will take the world by storm for his love of Swedish pop music. However, that doesn't happen at all. Instead, he goes to the wrong music producer, and his musical career takes a 180. He becomes Krauser II. Destroyer of worlds and murderer of parents. He's done all the drugs, fucked all of the holes, and chucked every CRT out of every hotel window. There's also Jagi, the bassist for DMC. And Camus, the drummer. I'm sure there is someone out there who legitimately cares for these characters. I'm not one of them. They do, however, have their fair share of funny moments. Jagi is a playboy, constantly hitting on women. And Camus is a weird, perverted freak who mumbles his words. They're only like this in their personal lives. Detroit Metal City heavily relies on crass and vulgar humor. I've noticed in more recent years that some people label Detroit Metal City's sense of humor to be offensive. Some see that as a positive thing, and some don't. Some of these people can't handle certain words being said out loud. Despite the fact that words have no real power unless you give them power. Words and language are completely made up and mean nothing unless you give them meaning. The reason why the word "Fuck" is considered to be such a bad and taboo word is because we made it that way. In reality, it has no real meaning and was made up by some douche who is probably dead. Or it probably originates from some Germanic word that I'm not aware of. I mention all of this because some people have a problem with Krauser's "Ten Vocialized Rapes in One Second." Essentially his signature. And a bunch of other bizarre rape jokes spread throughout the series. They're not that funny, but they don't bother me either. Characters also say "Fuck" a lot, and that's the punchline. Usually a joke in Detroit Metal City boils down to a character overusing the word "Fuck." That's all. Who cares. This especially applies to the final episode, and the manager of the band. She doesn't have a name, by the way. They just call her "Manager" or "President" and nothing else. Or maybe she does have a name and I already forgot it. And sorry about my unusual take on language. That went on for a while. My personal issue with the comedy is that this style of humor just seems shocking for the sake of being shocking. Which I guess you could argue that that's the entire point of Detroit Metal City. However, the show's attempts at humor are so try-hard and forced that most of the time I don't even end up laughing. Humor is subjective blah blah blah yada yada yada, we all know. You could also make the argument that Detroit Metal City's humor is so exaggerated because DMC themselves are an exaggerated version of a black metal band. I don't know. I Just found the humor lame. I can think of a few other shows that also have a similar style of humor. Like Panty and Stocking. Does nothing for me. I'm sure people love it, but I'm too jaded to actually care. Another part of the show I haven't mentioned yet is that Souichi has an old friend from his hometown. Her name is Aikawa. She is the textbook definition of pure and innocent. She isn't aware that Souichi is Krauser, so many jokes and scenarios are just Souichi protecting his alter ego. These jokes are fine, but I'm not in love with them either. This next part of the review is very frustrating for me. I had already written an entire part ranting about DMC's manager and how she was voiced by Yuu Kobayashi. APPARENTLY, SHE ISN'T. I had just made the assumption without checking, but one day I decided to make sure I was correct. It's not Yuu Kobayashi at all. It's a completely different seiyuu who has the exact same last name. Ai Kobayashi, who sounds identical to Yuu Kobayashi. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES!? I understand that names can get very repetitive in Japan, but the fact that I was convinced she was Yuu Kobayashi for weeks, an entirely different seiyuu with no relation or connection, is hysterical. Man, I'm so embarrassed and upset. Most of what I had written doesn't apply anymore. I went on this long diatribe about how people love Yuu Kobayashi and how she's hysterical. I was of the same mind about seven or eight years ago, but now I find her sense of humor to be very scatological and obnoxious. She just screams like a maniac most of the time, and people eat that shit up. However, I guess this particular case applies to Ai Kobayashi. Her performance was pretty obnoxious. Her character in this anime is bizarre. I'm positive that 50% of her dialogue is her talking about how DMC's music makes her pussy wet. Usually, I would be on board with a character like this, considering how often I talk about and mention the word "pussy" in my reviews. Regardless, I found her dialogue rather tiresome and annoying. It's never funny after the first time. Sorry. There was one joke I can remember off the top of my head that did make me laugh. DMC were in the middle of making they're debut album and Souichi was getting many letters from fans. Souichi reads a letter from a specific fan who is ill, and has to get surgery. This fan talks about how he's excited for the DMC debut album and wants to listen to it after his surgery, but there's a good chance that he might die if it fails. Souichi is moved by this letter and visits the fan as Krauser. It's a sweet scene and one of the few moments of the show where Krauser's soft side is displayed. He even brought him a basket of fruits. The emotions are building up, but it's revealed at the end of the episode that the fan was getting a circumcision and lied. That was hilarious. Can't believe I fell for that. Also, unrelated to this episode, but the song title "Fuckingham Palace" is fantastic. It's a song made by a completely different character and band, don't worry about it. Visually, Detroit Metal City is essentially a moving manga. It doesn't bother me, but the characters in motion look absolutely goofy and ridiculous. The character designs are not my cup of tea either. Some of the background characters are a little ugly, but I don't mind. The show, in general, looks silly. The only outlier would probably be the OP, which is one other positive I will mention. Satsugai is a great song, and I would highly recommend listening to it if you haven't. The OP is the only well animated part of this entire anime. Go figure. Overall, I thought Detroit Metal City was fine. Entertaining, but fine. It was never as funny as people made it out to be, and it was on my watch list since 2016. I mostly wanted to get it out of the way, but I was expecting so much more. This is another reason why you shouldn't trust MAL scores, kids. They're usually a little overblown and deceiving. And hey, if you hate this review, don't worry. Always remember that human language has no meaning. Language is just a human construct. So if you hate this review, it means nothing :^) I hope I made this review long enough to turn people away. I hope no one reads it. It's not great, but I'm going to upload it anyway. Happy Halloween. :) 6.66 out of 10. Hail Satan.

My stomach hurt for so much laughing lol. Now, to the review: Not so great on the art style, but better than moe -i mean pretty much anything is better than moe right?-- although not great, the soundtrack somehow managed to capture my attention, specially the oppening theme, and i really liked the characters, different from the most they looked real, and somehow relatable. overall an amazing anime for those who just want to have fun, without having to think deeply about the plot, the character's motivations, or anything so deeply, because, there's nothing so deep in this show, and that's perhaps the depth on itself. in my opnion, that's the type of anime i don't find a lot these days (at least for my tastes), something enjoyable without making me think to much, or cringe on some "modern" tendecies.

DMC is, as a whole, just like any other generic 12 episodes Romantic Comedy, but it has at it's favor the fact that is more unique and distinguishable, making it actually memorable for the viewer. What i mean by this is that in a structure and story point, DMC is just an episodic comedy series centered in Heavy Metal parodies and embarassing situations for the Main Character. It's plot is super basic, there is no clear message or goal, but in the end, it's not pretending to have it or looking for one. So there isn't any Character arc or much progress, because it's only focused on the comedy. The difference between DMC and any other rom-com is that it's far more unique. It's not about school or romance, it's about complete madness and chaos and Extreme heavy metal parodies. It's super fast paced, but it add to the madness tone of the series. The comedy works really well and it's clear what is going for. It has 2 stories per Chapter, making it really light and enjoyable to watch. The vaguest aspect of this series has to be the Animation. It's clearly going for a Manga/comic style and the animation is super basic and static, but it doesn't ruin anything at all. Also the Heavy Metal music is great and super fun. It does makes you laugh most of the times with how extreme and stupid the lyrics are. Overall, is a very light and fun series. It's not pretending to be more than a dumb crude Comedy, and it has a premise and humor that makes it distinguishable from the rest. A funny and memorable OVA series that is not going for more than that.

--------------HAIL SATAN, Johannes Krauser II DMC! DMC! DMC! - - - THIS IS NOT FOR THE "WOKE"/PERMANENTLY OFFENDED PEOPLE- - - This is a short story about a guy who wants to be a singer of sweet Swedish pop / indie songs but he ended up as the leader singer in the most important death metal band in Japan, and hides his DEATH METAL identity from his family, friends and the girl he likes.... The story is full of death metal stereotypes, and over the top and ridiculous sense of humour. It is exaggerated, politically incorrect, it's funny ASF! and I loved it. Ps: I just wish that this story had better art / animation and more chapters. 9/10

This is one of the craziest most bizarre comedy anime with a lot of vulgar words used in a proper and in a most offensive manner. The story is about Negishi Souichi who sort of has a dual personality. He's a quiet person who loves romcom and melodious pop and on another hand, he's the frontman of the craziest metal band in the indie 'DMC'. The anime is about how he copes up with him being a silent person and how he gotta muscle up to be the craziest man in the whole universe. The scenarios and the situations he falls into are absolutely crazy and love his Krauser persona where his fans are just 'adorable'. The dialogues, the characters, the music lyrics were some of the best and the most erratic ones. Personally didn't like the shifts in the angle of the presentation, regardless this is one of my favorite craziest anime. Highly recommended!

I gotta say, this aged really well. Most of the themes explored or hinted at in this one are still relevant today. Especially the duality of who we are in public eye vs who we are at home in the comfort of our family and friends and how sometimes the 2 can be so so different to the point they are unrecognizable and the struggle to put the 2 together into one cohesive person sometimes. In the age of social media we kinda struggle with that more then ever. This anime is a little pervy, a little funny, a bit philosophical. It's really worth a watch.

Detroit Metal City is a black comedy anime focused on Souichi Negishi, a young man who unwillingly serves as the lead guitarist and frontman of the popular titular death metal band under the guise of Johannes Krauser II, a supposed demonic terrorist from hell who raped and murdered his parents. Negishi despises his involvement with the band and desires to be a successful pop musician. But he finds his direction with this career going nowhere and he uses the anger and frustration from this and other low points of his personal life to vent as Krauser during the band’s musical performances. Detroit Metal City is largely a one-trick pony type of comedy that you will love or hate depending on how well you enjoy its crass comedy and misanthropic premise. The content won’t be for everyone as there is enough mention of rape, scenes of violence, unwanted sexual advances, and plenty of profanity uttered throughout this series. The series is set up into 12 two-segment episodes at a combined 14-minute length that largely follow the same gag where Negishi’s optimism in believing in the best of everyone blows up in his face and he uses his alter-ego as Krauser to vent his rage in some crass, over-the-top manner either in public or during any event involving the band. I suppose as far as my perceptions go for Detroit Metal City, there is some surprising insight it dabbles into outside its crass humor. The series isn’t afraid to show how cynical life can be for people just graduating from college, with Negishi stuck in a successful profession he wants nothing to do with, struggling in his more ideal direction for being a musician, his efforts at optimism blowing up in his face, and using his alter-ego as Krauser to vent his frustrations while on the job and only making Detroit Metal City even more successful. It also has fun ripping into elements of musical subcultures as outside of shock rock, the series rips into pop, rap, and punk rock at points in the series; which is noticeable if you follow the posturing and how inane the lyrics of songs from musicians in these genres are throughout the series. At its best, Detroit Metal City has excellent comedic timing in showing off how cruel the world can be for Negishi and the crass ways he vents at his misfortunes while in the guise of Krauser. Praises aside, Detroit Metal City isn’t without its imperfections. With Negishi’s misery and his crass ventings as Krauser largely being the main attraction to the series, the series does occasionally stumble in some of the segments it offers up. Some segments devolve into milking humor off bodily fluids or Negishi’s love interest, Yuri, falling victim to Negishi usually letting his act as Krauser get the better of him during outings with the pair, the latter crossing close into misogyny as Yuri, dumbfoundingly, still sticks with Negishi in spite of his blunders as Krauser. Plus outside of Negishi, there isn’t much else to get enjoyment out of with the series as all the other characters follow simple character types meant to reflect the cynical and inane world view that is depicted within Detroit Metal City. Overall, Detroit Metal City’s crass humor has great timing in its high points and is surprisingly believable at depicting how cruel life can be for college graduates in the working world. However as mentioned, its humor is largely a one-trick pony relishing off Negishi’s misery and his crass antics as Krauser. If you can’t get any enjoyment out of this, you will more than likely not get as much enjoyment out of the humor offered with the series.

The premise of the show is very interesting. A struggling pop singer who decides to work as a death metal singer. Hilarity ensues. The art style and the animation in general is fairly crude, but it kind of works with the general crudeness of the anime. The comedy is most crude toilet humor, but it works for the most part. Do not go in expecting the pinnacle of sophistication, you will be disappointed. Fairly episodic, but there is one general story which is extremely simple and easy to follow. Music is over the top and vert crude to the point of parody, you simply cannot take this show seriously at all. If you want an anime with over the top crude humor, then this fits the bill very well.

This anime excels for a very simple reason: it takes advantage of the medium. And it's not as simple as "it has smooth animation." A couple minutes into the first episode and you'll quickly realize that this show is barely even animated! What it does do, however, is something that while I'm sure has been done before and since, I personally have only seen in Detroit Metal City, and that is, changing the size of the frame on a scene by scene basis. So while one shot may fill your TV screen, the next one might only be a square in the corner, or a sliver on the side. Some shots even change in size without any cuts. This is remarkably clever, as it A: does well to mask the low budget animation B: separates itself from the manga and gives you a reason to watch/read both C: is used for comedic effect And this comedic effect is incredible. There are scenes in which we'll see a character talking, not knowing how the character listening is reacting (as they're out of the shot), when suddenly the frame widens resulting in a comedic reveal of something that was there the whole time, just hidden from the viewer. I feel very passionate about this particular aspect of the show, and is one of the main reasons it has stayed in my mind for over a decade and why I keep coming back to watch (usually binge) this 3-hour masterpiece. Characters and story don't matter. You don't even need to love dark humor (you just need to be able to stand it) and liking metal music is not a requirement for enjoying this show either. Anyone who enjoys dissecting a director's creative choices or has even the slightest interest in shot composition will find something of value in this show.

Detroit Metal City: Leave it in 2008. Watching this anime was a neat experience, it's a short, energetic comedy that knows what it wants to be, clocking in around the 3 hour mark. The focus on death metal instantly grabbed me, and I think they did a really good job on the music itself. DMC heavily relies on its gag humour, which works most of the time, but other times falls flat on its face. The characters all have their own personality and I especially enjoy the main character Negishi and his alter ego Krauser II. The plot is simple yet effective and I don't think it needed to be anymore complicated. Comedy is one of the most subjective things in history, and for me the humour in this anime is a mixed bag. It made me laugh at the sheer absurdity of the things that were happening, and other times I sat in my chair with a straight face looking at what was unfolding. This show uses a lot of *rape* in it's humour which heavily turns me off. It's actually a huge part of the shows identity and *rape* is mentioned and joked about every episode. It is kind of fascinating to see this though, anime studios nowadays would never be able to get away with this. (Note how DMC is obviously not to be taken seriously, still it rubs me the wrong way to laugh about *rape* jokes) Overall I enjoyed myself watching this absurd show. If the edginess was toned down a bit and they focused even more on Negishi leading his double life, almost in a Slice of life kind of way, this would be one of my favourite comedy's I have ever seen. My feelings are mixed, but I have no regret watching Detroit Metal City whatsoever. SATSUGAI!!

One of the most hilarious anime I've ever seen. The story is about Souichi Negishi, a boy living in Tokyo and the leader of a heavy metal band called Detroit Metal City (DMC). The boy, in the group, plays Johaness Krauser II, a sort of demon who kills and rapes anyone. This character, however, clashes with Negishi's true personality, that is, a shy and kind boy, with a passion for pop music. Negishi will therefore have to try to live while maintaining a constant balance between his two lives. Needless to say, because of this, some totally crazy situations will be created. The dark humor of the series and his eccentricity make it an absolute must-watch with over the top and nonsensical situations that always manage to raise a smile. The story is quite easy to understand and in the episodes we see Negishi's daily life, between his commitments as Krauser II and his private life where he tries to make his crush fall in love with her. In each episode, two different stories are usually told and each episode is self-contained. The characters are excellent, Negishi is an excellent protagonist and even the secondary characters are incredibly fun. I really liked the animation, different style from what I'm used to but still nice to see. An anime not for everyone but which, for obvious reasons, should not be taken seriously and indeed the anime itself is aware of being a parody of the metal world with the total exasperation of concepts such as: "All metal singers are Satanists" or things like that. The humor is brilliant and the gags within it all work. Furthermore, it also lasts very little, just 12 episodes of around 14 minutes each. In short, Detroit Metal City is an experience that you will rarely have to relive and which, therefore, I recommend to everyone.
Sakamoto9000
It's as if the MC was a slice of life character by day, and some crazy gore mf by night. The character design follows suit, calm and rational everyday characters have normal clothing, acting.... well, normal. Meanwhile, the metal heads have face paint, face masks and demonic attire, acting insane and screaming the r word like there is no tomorrow. All of the episodes last around 12 minutes, and there isn't really a particular main story going on, each episode features a different set of events. So it's a really easy to digest, and it really compliments the gag humor, everything is nice and quick, not dragged out. And just to be clear with the gag humor, it doesn't hold back, and it's really good. In terms of art, it's really good, the details on the MC's outfit are amazing, every aspect has been paid close attention to, whether it be the long black nails, sharp fangs or even the white fancy collars around the hands, all the details perfectly capture the demonic metal feel. In terms of music, there aren't really any specific parts where it's JUST music, it's always accompanied by gag humor, so it's more or less just a sub-genre. The opening song is pretty good though, it's pretty rad, I would prob. find myself listening to it. Both opening and ending songs follow suit the whole slice of life by day and crazy metal stuff by night, cause the opening song is metal song and ending is... something soft, no clue about the genre. Overall, great show, don't really have anything negative to say about it.

Part 1 English Part 2 Bahasa Indonesia -------------------------------------- Well, Detroit Metal City is an interesting anime to say the least. The story revolves around the main character, Soichi Negishi, who dreams of becoming a gentle pop musician but ends up becoming the lead vocalist of a death metal band called Detroit Metal City (DMC). The show follows Negishi as he struggles to balance his dual identity and navigate the world of death metal music. The characters in Detroit Metal City are quite unique, with Negishi being the most complex of them all. He is torn between his love for pop music and his obligations to DMC, which creates a lot of internal conflict for him. The other members of the band are also quite eccentric, with their over-the-top personalities and love for all things death metal. Music is a big part of this anime, and the death metal tracks featured in the show are actually quite catchy, despite the gruesome lyrics. The show also does a good job of parodying the death metal subculture, with its exaggerated violence and Satanic imagery. As for my enjoyment experience, I have to say that I found Detroit Metal City to be quite entertaining. The humor is dark and sarcastic, which I personally found to be hilarious. The show does have some crude humor and sexual references, so it may not be for everyone. All in all, I would recommend Detroit Metal City to fans of dark humor and metal music. While it may not be for everyone, the unique characters, catchy music, and overall absurdity of the show make it a worthwhile watch. So, if you're in the mood for something different, give Detroit Metal City a try. It's a 5.818181818181/10 score, but definitely worth checking out.

Note: DMC is short for ‘Detroit Metal City’. A story about an indie death metal band slowly becoming a living legend by setting their gigs on fire, constantly raping their haters, humiliating their rivaling bands/musicians and many more. At least, that’s according to the most fanatical DMC fans who are creating most of these legendary stories. Some of them are somewhat true, some are pure fiction. Whatever the truth is, it always gets DMC higher on with their reputation within the Tokyo music scene. Episodes are half the length of a regular show. They are very dense and all characters speak much faster, but it goes well with the overall comedic appeal. Voice acting is top tier quality – fast spoken, with perfectly presented emotions (or totally emotionless and robot-like, when it comes to posts on DMC forum). Krauser’s death metal voice is pure mastery. He talks (and ‘sings’) that way not only on gigs, but in regular dialogues. This is something that real-life death metal vocalists never do. The jokes are hilarious, but also unbelievably vulgar. Simple animation only increases all the fun. Everything in this show is made for the purpose to make the watcher burst out of laughter many times each episode and there is no need to search for anything else. On the negative side, it’s just not for anyone. Not everybody likes vulgar comedy full of cursing, aggressive music or having for a director profane, violent and horny metalhead woman. No moral lessons should be taken from this show (yes, that means no butt slapping your friend with his own tambourine or spitting on punk singers – or even on your potential girlfriend). If you don’t mind any of these issues, watch it and fall in love with it. Pros: + great comedy + shorter episodes bring more consistent pacing + voice acting + music creates good atmosphere & synergy with comedy Cons: - niche appeal; not for everyone Double-edged: +/- very dark humor, you may question your moral values 10/10 (MASTERPIECE)
