Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie

Around this point I feel story should've been going somewhere. Some hero's journey stuff or whatever else is out there. Instead I keep seeing the same thing. Our guys who are competent, rational, amazing vs their guys who are incompetent, stupid and depraved. And then lots of spectacle. By the way I love spectacle. Im not saying it's shallow or anything. That's what's good about the film. The bad is the lack of substance. Even the main character is still devoid of it. Basically the same character from episode 1. I think it's safe to say there are no character arcs going on. Im sorry, but beautiful animation is wasted on this story.

In the approximate time it takes Tanya to turn a battle around I saw the series and the movie lol. If we talk about the plot we find a mix between a warlike environment about a supposed world war in an isekai, and whether or not you want it is an interesting plot for two genres not innovative, but if striking and entertaining if they are developed correctly. Speaking of development, we find something entertaining and unfortunately at the same time repetitive at some points, surely everything has given us the feeling you want it or not: she and her battalion destroying everything without problems wherever they go and a final "antagonist" who is blessed with divine grace to give them up the butt a bit (fight fire with fire). But as I said, thanks to a good development, the few points that are repeated do not affect the series in an alarming way and make sure that the plot does not choke you thanks to those outcomes that, with good animation, manage to intrigue you enough to see how it will look. the following denouement and especially in this film where the combats have been much more intensified by a good animation that has given life to these aerial combats. And finally the point that staggers between the worst and the best at the same time. It is about the little development of the characters that surround our protagonist and that carries a great weight for the main character since by the time we get bored the series could go down. And what I am trying to say is that Tanya has been a crucial point for the series and if such a character were in the series it could not be the same even close (imagine a kind and generous protagonist like all of that isekais… I gag just think about it) Thanks to Tanya and his excessive selfishness for "a 12-year-old girl", which fits perfectly for the plot, helps to intensify through the script those moments where his knowledge gets ridiculed or surprised the high command even creating that essence through the ridicule or the epic moments that manages to give it those touches that startle.

I can still feel the dread curling in my stomach as I watched each and every moment of this wonderful movie. As an avid action fan, I couldn't help but be thrilled at Degurechaff's victories and dread her losses/missed opportunities. The story jumps right in without any recap, so it's best to watch the previous series, but let's be honest if you're here for this movie specifically you would've watched the series. The music and art are spectacular as always with the sounds always amped up for dramatic effect or quieted down to amplify the sense of death/not blow your ears out which I appreciate(a lot). As someone who knows these characters I'm fine, but outside of those who know it's hard to get a sense of who each person is and what there purpose/ reason to act the way they do, again this is probably intentional as to redirect to the main series. Nevertheless, the actions scenes are phenomenal and while the gore is only slight it does reach the intended course to make the audience understand that while the story is thrilling, it is by no means an advocate for war. I enjoy how that while only elaborated slightly, the various number of characters have different ideals and objectives each portrayed with various degrees of success. At times I wanted to yell at certain characters and other times cheer for them, the fact the movie made me feel that , overall makes it a damn good movie. I can't deny part of my enjoyment comes from the sheer thrill I get from watch Degurechaff's face morph in utter delight or despair as she faces being x. I hate being x as a character but love him as a villain, his existence makes me sympathize with Degurechaff so easily and his role lights the story in a new perspective. I feel like I'm rambling, so I'll just conclude by saying this is a damn good movie that you have to watch preferably with popcorn and soda , so you can spew at the person next to you when you feel really happy or pumped up or pissed(JK :) Don't really do that unless you know them real well and won't get sued or anything:))

“SPOILERS FOR YOUJO SENKI SEASON 1” Well better late than never eh? Youjo Senki was one of the most entertaining anime from 2017 and gave birth to anime’s most vicious loli, Tanya von Degurechaff. The series has been, without a doubt, one of my favourite Isekai series but the show was left on a cliffhanger that left to the possibility of a season two. What we go was not season two but a sequel movie which followed up after season one. A bit annoying but hey, we are getting more Tanya so who am I to complain. Now that I have finally got around to watch it, what did I think? Well I’ll tell you. Bear in mind though, I’ve never done a review for an anime movie but talking about this series will not be a problem so lets get to it. Sit back relax and salute your ass off as I present to you the sequel movie to Youjo Senki. Or by its English name, Saga of Tanya the Evil. Lets begin. Story: 8/10 Following after season one, Tanya and the rest of the 203rd airborne company have just finished quelling a rebel force. As soon as she returns from the mission, she and her company are immediately sent north to keep an eye on The Federation. But after The Federation open fired, they attack. The war between The Imperium and the Federation has begun and Tanya must now take her forces and push pack The Federation. Meanwhile on the Federation side, a new mage recruit by the name of Mary Sioux has joined the forces after being blessed by God (or Being X) and is seeking revenge for the death of her father by the hands of Tanya. It’s pretty much is more of the story that we got to see in season one but with some added elements that will cause Tanya more trouble. Although that is definitely not a bad thing. Being X is still toying with Tanya by facing another mage blessed by god and not giving her a break whatsoever. This is especially true when it comes to the final act but we will get to that. The first act pretty much sets the stage for the movie to follow. The Federation attacks, The Imperium fights back. It helps us realise that Tanya’s fighting isn’t done yet and might not be for some time. The second act helps set the scene between the eventual fight between Tanya and Mary and to help further ignite the fuel for war. I might sound like I'm skimming over this but really, there is nothing much new in terms of what we already have seen from season one. Like I said, definitely not a bad thing. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Although I will say that I’m surprised that Being X doesn’t have much direct involvement in this movie. Being X mainly works behind the shadows as usual but I feel like Being X could have been more direct towards Tanya, especially after Tanya encounters Mary. Being X could have toyed with Tanya but nope nothing happens. The final act is where things start to get interesting as we see this movie go all out with the fighting and we see how Tanya and the rest of the 203rd airborne company copes with such an overwhelming force. It gives this thought in your head that maybe this would be too much for Tanya and the 203rd airborne company. It makes for a nice change of pace considering that Tanya has been squashing everyone she has been fighting. Having an overwhelming enemy at your doors and fighting a mage that is on equal footing with Tanya makes for some of the most tense moments in the movie and kept me hooked to my seat as I kept watching. It was something that this movie needed. Something to make my eyes glue to the screen as I kept watching and it did that. Characters: 7/10 Tanya is still Tanya in this movie and nothing much has changed about her other than some revelations in the movie that she has experienced that I won’t say specifically due to spoilers. The revelations though do help give some more light of what Tanya thinks about fighting in wars and why she wants to stay behind the front lines. Her experience in this movie gives her some justification and to make sure she continues to defy Being X (as futile as it may be). Being pushed to her limits was also refreshing as we know now going forward that she isn’t straight up overpowered and there are people who can match her in a firefight; which did lead to some intense moments in the movie. The other character the movie focused on was Mary Sioux and I just couldn’t get into her. She is a rather one dimensional character with her sole trait being that she is obsessed with avenging her father’s death. That’s pretty much it. It helps give perspective of how Tanya’s killing spree is affecting other people’s lives but honestly, she is just there so that Being X can push Tanya to her breaking point. So that’s all she is really, a vessel for Being X to toy Tanya with. Animation: 8/10 Studio Nut continues where it left off from season one. I have to say, it does look like more stuff is happening on screen which helps increase the scale of the battles. For an episodic series, the animation would look really good. For a movie though, it looked a bit stiff at times. Some of the scenes in the film where Nut could have flexed their muscles looked a bit janky at times and was moving a frame by frame pace that was quite noticeable. Though the magical bullets and explosions still look cool and there were some really good shots so so it till can look really good, I just think it could have looked better in some scenes of the movie. Sound: 10/10 Nothing really to complain here. The sound department was one of Youjo Senki’s strongest points and it continues here. The bullet sound effects, the explosions and other noticeable factors in the sound department made it felt like everything had a noticeable impact to it. Same goes with the soundtrack as it still has that bombastic choir and instrumentals to it that made it rather epic to listen to and to get you hyped. While I didn’t notice any new tracks, the soundtrack was really good overall that it didn’t really matter. The only real new notable song coming from this movie was "Remembrance" by MYTH & ROID and act as a nice calm down down for the credit sequence while still having that MYTH & ROID style that makes them recognisable. Seriously, what a year MYTH & ROID are having at the moment. This, “Shadowgraph” from Boogiepop and Others and while I was harsh on Isekai Cheat Magician’s opening, the song itself “PANTA RHEI” is still really good. With them doing the opening for one more anime this year, I'm looking forward to it. Conclusion: As a follow up to Youjo senki, the movie, I would say, does its job well as being a good follow up. Tanya is still a great antagonist and this movie doesn’t change that. The ost and sound effects still kick ass and the animation, while stumbling in some areas, still looks good. My main gripe with the movie was Mary herself and I feel like the movie didn’t do a good job of fleshing her out. Of course, there maybe another chance because the movie was left on ANOTHER cliffhanger that makes me question whether we are going to get more. With season one, I felt that the 12 episodes we got were good enough for it to be its own story. But with the way the movie went, it now feels kind of unfinished and stuck in a limbo until we get an announcement of a follow up. If we do, then these last couple of sentences don’t matter. If we don’t, well then we are out of luck and must seek the original material. Still, if you want more Youjo Senki, this film will certainly fill that need as it is a good follow up and I salute Tanya for it. My Personal enjoyment: 9/10 Overall score: 8.4/10 Recommendation: Watch it

Youjo Senki Movie picks off right where the anime series left off, and it's every bit as good, and in many ways even better than before. If you haven't watched the anime, go do so now. I won't repeat my review in depth, but let's just say that production values have been cranked up even further, the solid story and characters remain, leading to an amazing visual and storytelling spectacle. If military and magic anime is your thing, you MUST give this a watch. Like seriously, it's good. Story is a direct continuation from the anime, the art and sound are absolutely mindblowing yet again, and the main character continues to impress with every scene.

(NOTE: This is actually a review of both season 1 and the movie. I scored 8 for season 1 and 10 for the movie.) Anime Review: The Saga of Tanya the Evil This is one of the shows that I did not expect to like at first, especially I'm not into military, history, and political stuff, and their terms used is a little bit foreign to me. I wasn't very hooked at the beginning and that's probably because of my interest. But when I continued watching, it's getting way better than what I expected. I love the personality of Tanya and how it was low key developed throughout the season and the movie. At first, she wouldn't even care about life and death itself (except hers). But when the story progresses (especially in the movie), she became a considerate leader. However, she still prioritizes her freedom and well-being and she's looking for a way to get out of the bloody situation, which is true to human nature. For me, the first season is like a long introduction and its last episode is truly the beginning. The movie is a masterpiece! It is very well-directed and the phasing is perfect. I love the symbolism they've used like the cliffhanger ending where the cards were shown and it actually means a lot depending on the viewers' interpretation. The action and animation is splendid. There are a lot of things happening in one frame that is perfectly portraying the intensity of war. Props to the voice actors, they gave more life and emotions to these characters. Lastly, the lesson to ponder in this story is deep and it significantly show how complex our emotions are. Emotions can lead us to any possible actions, no matter how good or bad the decision is. I guess when you think of the word "monstrous", it's the humanity itself, and we're not even guilty of it.

The youjo senki movie gave me the feeling of being excited which I've never felt in a long time. I won't waste your time so let's start the review. The story is what would you expect for a movie fast paced but it is truly done well and the relationship between being x and tanya really showed how either of them really hate each other for example the last battle of tanya and Mary sue. Wish it had more character development for Mary sue but I guess you can't fit all that in the movie. The art was amazing near perfect with the landscapes and the amazing art in the end. I have a problem with some of the cgi which resulted me in giving this movie a 9 during the fight scenes the humans are badly animated but only for a short while either than that everything about the art is amazing with all the explosions and magic. The sound is great I love how they put back the music from the old one but I know some people don't like reusing some music but I think it fits with the whole movie giving you back the feels either way great soundtracks. Also the laser sounds was cool really felt like it's used in the godzilla movie. The characters in the show was amazing didn't feel much about the side characters though the soldiers were basically just drinking and blowing people's heads off. But I think this is where Mary Sue shines it showed the anger of her father being killed by tanya especially in the last scenes and how much she cared for him but I still blame being x for that:/ also Tanya will always be a good character. Enjoyment 100% especially in the fight scenes where you're just at the edge of your seats also it made me think alot about what the psychological things Tanya said. Overall really amazing show even on a budget hope it gets more recognition since it's well known for fans but not to mainstream audience. Can't wait for season 2. Hope this helped you watch the movie!

I love Youjo Senki so much that the main original series got an 8 from me. It's great that we got a movie but it's not enough. I want a full adaptation on Tanya's revenge quest against Being X and I won't be satisfied until it happens. Animation: it's incredibly inconsistent throughout. Some action scenes get the fluid animation treatment, others get the stiff animation treatment. Some action scenes are incredibly fast-paced, others slow down randomly. It's a mess. Sound: the sound design of this movie is insane. It's not perfect but it was really close to that. Story and characters: 1) SPOILER: I think Tanya should've able to kill Mary. 2) SPOILER: I wanted to see a "physical" appearance of Being X. All things considered, it's still Youjo Senki. We get a badass maniac of a loli, an alternate universe of the World History, war and mecha-magic-old school-weaponry. It gets a 7/10 from me and I can't wait until we get a new season of Tanya and her violent adventures.

Youjo Senki Movie (2019) Another instalment for the series in the form of a movie this time. Tanya doesn't ever seem to get a break going from one front to next no matter how blissfully she thinks her plans are going. The story is, as usual, more or less the same except the Federation are shown as the main Antagonist. The similar show of historical familiarity is amazing. You see this as you watch it. Art is great as before and runs with maybe a slightly more polished look. The magic being show especially Tanya with her prayers are amazing as usual. Mary and her magic and the looks in her eyes of rage are of incredible detail also. The sound you would expect is insane. The SFX they used here is absolutely perfect and I love shows that take proper note of the available sound sets. Voices are also very strong and passionate. Characters throughout keep the demeanour expected. Tanya's side hasn't really changed and the side of Mary is just her replaced as the character the dad was. It is not a slight as the characters are superb and Mary is actually a better character. The movie was amazing and super enjoyable. Overall I actually prefered the main series for the complexity and more involvement of being X directly. The movie is still a solid 9.99 just not quite a 10 for me as with the main show.

Some Spoilers included Every asked yourself "Was this anime made for me?" is how in my opinion i would describe Youjo Senki Movie. Not everyone can enjoy this as it caters to mainly a specific audience. The story is nothing unique but interesting to watch. The art is good for a movies standard but great compared to its first season. Loved the soundtrack it fit the movie like a glove and the sound effects were very enjoyable. Character wise it's just a standard hero vs anti-hero. The anti-hero has amazing plot armor (ironically named Mary sue) not dying when she got shot through the chest three times which is my only complaint. Enjoyed it very much and give makes me happy that they included some historical references. 9/10

I'd like to preface this review by saying that Youjo Senki anime series is probably the show I enjoyed the most in more than 10 years of watching. It's one of the few shows that I gave a 10/10 alongside Rakugo and HxH, but I gave this movie only an 8. The stuff I enjoyed first before I rant. It was an interesting take to have an actual Mary Sue to be the main antagonist named "Mary Sioux". She even has the revenge backstory and the ancient "I suck at practice but I kick ass at the real battlefield" trope that mainstream shounen protagonists used to have. Our main gal Tanya now looks like the generic anime villain she has to defeat in order to "save the world from evil". It's the believer of blind faith against the chosen man that detests His presence. However, I noticed that there were parts that the quality didn't look like it was a theatrical release, but rather a weekly show struggling by its schedule. I expected less use of 3D models for mob characters for the movie, but alas, only certain fight scenes had that 2D sakuga feel. Without going into spoilers, the church punching scene against Mary was the one I felt the most lacking. I praise the amazing pacing of the anime series where 24 minutes felt like an hour's worth of entertainment. It had an amazing balance of fast-paced action and toned-down character scenes, which made us like Tanya even more as the protagonist fighting against fate. This movie, however, felt like they omitted those character scenes to fit all the information in the span of 2 hours. This statement might rustle some jimmies, but I had this nagging thought in my brain while watching mid-way through the movie: "Am I watching a recap episode of a series like what they did in Episode 6.5?". I wish this was made as a half-cour season 2 instead where the similar type of pacing in the first season was used. stil breddy gud tho i liek lolis with guns 8/10

This is how you properly use the budget of a movie to enhance animation, art, and sound. I cannot stress enough how much the sound in particular enhanced all of the action scenes. This movie is a much watch with high-quality headphones or a surround-sound system. Animation wise the fights are spectacular and exciting. Later in the film, when they face the federation, CGI is utilized properly to create a massive horde of men that really creates a sense of dread. The stakes are raised and the sounds of war really cements a feeling of dread in the latter portion of the film. Unfortunately, the movie is not a contained piece. It acts as a bridge between the first and eventual second season. This holds it back in the story department in my opinion. Despite the antagonist, Mary Sue, having an excellent vocal performance and expressive animation-- her characterization suffers from being introduced in a movie. I feel this movie will stand as a much better work once season 2 is introduced. Right now it just has me itching for more. I wont go into spoiler territory, but the ending of the film and opening scene are implying some BIG moments in the future of this franchise. In summation: Story 7/10 - Acts as more of a bridge rather than a contained work. It is more so a tease of what's to come. Art 9/10 - Amazing and expressive animation. CGI is utilized properly, although is still somewhat detracting. (CGI still has that effect on me) Sound 10/10 - The best use of sound I have heard in an anime period. Character 7/10 - Side-characters are expressive and fun-- but somewhat unremarkable. Tanya is given more emotional depth and an undying hatred of communism that is hilarious. Mary Sue has potential and needs more than just a movie. Enjoyment 10/10 - The battles are what gave me the greatest enjoyment and pleasure from viewing this. I have to give it a perfect score for enjoyment or else I would be lying to myself. Their was an audible cheer in the theater during a 'special' moment towards the end of the film when Mary Sue and Tanya have an intimate exchange in a church. Outstanding moments. Overall 8/10 - Held back by its bridging nature rather than being a standalone story. I feel if we ever get a conclusion film following a future final season-- something like "The End of Tanya the Evil" it could easily be a 10/10. Only time will tell though.

I am not good at making reviews. I don't even think what I make here is even worth being called a reviews, but I would just going to say a thing that been bothering me. And yes, I aware that what I am going to say is probably already written carefully by the author to be just like what happened, but I simply can't just not tell about this thing. The thing is Youjo Senki is always been one of the anime that got me hooked up to be watching anime since it is a part of the Isekai Quartet that you want it or not has to know what the plot behind every show there. This anime is no exception, the art is very unique (honestly never seen any art style like this), the story is good considering actual History and Fantasy barely get better when performed at the same time, but again this anime is the exception. Anyway enough talking, I wouldn't consider this a spoiler but I would try my best to not tell the literal story in this movie. In my opinion, the so called "antagonist" here is no cap the most dummy personality I ever seen. Not even on anime but also real life. I just can't stand how the think is just too selfish to begin with. You probably would know when you watch the movie here, but seriously I can't stand the character. Like okay sure your family member died in a war, then what you gonna do? Go on a revenge to seek the fallen family there? Okay that's good and all but do it reallly think it's the best way you could do it when all of the same family member that suffer the same problem didn't do it. Okay my english is bad right now, probably sound like a lunatic but you will get the point when you watch this movie. All and all, a good show. Recommended to watch

In the midst of writing my review for this movie, I accidently refreshed the page, losing all my content. So, a digest review, I guess: Art is just a lot better. You can tell there's more love and detail put into the movie compared to the anime. Tanya and the other characters look way better when moving their mouths, expressing emotion, and even just overall feel of the characters feels smoother. In the few battle sequences there were, it felt a lot more impactful. There was the impact of an aerial fight that was not there in the first season. Backgrounds look spectacular still, and it just goes to show how backgrounds matter in battle choreography when fights are shown in aerial urban combat. It felt like the characters were actually flying through the environment, and not jarring. This was more about the 3d backgrounds, which looked way better than the anime. Explosions look a lot more detailed and realistic rather than copy pasted. However, there are really just only a few battles, and despite them being quite well made, a lot of the movie does not really have any battle sequences. Sure, the highlight of the movie was probably the initial battle sequence at Teigenhoff of Mary and Tanya, but even then, that 10 second or so sequence was still worse than Levi's escape in Attack on Titan. It's lower quality, and it's also a lot shorter. For a movie with a movie budget, you'd think that the movie would have much more battles in quantity and quality. I don't know the budget since it's not publicly shown, but I imagine it had at least the budget of the first season of the show. So over double the budget the team had for the anime, since only 1:40 of content needed to be shown rather than 4 hours. I railed pacing in the anime for the first season. It's a lot better, despite there still being no real monologuing from Tanya. That being said, it does slow down considerably in the material it decides to adapt. The movie really only shows two major battles. Despite that, the movie also covers A LOT of material. How come? Well, the movie just removes a lot of the source material and skips it, while also retconning a lot of events and making it a lot different from the novel/manga. That being said, it's a much better alternative to the first season of the anime, which both skipped a lot of content and rushed through the few battles that it did adapt. In the material that the movie decides to adapt, I give it a thumbs up. A lot of things get skipped, but honestly, it's a decent retconning job. Mary Sue is also a lot more OP and in the movie, she's portrayed as much more of a threat and rival to Tanya than expected. But man, Teigenhoff is basically completely changed. Again, I'd like to re-iterate that the scenes that are shown in the anime are well paced for what they are. Added with the better animation and art, I'll bump up the movie and only the movie's rating to a 7. It's decent for what it is.

I like to keep things short, so here's my take. Btw you shouldn't watch this movie if you haven't already watched the prequel yet. - The story picks up right after the end of the anime series, nothing much has changed besides the settings so there's not much to discuss about without going into spoiler territory. - Animation didn't lose it's touch and the fight scenes are great, so you don't gotta worry about quality. There may be light spoiler here. - Now character, heres the thing that brought my overall score that could've been an 8 or 9 to a 7. The movie introduces Mary Sioux, that has now joined the army in order to avenge her father. What made me hate the character with a passion is that she is literally the incarnation of a cliche. Her plot armor incomprehensibly thick which was incredibly annoying. Her rash decision only lead to the deaths of her comrades yet she blames her incompetence at the Empire and Tanya as an excuse. I continuously question her actions and thought whenever the film focuses on her. Conclusion: I enjoyed the film, if you like the 1st season you should definitely watch it, but the newly introduced anti hero is incredibly annoying. It's not as if she's meant to be liked, but at least try to make some sense.
Shirogari
If you enjoyed the first season of this anime then I am pretty sure that you'll like this movie as well. Even though it's a direct continuation of the plot from the first season it works pretty well as a self-contained story for a movie. The characters are the same as the first season and the way the story plays out is similar as well, the only thing that changed is what enemies are being fought. The movie maintains the great pacing from the first season and improves on the animation even though there's still some clunky CGI in unimportant scenes. Overall it's a very solid movie and a good sequel.

Door opened I hated the antagonist, it felt forced, bad and that it honestly made no sense for me. the rest of the story is fine but Sioux, Mary was honestly the worst thing that happened to the story, I know the god is giving her more powers but it feels like she just got that powerful with full control over her powers instantly and that the author wanted to have an antagonist for the sake of having one, there is nothing wrong with her in of itself but also how she is blinded by rage also makes her very one sided. I am hoping to see her growth in the next season alongside with maybe some other characters development that we have been lacking (About all of them.) .Honestly the movie was closer to a 9 otherwise but this ruined it for me giving me my rating of 8. That aside, the animation is very good and the start was very satisfying but it annoys me how little we learned about the magic system in this movie again, I wish that next season gives us a bit more of that. The end of the movie was pretty good in isolation, it really showed us the consequence of the war. That aside, I am hopeful for the next season as the war will, once again, escalate. Final rating : 8 Silver door (See profile for more information on my ratings) Door closed.

Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie – (Rewatching/Reglazing) Some spoilers, but I tiptoe around them and keep it broad. Strengths Visuals – The visuals are great. The 3D is used acceptably, as it covers things that would’ve been hell for 2D animators to do (e.g., animating an army, showing a city while moving the camera to follow high-speed maneuvers, or wide desert shots). Additionally, the 2D art is strong too, with even a bit of symbolism in some shots. In summary, the 3D elements complement the 2D elements, and the overall product has a consistent art style with some slight imperfections due to the constant changing of backgrounds, which is acceptable given the nature of the battles. Show, don’t tell approach – Even though this is technically an isekai, it never feels like one. We don’t get endless monologues from the MC about the progression of the war. Instead, it’s subtle. For example, there’s a scene where one character has a bird’s-eye view of the attacking force and is taken aback by the sheer scale of war. Even the little things tell a lot — scenes with no dialogue just showing trenches, people marching, or tanks rolling in. Banter and characters – Tanya’s battalion is a joy to watch. Their banter is snappy and comes off as natural. Each character is given a moment to shine in battle. Sound design – Really good sound design. The explosions have heft but are not overpowering. The music supports the atmosphere, but sometimes the movie lets sound and voice acting take the lead. The main strength of the sound design is its effective use of mixing: voices always pop even while gunshots, artillery fire, and music play. I never felt like the voices were drowned out, which is unrealistic but makes for a good spectacle (though it cracks immersion a little). Sounds generally have good reverb, so you can tell if something is further away, but sometimes the background feels too silent for a warzone. The movie separates the imagery of ground war and aerial fights. Ground battles are given more care in terms of sound and music, partly because there’s no dialogue. I kind of wish the aerial battles had the same attention. In some late fights, the aerial combat feels oddly missing details — like when a guy slices a plane with no metal sounds, or when planes are shot down with little heft to the hit or explosion. In summary: the sound design is detailed and well-mixed, but voices and music sometimes dominate too much for the sound effects to really stand out. Structure and pacing – Easy to follow and never boring. The structure goes like this: scout USSR movements → fight USSR → blow up their HQ → back to war → mage fight → Tanya proposes and invents Blitzkrieg. One big enemy, one escalation, one movie. It also gives screen time and light development to the volunteer army, so they don’t feel like they came out of nowhere. Ending theme – The Myth & Roid ending theme is fitting. Even though the battle was won, the analogy one general makes — bloodied and bruised — lingers. It reminds you the movie is over, but the war isn’t (just like Tanya’s reframing of that analogy). Make-or-Break Elements Beginning exposition – It draws on history. If you know Soviet history, you’ll catch digs at Stalin, communist inefficiency, and political purges. But even without that context, the comedy can still land (e.g., blowing up the capital while “Josef not-Stalin” watches). Child soldier aspect – We’re a season, some specials, and now a movie deep, but it has to be said: the MC is a literal child. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s there for a reason. It makes Tanya stand out as a prodigy and a kind of myth in the army. Outsiders initially see her as a child, then realize she’s a soldier by conduct. The story continually uses Tanya’s age as a narrative and comedic tool (e.g., standing on a box to read a map). Loria (bald guy) – A joke character based on Beria Lavrentiy, with creepy “jokes” about women. Historically accurate reference, but it adds nothing but hit-or-miss comedy. Could’ve been cut. The mechanics of the magic system — The magic system is never truly expounded on even in the anime. Having recently rewatched it, I know that if you have a relationship with God, he can give you miracles, but typically magic is a resource to be used for things like shields or spells. But the characters never feel like they need to work around the limitations of their magic, so the magic system in the whole show isn't really the main focus, but I found it sometimes quite clunky and unimportant. The war aspect – e.g., the explanation of the strategies of each player, general plan (showing where the enemy is) is quite weaker than it was in the first season of the anime. I imagine this is noticeable for 2 reasons: one being the time constraints, and two being the ruining of the pacing if they added too much strategizing/padding. Exposition of the enemy is quite weak – Unlike the first season, the enemies of the empire had strong development and an arc that affected the characters in both camps. In this movie, the enemy's leadership (USSR counterpart) is treated as a joke instead of a force to be feared. The strategies and the care that season 1 took to give some heft to the situation of the enemy were lost due to its focus on the comedic aspects. Moreover, the effects of the failure of their strategy are never shown when they eventually lose. We only get to see Loria in despair in the same room with Josef. It is never clarified what the effects of the losses are, if there are any, making the fighting of the war feel inconclusive to me. Exposition of the enemy is quite weak – Same critique but with the U.S counterpart now. The U.S multinational army was merely a vehicle for Mary Sue to be in and grouped with. The fact that it is multinational is not apparent; they all speak the same language, and they all look quite the same. There is no nuance taken for it being a multiracial army. Additionally, the only exposition we get on them is that they are inexperienced; this never really comes to the forefront, and we never really see their inexperience, as we don't ever get to see them in action. The only time we do is when they get blown up. And the only time they are on screen is for Mary Sue to take the spotlight. Weaknesses “Mary Sue” → She’s not a character, she’s a plot device in many ways, and that kinda strips her down as a wall rather than an actual character you can't even root for or hate, you just don’t care. (She’s a mirror to Tanya (in how she brings emotions to combat her hate for God = her hate for Tanya), she’s also the opposite of Tanya (she is low ranking, naive, doesn’t follow the rule book, emotionally driven). But they are both being played with by God, but somehow I find it wrong to care for her because of how annoying and one-dimensional she is. The breakneck pace and equally breakneck camera angles can be disorienting, depending on your tolerance. You'll find yourself looking away briefly, trying to catch up with the action. Could’ve gone stronger on the anti-war elements. Tanya says it herself that she thinks that war is a waste of human resources and basically the worst part of history. Apart from showing the effects of the start of a world war — bodies piled up, lines, injured people, explosions, executions — it could’ve maybe gone deeper to form a more coherent overall message in an essay-style bit at the end with the perspective of a non-mage in the trenches. But its not all lost, with its pacing, it even gave some time to let us sit with the effects after the battle but its really quick and lacking. Thoughts: In my books, it’s a 9 because it juggles a lot of elements, pushes the story forward, gives a good fight, and ends up in a place where you’re curious where it leads to. All in 1 hour and 30 minutes, without it feeling unstructured, the content it covers is really well executed. But some of the elements are lacking, which is to be expected with the t…

tl;dr: More of the same with some changes to spice things up while also being better made. If you’ve already seen the main series, as is very much a requirement before watching this film, then there’s not much to talk about this film other than that it’s simply a solid continuation of the anime that plays to the same strengths, in that it entirely about an evil overpowered loli being a badass in a variety of ways. The narrative changes things up in a number of ways so that things don’t start getting repetitive and played out. The main one would be that the enemy is now the Russy Federation which changes things up in terms of the political and strategic sense and also allows the script to have a lot of fun talking trash about commies. But just as important is the proper introduction of a rival for Tanya, another Mary Sue type character literally named Mary Sioux, whose purpose seems to be to make Tanya seem even more overpowered and badass by showing she doesn’t just crush the average trash, but can thrash other overpowered characters as well. That combined with how the film feels better made than the main series in that it has better pacing in terms of what really matters, moments of Tanya being badass, as well in that it has better production values which results in the action being more exciting and the edgy monologues seem cooler, results in this film edging out the main series as somewhat better. As a final note, I liked how it just randomly threw in the great ED of the main series with new visuals just for the hell of it. This was then followed after a bit by the credits actually rolling as white text on black background as is the standard for films along with a song that was decent enough but didn’t match anywhere near as well as the OP and ED of the main series did.
