Asobi Asobase: Workshop of Fun

Mileage may vary with this series, seeing as comedy is entirely subjective, but I thought Asobi Asobase was brilliant. A culmination of macabre, surreality, and hilarity. This series is a punk rock version of many school-girl anime tropesーpersonally thought it was better at conveying this type of humor than Pop Team Epic and things like Ai-Mai-Mi, Teekyu, etc. • Typically if something gets too disgusting (in the manner of urine, feces, or other bodily fluids) I tend to think that things are being taken too far and exist only for a cheap shock, rather than having sustenance. Not this series! There is, quite literally, a scene where water leaks under the clubroom, the girls lie and say that it’s pee, and the teacher, in the spirit of Detective Conan, licks the water off of the floor to check to see if it’s urine. Normally, humor like that would be too raunchy and fall in line with series like Eiken or My Girlfriend is a Shobitch, but because of the grungy, extremist style of expressionーit actually works! Aside from this moment, there are numerous other otaku references, that stem from NEET culture, that are wildly entertaining. • The main three cast of girls exemplify flaws that you would imagine typical teenage girls would have; a blonde-haired half-Japanese girl (Olivia) is constantly expected to know how to speak English, so she pretends to know it and be well-versed in British cultureーthe discomfort of being in situations where she pretends to be a Westerner becomes amusing as the situations become more and more weirdly absurd. The escalation of certain situations reminds me of the stakes being raised in Kaiji, during the deathly gambling games. Uncomfortably intense moments! • There’s also a glasses-clad fujoshi and a girl that lacks any common senseーdue to her rich upbringing. The characters have faces that look like pop-surrealistic portraitures; a litany of crazy expressions: their eyes will bug out, their face will suddenly become hyper-realistic as a reaction, pruny cheeks, demoniac expressionsーthe works! I had a genuine sense of joy and cried from laughing while watching this series; something that is exceedingly rare for me, since I have seen such a wide array of anime; in other series, it often feels like the same five jokes are in every Japanese television show, but Asobi Asobase felt fresh in their perspective of typical anime humor. From what I could dig up on the MyAnimeList database, it seems that all of the voice actresses are fairly new talentsーthat being said, they blew the vocal work out of the park! I could easily rate their insane vocal performances as A+; I hope that their seiyū will get more work in future comedy roles, because they were incredible! • Overall, this series is indecent, gauche, aesthetically pleasing, and different than any other anime series that you’ll see. I suggest that you watch this, unless you’re easily offended or sensitive to perverted jokesーotherwise Asobi Asobase is the perfect series to sit down with a group of friends and laugh your asses off to. It’s difficult to describe the exact ambiance of this series, since it is a very reactionary/maniac showーbut, I believe that the enjoyable experience, that is Asobi Asobase, deserves an 8/10! • S/N: The ending theme is metal, hardcore, and very addictive; after I watched this series seasonallyーI still enthusiastically revisit the ED!

EH AA has been declining in quality lately; most of the jokes became stale and predictable. Kind of ironic considering AA is unpredictable by nature. The first half was hilarious but only a couple of episodes got some chuckles out of me in the second half. The main problem with this show is it's format. Gag humor has never really been my taste, i'm more of an humor with a plot type of guy. Grand blue does this nicely with it's format consisting of a strong plot point each episode that carries on into the next. AA has strong continuity too but since it's non linear by it's nature it comes off hard to set up good comedic timing for me to burst out laughing. Grand blue struggled in the first couple of episodes while AA started off strong. It's funny how they took opposite directions of quality as the season progressed. Grand blue improved it's comedic timing and character development (which isn't that important in comedy) with hilarious interactions and sort of wholesome moments. I think the biggest difference between GB and AA is that GB has more downtime in between the gag comedic punches to surprise the audience for better reactions. I guess the best description to give AA is that it's a fun and wacky gag comedy but comes off too predictable later on. I give AA a 7/10

‘’Not what it seems’’ is far from enough to describe how the poster above fools you. Asobi Asobase is the exact opposite of cute and friendly moe show. It is a loud, profane, vulgar and atrociously hilarious show. It is about three girls with wildly different personalities coming together to form a new pastime club to…..pass time, playing games and stuff. As much as benign as that sounds, Asobi Asobase is full of toilet humor and inappropriate jokes, that will leave you wondering….in simple words ‘’WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?’’ You see in this show a man fires lasers out of his butt and there is a bug that is probably more ripped than you are, so simply put…..well actually there is no ‘’simply put’’ for this madness of a show. —Story and narrative— For a show like this, story and plot are pushed away in order to fit in as much as jokes as possible. So let’s review Asobi Asobase as a comedy show, purely a comedy show. It will not be wrong to say that, like many other comedy anime, some jokes fall flat but this is counter by the frequency of the jokes being thrown. If a joke is a bad one chances are that it is quickly followed by a good one. The best part of the show are the running gags that are actually funny throughout the show. There is attention to continuity which is quite surprising for a show like this. —Characters— The characters are the heart and soul of the show. All of their quirks and features and distinct and well put together. Hanako is rich but as dumb as one can be. She is probably a reincarnation of the devil but that probably isn’t even enough to describe all the hell she creates. Olivia is half American but doesn’t know English at all. Expect jokes related to her poor English a lot. Kasumi is a fujoshi and androphobic. But her shyness is totally deceptive as she is as obnoxious as other two. The reoccurring characters are all unique from a wild digibro to a trap……to a guy that shoots lasers from his butt, yeah how could’ve I forgotten him. —Animation and Sound— If there is one thing Asobi Asobase lacks, it is its production qualities. The art style is really rough to look at first. The animation itself isn’t bad at all but the art takes a while to get used to. There is one thing that is worth mentioning, the faces. The reaction faces in this show puts other comedy shows to shame. The OST isn’t really a standout but the ED song of this show aptly describes this show, how demonic it is. While the OP is cute and innocent. The voice actors (especially that of Hanako) did a tremendous job, from speaking expeditiously to screaming on the top of their lungs. —Conclusion— While with flaws for sure, this show stands out as one the most enjoyable anime I’ve watched in a long time. For sure, it doesn’t balance comedy with the story but it is a show that is set out be purely an absurd experience and achieves that quite well. Comedy IS subjective but for people who love fast-paced, crude and zany humor, Asobi Asobase is a must watch. Story/Comedy=9 Animation=7.5 Sound=7 Characters=7.5 Enjoyment=8.5 OVERALL= 8/10

I suppose you are reading this beacause you havent seen this anime till now there will be no spoilers and actually there is nothing to spoil about this anime because every single episode of this series is just comedy. There are 3 girls who are each wierd in their own way and this makes the show interesting, by the way this show is a seinen that means its made for girls but boys can enjoy it too because i did idk about you. there are some moments you can feel a little cringe but believe me this show can cure depression this show is just like Grand Blue but with girls. I dont have any other thing to say but watch it for complete entertainment after you watch a depressed show like Attack on Titan lol. This is my first ever review btw so if i made you feel bored you i am sorry

BELIEVE ME, WATCH PLASTIC NEESAN INSTEAD!!! Story: 3/10 Well, there isn't any story, which is normal. It is as it should be, in every episode happening something new that doesn't have any connection with the previous one, or the next one. It's main goal is to be funny, and it fails. Characters: 2/10 I will talk first about Kasumi Nomura, a girl who dislike playing games (due to her sister for making her doing tasks as punishment after losing) and likes reading or even create stories about gay people. The second is Hanako Honda, a stupid rich girl who want a boyfriend and to have boobs. The third is Olivia, a girl whose armpits smell, and pretend to speak english, but she can't. Our three main characters lack personality. I describe them in one sentence and two words some of them being "hilarious" and that's it, that's the joke, we must laugh. Overall: 3/10 I don't think you should put yourself into this painful and boring ride, by finishing this anime and lose 5 hours by watching literally nothing. If you really want, just one episode it's enough. After you see how empty and bad humour this anime have, you will most likely don't want to continue. It wouldn't get better. As i said, watch instead Plastic Neesan, it is 10 times better, you will laugh 10 times more and in only 24 minutes you finished it.

Asobi Asobase "Bizarre" describes this title quite aptly. The plot is about the 3 girls who want to start a party people circle together. Their entire dayli life is completely twisted and disturbing. The mangaka clearly used the power of nonsensical humor. The jokes are often stupid, flat or just crazy. However, this gets all the crazier, but the exaggerated representation of the scenes and their faces. The joke was there. However, the level hardly rose. In other words, there were one or two good gags. In the overall package, most of the episodes ended up rather empty. - For my part, I like this wacky and stupid kind of humor. This type just offers a pleasant change. But the episodes clearly lacked creativity. There were really jokes with the "WTF" effect. But only to a limited extent. Genre: Basically everything represented. Except for the part with drama. The exaggerated drama in the series was actually just another aspect of the "comedy" part. Therefore, this is one and the same. Animation / pictures: Interesting style of animation. The characters' faces were strangely flat, but was that part of the ... drawing style? In any case, the colorful animation and the visual representation were a big plus. Characters: The characters are in line with the concept, very bizarre. A shy girl, an extremely excited and the "normal blonde" with a slightly spicy smell. There was nothing worth mentioning here. Music: Intro extremely misleading, unless you inquired beforehand what the work is about. Pretty good trap, I like it. Musically in the norm. Besides that, Outro as well as Osts was satisfactory. Conclusion An amusing comedy title for in between, with an enormous hint of bizarre humor. However, some episodes are enormously weaker than others. The quality of the jokes also fluctuates enormously. Still worth seeing.

If you are looking for random comedy with schoolgirls you should see it!!!! Asobi Asobase turns everyday situations in the school into absurd situations very funny although it may seem like a strange humor to someone. We will see how the three protagonists who try to keep an useless club with the appearance of many weird characters throughout history, some characters with unique personalities even those of the bunch get a laugh and leave a good impression. With a pleasant Opening and an epic Ending. A simple animation, decent and funny according to the expressions and personality of the characters.

This show is definitely on crack, but it's good crack. Grade A crack. And I find it hilarious. There isn't much to describe in way of plot. Plot=shenigans. But the girls' personalities are distinct and they bounce off one another really well. Everyone has their own little quirks that contribute to making the comedy consistent and make sure those gut-wrenching laughs keep coming. Honestly, the first episode is a great indicator of what to expect. Watch it, and if it isn't your thing, rest assure that the show isn't for you. However, if it had you grinning like a madman, just know you're in for a treat.

So, this has been sitting on my wacthlist for a long time and I finally decided to give it a go. I didn’t go into Asobi Asobase expecting much, but boy, I ended up laughing way more than I thought I would. This anime is straight up chaotic, and that’s what makes it so funny. The humor is loud, random, and completely unhinged at times. It starts off feeling like a normal slice of life, then quickly turns into absolute madness, but in the best way possible. The main trio have great chemistry, and each girl brings her own kind of crazy. The facial expressions alone had me dying, and the voice acting really makes the jokes more hilarious, especially during the over- the-top moments. It’s one of those shows where even the smallest reactions can have you rolling lmao What I liked most is that it doesn’t rely on romance or fanservice. It’s just pure comedy, awkward situations, and dumbness and it fully commits to it. Some jokes land better than others, but overall the pacing is good and it keeps things really entertaining. If you’re looking for something light, silly, and genuinely funny, this is a great watch. It’s not deep or emotional...it knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be anything else. And that's why I love it!

Asobi Asobase: A Hilarious Gem Story and Characters: Asobi Asobase shines with its unique and unpredictable humor. The story follows three girls—Hanako Honda, Olivia, and Kasumi Nomura—who form a Pastimers Club, engaging in bizarre and hilarious antics. Each character brings something special: Hanako's extreme reactions, Olivia's faux foreigner persona, and Kasumi's deadpan delivery and fear of men. Their interactions are the heart of the show, creating a perfect blend of chaos and comedy. Visuals and Animation: The animation is top-notch, especially in capturing the exaggerated facial expressions that enhance the comedic effect. The character designs are charming and distinctive, with a remarkable range of visual gags. The quality of the animation stays consistently high, contributing to the overall enjoyment. Music and Sound: The soundtrack complements the show perfectly, with its quirky and upbeat tunes. The opening theme, "Three-Piece," is catchy and sets the tone for the wild ride that follows. The voice acting is stellar, with each actor bringing out the eccentricities of their characters, adding to the humor and absurdity. Writing and Direction: The writing is sharp and full of surprises, constantly subverting expectations. The show's episodic nature allows for a wide range of scenarios, each funnier than the last. The direction is spot-on, timing jokes perfectly and maintaining a fast-paced, energetic flow that keeps viewers engaged. Impact and Legacy: While Asobi Asobase may not be as widely known as some other comedies, it has garnered a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim for its unique brand of humor. Its ability to push the boundaries of conventional schoolgirl anime while delivering consistent laughs makes it a standout in the genre. Asobi Asobase is a 9/10 anime due to its exceptional humor, strong character dynamics, and high-quality animation. It's a must-watch for anyone looking for a comedy that is as smart as it is outrageous.

I found out about it from meme videos that caught my attention. The sound and facial expression seemed interesting to me so I decided to give it a try and see what it's about and oh boy, I did not expect it to be so funny, some moments are so stupid and childish (in a good way), I think I laughed every episode. This anime is good to watch when you don't want anything serious and complicated stuff. Simply just to relax, almost like watching short cartoons on TV. I can't name one other anime where it genuinely was fun to watch. I think one anime that's similar to this one would be Nichijou. If you like Nichijou then you should definitely watch Asobi Asobase. I wish there was more because I really enjoyed every episode. I recommend watching it at least once.
KyriosM
This anime might look like your typical girl anime but it's not, this is the girl version of the anime Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou but with middle school girls. This reminiscent of the nostalgic memories of your school days which have your funny memories of it. The story is not complex, the three main characters Olivia, Honda, and Kasumi who met in an uncircumstantial way formed a club called the Pastime Club. They're a peculiar trio each with their own traits and gains, we see a number of other characters too who come into the lives of these three main characters. The story comprises several sketches of different scenarios that take place around the main characters and their Club. There isn't a minute where these sketches are not funny, we see their daily lives in a most hysterical way. The sketches were damn funny, it wasn't forced and the atmosphere had a great comedic presence. The voice acting deserves high praise those were some of the best, opening and closing music are lovely and mental respectively, the directing was great. Really loved this.

Don't be fooled by the intro! This is not what you expect and it's freaking amazing lol.... it's one of the funnier anime I've watched. I usually don't laugh out loud when I watch anime but dude this one got me pretty good. It's one of the few anime that I actually ended up laughing a lot. Hinamatsuri and Love is War, Grand Blue, some of Clannad, Angel beats, they were the others. Anyways, this is one of those funny anime that if you like it, you'll end up loving it. I was skeptical at first when I started it. The first like 5 minutes of it, I didn't get it and didn't really enjoy it but by the end of episode 1, I was like I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I finished it right away and it was freaking gold. It's watching three girl with their crazy friendship that flip flops from friends to enemies, it's freaking hilarious. I have not seen this much betrayal since watching Grand Blue lol... the amount of betrayal in here could easily be a whole top 10 betrayal on it's own and I love it. The animation is a acquire taste and might not be for everyone but I think it's unique. It goes from cute, light heart, to dark and creepy lol... it's crazy... the voice acting was really on point too. I think the other two girl voice actor are underrated and off course we have Kana, so we already know she's amazing lol Apart from all this, the overall character is awesome and what really carried this show. Plot is just whatever random stuff they do lol... it's cute... it's funny, it's hecka random lol... but it's freaking awesome

This is a pretty enjoyable show. It starts out reminiscent of the likes of Nichijou, but gets very weird very fast. It has several moments that made me ask myself "can this be considered fetish hentai bait?" (think: the farts thing, the spanking thing, anything other that raises the eyebrows of someone who's spent any time on questionable forums) and some pretty cringeworthy moments, but it is quite clever and funny, and had me laughing out loud often. I was absolutely in stitches at Maeda's antics at times and most minor characters are hilarious (see: Fujiwara). I like the bouts of self-awareness, too. Overall, a rare breed of genuinely funny comedy anime.

Stuzfin Review #2: A pleasant surprise Asobi Asobase is akin to one of those loot boxes. You never know what you're gonna get inside, and they can even get pretty ridiculous. But most importantly, they're really fun to open. I went into this series with no prior knowledge. I just stumbled into it by chance. And let me tell you, I'm sure glad that I did. My likes: The cast of characters is actually very small for once, but each character stands out & manages to get me laughing more times than not. It doesn't need to rely on fanservice to get you invested, the gags do that just fine. You can tell that a lot of effort went into the animation, voice acting and soundtrack. I love that they intentionally used a misleading OP too. My dislikes: The baby character at the end of the series was honestly disturbing. Also, the series ended so abruptly, I feel like I haven't gotten closure yet. That said, there isn't actually a proper story or plot, so the ending doesn't really matter. Conclusion: I found Asobi Asobase to be a pleasant surprise. Went in thinking it was a Moe anime. Turns out it was roller coaster of gags. Thanks for reading.

Honestly, I've rarely "connected" with Japan's sense of humour. There are rare times wherein an anime will get me laughing but it is very rare — if it does, it will only happen a couple of times (enough to count on one hand). But THIS anime had me laughing in almost every episode! It's simply amazing, and I guess apart from the witty punchlines, the voice actors for the characters were just incredible! Their voices fit the characters and the way they react to situations are just so fitting. Everything flowed so naturally that it was easy to get in line with the humor, laugh and be surprised. I hope I discovered this anime sooner! I would highly recommend watching this!

This anime might be an ordinary, slice, of life anime, but don't judge the book by it's cover, as this is Asobi Asobase. To simply define who are the MCs of Asobi Asobase is. Imagine Kyoto Animation's Nichijou characters. Nichijou is composed of 3 main characters — Yuuko, the brown hair, Mio, blue hair and Mai, black hair with glasses — and they had somewhat simpler yet bizarre life surrounding them. But here on Asobi Asobase, they also has three MCs, except that Yuuko's hair is black and her personality is much more wilder than the former. While Mio is a fake-american foreign student which is her hair is blonde and has apocrine sweat glands. And Mai, who retains her black hair and glasses, and she has a pair of busty-sized breasts, and much more sadistic. And their life can be simpler at first, except that life sniffed two-pounds of coke on the following episodes and punch the ever-living s*** out of forth-wall, pour gasoline on it's corpse, pee on it, c**p on it and burn it. That's Asobi Asobase, a very surreal comedy-anime that is so trashy and surreal, yet in a very great way. Story: The story here is almost non-existent as they focuses more on the slapstick humor on their daily high school routine and filled with tons and tons of real-life references around the pop-culture media. Also, the forth-wall in this anime has beaten to a pulp that you didn't even thought that you are also sometimes involved in this one. Like, of course, they are entertaining you as the audience, but the MCs felt that it's kinda bad that you're left out of their fun so they want you to join their epic craziness and misadventures. And, to be honest, I'm truly flattered and laughing at the same time watching this anime as it felt like you're in the same room as them. This anime truly is a one-of-a-kind anime that let us interact them, while you are enjoying the anime at the same time. Good job to the writers and the director to this one. I haven't laugh so hard in years until I met this anime! Art: But what is truly the most stand-out point in Asobi Asobase is how they animate it. The art is somewhat fair if this is just an ordinary slice-of-life anime. But what truly makes me laugh at the edge of my seat is the unexpected and exaggerated facial expressions shown by the characters. Like, they might be innocent or calm at first, but when something's happened during that scene, a funny facial expression suddenly pops-up from the screen, realizing how they will either solve their current situation, how they react to what the other said to them, etc.. It is comedic-art at it's finest and I'm happy that they make used their art quite absolutely well for sake of comedy. Sound: Ho ho... Where should I start from this one. Okay, at the very first episode of watching this. I already knew this was coming when they introduce the opening theme for this one — a calm and melancholic opening as the three main characters sing in full-bloom during a summer breeze set mostly in a garden and ends lying behing the wall, smiling with their eyes closed. Nothing's bad is going to happen, right? HAHAHA... Ohh, you'll see. Then, the anime pops up and, BAM! When the comedy strikes, the US National anthem can be heard behind, another US Anthem, but in a flute rendition, and when serious s*** is about to happen, a heavy-metal song encapsulates the whole situation within them. These and a lot more on the OST of Asobi Asobase. The sound score performed here is truly remarkable as well. Also, the seryuus performing their role as the characters here are very engaging too. But what's interesting is the minor character, Fujiwara, who is Hanako, Olivia and Kazumi's classmate who is LEGIT fluent in English... I mean, it is performed by a Japanese VA, but a whole lot better. Yeah, she can speak both english and japanese, but mixed-together. She's very funny too. But what is also the funniest one is the seryuu for Hanako, one of the MCs of this anime series, as she changes from her normal tone, to cute tone for some of the situations, and mostly, a deeper tone for most of the episodes. Also, did I ever mention you that the Ending song is truly an unexpected one? Like holy sh** it's a freaking banger! Just listen to the ED song if you haven't watch it. Babymetal or even K-On! is shookt on Asobi Asobase's Inkya Impulse. Characters: Now, the character development here is non-existent. And is even that a matter? I mean, at least the comedy is given a lot of dedication on this one. So let this be passed. But the characters performed here is seriously well-done and well-written. The roles are fantastic, I should say and that is all there is too it. Overall: Man, I LOVE Asobi Asobase. From the misleading Opening title to the Hellish rise of the Ending theme. I can't say how grateful that I've witness this one-of-a-kind anime. It may not given the 100 rank here on MAL for their comedic performances, but I'll give it a higher score for making me burst my laughter in all of it's episodes while almost getting my stomach hurt. It's a super-surreal anime filled with tons of references from Detective Conan to even Harry FRICKIN' Potter! And the 4th-wall beating extraveganza is hilarious. If you haven't watch it, then what are you waiting for?! Go and watch it! Hell, if Muse Asia's YouTube Channel is available in your country — as they are the only legal site for watching animes for free, then go! Or watch it in other anime sites. You don't want to miss the silliness, and wackiness of this series. And hell, when they teased the Season 2 of this anime (without confirming it) with a Star Wars poster. That was truly a tongue-and-cheek move there, but, I'll be looking forward to have it and watch it. My final verdict for this anime is a solid and deserving, 10/10! A comedic platinum!

When I started watching this I had no clue what to expect! I saw a cute opening and some middle school girls doing typical things but things quickly changed. Asobi Asobase is the type of anime that you never fully understand but can definitely enjoy. I enjoy the amazing voice acting from the girls and the way the way their expressions are drawn. Its a lively show with lively characters that will reel you in with pure dumb comedy. There is no real story to it just a typical everyday (not for most people) scenarios that has the girls doing things for their club. The art was simple but felt like a snapchat filter was placed over it. (lol) Opening was alright. The ending is... well different. I love it and is my favorite ending. Voice acting as stated before was really good and it also ties in with the endning song. Characters were great each very different in their own right but all very enjoyable even the minor characters. I really enjoyed the show and recommend it if you need something short to watch and need some comedy in your life.
