Asobi Asobase: Workshop of Fun

Comedy is subjective and may be the most personal form of media. Most of the comedy in Asobi Asobase is based on reaction faces, characters screaming uncontrollably/going insane and misunderstandings that rapidly spiral out of control. There are also a surprising amount of vulgar/sexual jokes, considering it's a show about 14-year-olds. There's a bit of slapstick humor and dark humor thrown in too, but if what I just described doesn't sound entertaining to you you will probably not enjoy this show. The character Hanako, and her VA are what carry this show. Hanako is continuously performing mandrake-screams, over-reacting to things, and generally going insane/berserk. The energy her character brings to scenes is incredible. There is nothing subtle about it, and I loved it. The rest of the characters are also good, including some very entertaining side-characters. The characters are all very distinguishable from each-other personality-wise but are not especially deep. They're not precisely one-note, but if you're looking character development, there isn't much. Additionally, this show does not have a plot. There is continuity, and there are several subplots, but there is no overarching story that is being told. I don't know if this holds the show back, but because there is no story, the ending feels very sudden. This show also does a good job of not wearing out its jokes. Every episode feels fresh, and when jokes do get reused they are not done in the exact same situation. One thing I appreciated is that the characters feel like they have the maturity of 14-year-olds. Typically anime depicts students as having the same level of maturity as adults, not so here. The opening/ending as a pair are extremely funny even just by themselves. The animation is excellent and helps convey the energy of the characters. The sound is also good. I don't think Asobi Asobase is a masterpiece but it is extremely entertaining.

Asobi Asobase does to CGDCT what Madoka did to magical girl anime. Each episode lulls you in with the dreamlike OP before you dive headfirst into the madness and chaos that is Asobi Asobase. Story: 5/10 The story begins with one girl mistaking another for an American born student and seeks out her help to learn English, this causes them to create a club based around common passtimes such as games children play. These games usually lead to one girl inadvertently offending another and antics ensue. Art: 10/10 CGDCT has a history of trying to be as moe as possible to garner as much appeal as possible. Asobi Asobase in its deconstruction of the genre decides to take this in an entirely different direction, first beginning with semi realistic approximations for characters and then making the characters as ugly as possible in a variety of art styles and reaction shots that rival the inhuman distortions of Junji Ito. Sound: 10/10 The VAs for Asobi Asobase do an amazing job whether they're having conversation or shrieking for their lives to be spared from the wrath of an angry middle schooler. This contrast is mirrored with the lullaby-like OP and the disorder of the ED. Character's voices and tones are often shifted on a dime and distorted to further this contrast to extreme levels. Character: 8/10 The characters are all chaotic neutral in that they put themselves and their own needs first. This helps the constant motion and consistent tone across the series as the students find themselves betraying one another constantly. This isn't without the asides and presence of the colorful supporting cast which add another layer of absurdity to Asobi Asobase. Enjoyment: 8/10 Overall: 8/10 Asobi Asobase is a fun time and although the gimmick of mashing CGDCT premise with horror genre sound/visuals and the continuous deconstruction of the genre is entertaining, after 4 or 5 episodes this novelty will have worn off and you will again need to rely on the characters to drive the series like any other CGDCT series. I feel this is where Asobi Asobase lacks, but I still recommend it for any fan of CGDCT that wants to see how far the limits can be pushed the other way.

its good at being what ists supposed to be. probably the only anime ive watched that made me laugh out loud. getting to it, the art style is splendid, although it would do good to tone the contrast up just a little bit, although it sits well with the comedy atmosphere. the sounds are absolutely insane. the background music actually fills and fits in, its doesnt stand out too much, but it noticeably enhances the quality of the anime, it thickens the feel, makes it richer to experience. you start the anime with the typical shoujo anime SoL themes, but then you go to heavy metal in the end, i loved it XD the characters are distinct and likeable, each character is fleshed out, although being only 12 episodes long. every character has a charm, and there hasnt been one character who i felt was a waste of space. even the backstories are gold XD absolutely worth it.

Asobi Asobase is a greatfully amnd enjoyment serie. I recommend it. It has passed a lot of time that I laught watching an anime, I had just laught with Konosuba. Now, I have seen Asobi Asobase, and it is incredible. The characters is a point that i like so much, Their internal structure (Emotion, behavior, thoughts, etc) has lots of points that play with the history, and contruct it. In fact, a lot of jokes are watch what is the reaction of the girls when something weird happen. I can see them as a realistic personality. Their are not always sad, or are not always screaming, is only a part of their personality, as same as everyone has their parts. The art is a important factor. The serie use many times the wierd faces, the exagerate facial expressions, the colors. With this manner of art, the serie make the "common situations", add the personality, and the differents ways of drawing the scene, to change the normal to something funny. I recommend the serie. If you want to pass a good time laughing, Asobi Asobase is for you.

(This review is spoilerless.) Asobi Asobase is a very interesting serie for me in Summer 2018 but at the same time, can be one of the most obnoxious comedy serie around 2-3 years too. I know that comedy is very subjective and different people have different tastes. As you know, there are large amount of comedy anime in the market nowadays and what I am going to show you is how Asobi Asobase in short running viewing experiences, is very amazing in its own way of social humorous and references creativity and adaptation but at the same time, in long running viewing experiences, Asobi Asobase can be a very boring and irritating serie as its presentation only rely on the same style of overreaction and exaggeration of both plots and characters. First, let me show you the good things that happen in Asobi Asobase which make me want to recommend this serie for you to watch. I like the designs, relations and dynamic developments and progressions of the main cast which are Olivia, Hanako and Kasumi so much. Actually, I can proudly to say that I only watch this serie in some episode only to watch these three doing something ridiculous and idiotic like normal friends do. (In some serie, friendship buildings and executions are very weirdly beautiful and feeling so forced. They always say nice things to each others and never think in the bad way. They trust each other so much that they can even be lovers which want me cringe sometime.) These three show us how dynamical and along side the serie they have some progressions and developments since the very start. Olivia is a girl who want to be recognize by her very nature of normal girl, not a foreigner people which everyone always feel uncomfortable. Hanako is a kind of wanna be girl who like to have friend but cannot doing that as she is too bland, idiotic and innocent that other girls don't accept these nature of her except Olivia and Hanako. Kasumi is an awkward girl who can't be herself when facing others people but when she is with Olivia and Hanako, she can be herself who like to do something stupid and relaxing most of the time. Everyone have their own role and attribute as Olivia is a straight man who seem like the most normal while the other two Hanako is a main ridiculous and joke character and Kasumi support these ridiculousness and jokes from Hanako afterword. These might be shallow perspective of why this serie is interesting and good to watch. Now let's discuss the main key point that make Asobi Asobase both good and bad at the same time. For its presentation, Asobi Asobase still has to beware one important thing about the style of using “over-action” and “visualization changing” jokes repeatedly along out the entire serie which can be one of the most boring and unfunny thing for some viewers even though those style of presentations changed and developed with more creativity and uniqueness over the time. This serie can be pretty easy to predict on how the jokes and plots will be executed and even nearly guessed the ending resolutions in the next scenes most of the time if viewers who seen or notice the same style of presentations from the other series before hands. Also these jokes and style of scene executions were overused a lot that even the viewer who love to continue to watch the serie can get a bit boring and feeling cheesy too. A lot of viewers decide to drop this serie so fast after seeing these kind of repeated presentations. After the circumstances of the previous problems that can be happen for some viewers, this serie begins to use a lot of references in their stories and even play jokes more often after the middle part. (but I guess they have started these style of references using since the first part which kind of hard to notice as some references are so old or don’t have any linked or stories to begin with that make it kind of charming for the second watch) This circumstances of serie begin to imply the tactic of using references as main factor as they use them a lot and even have an important role for viewer to understand the joke can be very dangerous as for some viewers. They can not get any laugh from the serie or even feeling funny if they don’t get or understand the references at all. Even though, the ideas of telling story based on the randomness in girls’ school life are very new and creative in the field that most viewers have never seen before. (because all the school life comedy anime in the community right now are all the man-based viewing not in the girl-based much) But at the same time, they are like the double-edged sword where they can make viewers rather confused so easily about what currently happened in each scenes and plots. Also they make scenes and jokes from the previous to the next scenes that should have some continuity loss their tones and stories that can potentially make the story more engaging and interesting in the long running as viewers have something to get invested in. Personally, the randomness will not bug me so much if the serie has some kind of good direction which now let's talk the thing that make me feel uncomfortable the most during the viewing experiences of Asobi Asobase, Pacing. To be completely honest, even though fast pace direction of this serie can (kind of) build up a very well comedic atmosphere and ridicule nature of the serie as every scenes, tones and dialogues feel enthusiastic and look natural from the surface, but it can also be utterly annoying and irritating as hell. Most of the time, if not because of the built up based original stories, plots and dialogues, everything look so extremely force and corny as they look so out of place sometime. The direction of Asobi Asobase cut, swap or even make some built up tones of each scenes loose their momentum. There are too many things cramped in the same scenes which keep changing their attributes all the time. Making it even worse for the viewer to even try to figure out what is actual happened. It will hurt your brain so much and will make you feel a lot of confusion sometime. And that is all my opinion about Asobi Asobase. This is a good serie for the time killing. Even though I point too many bad things in this review but Asobi Asobase still be a very charming serie to watch for more understanding in second and third times. You should give this serie a try. It might not be as bad as I say. The final score is 7/10.

By far one of the funnies anime I have seen. I always search for new comedy animes, I have seen Nichijou,Danshi Koukousei, Sakamoto desu ka,Arakawa Under the bridge, Minami Ke, and lots of slice of life anime and Asobi Asobase is the funniest of them all, I guarantee you get a smile or big laugh every minute of this show. Because of this anime I also had started to like the way they drew the eyelashes of the three characters where I have first seen on Flemmy Speedraw(rokka no yuusha). Despite the flaws of the three girls, i have fallen inlove with their personalities .

Nichijou if all the main characters were horrible people. My anime of the season, maybe the year. This absurd comedy throws everything at you and none of it makes sense. For every normal Slice of life, shoujo manga trope they throw a curve ball, or maybe just eat the ball. The characters break out of their moe molds every few minutes and it's Hanako who takes the cake for me. Her absurd over-reactions and nonsense jumps to conclusion make this the most hilarious comedy anime in a long time. Hurricane laugh scale: Category 5 non stop gags and wtf moments are guaranteed to destroy your sides and bring floods of tears. Catastrophic damage to your image of cute high school girls.

*Disclaimer* Just personal scratch. Advised, possible spoilers. Opinion & Informal Art: 7/10 It was good and felt like it had its own style. Anatomy and proportions checked out. The weird faces were pretty funny and they added a lot to the atmosphere as well as to the comedy. It didn't seem like they were relied on too much which is also a plus. The art was clean and was detailed at times. Nothing to complain about but I didn't feel like there was anything to praise either. The art was just good in general but wasn't impressive for the most part. Animation: 6/10 Clean. No shortcuts that seemed out of place and everything seemed quite well done. The special effects and impact scenes were nice to look at. It wasn't over the top. The fast animation wasn't too much above average. Most of the movements were simple and didn't have much complexity so everything was pretty mellow. Characters: 7/10 The characters were well done. They were the highlight of this show. The trio of girls in the Past-timers Club really made the comedy work. No one individual of the trio was overbearing and didn't steal the show. The dynamics between the characters and the amount of impact they individually made was balanced and felt natural. The character development was interesting too. The backstories and relations were quirky and each of the characters had their own flavor. In other words, not one character felt too bland and they each had enough life to them to make the comedy work. Plot: 5/10 About average in terms of setup and premise. It's just a cute girls doing cute things show. The spice was the comedy and that spice is what sets this apart from other similar shows. I could see myself recommending this show if I were asked for a comedy recommendation. Development: 6/10 Like the plot, there wasn't anything really outstanding about the development. It was a comedy done by cute girls. There wasn't some crazy world-changing development or anything like that. It was just 12 episodes of comedy. I liked it. Music: 7/10 The OP and ED were clever but not new. I liked the contrasting image both OP and ED create for this show to someone who may have no clue what this show's about. The bgm was fitting enough but wasn't too memorable. There wasn't any real sound design. Conclusion: 6/10 Felt a bit weak and abrupt. It decided to conclude the show just as is, as-is the specific skit end. There wasn't a whole conclusion sequence. The conclusion was just like an abrupt end to a YouTube video. Somewhat fitting, somewhat weak. I don't have much to praise or complain about. Overall: 7/10 This was good. I liked this enough to have this come to mind when recommending a comedy to someone so that's a win.

Let me first start by saying: The plot isn’t exactly deep and the characters aren’t the most complex, but that’s not what I look for in a comedy. The comedic aspects are the most important in judging this genre and this show blows it out of the water. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve laughed my ass off watching this, which isn’t a easy feat considering how critical and cynical I’ve become watching anime over the years. Plot: 5 The story is a surrealistic, slice of life comedy series centering around 3 high school girls where they hang out and play different activities, hence their club named the Past-timers club. What’s most important in this show is our MC trio- Hanako, Oliva & Katsumi. It’s here where we see them in all these different, surrealistic situations and see how they deal with it in a light hearted, comedic way. The comedy timing, goofy facial expressions and dialogue are amazing and well executed. It never feels like the show is repeating the same joke at times like Grand Blue (which is one of the few flaws I have with that series). Characters: 7 The characters are fun, likeable, diverse, have interesting little traits and gags that the writer plays on at times, but never gets boring. I love all three girls equally and the chemistry they have together. Some of side characters I like are the student president, Hanako’s butler and Olivia’s otaku brother. Sounds: 9 The opening is amazing. The visuals and the lighthearted, fun soundtrack capture well what this series is supposed to be about. The osts are really great and I like the rock ending with the sketchy visuals too Animation: 7 The animation is good for the most part. I don’t really have anything else to say about it xD Overall: 8 In terms of enjoyment, I would rate this as 10/10 comedy gold. Asobi Asobase is one of those anime I would recommend to anyone who just wants to relax and have a good laugh. In terms of comedy alone, Asobi Asobase isn’t just the best comedy anime this season, but overall one of the best I’ve seen in anime.

Don't let the opening fool you when you watch this for the first time, this anime ain't your moe moe type of anime, which what I was expecting at first. This I think is the female version of Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, they have very similar humor and type of comedy. If you want to get rid of your stress or you just prefer to watch a super hilarious comedy anime, then this show is perfect for you. I'm sure you won't regret watching this. And mind lowering your volume before it breaks your eardrum ;) Story - 7 The story is basically just an introduction of the three girls of how they created a club and what they usually do. It is an average story, but job well done for the creative ideas in each episode. Art - 8 Very average, but those faces their making is sooo hilarious, especially the baby's face in the last episode. THAT SHIT KILLED ME. Music - 8 Opening and Ending are so different from each other but I like them both. Screaming in every episode is so so so good, have never watched an anime like it before. The chosen voice actresses fits the anime perfectly. Character - 9 The main characters are exceptionally hilarious and the supporting characters did great as well. WELL DONE!! Enjoyment - 10 Really enjoyed every episode and was anticipated every week for the next episode. There was no episode that I didn't enjoy and there is nothing to hate or dislike in this anime. Overall - 8.4 I wasn't expecting this to be so good. I gave it 3-4 episodes before deciding to continue or not but found myself watching it every week. I definitely recommend you watching this.

"Sorekara do Shitano" Good in-your-face humor, hilarious facial expressions, and impressive voice actors. Asobi Asobase is that one underdog comedy gem that will eventually get popular to the point where it'll reach god status. Or, I hope at least. The anime is basically a bunch of stories jumbled together with its juxtaposing palette colors that glitters cutesy and moe. A slapstick comedy that attempts to make you laugh from the outrageous actions of Middle School girls. Not everyone will appreciate its humor, not everyone will like this type of show. However, with what it's trying to offer to fans of comedy, I can confidently say that it exceeds my expectations. The characters are lovable and amusing, with their interactions being even more so. There are a lot of memorable moments that will definitely appear in "Top 10 Funny Anime Moments" videos on YouTube. The animated faces of Hanako are ridiculous and hilarious. She's definitely in the spotlight, but that's not to say everyone else is subpar. The other two main characters are equally lovable and funny. The theme songs are addicting. The Opening is a huge lie but still a calming listen. The Ending is very Rock and Metal, and it's awesome. The animation provides a contrasting effect, yet still manages to compliment the scenarios and gags. Asobi Asobase is a lovely gem. It deserves way more love. Much of its greatness stems from its comedic theme, and it perfects it well. It's not complex nor is it deep. It doesn't try so hard. It stays within its realm. It's basically a good, fun 12 episode series. That's enough for me.

The anime starts out with a very heartfelt opening song. You find yourself saying "Okay were we go another anime about cute girls doing cute things." And here I sit getting strapped in for a nice comfy ride. Then the episode starts and shit basically hits the fan. An intense game of rock paper scissors with an end result of one of our main characters getting her breasts slapped and the other one getting a set of fingers jammed up her nose. "What the hell am I even watching?! this is hilarious!" I found myself saying after the first 5 minutes of Asobi Asobase. The story is a simple one about girls just trying to have a fun time while in school. In the beginning they focus on a lot of past-timers games but as the anime goes along it just becomes an anime about these girls being involved in different situations. Lerche did a really good job with the animation. It felt different from anime I usually watch. The art seemed 'sketchy" but in a good way, like the character designs were not smooth but I liked it. it was different. The opening like I said was very upbeat and enjoyable. The ending is going to be up for ending of the YEAR. yes ending of the year, this is one of the best endings I have heard in an anime in quite sometime. The heavy metal went perfectly with how this anime was overall. Straight crazy. The characters were seriously flawless. I mean they each had their flaws in the show but to me the viewer I found nothing wrong with any of them. they each had their own charm and I enjoyed them all The anime was really enjoyable. I looked forward to it every week because it started my week off right with a huge smile on my face. This is one of if not THE BEST ANIME OF THE SEASON for the Summer 2018 season. I cannot recommend this anime more to anyone just looking for comedy that will keep you laughing constantly throughout this series. I cant wait for the bluray to be released. Any anime fan should have this show on their shelves.

I came across Asobi Asobase through TikTok, where it was recommended as a slice-of-life comedy anime. I was curious and gave it a try since I usually enjoy shows that are light and funny. After finishing it, I’d say it’s… okay. Not great, not terrible—just somewhere in between. Honestly, I didn’t find it that funny. The humor felt a bit forced, and most of the jokes relied too much on exaggerated facial expressions and over-the-top reactions. At first, it was amusing, but it quickly felt repetitive. Instead of laughing, I often found myself just watching in silence, waiting for something to land. Another reason it didn’t fully click with me is the lack of a clear plot. I thought there would be some kind of story or at least some meaningful character growth, but it felt like a series of skits without much direction. Still, I understand that’s the style they were going for. That said, I did enjoy some episodes. There were a few moments that caught me off guard and made me smile or laugh a little. The animation was expressive, the energy of the characters was fun, and the overall vibe wasn’t bad—it just didn’t match my sense of humor. I’m giving it a 5/10 not because it was terrible, but because it had potential and had parts I liked. It wasn’t funny for me, but I can see why others enjoy it. I’d say Asobi Asobase is a decent comedy anime—it’s just not the kind of humor I personally enjoy.

I originally rated this a 9/10, but over time I've actually come to appreciate it even more. I'm not big into school life anime. I've been watching anime for over two decades now, so I've seen the setting so often that it's mostly worn out its welcome for me. I'm also a bit of a comedy snob in that I don't like a lot of comedy that makes its way into mainstream media (although that seems to be less and less these days), but the comedy that I do end up enjoying usually becomes some of my favorite stuff of all time. So it should be considered no small praise when I say that Asobi Asobase has left a lasting, positive impression on me. It truly is more than the sum of its parts. Almost lightning in the bottle. The art, voice acting, tone, comedic timing, and music work together in such a way that I probably wouldn't be able to rate it as highly if any one of those things fell short. There is no real plot to speak of, so for one looking for a narrative to follow or complex character development this might be disappointing, but these aren't things we typically expect of comedy anyhow. What really sets Asobi Asobase apart is its genuineness. Sometimes it's easy to forget these are fictional characters. It presents a view of the life of Japanese school girls that we don't often see: one where the cast is as awkward, unsure, and inadequate as most of us probably were in high school. None of the three main characters are academic geniuses or particularly athletic. They're just normal people (who happen to be exceedingly funny) hanging out and trying to have a fun time. The authenticity and passion of the creators seeps through. I said at first I'm not into school life anime, but I think the most important thing is this: any story can be interesting if you tell it in an interesting way. Nichijou and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou have both proven that in the past, and I'd gladly place Asobi Asobase alongside those two series.

One of the funniest animes around, shame it didn't get a second season. The humor of the show lands every time, especially in comparison with other shows of the same genre; this is because they build on jokes in a dumb and funny way, taking the most random and stupid things and building on them to enhance other jokes, like Maeda's butt laser. And even if the humor isn't the cup of tea of everyone, the cast in itself is pretty charming and really fleshed out, making you miss them by the time the short 12 episodes go by. Not only that, the animation is great and really creative, taking full advantage of the medium of animation and complementing and enhancing the antics the trio of girls get themselves into as they pass the time in their club. I would absolutely recommend.

This anime is pretty much a CDCGT anime but remove the 2nd C and the 1st C accordingly with plenty of unpredictable crude humor reminiscent of adult swim cartoons and you got Asobi Asobase. Asobi Asobase's main premise is just girls doing things to pass the time (hence the club name pastimers club), boring but what makes it great is how they do the activities to pass the time because even the activities itself are fairly innocent. The story is good, nothing too spectacular but the biggest strength is the characters way of delivering lines that sometimes make you concerned for their health with how over the top the screams are, the comedy in the anime are often off-color jokes that are often delivered by the main cast themselves but sometimes also the men in the show which is quite a choice since there's almost no male characters of the same age, fortunately the reactions of the girls are proportionate to what the older male characters would say so it wouldn't be too uncomfortable to laugh at. The art of the anime is pretty good, my only gripe is that it's too bright "oh you can just turn down your screen brightness silly!!" I do that and now it looks washed. The scenes at the night looks like it would hold up for 2024 but the day-time scenes are something to say the least. Overall the anime is quite fun to watch, the humor would probably put off many people (with good reason) and the voice work is the show's biggest strength for me that made the show from just okay to hilarious. I'm giving this one a 7.8/10, kinda reminds me of Smiling Friends but packaged into a cutesy Japanese school girls theme.

Asobi asobase is hilarious and has brought me so much joy. A gag anime through and through, it delivers exactly as it promises with interesting characters, quirky personalities, and solid gags. Basically 3 girls being stupid after school and the show manages to do so much with that. As always, humour is subjective, but asobi’s humour is a little reminiscent of nichijo, so fans of that may like this too. Art is also solid with the occasional sudden, drastic changes in art style done well to reinforce gags and make them absolutely hilarious. Overall, a solid gag anime which I would recommend any day.

I will never forget the day of January 29, 2023 (today), in which I randomly decided to watch an episode of Asobi Asobase despite it having nothing to do with any of my current projects or any of my short term goals, only because I remembered its name in my mind on accident. I ended up watching the entire thing in one go. Easily in the top 10 funniest anime of all time. All the voice performances were great but Hanako's voice actress steals the show. She made noises I did not even believe were humanly possible. It's been a while since I could just sit down for a 5-6 hours and just go through an entire one cour anime. Felt like high school all over again. May we all have many more of these days ahead of us.

This show is the funniest anime I have ever seen. The OP is what your expectations are at first glance of this anime, and the ending song is the reality. Both of which I jam SO HARD TO. The characters are all so hilarious in their own unique way. And the situations they are put into has made this the first and only anime I have laughed out loud too. I've pretty much accepted that I'm never going to find an anime as funny as this. I'm open to being proven wrong, but I've accepted that that likely won't happen. Now, excuse me while I go purchase 10,000 copies so that this work of art can be renewed for a second season, ciao

The best accident to have ever stumbled upon. I was randomly searching for a new SoL anime to watch. What I expected just from the title card on the CrunchyRoll anime page was something normal and wholesome slice of life, but instead I received awkward greatness! I, like most people who have NOT read the manga, got totally jebaited by the thumbnail AND the OP. At first the art change caught me by surprise, and I honestly didn't like it at first. But as I watched a bit longer, I found myself giggling like a little kid. This show will keep a smile on your face with its ridiculousness. People have described the anime as "Nichijou, but with no limits". I'd say that's a fair assessment. WATCH NOW! (Shoutsouts to Hina Kino)
