Honestly, I can't understand all this hatred towards this series. As a Cinema graduate, I was taught to look at things objectively. This series is no masterpiece and, as I haven't watched the original, I have no grounds to compare. The story is a bit confusing, so I don't know if the hatred stems from here. The story was very rushed - if I take into consideration the comments of those who watched the original. The script could've been better elaborated so that the story would’ve had a better flow - maintaining the interest and suspense. It's really entertaining as a whole if you watch knowing what to expect. The story has a lot of elements which make it interesting (though confusing). Still, it’s a good way to pass your time if you do not expect much. The action scenes are well made, and the art is fairly decent. The characters are quite captivating as well! I enjoyed a lot since I did not expect much! The story has a lot of issues; still, I've seen many anime that had these kinds of issues (or worse), but did not receive all of this hatred - maybe because they had fanservice, ecchi and other cliched people love. In conclusion, I do not get people at all: I just think there are a lot of hypocrites and horny guys in here who can’t watch a fantasy without those elements mentioned above. Honestly, I've liked this more than that I-don't-know-what-that-fuck-it-is Code Geass (which people seem to love). I'm sorry, not sorry! Peace out! Story - 6 Art - 8 Sound - 6 Character - 6 Enjoyment - 8 Overall - 7

Being someone who's never watched the original 1998-1999 run of Orphen, I can definitely say that I wasn't missing out on anything much. But hearing that a soft reboot of this is greenlit for achieving monetary milestone sales of the LN (and coincidentally the 25th anniversary of the series), I decided to take a gamble on this new "refreshed" retake, but holy cow, more than making justice to the original run in the first few episodes (I'll give it that), this adaptation managed to be something worse, and not for the lack of trying. If you'd ask me what magical fantasy series stood out in the 90s, there was some of the action-adventure shows that easily had made their mark as classics like Slayers, the mediocre Bakuretsu Hunters, or even in the 2000s with shows like Kaze no Stigma. Those shows can be recommended in a heartbeat. But Orphen? That is only through word-of-mouth or by sheer coincidence that your TV cable service actually was showing anime that was brought over to the West when it got popular in the late 90s. And believe me, in writing this review I had to scour for information for people that knew the source material better than me, and from one source I can quote that: "Some things are give-or-take when comparing the 90s to this version, like the magic summoning (which is what the novels actually had that was justice, the "I summon thee, <insert element name>" part and such). The story itself is as standard fare as magical fantasies go, and telling the MC's story (in this case, Krylancelo/Orphen) and his relationship with the character cast, poised with the figure of being the best of the best and with the usual villainy stuff. Whilst the character effects are loosely inspired from Slayers, their weights on Orphen do vary from relation to relation, and honestly to me are nothing but a bunch of nuisances, as much as I want to get invested in them. They may aren't be in 1998, but definitely now in 2020. And of course, who else than getting Studio Deen for the job, because and with honesty, it's the studio where all the shitty works go when there is no future for the shows under their belt (only in rare cases like KonoSuba and the highly-rated production shows where they ACTUALLY excelled), and this show is no exception. And I'd get it, Studio Deen, par on their horrible record, has been around since the mid-80s, and for Orphen to accomplish the 90s style with modern animation, that does not mesh together in times such as now. "All style and no substance" is the only way I can brand this show. The OST is one to be laughable at. I mean for one, the original VA for Orphen, Shoutarou Morikubo is asked once again to recast his voice for the reboot whilst all the others are new VAs that are unlike Orphen's. And that pretty much removes close to naught with the nostalgia for people who'd watched the 90s version and thought that it was a nice and good show (bar the insane fillers of that). The OP I've gotta admit, it sounds and feels like a joke while trying to recapture the 90s cheesy opening's feel, but while it's average at best, it's definitely catchy and one of my guilty favourites. Can't quite say the same for Mai Fuchigami's ED, I don't know why but her song repertoire is beginning to feel like it's on a B/C-grade songlist that's to hear once and forget about it. More than trying to replicate the trend that is with Dororo last year in the realm of creating classic reboots that surpass the original, this show is an abject failure in all respect and to the people that enjoyed the 90s version, I'd say this is even worse than Orphen: Revenge, and even if you don't take my word for it, try this for yourself at your own risk. This isn't a show to reintroduce a franchise that's long gone from a classic era, but rather warrants people to try the original 24-episode run instead that's better in every way. In a nutshell, only attempt this if you have time on your hands to waste. Believe me, I've tried to look at this show positively and give it a chance, but it always threw the potential away.

I'm just writing this review to let you know not to waste your time watching this anime. Some other reviews weren't clear on that in my opinion. This anime seemed to have all the good ingredients, fantasy, drama, mystery but the final product is appalling. Characters are not only generic they are also thrown in the episodes with unknown powers and motivations. Even the main character has this problem, but when needed something "magic" will save the day. The fights are horrible as for some reason these become a narrative to tell about the powers and characters with flash backs and all. And the fast pace wit massive material compressed in a small quantity of episodes can not be used as an excuse. There are a plenty of flash backs to the previous episodes, plenty of precious minutes wasted. The art looks decent at first sight, but appearing/disappearing weapons/details totally ruins that too. And as there is nothing to work with music and voice acting cannot help. Conclusion, only watch this to know how not to make an anime.

So seeing all the hate for the anime and the really unfair score it has, I decided to write a review. Story: Orphen's story is set in a fantasy setting where our protagonist Orphen is looking for his friend who transformed into a dragon and flew away 5 years ago. Orphen's story might not seem much at first, but trust me it gets thicker as you go along. And and the world is amazing. It has so much lore which I really dig in fantasy stories. Not to mention the world building. Art: I thought it was really good and consistent. The fight scenes were also amazing. Nothing ufotable quality of course, but any action fan is gonna be satisfied with this one Sound: Also really good. The soundtrack selection was really good and fit the anime well Characters: I really liked Orphen. He's not the typical bratty Shonen MC. He's actually 20 years old which is a breath of fresh air from all these teenage protagonists. Cleo is the energetic companion of Orphen. She's rich, and cooks bad food... Yeah that's all you need to know. She will get more development in future seasons I'm sure, but right now, she's my least favorite of the party. Majic is Orphen's second companion. He's trying to be a sorcerer, so he's adventuring with Orphen as his apprentice. I like Majic. He's not annoying like Cleo, and from what we've seen has tremendous potential as a sorcerer. So I'm really excited to see his growth. Other characters are Orphen's former friends from his old days. Some are interesting, and some are not so much. The most important one from them is Lazalie. Orphen's friend who turned into a dragon. I don't want to talk a lot about her because spoilers. Overall: Orphen for me is a must watch for any action fantasy fan. I honestly wanted to give it a higher score, but I just needed more development for the characters like Majic & Cleo. Please don't let the score keep you from missing on this one. I enjoyed it a lot. And maybe you'll do too.

You might like this show if you're a similar anime fan as I am; Watching Bleach, Naruto, DBZ, Gundam Seed etc. whatever was on the weekend channels wherever you grew up (as for me, YTV in Canada). This is a good show. Good action sequences (not just brief flashes of MC in different positions to signify movement, but well-choreographed fight scenes). Good character development, and good side characters. Orphen is the story of one of the strongest wizard apprentices in history abandoning his wizarding school when they basically label his best-friend-turned-monster as a target to be killed. So, he follows his values and leaves the organization. Basically, this season is about him trying to save the person in question, while exploring the world and meeting new people. It was super refreshing to find a new anime that was action-based where the MC wasn't a complete limp-**** simp, which so many people seem to love. He is strong right from the beginning but not too OP, and has good character. They don't hold your hand with deaths or violence in this anime, not that it's over the top but it's still none of that "five inch laceration on your stomach that doesn't bleed and I'm fine in the next scene" nonsense. I up-rated this a bit because it blew my mind to see a 5.80 rating when legit rape and pedophile animes have higher ratings on this site, god help the depraved virgins that watch and defend that garbage. Good fights, decent story that tracks, and decent characters make for a solid 7/10 anime that brings any 25+ person back to their childhood with the anime vibes that this gives off, in a good way. If I've learned anything from this site, it's not to ignore the low-rating animes. Remember the type of illegal shit that goes on in so many high-rated anime (ishizoku reviewers or whatever, come on that little angel child has vivid sex scenes with some pedophile excuse that 'hey it's anime I'm older than I look!) and never forget that those people have equal rating rights as you. If you see a premise you like and art style that looks decent, put 10 minutes into watching it and feeling out the waters instead of 20 minutes reading reviews written by people with different preferences.

English Version Overall: (7.3 / 10) The reality is that as a first look into the world of "Orphen" I quite like the adaptation, I know that there is a lot of criticism from the "fans", so it was its predecessor but I can't get talking from that point, since I never I had the opportunity to follow her. Also, I am a believer that even though something was good in the past, it does not have the obligation to repeat itself to the letter, and the changes you must from time to time are necessary to give new airs, and although they do not believe it, this series does it quite well. .. Since in the beginning it is half confused by the events that are reported and the rhythm that it takes, but after the storm, calm comes, and from chapter 5 this anime truly began with Orphen's journey and consequently brought better moments, by which although I can't say it's perfect, it's also not bad to hang out if you want to see a bit of action and adventure. Although the characters are pretty much summarized in "Kryangelo and his companions" they end up falling well on the show and possibly in the future Everlasting and Majic will be much more important for the future. Finally the visual section to my liking is the best, it feels and fluid, so it is really nice to see the battles here.

Recommendation: Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi isn't the worst anime ever made, but it certainly feels that way while you're watching it. It is irredeemably awful, don't waste your time on this series. Contains some spoilers Story: Orphen is, you guessed it, an orphan, originally named Krylancelo (the names in this series are absolutely ridiculous). He was taken in by a sorcerer's tower along with his two "sisters" (Azalie and Tish), and they all became powerful mages before Azalie accidentally turned herself into a dragon during a failed magical experiment and the tower attempted to cover it up and declare her dead. This leads to Krylancelo falling out with the tower, taking the name "Orphen" and going off on his own to find a way to turn Azalie back into a human. In fact, Orphen accomplishes this almost immediately, solving the central problem of the story in about 3 episodes. The rest of the story is both aimless and pointlessly convoluted, featuring Azalie's murderous body-swapping adventures, a pointless digression into unnecessary and idiotic lore about "Deep Dragons" that are not actually dragons and are more like really big wolves (the reason for them being called Dragons is never explained), and a coup plot involving characters we don't know or care about. The writing is consistently awful, the pacing is even worse, and I didn't even bother attempting to parse what was happening at a certain point because it was all so tiresome and bad that I just wanted it to be over. This is certainly not a good anime adaptation, but it's very apparent from watching it that the source material it's working from is at least as bad if not worse. Audio/Visual: Very bad in both respects. The VA work is shoddy and the voices are often hilariously unfitting for their characters, especially Morikubo Shoutarou's work as Krylancelo/Orphen. The music in general is poor and the OP is ear-bleedingly awful. The animation is even worse than that though. It looks bad and low-budget most of the time, and they constantly fill time with unnecessary recaps and flashbacks just so they can reuse previously animated material to reduce the number of scenes they have to animate fresh, to the point that every single episode feels like a partial recap episode of the previous ones. The action and fighting scenes in particular are poorly animated and look like slideshows with bare minimum in-between animation. But all of that pales in comparison to the most unintentionally hilarious part of this series, Orphen's character design and outfit. The posters and still images don't really do justice how jarring it is to see this motherfucker dressed like every mall goth loser I went to high school with in 2004 while walking around in a fantasy world. This man is a sorcerer and he looks like he wants to tell me about how deep the lyrics to Avenged Sevenfold songs are at all times. Apparently someone, presumably the original writer or illustrator of the light novel, thought that this guy looked cool and he deeply, embarrassingly does not. Characters: Not a single likable one in the bunch. Orphen's rotating cast of sidekicks features a pair of dwarves that are among the most annoying characters I've ever seen in fiction, a stereotypical dumb blonde bimbo with a Deep Dragon kitten that brazenly exists solely to fix predicaments that the writer got himself into, a "student" that is so unmemorable that I forgot he existed every time he wasn't on the screen, and the impenetrably bitchy Azalie, who is a bit like Rachel from Tower of God in that she is endlessly and predictably betraying the main character while he continues to simp for her after she's fucked him over or killed people he cares about a hundred million times. I almost liked Tish for a while, and then because this series is committed to snuffing out even the tiniest bit of good will you could be holding towards it, she goes running into a trap while narrating out loud the whole time that she knows it's a trap and a bad idea to go in alone, and ends up permanently disabled and spends the rest of the season in a hospital bed. It's almost impressive how they managed to write a full cast of the most thoroughly unlikable dipshits you'll ever see, without even accidentally creating a fun or interesting character in the process. There is nothing positive to say about anyone or anything in this series.

I went into this show knowing basically nothing other than the fact that this show was adapted from an old LN back in the day. I decided to give it a shot, since the synopsis didn't look that bad. But, it's very, very unmemorable. It was produced in 2020, but it really feels like it was produced in 2005, with a slightly updated artstyle. I mean, the animation is just not up to par at all. The only compliments I can give is that CGI is used at the bare minimum, and the CGI isn't that bad. Other than that, it really looks dated, and not something a 2020 production should really create. Everything else is just as antiquated. The story is right out of a 90's anime. Well, what do you expect; the original LN series was released in 1994. Obviously, it's going to look like it. But it's not like old series are bad at all. There are a bunch that I like with a similar style to this one, but are just done a lot better. The only one I can think of right off the bat are Slayers!, which was pretty good, and Gokudou-kun Manyuuki, which was amazing. Both have very similar styles and were released around the 90's to 2000s. However, despite having similar qualities, Orphen has absolutely nothing going for it unlike the other two shows, which had their own charm that made them good. Orphen is just your bland formulaic story straight from a few decades ago. A cast of characters featuring a tomboy girl lead, "mysterious MC," and an eager student, this show pulls a lot of your classic and typical tropes into the main cast. You also got your comic relief characters as well that show up every story arc. Something like this is fine if you are like Slayers, because Slayers, despite being a fantasy story, is focused around comedy/action, while Orphen is more about serious fantasy story, so having some corny comic relief centering around your token cast of characters is very disharmonious to the overarching plot of the story. The main cast of characters, other than MC and Azalie (maybe the other childman students as well if you're stretching it) are basically comic relief. And very formulaic, predictable comic relief at that. The same exact "funny" and "stupid" things happen, so it gets old after a few episodes. I have to admit, this show had a good start. It didn't have the best art, but honestly, the beginning was fine. Comic relief was fresh and it had a good pacing and story. When the girl and boy join the MC is where the story takes a turn for the worse. Before that, you had a pretty compelling main storyline where you were wondering what was going to happen next, and what the characters were going to do. This more serious plot is ruined by the characters. That being said, the overarching plot in the series is not that bad. However, it's really not amazing, and not something I'll sit through to actually watch. The story loves to take very long detours involving arcs that really don't matter at all. And these arcs are all very mediocre and boring. It goes a little something like this: powerful enemy appears--->MC gets beaten or something/someone gets kidnapped---> MC powers up or something --------> some random "funny scene" happens------> MC saves the day, move on. This formula is dreadful and something that should be kept away in the embarrassingly bad tropes of the 90s. As a result of all these flaws, Orphen gets a 5/10 for me. It's absolutely not worth watching, but at the same time, it's not exactly the worst show in the world. It's just painfully bland and formulaic. It's a show that really didn't need an new adaption because it's nothing special. I'm sure the original 99' anime was just as predictable and boring.

Animation: As a long-time fan of this series, I had high expectations but I feared Deen would reprise their freakshow of Nanatsu. I was dead wrong, but they didn't improve that much either. Deen is actually good with fighting scenes and effects, although they're too quick to get a taste. The first episode has an ok fight while the brawl with Salua was very good-looking indeed. The only good-looking frames are the close-ups. Background characters always look weird and badly drawn. Scenarios are mostly static and lifeless. So basically, animation-wise, this first season is a 5/10 Story: A good story on its own doesn't hold much longer, because it needs proper adaptation and Deen rushed the fuck out of it, damn. All the books up until 6 range from 140 to 190 pages, so at least 3 to 4 episodes by book adapted. The first book got 4 episodes, but they cut content and decided to drag on the 4th episode with tons of flashbacks so they managed to make the first arc look both rushed and dragged. Books adapted were 1,4,5 and 6. Book 2 has important lore elements, that's why they had to make an OVA to explain it. Book 3 doesn't add that much but it's one of the most gory and violent stories and it has a thriller feeling, so it wouldn't fit well in Deen's shoneing up of this series (Yes, Orphen is a SEINEN series). Book 4 had 2 episodes, rushed too. The story gets better with books 5 and 6 because they had more episodes to them and didn't commit the same mistake as the first arc, so I'd give the story adaptation an overall of 6/10, considering what was adapted. Music: It's lackluster almost all the time if you ask me. It does its job, but it's not remarkable. I think it only stands out during very dramatic scenes and that's it, which is a shame since 98 and Revenge had a kickass OST, so I'd give this a 6/10.

I SUGGEST YOU WATCH THE OLD ONE(s) FIRST (Maj. Orphen 1998 and the revenge sequel). Basically, it's my opinion that this version is a better told story with lots of missing pieces due to its rushed nature. To fill in those gaps and really feel the show, context from the old versions is necessary. It makes it a show that you can appreciate so much more. When I first was about to watch this I saw all the bad reviews. I instantly knew I needed to see the old shows first and I'm glad I did. The funny part was that I had been procrastinating on watching the old ones for years, so this finally pushed to do that. This version's story is a little mixed around from the old version, but I think it's actually based off of a manga version that also mixed it around. This version has some of the same major plot points, but overall they add up to make a completely different (and maybe overall better?) story motive. The characters' personalities are slightly different, but nothing that changes the dynamic of the show. I can definitely see how this story would be hard to follow. It starts off more like a series of season summary episodes rather than a show; you have no way to gauge the gravity of the situations and truly understand why the characters feel and act the way they do with this show alone (at first). Without seeing the old shows, the characters almost seemed to act irrationally; the characters' relationships do actually develop in this one, but you never really experience it and you don't get the chance to let the characters grow on you. Somewhere later in the middle of the story, the show is no longer doing summaries of how the characters got in their situation (like every redone version of spiderman needs to tell you how he got his powers and the villains' backstories) and it develops into a great show with its own identity separate from the old one. I'm really looking forward towards the next season. I won't say much b/c I'm afraid to spoil lol. The art animation and sound weren't super special to me; kind of what you'd expect a decent show to look like during these times. It was pretty reminiscent of the old version, so I could be getting lost in that, but... idk, there's nothing really bad about it and I'm not enough of a fanatic to say what's good. Just like in the old show, the action scenes are great and nicely animated. Even if it isn't the smoothest, there's lots to appreciate. I enjoyed it, but I feel like I would've been missing a lot without the old show. This show's not bad alone, but when you grow to love the series, you'll appreciate it so much more. Happy watching.

I never finished the original anime or read the manga, so I'm only basing the show on itself. This was probably the most average anime I've ever seen. It's not good, but it's not bad either. I think it didnt do a very good job on character development or world building. It only did enough to get the story through. Hopefully, it gets better in the next season. The art style is decent enough. There is some action, but it almost feels limited, which isn't really a good thing when creating an epic fantasy. The conflicts feel rushed. As if it's just going from one conflict to another without slowing down to explain what's going on or investing time to build on the characters. I personally think the first 4 episodes should have been redone. There's so much story that was so rushed and very messy. Not really a good thing when creating the foundation of an anime.

Sorcerous Stabber Orphen. If there was a title that is more forced, I haven't yet seen it. This is an interesting case for sure. The series starts with three episodes that make you ask "should I continue watching?," then transforms into a great story, then the great story turns into a 1970s 1980s Hong Kong kung-fu film, then ends in the most ambigious manner. The animation is godawful. I understand it is based on a 1998-1999 anime series and, I didn't check but probably an even earlier manga. The drawings cannot be found anywhere else in the 21st Century apart from Detective Conan, they are that bad. The music is completely out of tune, out of character, and meaningless. The characters are not well defined at all. So, a lad named Krylancero grows up in an orphanage with two girls and all three of them are transferred to a school for sorcery, and even though the boy is about up to 10 years younger than the girls, he is in the same class with them. Dramatic things happen, he leaves the school to find Azalie, one of the two girls he grew up with. In the five years that follow, he chooses the name Orphen as he is an "orphan", somehow becomes a loan shark who can not pay the rent for his boarding house room. He meets with two kids and two dwarves and a myriad other people and all the characters are made off of cardboard as they don't develop at all, or far worse, they do develop the moment development is required on the script. The affair with the girl Azalie is very complicated, even incomprehensible because the writer made a mess of the story's continuity. There is a church, an upper echelon of sorcerers whomever they are, a cult, rangers, royal family, and none of these lift a finger when people massacre others in the middle of the big city. Also, there is no background story that illuminates who and what these people and institutions are. Still, have I managed to watch it from one end to the other; yes I did and I have a tendency to drop anime shows 10 minutes into them. Did I enjoy it; I surely liked more than half of the episodes. Would I recommend it? Only if you are bored, don't have anything else to read, watch, or listen to. So, not the best show ever, but it is watchable.

This show is incredibly average shows that are average I no longer enjoy I need to watch above-average shows because I watched so many average shows that when I go into an anime I can tell when it's going to be average and honestly a lot of them are average but there are closer to 6 but this show was so average that it was a perfect 5 good enough you should be striving for seven Behrman and 8 if you can get an eighth that show is definitely worth the time this show is not worth the time the story is not worth the time everything about this show is so average that it's bad
