Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

This movie makes you believe that something genuinley happy is going to happen to these characters. If you watched the original evangelion you know how much these characters are hurt mentally and the suffering they go through so it made me so happy to see something genuinely good for everyone happen to them. But Evangelion 2.0 just says no and just crushes that hope. It's so much more devasting if you watched the original evangelion. I both hate the creators for making me feel pain like this but also I love that they are able to make the audience feel this much emotion.

I liked this movie much more, they show more things other characters appear. I loved it. The animation is very very good, the protagonist puts much more will on it than before now if it makes you want to see it. In the original series a desire to break his legs gives you in each episode now I empathize more with him. The first film disappointed me to be honest, but this one is very very good and I still have 2 more films left so let's see what happens. What this story has in store for us. I recommend it if you plan to see it look at it and if you do not plan to see it also look at it. Another thing that I'm liking is the references it has to the same series in each fight. I love that that makes it much more enjoyable, you say, look at that is how it happened in the series. En español: Esta película me gusto mucho mas muestran mas cosas aparecen otros personajes. Me gusto mucho.

Look, I know this is controversial, but I found this movie to be more exciting than anything in the original NGE series (apart from EoE). This is the first time I was actually at the edge of my seat watching fighting scenes in any anime ever. Of course this movie series is more about the world of the evangelion universe than Shinji's struggles in life, so it can't really be compared. Keep this in mind. I prefer NGE for its relationships and characters, but prefer the rebuild more for its action. I heard a lot of times from elitists that the rebuilds are complete ass and it's recommended to be skipped, but I really damn enjoy these. I had no idea what this 'Mari'-character was going to be like but she turns out to be quite the badass, that made me like her even more than Asuka... The ending made me say "Holy shit, are you serious?", wich I never had, again, in any fighting anime before. I was highly invested in the story here, altough I (and probably 99% of earth's population) still doesn't fully understand the story in its entirety. I really recommend the movie. The story is mostly the same as the original, but it replaces some known scenes with other characters, but near the end the plot takes a whole other turn. edit: I bought the movie physically. It only has Japanese (& French) audio and I'm really dissapointed. The dub is 200% better. Yes, I said it. Mari's Japanese VA is absolutely NOTHING compared to the English one, and it even ruins my favourite scene. I beg you: watch the dub.

Eva 2.0 is what its title suggests; it’s an upgrade from the first movie. It still carries some of the problems from 1.0, but the original content is a welcome addition. Now that the formalities are over with in Eva 1.0, Eva 2.0 is where the deviation from the source material begins. One of my complaints with the previous film is that it feels like an extended movie trailer because it tried to cram episodes together. This movie doesn’t nearly have that problem. While there are old story elements sprinkled here and there, most of this film is new content that has room to breathe. The direction is stronger here; there isn’t a need to cut out as much radio silence as possible. There are some interesting character moments here and there. Rei has more of a soul, and a subplot regarding a dinner with Gendo brought some warmth to her character. More importantly, Shinji doesn’t suck here. His sulking is much more tolerable and understandable in this film. A new character, Mari, is introduced, and she’s serviceable, I guess. There is more emphasis on 3D animation here, which is positive or negative depending on how you see it. I feel this makes Eva look sleek and modern, though I can understand people who prefer a more traditional look. Overall, Eva 2.0 is alright. What it adds, it succeeds at. The whole film still has a case of the “movie trailer syndrome”, and I found the story to be directionless, much like its predecessor. While the climactic scenes are done well, there are some baffling music choices during crucial points of the story that, if substituted with another song, would’ve greatly improved the scenes. It’s definitely better than 1.0, but I won’t lie, I was a bit bored watching through it.

I'm writing this review as a fan of the original series. In constrast to the 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, which was pretty much a rerun of the first 6 episodes from the series with a few additions, this movie takes the story to a much different direction. You will the interactions between the characters will be a little more different. It feels like this story takes place in a parallel world where characters make different choices that will affect the outcome of the story drastically. The athmosphere is a little less dark compared to the series and the most of the main characters show more affection towards Shinji (even Gendo will spare a moment of his time to give an advice about growing up which, I must admit, caught me off-guard). On the other hand, Shinji being on the focus lessens the interacton between other characters and that really weakens the character development. There are also some subtle jokes where the occurances do not just differ but also take exactly the opposite direction from the scenes of the series like Asuka's first meeting to Pen-Pen, Toji's "losing the prize" and Rei blocking Asuka's slap which really put a smile on viewer's face. You Can (Not) Advance is a story taking place in an alternative reality which starts just after sixth episode of the series. Take a look at it. Depite being quite different than the original story you may still find it to your liking.

If you are looking for epic movies, I definitely recommend you to watch this one, you'll not regret watching Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. I promise you. Now, I actually didn't reviewed Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone for the reason that it covered the first few episodes of the original series (but expect the changes) and the movie actually focused Shinji and Rei's relationship. And yes, this is the sequel of the first movie. Angels are keeping on attacking and Rei and Shinji are carrying the responsibility to save humanity. And to add to their team, there is the fiery Asuka and the mysterious Mari. How will they'll gonna fight the Angels? Will the Third Impact happen? Same old story but is added epicness. Thats what I can say about Evangelions 2.0's story. Definitely unique and the plot twists are actually good. As much that I enjoyed the original series' story, its applied in my enjoyment here too. 9/10 You know how much the art improved in the Rebuilds? 100% new and better. CGI is applied on the EVA's here that actually made them more baddass and the Angels, all of them have epic faces that makes me wonder why they looked like that. 10/10 The sound is nearly perfect but I don't why songs are applied when some battle scenes appeared. But still, the music score is epic that its like I'm hearing Yuki Kajiura's music but I don't want to compare their musics, both are good composers. The ED song by Hikaru Utada is quite good. 9/10 The characters. I felt the development among Shinji, Asuka and Rei. Shinji became a completely baddass at the final minutes of the movie. Same old boy that is having tantrums but he is a Yandere, don't make him angry or you'll feel his wrath. Rei, I loved her development here (that is same with Asuka), she comes out in her nutshell and actually eager to build up Shinji and Gendo's relationship. Her and Shinji's relationship may be weird (because of some reasons, its a spoiler) but I felt it here. Asuka Langley SHIKINAMI. This movie changed her surname and some parts of her personality is changed but the thing here is if you hate Asuka in the original series, in this movie, she is not that annoying as you think. I don't know why but her relationship with Shinji is kinda weak here than in NGE. She is completely baddass here. Mari Makinami Illustrious, the pilot of EVA 05 is a mysterious person but likeable. You know how to like a female character when she is baddass when it comes to fighting. The other characters are simply the same. Misato knows NERV's secrets that surprised me about her character. And Kaworu, still the same but he kinda have some connection with Gendou. 10/10 Overall, Evangelion 2.0 is epic and great. Its a pleasure to watch it and to re-watch it again. And, I recommend that if you are going to watch the Rebuilds, watch the original series+EOE first before the movies because of big changes. And maybe this will not hunt me but it deserves to have a high score. 9/10

Evangelion 2.22 You can(not) advance is one of the best anime movies I ever seen. Mostly for the beautiful visuals, exspecially the last few moments of the film. But the movie is not all great visuals alone.Storywise it's really nice to see the characters happy for once compared to their tv series counterparts, mostly if you love the series and the care about the characters much as I do. It's also nice that there's comedic moments as well :) the music is good too, it should be it won a award, but despite all that it turns into the EVA we know and love and is just wonderful for a fan like me this movie was a treat.

Before watching this movie, I thought Rebuild was just going to redo the series in better animation. I was wrong. Evangelion 2.0 You Can (not) Advance creates a new path way for the Eva series with its amazing characters, soundtrack, fight scenes and animation. It stays true to the original series, but makes clear deviations that will hopefully continue to improve with the movies. Even the angels have been improved with a few much needed edits and improvements. Overall, this is a movie that no Eva fan should miss out on. Be warned though, despite its amazing content and appeal, this movie will leave you with many questions that probably won't be addressed by anyone but yourself.

I'm not sure why some fans of the original Evangelion series are blasting this movie. Yes I know, that some of the best parts in the series were skipped, and characters changed, but so what? Sometimes change can be good, and these new changes to the series are damn good. Some of the battle scenes between the angels have been improved drastically to the point where you have to stand in awe of it's epicness, and the new character developments of Rei and Asuka are a plus to their original personalities. Also new characters, such as the new pilot Mari, are a welcome addition to the series, as her character is introduced in a great way to the audience in the opening scene, by showing her enjoyment and fun of piloting an Eva, while kicking ass at the same time. Also the character development of Shinji near the end is exactly what the original series was missing. People want to see him grow a pair, and start fighting for others instead of himself. Overall it was a great film to watch, and would highly reccommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. It is worth your money, and you will be blown away by it.

OK let's go over something for a bit. Bebop may have been my first anime and I saw about four or five others after it but the anime that really got me watching hardcore was Fullmetal Alchemist. It surpassed the hype that I had heard about it and made me happy to no end. After that somebody lent me their platinum collection of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The one thing I had always heard about it was that it was the greatest thing evar and no other anime has come close to its brilliance. Well I watched and I can see why people think it's masterpiece, it's pretty darn good. I like the action in it, it used certain score motifs and animation styles well, the voice acting was bad at first but quickly improved, I liked the fact that it took risks by exploring deep philosophical messages when people would have just been satisfied with a regular mech anime and overall I would agree that it was revolutionary for its time. However I did have problems with it, some characters I just straight up didn't care about like Misaro or Ayaname, the switching of tones in some episodes was a bit drastic and while I enjoyed the last two episodes I thought they could have been one episode instead of two and summed up a bit neater. Then I saw The End of Evangelion. Many people have said that The End of Evangelion is Hideaki Anno's giant fuck you to the fans who hated the original last two episodes of the show. Well I managed to feel that. I hated this movie. The plot got way too out of hand, it was overly cruel to its characters, there were film making techniques that came off as a bad David Lynch impersonation, the ending was a complete cop out and the entire movie made me wanna scream. So with that in mind I checked out Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone. I had heard that all it was, was the first 6 or so episodes condensed, reanimated and re dubbed and that was 100% true. I took the first film as nothing more than fan service and sighed. There was an opportunity to do more but they really just did the George Lucas thing but a lot better and with less financially driven ideals. So now we've come to Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance, and I gotta say guys if you were to ask me before I saw this movie I would have said I just wanna see it for the new animation. It's just going to be the same exact thing as the series so hooray. But wow. This movie shattered my expectations of what I could expect from an Evangelion product. When I sat down to watch the original series expecting to be amazed THIS is what I was hoping for. This is a more than worthy successor to the legacy that Evangelion carries with it. There's so much that happens in this movie that to try and describe it would be going into spoiler territory so I'll try and remain vague but informative. One of the main problems I had with Evangelion was its story structure. I was able to follow along with it but it did get a bit heavy handed at times. The surreality was good but by the last two episodes it got a little grating. With 2.22 they finally struck that perfect balance with moments of surrealism perfectly intertwined with the action and human anguish of the main story. I loved the fact that they were actually able to get to a point that was the same in the series but had a completely different way of getting there. The action in this movie is extremely well staged as always with Evangelion big fights feel epic and there's so much more brutality in these fights that you didn't feel before. While Misaro still feels a bit inconsequential like in the series Rei has more growth and development. I guess my problem with Rei in the series was one of her trademarks which was her distant attitude and lack of emotion. I usually don't support trying to make emotionless characters more human because that's what kinda makes them interesting but for some reason the things they had Rei doing in the movie that were a little more indicative of a teenage girl really felt right. I ended up caring more about her and found her really enjoyable to watch. Shinji and Asuka still keep their personalities however which I fully support. I love the way these two work off of each other and they're the center of the film's comedy. The dub is masterfully done, it's great that they got back nearly all of the main cast with the exception of Amanda Winn-Lee as Rei but Brina Palencia is more than qualified to handle it. Everyone is on their A-Game bringing the raw emotion needed to carry the dialogue, there is such rage delivered in some of these lines that it can actually get kinda scary. When Shinji freaks out it doesn't come off as whiny it comes off as tortured and from a place of pain. Asuka is still able to keep that better than you attitude while still having that insecurity and Rei as said before just comes off as normal teenage girl trying to find her way. Trina Nishimura as always turns in a stellar performance as Mari which carries notes of insanity but still being badass. I wish I could say more about the flick but it would really ruin it if you go in knowing too much. What I will say is that Evangelion 2.22 finally gets it right for me. It hits that sweet spot that I've desperately been looking for in this title. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a bonafide classic, it has loyal fans, created an international whirlwind and will likely be fondly remembered for years to come. I enjoyed the original series for its daring new storytelling but was disappointed in its final outcome. This rebuild series is proof that time can change a story for the better. It's one of the few remakes that goes above and beyond its original material. These movies could have been a total fuck up but if this was any indication then it's definitely heading in the right direction. I give Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance 4 and a half out of five stars. 4.5/5

I'm too lazy to write a full review but here goes. This is the best animated film I have ever seen and yes, I have seen the Haruhi Suzumiya film. While both films can't really be compared, some people are going to compare them and claim which one is the superior film. Eva 2.0 redefines what an animated film should be. It aspires to be something greater than the norm and Anno has proven himself to be the glorious bastard that he is. I went in skeptical and while some parts of the film still didn't sit well with me, this is what all anime films should aspire to be. Constantly entertaining and maybe even make you think once in a while. I will say that I get bored during movies... alot but this film keeps the viewer interested the entire time. During most films, I check to see how long it has left but never once in this film. I was completely engrossed the entire time. While I may not have the glorified opinion that is always right as some people on this site claim to have, as far as I'm concerned, this is the best animated film I have ever seen. I encourage without restraint to any purveyor of fine animated products.

Kept the flow of previous Evangelion 1.0 with further introduction of new characters. It can be regarded as Awakening of Shinji and occurrence of 3rd wave. It did surpass the 'You are (not) alone' in each aspects. It reveals the thrilling events of 2nd wave occurred 15 years ago and previews life facets of contemporaneous earth. This part opens the files of Angles and world agency involved in recovery of mass destruction caused unknown alien beings. After the disastrous event of Angle 6, the base of NERV goes into advancement with Evangelions. At the same time Europe and US based defence force has been fall down by the angles. With such moment, it becomes hard to recover the mess and repair the robotic alike machinery weapon. With the higher defence discussion proposed by mysterious huge organisation SEELE sends defeated unit 5 and 6 to Japan for repairing and to appoint new pilot for respective Evangelion unit in Japanese base. Meanwhile protagonist Shinji Ikari has been introduced with Asuka Langley Soryu, who has been appointed with EVA-02 unit under Katsuragi Misato. EVA-02 is advanced battle type which made for battle motive. With Asuka being new member under Misato, she has to share same apartment with Shinji, which leads difficult and learning phase Asuka ; as she prefer being alone and isn't a open minded type. On the other hand Kaji Ryoji, former boyfriend of Misato returns to NERV as co-worker with the corporation of SEELE for short period of time(as per the dialogues), leads a up-down moment for both ex-lovers in the same work place. Rei tries her best to link up Shinji with his father which she nearly succeed. Asuka hue sto the same school Rei and Shinji and tries to learn social life even though she shows herself as a person not interested among people gathering. With Ryoji, Shinji and his friend go to aquarium where they see last piece of survived aquatic animals that survived 2nd wave. It has been shown after 2nd wave, most of the earth water surface is colored with blood ; concludes pure blue water is very rare source after 2nd wave and it deduce with each wave there is chance of new evolution in animals. After the Europe and US based defence force arrive in Tokyo, Asuka is appointment as new pilot for EVA-03. After getting it the new Evangelion, the NERV team came to know that it has been possesed by corrupt type angle, which curropted the EVA-03 system from within leads it to go berserk. Later with Shinji piloting EVA-01 has to fight the corrupted evangelion(by that time, weapon has already been declared as an angle). Shinji denies order to fight angle 9 after knowing Asuka is within it, which results in EVA-01 to controlled through dummy system ends up killing the angle along with Asuka. The result of Asuka's death anger Shinji andhe decides to leave NERV. The next moment new angle with superior ability of creating wave live offence appears, NERV tries it's best to endure the angle's wrath from the city. With the help of new pilot from Europe division Mari Makinami Illustrious they tend to stop for a moment, but it fails as the angle evolves with circumstances, later with further help from Rei with a missile, tries to break it wave defence, which ended up Rei getting eaten by the angle. By the moment Shinji comes back again as EVA pilot to avenge Rei, later Shinji awakens trigger which is beyond human capability of EVA-01 as Shivji succeed to bring back Rei from angle and obliterates the angle follows to begging of 3rd wave. Gendou Ikari has always been assured that Shinji is capable of awakening the trigger, that is the reason he has been keeping him in check with Rei as Shinji's trigger point. With the new break of wave, many more things have drawn near to conclusion. SEELE may try to eye on NERV's Evangelion awakening. Asuka's death is yet to be confirmed ! with that more of thrill to come by next installment. A good enjoyment.

This 1st movie was a lot better than the 2nd because they stuck to the original series and changed few things but this movie changed too much. The movie is a continuation of the second and we are greeted to Asuka and Ms. Fanservice as the 3rd and 4th Eva pilots. The movie is very confusing, like the original series but you don't care enough to try to understand what is happening. Most of the characters are underdeveloped and are bland and boring. The show is much less psychological and has much more action in it. Just watch the original series or even read the manga. If you have already watched the original series then you will be disappointed.
Lab_Mem_Num001
If it wasn't for some really off-putting CGI, and *looks up character's name* Mari Makanami being added to the film for what appears to be fan service and a couple action sequences, this would have been a perfect film that did an incredible job of summarizing the bulk of the series in just under 2 hours. It's funny how I went from being turned off the film entirely during the first five minutes to being sucked right in and having my mouth propped ajar in amazement during the film's final five minutes. If anyone went through watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and thought to themselves, "I'd enjoy this show so much more if Shinji displayed some progression by building confidence in himself and in his abilities to pilot the EVA but eventually reaching his breaking point because of the central conflict with his father instead of taking all of his frustrations out on everyone and most of all himself", then you are going to like these rebuild films a lot. And this is coming from a guy whose biggest weakness is his lack of self-confidence when trying new things. Warts and all, I still prefer NGE as a whole, but through two rebuild films, this retelling of the story makes Shinji a much more likable protagonist and it changes the dynamic of the relationship he has with Rei. Instead of it being about two individuals who would rather be alone forming a bond out of necessity for preserving their sanity, this rebuild film makes it seem like it's the start of a romance. Misato even issued a challenge to Asuka letting her know that Shinji is putting the moves on Rei and more importantly, Rei was responding. On my initial viewing of NGE, I didn't realize that Asuka liked Shinji but didn't know how to show it so she chose to belittle and to torture him. In the rebuild films, it is heavily implied and it makes Asuka's intentions that much more clear even if she comes across as more of a stuck-up asshole than she was in the series. I'm curious to find out how they're going to handle her backstory in the next film and how it ties into the way she shelters herself from other people with constant violence. Asuka was always my least favorite character in the series and it took me a long time to understand why she behaved the way that she did. In a much shorter time frame, I felt that the film did a really good job of showcasing Asuka's talents and many of her abusive eccentricities while getting the audience to care for her. And the main reason we do care is because Shinji does. Even though he has no reason to care for her, he still has the moral high ground to determine what is right or wrong in the heat of the moment despite going against a direct order from his own father. And "stupid Shinji" (lol!) damn near lost his life because of the choice. I wonder if the relationship dynamic between Asuka and Shinji is going to change in the upcoming rebuild films too or if she'll still feel depressed and defeated because she now knows that she is no longer the best and that she needed Shinji's help to survive. Asuka suffers from the same Hedgehog's Dilemma that Shinji does but to an even more extreme degree. Instead of retreating into her own world like Shinji does, Asuka violently forces people out of hers because she's scared to find out what would happen if she ever allowed herself to feel vulnerable again. That's why in the show, Asuka's life being in danger and Shinji, the one that she likes but refuses to let him get close, being the one that saves her was the worst thing that could happen to her pysche. She felt like she was going to get hurt again so she'd rather make sure that she hurts Shinji twice as hard than admit that she was vulnerable. The movies haven't gone into her backstory yet (edit: neither does [Film103051 so Asuka might just be an asshole lol! But she does get results and has her priorities straight which makes her much more likable than she was before even if she is a less sympathetic character because of this omission) Overall, I really wish CGI wasn't so heavily implemented in this film. There are some really ugly frames that take away from the film and it doesn't mix well with the original artwork. However, the ending sequence had some of the most beautiful CGI from the Evangelion universe and was super intense. It also ends a bit differently than the show did leaving you with the suspicion that the third film is going to have some major differences than the series did. (edit: I never imagined how true this statement was going to be) I am really looking forward to seeing how this ambitious change effects the story going forward. 8/10

SPOILERS Continuing the Rebuild of Evangelion Series of Movies I watched Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. I really enjoyed watching this movie, unlike 1.0 this movie was really full of energy and content, finally premiering Asuka, harder angels, adding Mari to the story and new Evas and new problems. I really loved how full this movie was, it was really entertaining and unlike 1.0 this is really when the story starts to deviate from NGE, making it fresh and more exciting. The battle, like always, are amazing. From Shinji crying to his Father to not smash Asuka in the Eva 03, to the amazing battle of the really cool berserk Eva 03 against Ramiel it was really amazing. A common theme I see in the Rebuilds is that unlike NGE doesn't go too deep into the characters feelings and psychological trauma, something that was a big part (if not the main thing) of the original show. But at least we get amazing visual (as always) and more Eva. The near third impact really was surprising to me and made me really excited for 3.0. I give Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance a 8/10
Marinate1016
The rebuilds might not focus on depression, PTSD and other psychoanalytical things, but damn it they're amazing. 2.0 in particular is in my personal opinion, better than the OG series. Seeing the revamped art, animation, reimagined fights and different directions they've gone in is absolutely incredible. My personal favourite part is what they have done with Rei. Rei in the first series was admittedly forgotten by Anno. In the rebuild, particularly 2.0, her personality is fleshed out so much more and she and Shinji's relationship really begins to develop. For me, this is already leaps and bounds better than the OG series where she was basically irrelevant post episode 11. Now, many old heads get upset when the rebuilds are brought up. "They're not the same NGE as when I was a kid" no shit. They're a different story for a different generation, written by a different man. Anno is not the same depressed 35 year old otaku who didn't shave his beard and threw his meds out the window. NGE and and EoE were written by a young man who was lost and had lots of questions about life. The rebuilds are written by a man who has those answers and it shows.

It's still unnecessary! I genuinely think that the rebuild movies add nothing of value to the overall franchise. On the other hand, they don't damage it either, so i can at least appreciate that, but i still wonder about the point. Even the animation isn't that much better, the only thing that's improved is the look of the angels. They are freaky, i like it, but i had never had any complains about the old designs. So lets go into detail. Story: They are more changes than they had in the previous movie, even introducing a new character and some new Eva-Units. But at the same time, it rushes through the major points of like 15 Evangelion-episodes while still adding stuff. That sounds like a disaster, right? Well, i wouldn't go that far. What i will say though: I didn't like a single change they made to the story. Not compared to the original show anyway. Beware for spoilers in this part, cause i wanna list some of them. Asuka becomes the pilot of Unit-03. Thats kinda dumb, though i understand why they did that. There just wasn't enough time to develop Suzuhara and they had to get rid of Asuka for the second change i really hated. Mari goes up against the final angel in Unit-02. Now i'm a sucker for berserk-moments, when a character goes completely nuts but this one didn't do it for me. And what the hell happened to Compatibility between Eva and pilot? That doesn't seem to be important anymore. Also, Shinji seems to be more in control and i don't think i like that either. For example, when Unit-01 awakens, Shinji still controls it in a way, that kinda defeats the point of this creepy monster, that doesn't bow to anyone's will, at least in this instant. And don't block his vision during the dummy-plug scene! I could rant forever, but let me just proceed with my judgement: 6/10, it was okay, but also very rushed. Art: Still top notch, i`ll say that much, but again not much better then the original. There is more CGI at work, but not in a bad way, it's not too prominent and never looks stupid. I already mentioned the great Angel-design and that is my final rating. Nothing changed much, the art is still great. I had goosebumps at one shot of the final. Sound: They are some great new songs, cheerful compositions with cute, child-vocals...that play at the most gruesome scene and the literal end of the world. I like it, but i also understand that they wanted to recreate the third impact in End of Evangelion, that's my assumption at least. Of course that didn't work at all, but it was still nice. Still no Cruel Angel Thesis, life is suffering. But the sound is great, overall. Character: The Characters. They are changes. Let's start with someone less important, Kaji. He barely appears this time or at least he doesn't do anything new. Hell, they took out his plant watering scene and even burned his garden! How dare they! I already said that Shinji is more in control, Rei develops a personality and Asuka is still messed up, but her Issues are only touched on the surface, as to remind us and to say "yes, we know about her past, we just don't have the time right now". Mari is...too happy? She just seems always capable, readily piloting the Eva and is even able to push it to new heights. I don't know, i hate that the term Mary Sue floats around in my head while thinking about her, because i don't like that meme. I will withhold judgement on her until i know more, there is another movie after all. If this is a loop, than i guess it's interesting what happens to Rei. If she is the fourth one and thereby learning to be more human. Maybe they just wanted her to be more interesting and likable, i can't say yet. I would have really liked to see that dinner, even Gendo wanted to attend, that would have been interesting. But alas, suffering took the priority, as is Eva-tradition. I still think the Characters are very good, but the original did it better. Enjoyment: My Enjoyment gets lower with every one of these movies. Too much time i spent rationalizing what was happening, why they did some of the changes that happened and the moments that were supposed to be hype never completely got me. I wasn't bored, i say this almost every time, but that's because that is a really important point to me. If i have to drag myself through an anime, then i would completely bomb this category, leaving it with a really low score. Since it was still entertaining, i'd call it good. But its almost a six, too much of it rubbed me the wrong way. My question was not answered. I still don't see the purpose of the Rebuilds. Now up until this point everything was a rewatch, but i've never seen the third movie yet. I know it deviates a lot from the original and it finally does what i always wanted: telling the story after the Third Impact. So i am excited for it, but at the same time, i'm also cautious. Don't play with my heart Anno, don't do it. Don't ruin your masterpiece. You haven't yet, its still okay, but just...you can (not) improve it.

One of the big criticisms of the first film in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, 1.0 or You (are) not Alone, was that it was ultimatly just a prettier version of the first eight episodes of the show. I'm a very big fan of the first film, it's what introduced me to Evangelion, but yes, it is just a (damn good, personally) retelling of the show's first third. Evangelion 2.0, or You Can (Not) Advance, is a notable departure from the first film. This film whilst having, for the most part, has moments that very much feel like the television series, it very much stands on it's own and sets itself apart from NGE and leads the Rebuild of Evangelion in a bold new direction. I won't go into detail on these deviations, but rather tackle a rather interesting case of 'anime deconstruction' that was already apparent in the franchise as a whole. When it comes to the story department, 2.0 begins to really tackle the 'deconstruction of an anime' theme that NGE is pretty well known for, but instead of applying it exactly to the mecha genre, as was apparent in 1.0 and the series as a whole, I feel that 2.0, most notably the climax is a critique and deconstruction of the shounen genre of anime overall. Without delving into details, the version of Shinji in 2.0 (outside of the Dummy Plug incident) is more reactive, 'powerful' and willing to actually pilot the Evangelion. In the climax of the film, Shinji exhibits an insane drive to save everyone and stop the Angel, gaining a kind of power boost that happens very frequently in shounen anime... However, this is what leads into Hideaki Anno's deconstruction of this kind of trope, as Shinji's insane power boost as dire consequences in the moments succeeding it, and into the next movie as a whole. There is a fair amount of new characterisation in the films over the series - most notably, Asuka's personality takes a new path within the film. When she first appears in the film she seems to be fairly similar to the version of Asuka we see in the show. Over the course of the movie, we see her grow in ways very differently to the show, showing us (at least in my interpretation) that her character isn't trying to be the best pilot or person so people will like her, but she's trying to become the best because that's all she really has, which is something begins to change in the film, most notably in her phone call with Misato prior to Unit-3. I really like this take on Asuka in the films - In the show, Asuka had the most complex character outside of Shinji, and seeing her psychology develop was truly a gift of a character. Seeing a new version of such a well-developed character is honestly rather refreshing and really interesting at the new take on the character. When it comes to the other characters, not a ton really needs to be said. Outside of Shinji's incursion into several shounen-like tropes (as I interpreted above), but there is also the inclusion of Mari, which is honestly kind of mixed for me. I love her character design and the weird, bubbly personality that comes from her... But when it comes to the character itself, it at times feels like she was fairly tacked on, really only there to show off the new abilities of Unit-02. If they had shown something that would hint at her role in future films, that would have redeemed it, but she just feels kind of... just there at the moment. On the rest of the characters, like I said, they are fairly more similar to their NGE counterparts, outside of Rei, who I feel gets more emotional development in this film then the show, such as her attempts to reconcile Shinji and Gendo. The similarites to the show are in no way a negative towards the film, as the little additions matter a ton as well, and we already get a wealth of new characterisation with just Shinji and Asuka. Visually, the style of the movie is always on par with Evangelion 1.0's very, very excellent animation levels. With the budget not avaliable for NGE and one that might possibly exceed 1.0, this film has several stand out moments that visually exceed anything seen yet at that time in the mecha genre, and proof, at least to myself, that CGI does have a place in anime when done in a decent and non-consuming way. I feel one of the best additions to this film is the use of several voiced insert songs give an amazing sense of emotion to several battles, notably The Dummy Plug sequence and Shinji rescuing Rei in the climax of the film. Honestly, they stand out as probably the best moments of the film overall, considering what is going on during them. Oops, that went a bit too long! Overall, Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance is on it's own an amazing a film and a masterful addition to the overall Evangelion franchise. It provides us with new characterisation, interesting plot deviations that set it apart from the similarity that plagued 1.0, and probably some of the best animation and CG used in anime up until that time. 2.0 ranks among the best entries in the franchise as a whole, and sets itself apart as possibly one of the best anime films in a long, long time.

I havent watched NGE yet, so I wont do any comparisons between the original series and the rebuild movies. I'll just write my personal opinion on one of the best anime movies I've seen in a long time: Evangelion 2.0 - You can (not) advance. Story: Its about pilots in huge robots fighting other huge monters ( the end ). Well seriously though,he movie picks up after the first movie ended and honestly, I dont even wanna tell you a lot about its plot because thats the fun of watching this movie. All the plot twists, drama and the story are very good. Yes, it certainly isnt a Death Note in terms of its dialogue, but it really doesnt need to be. The story mainly revolves around Shinji and how he deals with his situation. The problems that occur that mean a possible threat to his friends and his personal development. His first "real" relationships with people with his age and potential loss. There are some extremely impressive dramatic sequences in this movie which will make you think daaaaamn, thats gotta be painful 0_o. All in all, the story is very well done and although its part of a series, the ending is just amazing. Characters: YES! SHINJI ISNT A PUSSY ANYMORE. Honestly, I had already thought that he did sthovie, but awesome in the 1st movie Shinji ( the MC and a pilot of the huge ass robots that i mentioned before, the Evas ) receives some great character development in this movie. He starts to like some of the other pilots and gains feelings for some of them. But he's forced to deal with potentially losing them which makes some scenes that much more impressive. I really like him in Eva 2.0. Then there is Rei, who previously had the personality of a rock. She starts to get into relationships with the other characters and gains somewhat of a personality. There are still quite a bit of development that she could experience, but overall its a pretty satisfying change to see someone like here actually caring about other people, especially Shinji. Asuka is introduced in this movie and she is the definition of tsundere. She has some social issues ( like Shinji ) that are adressed during the movie which make her ... well, interesting. I really didnt like here during here first 10min of on-screen time, but as she opened up to the MC she seemed more likeable ( still dont like her as much as Shinji though ). Misato .... weeeell, many old NGE fans cant stand her in this movie (like the story and about everything else, cuz I dunno ). I like her, I mean, yes I know that her backstory is shown in one short scene ... oh shit, no NGE comparisons, totally forgot 0_o Anyways, she is a character that is helps the other characters at doing what they do, while being their commander. And dont wanna drag this section out, so I'll just tell you that especially the development of the characters of the movie is impressive while their personalities differ in a mjor way. From the shy Shinji without self confidence ( during the beginning ), to the bossy Asuka and Rei, who seems to slowly develop into someone likeable. Production Values: Isanely good. From the animation to the music, its nearly perfect. Lets get to the animation first. Its soooo good. Some of the action scenes to the scenes in which the characters just talk, everything is animated masterfully and I cant really say anything bad about this part of the movie. The characters designs are great and the mechs all have more or less unique designs. The actions scenes, as previously mentioned, are so well animated that you well get that: HOLY SHIT, THATS AWESOME! feeling in this movie, several times. The music sounds incredible too. Its orchestral music with choires and that means the definition of epicness. From "Beast 2" to "Decisive Battle". The OST is one of my favourites. Many OSTs are just remakes of tracks from NGE, but they still sound awesome. So yea, 10 for art and animation and a 9 for its music Enjoyment: I freaking loved this movie, it was intense, suspensful, and sometimes incredibly dramatic. It had some of the most impressive action scenes I've ever scene which were accompanied by some of the best OSTs I've heard in a long time. Great characters development, a good plot and an amazing ending. Why no 10 in terms of the story or the characters? Certain characters could've had a bit a of more focus on them while its not a completely standalone story. When Evangelion 4.0 comes out and has a great end, the 9 will turn into a 10, because then, I'll be fully statsfyied. Well all of that in short: I enjoyed the living hell out of this movie. Target Audience: There are many problems that NGE fans have with this one, so If you've held back on watching this movie cuz of its incredibly high ratings, watch the damn things. Mecha fans, people who enjoy amazing production values, people who are able to really involve themselves in an extremely interesting plot and people like me,who watched it due to their interest in the source material ( while not having watched the series yet ) will definetly enjoy this one. Overall 10 / 10
