I understand that Evangelion was a major phenomenon in 1990s but as a younger person I was too young to watch the original series when it came out. So when I watched the new “Rebuild” movies I had only no previous knowledge of the plotline or characters other than I heard that the story was weird, confusing, but apparently was famous for having deeply psychologically damaged characters. As a psychology major, I was practically salivating at the thought of being able to analyze some messed up characters because even though I love all the cuteness that inhabits the anime world, it’s rare to find a show that has deep characters. Let’s face it; mostly you get pretty archetypal characters (the grumpy girl, the shy girl, the hero, ect) without a lot of depth. So I watched Rebuild with pretty high expectations. And…I thought it was pretty good. It was very entertaining and I was on my seat the whole time (especially with the second movie, LOVED the giant alien/robot fights!) The animation was also eye-candy and you really feel like you’re entering a new world. This alone warrants the movie a 10-point rating. However, as I was expecting some wacked out people and it just didn’t deliver. I felt that the characters were pretty cookie cutter and were very similar to other characters I have seen. For example, when Asuka makes her appearance, all I could think of was that she could be the perfect twin for Taiga from Toradora! I kept waiting for the characters psychological problems to show—at one point the unemotional Rei takes out a knife and I thought—“oh noes, she’s a cutter! She gotten take her repressed emotions out on herself in attempt to feel something—even if its pain!” But no, apparently she wasn’t repressed—she just wanted to cook something. That is kind of a snore. Plus I thought the whole cooking plotline was pretty silly because I have tutored fourteen year-olds and they really aren’t that thoughtful in their relationships. If Asuka really wanted to show Shinji that she liked him, it would have been more believable if she would have given him a favorite C.D. or something (or more likely, just revved up the teasing. Girls do this more often than you think). But don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie and even showed to a friend. It is a fun and exciting watch but I didn’t find it very deep or thought provoking like I expected. However…because I liked the action sequences in the movie so much I decided to give the original series and End of Eva a try. Wow. I could write an essay about how screwed up these kids are (maybe even several). However, the original series has some the best (if not THE BEST) characterization I have ever watched in an anime, especially for Shinji and Asuka. The characters are troubled, painful sad, yet oddly likable at the same time. It’s such a shame that the director felt it necessary to simplify these complex characters in order to attract a wider audience. In all my media consumption (I actually don’t watch that much anime, but I read a ton of novels) I have never run across so beautifully flawed of characters as Shinji and Asuka. The only character that I liked better in Rebuild was Rei (but this is really only for the shameful reason that I found her to be cuter in the new movies :D I will admit that the Rebuild movies have a more streamlined storyline and WAY better animation but if you crave deep characters and complex (if painfully sad) character interactions than the original (plus End of Eva) wins hands down!

In most cases I have difficulty with adapations or remakes of things that I love. When you're a diehard fan of the original, a weak spin-off that doesn't do it any justice seems like a painful, personal insult. Despite my initial trepidation, I decided to risk possible dissapointment and watch the rebuilds. I have not regretted it for a single moment. Evangelion 2.22 was mindblowingly amazing. The animation quality is superb, with upgrades to the style and aesthetic feel of the show both subtle and extreme. The characters stay true to their complicated personalities and motives, and the new characters that are added seem interesting and pertinent. Unlike Evangelion: 1.0, which followed the storyline of NGE very closely, 2.0 diverges completely. I like to say that 1.0 stands next to the original NGE story, while 2.0 waves goodbye from across the room before strapping on rocket boots and blasting off into space. The plot moves so quickly and changes so drastically that I have no idea where it's going to go, but I know that I can't wait to find out. As for action, the fight scenes are simply awesome. Dramatic, bestial, vicious and brutal. My only issue with 2.0 is the soundtrack. While some of the pieces are lovely and work very well, there are a few choices that I just can't agree with. I particularly dislike the vocals. I understand that it's supposed to emphasize the visceral impact of a situation when juxtaposed with light, innocent music, but it just didn't work for me. Instead of emphasizing, it actually subtracted from the scenes. Basically I have one nitpick amongst a mountain of praise for this rebuild. I thoroughly recommend Evangelion 2.0 to absolutely everybody... even the people who may be mentally and emotionally scarred by it.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. Yes, the second movie, I want to make something clear through this movie so that we can guess how the story will be in the last two movies that I want to watch today and to finish the work. This movie in particular jumped to. The events of the tempo is completely different from the main story. You can also see that the pace has become somewhat faster, this is something expected from the movie. The first difference or change that I saw in this movie is the character of the characters in the story, it changed. We will start with Misato. I felt that Misato’s character, who was somewhat exploitative, became more tolerant than both Shinji and Dr. Akagi. You can also see that she was friendly in some scenes from Kaji, even the restaurant shot suggests that. The second thing is the way the characters think. I saw and was certain that most of the characters in the movie are completely different from what we knew them to be. There is a difference between deep thinking and the depth of the previous characters to a purely emotional difference. Most of the characters in the movie have become very emotional, even Shinji's father, who has become somewhat concerned with how his son feels about Shinji's decision not to drive the robot again. He understood that his son felt that his son was a burden on him and resorted to self-compassion. Asuka's character also became devoted to Shinji, and her point of view about people and her interaction with him changed. As we saw in the series, Rei's feelings towards Shinji were clearer in the story, and this is something we were sure of, even with the assumption that Asuka's character was tsundere at the beginning of the series, as we expected from him. Additional characters in the work, the character of the girl and Kaoru, appear earlier because the story is about to end after the movie. The girl with glasses is familiar to some, but she is the fifth child who should have led moment 4, as mentioned in the series that she and her moment disappeared in Europe. I think it was in the monologue, but her part was cut from the story. Finally, I want to say that if there is someone reading this review, I would like to know their opinion of me (if there is actually someone). Anyway, I will watch the third and last movie, and after that I will talk more about the alternate ending of the story and the reconstruction of its events. More more... Personally, the first and second films, what can I say, built a story in a more appropriate way. We learned from this film the emotional and kind side of the characters in the story, such as Ayane Rei and Shinji Ikari, and even a little bit of Shinji's father, whose plan we knew from the first film, but the décor, reason, and how Shinji's mother died is something strange, wonderful, and very enjoyable. The rest of the film is 3.0, and the last one is 3.0 + 1.0, which will be the end and conclusion of the second work. I will watch both films today to finish the story. A wonderful film 9/10 9-10/4/2025

~~MINOR SPOILERS~~ 2.0 You can (not) Advance is where the “Rebuild” in the Rebuild Franchise takes place. 1.0 followed the original story, meanwhile 2.0 does the same as well as adding in new elements. I will admit, the first time I watched it the dramatic turn of events had me choking on my own breath. That being said, it was a beautiful turn of events, a welcomed one. This is without a doubt my favorite anime movie of all time. Cinematography, soundtrack, animation, everything is a perfect 10/10. Most people did not welcome the addition of the new pilot Mari Makinami Illustrious. Those same haters complain that she is just fan service and add no importance to the plot. What those haters don’t realize is how much Mari does for the story. She is very talented, and an almost perfect counterpart to Asuka as a pilot. They both work extremely well together, and she has her own set of unique personality traits. By “working together” I mean that they are both exceptional when piloting the Evas. If you look back to the times Asuka pilots alongside Shinji or Rei, there will only be a handful of moments when things were out well. Asuka’s rough tsundere nature always gets in the way, as all she does most of the time is bitch, complain, and cry about how things didn’t go her way. With the introduction of Mari, that changes, and I really liked this new aspect on Asuka as a character as well. The final scene in which Rei sacrificed herself made me super emotional, and it is my favorite animated scene of all time. Everything about it, especially the music, brings tears to my eyes every time. With the upcoming release of 3.0+1.0 on August 13, 2021, I leave my mark here. I cannot wait to see how this rebuild franchise ends.

Again, also amazing at adapting the original material, but towards the end it's not the same as the manga (NOT SPOILING ANYTHING) but it's not the original series' ending. Again, really good characters with their voices, the visuals look even nicer than 1.0's and it also has a really good soundtrack. This one's a lot more exciting to watch in my opinion due to the action scenes being more abundant and expressive compared to the last one. Like I said, it's amazing, dub and sub are both good. Had a good time with it when I watched. Blu-Rays for these are quite expensive though for some reason (at least where I picked them up), but the bonus feature stuff on them was also really good for this one to look through.

One can only fit so much plot and character development in 2 hours, so I don't blame the movie too much for its inferiority to the original series. Overall art was okay, but the small details like when Katsuragi freezes for 3 seconds while the same mouth animation is stuck on repeat steals from the experience. Sound was alright, i guess. alot of standard sound effects, but the voice acting was great! As for characters, the obvious sore thumb is Mari, given her lack of introduction and suddenly her being the MVP by "kidnapping" shinji from his safe place. feels like a shoehorn. I liked seeing a more human Rei though. The amount of fanservice is questionable at best, and i truly hope there will be less of it in 3.0. To sum it up: I would enjoy this movie more if i hadn't already watched NGE. still, worth my time and probably yours too

2.22 was a much better movie than 1.11 was to me. It diverts from the plot of the series with the introduction of two new characters, Asuka Langley Shikinami (based on Asuka Langley Soryu from the show) and Mari Illustrious Makinami. The animation is just gorgeous, the plot is compelling, and the end of the movie really makes you anticipate for Evangelion: 3.0.

I felt like watching Evangelion for the first time. Bizarre. It felt weird at first, not bad, just weird, too much slice of life, really wholesome actually, in the last part of the movie you remember it's Evangelion. Absolutely perfect. Traits and aspects of the main story are changed, some characters roles and plots are switched or slightly ignored, not bad though, it actually fits really well. Although you should watch the original anime, it really passes a similar feeling of the last part. A fun and engaging movie for old Evangelion fans, also a whole new experience. Would watch again. Loved it.

Of course, I judge this film, like the previous one, through the prism of the original series. Departing from the main series' plot is a cool idea, but the film can't seem to break away from it at certain points, e.g. the scene of Rei's suicidal charge in Unit 0 is practically unchanged up to a certain point. That's why I feel that, on the one hand, we have an alternate timeline, but on the other, I feel like it's simply a more enriched/modified plot of the first seriers. I'd prefer if the directors responded on one conception. The main characters' personalities have been significantly modified. Rei seems less coldly clone-like, and Shinji is slightly more decisive. Asuka's character has changed the most, as she casually states several times that she wants to act alone. ADDITIONALLY, we don't have a thread involving Asuka's infatuation with KAJI, which, in my opinion, had a very interesting impact on Asuka's personality in the original series, i mean it was a incredibly important thread in original series. Instead, we have the mysterious Mari with unclear motivations and the slight sexualization of Asuka (which is funny after they did the same with Rei in the previous film). These are definitely weak elements that lower the overall rating. Politics, Vatican treaty etc. also don't fit Evangelion in my opinion. The ending, the watermelon scene, was definitely a big plus. The fight scenes were also fantastic, apart from the fight with the seventh angel, which was macabrely simplified (it's clear they ran out of ideas). The music is great (the fact that they used Komm Susser Tod in different circumstances is brilliant), the graphics lack the atmosphere of the original series, but it works at a decent level.

I just love Evangelion—there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s a work so full of personality and power that it gets to me in any of its forms. I love its style, I love its art and visual direction. I love its soundtrack; I love its epic female choirs that give me chills during a battle scene. I love its mythology, its world and its rules. I love the way it portrays its society, the movement of the masses, the bureaucratic and urban progression. I love how it deals with sex and adolescence. Parenthood. Friendship and love. It’s a work with such a perfect foundation in its details that it’s hard to create anything around it and ruin what makes it what it is. I hope this never changes over the years. I hope Evangelion will always be Evangelion.

Evangelion 2.22 was a huge step up from 1.11 in the fact that now the Rebuilds have established they're doing their own thing moving forward. Altering or straight up changing the narrative. Characters don't follow their paths in the original series and even some new characters are present. With established expectations of following a somewhat similar story as the original, that is immediately out of the way as the opening scene is entirely original to this movie. The decisions characters make despite being different than the original, still feels as organic and progressive to the characters and plot as the original. Adding in some scenes to really further your immersion in the world, and genuinely make you care for the entire cast of characters, not being reliant on the original to do that for them. By the end of the movie, you care about everyone, not just Shinji. The movie also had me surprised with how much they showed, as I felt like the movie was going to end on 2-3 separate occasions. The drama is even better than its counterpart scenes in the original and I was blown away by the ending of this movie. Truly another heart wrenching watch in the lineup of Evangelion.

this is one of the best tv shows i have aver watched and that i will ever watch the artistic talent and creative skill it took to create something so amazing is practically impossible it was a one in a thousand chance that a franchise so constantly good exists. each character is written with a mastery of writing skill making them all entertaining and memorable. the story is the hard sci-fi all anime fans are looking for in the sea of shit that is the seasonal releases now beautifully built and crafted so that nothing is given to you and at the same time everything is given to you which is kept up across 26 episodes 6 films and 14 volumes. in conclusion evangelion: 2.0 you can (not) advance is a high 10/10.

Well, well, well, it seems like we have an anime fan here. Let me tell you about my thoughts on the popular anime movie, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. First off, the story is a step up from the previous installment, with the introduction of new characters and the development of the existing ones. The plot is engaging and keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. The theme of self-discovery and acceptance is also well portrayed throughout the film. Speaking of characters, the protagonist Shinji Ikari continues to be the focal point of the story, but his character development in this movie is particularly notable. The new characters, such as Mari Illustrious Makinami, add a fresh perspective to the story and provide some great moments of action and drama. The music in this anime movie is truly a standout, with the famous song "Tsubasa wo Kudasai" being a highlight. It sets the mood perfectly for the emotional scenes and elevates the overall experience for the viewers. As for my enjoyment experience, I have to say it was great. The animation and visuals were stunning, and the action sequences were nothing short of epic. The emotional moments also hit hard, leaving a lasting impact on the audience. Overall, 8.3/10. I would definitely recommend this anime movie to anyone looking for a thrilling and emotional ride.

Freedom is an illusion. All you will lose is the emotion of pride. To be dominated by me is not as bad for human pride as to be dominated by others of your species. I watched Hideaki Anno’s Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance on August 8, on Amazon Prime Video, and wow. This is an absolute masterpiece. Continuing the storyline from 1.11., the film focuses on Shinji Ikari, and also deals with the arrival of a fiery redhead German pilot named Asuka Shikinami Langley, along with the emergence of burgeoning new threats and stronger Angels. There is also the emergence of a mysterious, eccentric British pilot named Mari Illustrious Makinami, who appears in Tokyo-3, after a cataclysmic event involving EVA Unit 05 that is shown in the opening sequence of the film. The casting of the English dub is great, such as Deneen Melody as the offbeat Mari, adding humor to her performance, along with the iconic Spike Spencer returning to voice Shinji Ikari. Hideaki Anno further forms the Rebuilds into its own narrative with this film, separate from the storyline of the original anime, whilst containing some elements from the original series. Anno also does something that wasn’t quite shown as much in the original series: Showcasing the normal daily life in Tokyo-3, along with one sequence featuring The Children (along with Toji and Kensuke) attending a trip to a sea-life sanctuary. When it comes to the animation, there are amazing fluid movements of the EVAs in the battle sequences, along with some gorgeous sequences of the city of Tokyo-III, thanks to Anno’s use of a higher budget and newer technology. However, while this film does have some lighter moments (at times being a little lighter than the original anime), it reaches a disturbing level in one particular scene that is shocking, even for Evangelion. This is a particularly gruesome sequence towards the end of the second act that is quite bloody and saying it’s grisly would be an understatement. It is downright horrifying. It doesn’t help matters at all, as a piece featuring the vocals of a children’s choir plays in the background. It is the textbook definition of disturbing dissonance. Evangelion: 2.22 takes the original source material of the anime and goes for a completely different turn from the original story, whilst still retaining its soul. With gorgeous animation, great music, and the brilliant mind of Hideaki Anno crafting the story, it is easily the best film of the Rebuilds so far, and I will even go as far to say that it is one of the best films of the 2000s.

the rebuilds have been better than what I was expecting, the animation is great, the battle scenes are as amazing to watch as in the original series and in The End of Evangelion. Misato showed to be really important to Shinji's character, in some especific scenes especially. Shinji and Rei also had plenty of significant scenes, which many people might see as romantic love... but as someone that has already watched Neon Genesis Evangelion and The End of Evangelion the reason behind these scenes is already cleared up, but that doesn't matter. Soundtrack was amazing just as in the first rebuild, on the final scenes, there was a really dramatic and tuff battle going on, and along with it, a almost bizzare song playing in the background, like a song for little kids. It's always interesting to pay attention to the evangelion OST, it's always amazing. Great movie, did not disappoint.

Here the thing start to desviate to the original series, unlike the firts movie that followed around the firts six episodes of the old one in this case we actually can see the incorporation of a new character as well to differents events that take place all that together with some changes in the characters (althought at his core are all remaining the same kind of essence that the original had). Asuka in this case for example we can see in less and big degree an change in her but that it might be also due to the fact that this movie last around almost two hours so they had to fit many of her development in that time, unlike others characters like ikari or rei that had more screen-time to expand on them counting the firts one and this also (that allows them to not put so much presure or i should say rush in their respective rol) , that could be one of the reason that it might felt a little fast peaced in that aspect how was handled some thiings with asuka. Though i have to say that even then doesnt affect the quality and overall experience of the movie just because in the big scheme of the plot in general was pretty satisfying how everyhting was handle and taking care, it could at the beggining felt a little upseting the aforementioned (depending of the person of course) but as you move forward in the movie you just can appreciate how was the movie hold so well and make justice what the previous one was (and the oriignal in which was inspirated). I have to say that maybe in this one the situations and hardships that ikari goes though it might felt a little more symphatetic in how was portrayed to those whinning in how ikiri always was depressed or crying in the original one (althought i have to say that it was more than justifiyed based in what he had to deal) to those people it might be more clear and comprensive the way that was showed in this movie (i said the same for the firts movie but i wanted to aclare that again hehe). Rei was also really nice developed until now and im pleasing to say that every single character eventhe ones with some cons in how might feel in some aspects rushed to reach some events were really enjoyble and the the movies untill now hold what it made the original evangelion what its was. The music its so freaking awesome and the last track used in those last minutes of the movie were EPIC and beautiful an really compelling ost that has so many touching pieces i dare to say that even much more that in the firts one, the animation it look clean as fuck and of course even though its an combination of 2d and 3d in certain scenes, the tradional animated ones are just mesmerazing that together with outanding background just makes you inmersse completly in the story , the quality in this aspects just does nothing else more than getting better. As far after being watched two of this new adaptations i dont know why but i feel that the plot in general and character has like more sense and cohesion with what the story its narrating i mean hold the same values and vibes that the original had but in this ones i feel more kind of undertandable and better narrated (it might be my impression i dont know). I have to say i leave falled in loved with this second movie so much more than the firts one, i mean i can undertand that in this new installment firts they had to set the bases to what it would gonna end up being this new story using as foundation the same origins serving as inspiration the firts of episodes of the old one for the firts movie, but in this one takes us to an new route that we have no seen and it had been done so well that just leaves me with deasires of wanting to know how its gonna to continue. The bad points that i could mentione are the ones of the rushing in some events and some fast peaced development or lack of it to some secondary characters that in the original where more presnets, but in general it wasnt really serious that could detracting of actually enjoy and like me make you fall in love with the movie, just because overall was greatly done. RESUME This second part its more of the same but even better , sure it could have his cons but even if i dont dare to say its an masterpiece , to say the least its an great movie to die-hard fans of the original series and if you liked the previous one, this one doesnt gonna defraud you. I reccomend it 100% i ended up loving it and this new route that take its refreshing and well made , its just gonna leaving you with desires of more.

Reimagining of episodes 8-19 (-10/11/13/16) of the original series that changed many things mostly for the better. Shinji exhibits actual development and character growth here and his final tantrum is handled much better, even though I would have likely preferred it if they skipped that part altogether. Asuka seems more annoying, lacks her previous relationship with Kaji and they skipped over her psycho-trauma to the benefit of the character. Much more characterization and character/relationship building in this than the previous movie. Somewhat at the expense of Misato and Kaji, who seem to get less screen time overall. "Interesting" introduction for the new character Mari and lol at her breasts starting to vibrate near the end. The love triangle and competition between Rei and Asuka turned out well enough, but doesn't lead to anything. Also thankfully still largely free of pseudo-philosophy, but getting a bit silly nonetheless near the end.

(2.22) So instead of functioning as a rehash like the previous film did, this film instead is a total revision, rewrite, and even overhaul of the source material. So while it does contain much of what already exists in the show, instead 2.22 approaches it’s preexisting material by condensing it and reapplying the core critical points of the source narrative and allowing for more clarity within its addressal of issues such as characterisation. This all results in what very much feels like Hideaki Anno looking back upon his magnum opus and realising how he could clean it up. Now I will admit that this film did catch me off guard as I couldn’t fall back onto the original series allowing form take to better understand that through these films (as was offered by the previous instalment), but after soon realising I took in to this different approach and was surprised at what it had to offer. But that’s not to say that it’s not entirely original; because when checked back with not only the series and the previous film, 2.22 feels like an entirely different beast. From not only its narrative reconstruction (and for that sake it’s remake of classic scenes) but also from its new character (for better or for worse) and new approach to the plot fundamentals of Evangelion. From brand new scenes to brand new approaches to character, 2.22 really does brandish its title of ‘Rebuild’, offering up fans and series revisiters an approach that itself is concise and free from much of the convoluted confusion that plagued the original series. Another standout point will easily be the amazing animation and soundtrack, which are some standouts of the film and the one before. Eitherway, this instalment took me by surprise and I’m interested to see the shift to complete originality that will occur with number three

This is the first rebuild film to heavily diverge from the original series through its events as well as cast of characters. This film further plays with the idea that all of this is actually a sequel to the series and almost like a chance of redemption for these characters. Each character seems to be more invested in their personal relationships with each other and properly expresses their mental state rather than bottling it entirely in. There was a noticeable downgrade in terms of how CGI was blended with animation as opposed to the previous film, it had some scenes with the Eva's where it really took me out of it but besides that everything else still looked great. The soundtrack is also still using some tracks from the series as well as some newly composed ones that fit quite well with whatever scene they are in. Overall this film has definitely differentiated itself from the original series and is proving to elevate the story to new heights
