Violet Evergarden: The Movie

Sometimes a closed box is more interesting than an open one. A well executed piece with a strong B story and solid yet minor narration plot from a different perspective. All the characters you know are here. However, the ending of the film, and therefore the story as a whole, flops terribly. It is a punch to the narrative, and the growth violet has gone through over the series. It's jarring, flies in the face of good storytelling, and is borderline problematic. If bad endings ruin something for you, stay away. It was a bold choice, but IMO completely mishandled and rushed. Overall enjoyable otherwise.

What an absolute disgrace This movie throws away absolutely everything that made Violet beautiful. The entire season 1 was about Violet developing herself, only for in the for everything to be in vain Her obsession with Major who hardly did anything to achieve that grew to the point of being annoying She was supposed to have been developed but if anything, this was a regression She simply threw away all the bonds which she had build and developed her to live on an island alone with a weird man who was old enough to be her father There relationship was supposed to resemble that of a father and daughter, not romantic. Violet was much much younger than him And oh well, let's not forget about the pointless Yuris and the spoiled girl nonsense who contributed absolutely nothing. Overall, an exceedingly crap movie that destroyed everything I loved about the show and the fact that so many ppl like this crap saddens me to no end Ppl really will like literally anything as long it tries to be a tearjerker Probably why they decided to not a gaf and made this movie. Disappointing..

I cried. Certainly. Witnessing such a love, how could I hold back my tear? Violet Evergarden the Television is one that made me do something like that, and for better or worse, the letters sent to the future self of someone is one of the most remarkable moments in anime history. No need to cry for silly plastic memories, you know? Anyway, let's get into the work for real. The Opening & The Point of View of Those Living I really like the idea of bringing those side characters onto the show. Violet Evergarden told the story within, with or behind those letters, and the opening of the movie did stay true to its nature. The purpose of letters is not only to communicate, but also to connect people, and how great that the living people were connected with those gone before through the memories laid within those pages. Even though the main storyline did got interrupted with what happened in that present, it was not that bad to significantly impact the enjoyment. What a pleasure to be able to see how people got connected, and what a creative way to end what had been started. Nevertheless, the point of view of the living people should have only been the opening and the conclusion of the work, instead of disrupting the progress of its major content. The Main Events I’ve always had myself satisfied with how things concluded in the TV series. The end there brought wishful and bright colours to the work, and there was that hopeful feeling that Violet Evergarden would definitely move on, in order to find her happiness, as well as you-know-what-she-is-seeking-for. However, the movie discarded them all. Once again, the disturbance was stirred up. Gilbert Bougainvillea’s survival was nothing strange, as it was shown in the original work. Nonetheless, as the prequel had managed to draw an even better final ceremony, while the special episode resonated the final notes of Let It Be, there was no need to bring him back to life. Two miracles in the same place just dissonate themselves, but well, the execution could salvage it… Hell no, as Gilbert Bougainvillea played an important part in this work, he should have had more screen time, not in the recollection of others, but for his actual actions, thoughts, as well as his resolution. I couldn’t see any clear development from the character, but let’s return to it later. The reenactment of a great episode from the TV series was certainly overshadowed by the opening and therefore became filler. Time, guys, for Major Bougainvillea. In cocnclusion, the movie should have been more focused on Gilbert Bougainvillea, since Violet Evergarden had shown her potential in the TV series and her necessity in the movie was only to discover the fact. The Characters Gilbert Bougainvillea was also a victim of war. That was certainly a fact and explained the reason behind his actions. However, I always respect how Captain Ben Affleck in Pearl Habour had the will to apologise his loved one, Kate Beckinsale, for having left her, for having put her into sorrow, and spoke out how she had been his urge of surviving, as well as his resolution to repay her and his best friend, also a comrade in arms. That is to say, our Major Bougainvillea here was just a loser, and it ascertained what follows. She is out of your league, Former Major. Executive Squad, ready. Aim. Fire. As for what happened to Violet Evergarden, isn’t it a pain to see her once again agonise, and isn’t it a shame that she had to endure it for the sake of the mere like Dear Sir Major there? He was the first to show her affection, but certainly not the worthy one for hers. She deserved more for what she had been through. That’s why I have to say the movie was just something totally unnecessary, since the TV version had worked out an absolute satisfying epilogue for the greater good. Isn’t it a pity then? The Sounding and The Art It is too repetitive to say, but in short, the same staff behind the stage. There are reasons explaining why the movie was considered a success, but to me, the scriptwriter gave off the vibe of Makoto Shinkai in disguise. It was not that bad, but kinda stretching too far from what had previously been. Not approved. Sometimes love just has to die. Alternative Conclusion: I now wish they had instead used the original end of the novel in the movie. Even though it would be contradicting to the pacifist Violet Evergarden had become, at least Major Bougainvillea could really do something, and there would be more commotion than what was actually done.

This movie marks the end of the series Violet Evergarden. A tragic story about a young woman brought into the military, trained to become an emotionless killing machine on the battlefield and eventually became an employee of a letter-writing company. Throughout her time as an employee, she had written many letters and sought out the meaning of the few words a person she loved left behind. Along the way, she learned empathy and made a lot of new friends, affiliates, and people who cared for her. The best series I've ever watched in my entire life and the first anime I reviewed on MAL. Despite the "good anime never gets an actual ending" rule, I waited. And now here we are. This movie surpassed my expectations in many ways I couldn't imagine. Remember episode 10? Imagine that but 2 hours. Maybe even better. If I were to describe the art, sound, character, story and other things then this review would probably be longer than a PhD thesis, so I won't. But it's all a masterpiece and that many words aren't necessary. So with that said, the only thing I could possibly say now would be, "Thank you. Thank you for everything." Again, truly, thank you for everything. Kyotoanimation. Violet Evergarden. From the beginning to the end and from the bottom of my heart, these special feelings I am feeling right now was from you and I'm more than happy to be able to feel such emotions. I'll be continuing on my journey, watching more anime and hopefully find something that may be as good or even better than this. Agent_Redacted, a casual anime watcher and a person who reviews what he watches sometimes for fun will now take his leave. Until next time.

After the devastating tragedy for Kyoto Animation in 2019, seeing this movie as their big comeback is truly an inspiration but felt extremely bittersweet. One of my favorite production studios, hearing about the news was devastating so upon the announcement of this film I was extremely hopeful but also apprehensive for the quality and content of the film after so much of the staff was gone. My worries were proven to be for naught because the movie was everything I had hoped for it to be and even further exceeded my expectations. Kyoani has always been my favorite anime studio because of their attention to detail, fair treatment of workers, and impeccable quality and sound design. Each work is meticulously crafted to perfection and you can physical feel all the hard work that is poured into each and every frame. This Violet Evergarden sequel movie and finale is no exception, and I was in awe of the production quality throughout the entire duration (when I could see the screen, that is). Amazing artwork, breathtaking visuals, perfect score and incredibly nuanced and well voice acted characters made this movie a masterpiece in my eyes. The movie itself was full of themes of tragedy and moving on, as well as remembering the past but learning to focus on the present. It presented life to be a precious thing that should not be taken for granted. Thinking about these motifs in the context of the Kyoani tragedy was heartbreaking but also beautiful. Me and everyone else in the theater was blown away until we were all a sobbing wreck, and I eagerly look forward to future works by Kyoani.

Violet Evergarden, the entire series did not disappoint at all. One hell of a ride that was, the emotional rollercoaster. TBH wasnt a rollercoaster. More of a freefall. Cuz im a cheap fuck, i watched the camrip versions, which def have a lower quality, and i will be rewatching it when the actual thing gets pirated. teehee. (not that i disrespect the people who made it, its just cuz i dont have money) 1. Soundtrack. As a musician, soundtrack has always been a main part where I judge any show on, and the orchestral score of Violet Evergarden sent shivers down my spine. The melody and harmony's blend was perfect, truly. listen to it to know. And the use of the ED for the tv series at the end was just the icing on the cake. 2. Animation. Nothing much to say here. Top notch. 3. Story. I shall minimize. spoilers, but this story was very well constructed, although i would have made a slight different change about a particular character's fate, but that choice was the reason why this movie even existed, so i wont complain. SPOILER TERRITORY The movie starts as a direct callback to Episode 10. Im just gonna say this, dont wanna spoil anything else. Violet's story in the movie starts again, very episode 10 esque, as her client was in a very similar position. and then the rest of the plot of the movie unfolds from there. Spoiler over. Didn't cry, but watching this gave me the strongest amount of emotion I ever felt in the past year or so. Violet Evergarden as a series is a modern masterpiece in my opinion, and is a series that I believe everybody should watch at least once. Just a fun thing I thought I'd add. This show got me into fountain pens, and I've dumped more than 100 dollars on that hobby. Still a novice, have bout 2 pens in my collection.

First of all, thank you KyoAni for giving out such masterpiece despite suffering through a horrific incident. This movie without a doubt touch the bottom of my heart. It was my first time crying like a baby in movie theater. The movie really did what the series do best: convey the character emotions to the viewers through letter. The movie build up the emotion throughout the whole main event and let it burst out in the end. It's not the first time I saw move with this motif but KyoAni really did nail the execution. The art and sound is as marvelous as the previous movie and the series. The character development play a really huge role in this movie. KyoAni really know how to develop the character emotions and refine them to its best. For my personal view, I really really love this movie, everything about it is beautiful. The resonance from it still rang inside me when I wrote this review. A fantastic movie, thank you again KyoAni. Looking forward to seeing more masterpieces like this one.

this film is a continuation of a tv show that I held dearly in my heart, to see it ruined I just had to vent about my frustration for this film. so we had violet coming to terms with the major's "death" at the end of the tv show, just for the movie to regress everything back in terms of violet's development and resolution to serve a contrived romantic plot that is without a doubt problematic at best. only good thing about this movie (kyoani's strength) is its realistic(?) artstyle, superb animation and voice acting, which had the least of my attention tbh when this film features a pedophile as the main lead. I was surprised at the overwhelming positive responses this film had despite its not only problematic values but also its lackluster continuation for its female lead's character development that was tossed aside for such a shithole of a story. upon finishing this film, I was beyond disappointed and annoyed at how so many just brush aside its clearly problematic relationship when it is in fact the face of this film. i love the tv show but this movie aint canon in my heart and i wish that pedophile woulda stayed dead 💔 1/10

I love this anime! Words can't describe all the emotions I got from this. It's way too more that i learnt through for life. Taught me to control emotions and work towards life deeds. Like ghibli movie's saying that love is actually two person inspiring each other to work and letting them live life knowing how hard life is... Similarly here the protagonists are. This anime showcases all of the quality that a slice of life genre could have. It made heart melt and warm. It teaches you how to regulate your feelings and how long to be disciplined for life line. All of the characters shows pretty good progression. Story plots are amazing with the letter's fonts. Graphical edition is awesome. It's very much pleasing to eyes. Every episode, ova, special movie everything is absolutely lovely. Must watch!

So i first watched the violet evergarden series and kind of loved it with how good it's animation, music and storyline was. So my expectations for this movie were very high but i ended up disappointed. When you make a canon movie about an anime, it is supposed to show a new and a different arc, with interesting plotline but violet evergarden does almost nothing new in the movie. Same violet writes a letter for a dying person and repeats like the same plot for 10th time. The character development of violet was pretty less even though other characters had a significant development during the time skip. The whole story felt so repetitive that i had to skip some parts cause they felt so boring that i even was about to sleep while watching it. Kyotoani did a great job with the animation and music again but the story lacked so bad that it didn't feel worth at all. Then comes is the so called plot twist in the end which made me so infuriated. Did the writers forget what this story implied or were they just lazy to think up something new? All this story stood for was getting over you lost ones and moving on by looking the bright future in front but no, lets add something that is just opposite of what we felt and learnt from the series. It just ain't the right way. It might have people emotional cause no one thought about the series, they just watched it without thinking about anything. She was supposed to learn what 'love' means without her love and not by 'making his love appear outta nowhere' and making the plot of the series pointless. Very very big disappointment.

The movie has great animation and is truly beautiful, the sidestory of the little boy really gets to you with how touching and heavy it is, but i personally did not enjoy the final outcome of the major history. It was a lackluster conclusion to Violet's character and in my opinion it set back her growth and maturation. Unfortunately it's tough to make this review/critic without going on spoils. But let's just say that this movie tries to re-write one of it's main plots and it feels really lazy and unnecessary. To the point of feeling like i spent my time attaching me to the original anime story, for nothing.

"I love you" Violet Evergarden is a series that I've been loving since the day I watched it. I really liked seeing her embark on a journey as a Doll, helping people figuring out their emotions that later shall be put into an exquisite letter, whilst figuring out her own emotions and her own meaning of love. I loved it, and was anticipating for this movie, and I wasn't disappointed. We were first greeted by Daisy, who learns about Violet's existence through her grandmother's letters, through Ann's letters. Daisy then embarks on a journey, a sort of pilgrimage, on getting to know Violet's disappearance after quitting her job as a Doll in Leidenschaftlich, and we were accompanying her. Throughout Daisy's journey on learning about Violet, we get to know Violet's story and Yulith's story. Stories about staying truthful to one's emotions, keeping promises, and about love. It's honestly staggering how KyoAni managed to tie in these stories together, and create such a big and wonderful narrative. Paired with KyoAni's colorful, complex, and beautiful art and amazing sound design, I was in for an enchanting emotional rollercoaster. Overall, this movie was an amazing close to what was an already amazing series. I hope, after seeing Violet's journey of finding and expressing the meaning of love, we can all live by these words: "I love you" 「あいしてる」

I can't express in words how this movie was so breathtaking and captivating. The art, the character, the story, the music, and more all played a wonderful part and it all made sense. I can't tell you the number of times the movie moved me to tears. I'm honestly still a little tearful as I write this. I am giving this 10/10 for being able to convey emotion and the struggles on how it is to convey it at times. I give it a 10/10 because at times I feel as though my empathy for others has lessened over some time, I felt rather numb as I went about my life. This movie in a way has helped me feel that emotion and feel it so strongly, I'm glad I had the opportunity to watch it and I strongly encourage that you watch it too. It's worth it, I promise.

A satisfying ending to the anime series, a timely reminder of our human connections, and homage to the deceased animators from KyoAni's arson attack. This probably isn't an objective review. It's hard to separate the art from the artist given the deeply tragic events at Kyoto Animation. This movie consisted of the final personal contributions from the various animators that died in the arson attack -- creators and contributors of many notable works including Violet Evergarden, Haruhi Suzumiya and A Silent Voice. The themes of love, loss, longing and reunion are ever present in this masterpiece. The movie itself was a recap of beloved cast members in the TV series. The story was clever, tying in three separate stories with character growth and emotional catharsis for everyone. All of this, while emphasizing human connections through human scribes/ghostwriters (Dolls) and a physical medium (paper letters!) despite rapid advances in literacy and technology. It's a fascinating plot chock-full of nostalgia that acknowledges the short-lived nature of the doll ghostwriting industry, but also celebrates their importance to our humanity, especially in a post-war rebuilding effort. It's especially poignant, because as I write this, it's 2026 with the prevalence of electronic communication and AI tools. These are tools that can do copywriting/ghostwriting in fractions of a second, interpolating/extrapolating/predicting our words based on statistical analysis. It makes the audience wonder if we've lost something along the way. Whether we've traded in our human reflective process of deep thinking as we struggle to convey our intent, all for the sake of convenience. If anything, this is a movie that has become increasingly timeless.

The cast of Violet Evergarden: the movie spend roughly twenty-five percent of the film's runtime crying. Which is good for them, given that there's a lot going on and a lot to be upset/happy/overwhelmed about, and good for us, because KyoAni animates some ridiculously beautiful tears. Nonetheless, this is something you should keep in mind going forward. There are three narratives running at the same time in this film. We have the framing device-narrative, which makes use of a character with a one-time appearance in the original tv series; we have the narrative that follows one of Violet's clients; and then we have whatever is going on with Gilbert, who has come back from the dead (this is shown in the trailer so don't come after me). There are three narratives running in this film and they're all pretty sad. The framing device story and the girl it follows is so far removed from the main cast of the show (she's a returnee from one of the episodic stories in the anime) that despite what it accomplishes at the end, I fail to see why it took up as much time and space as it did. On the other hand, Violet's client of the day and his circumstances are textbook Violet Evergarden. She even acknowledges herself in the film that she has received a similar request before, whose trajectory we already saw unfold in the anime in full technicolor glory. It hits the same emotional note that almost all of the show's episodes have up until now, which, if you can guess, involve clear communication, treasuring your loved ones, and crying a lot, all of which are valid points, but have been hit so many times by now that it left me feeling like I'd just drank a lot of water and then gone for a run and then drank some more. Like: why'd I drink all this water. Who gave this to me? Why is there so much damn water in this house??? All of which is to say that if you've seen the PV and read the synopsis you know what you're here for and you're going to get it, but you're also going to get a bunch of other stuff which takes up roughly a third to half of the film's runtime and serves to add very little in terms of texture, flavor, or depth. What I mean is: the mouthfeel is disappointing. The above paragraphs are my thoughts on the story. As for everything else- KyoAni films are well-known for being beautiful to the point of unhinging jaws and breaking windows, and this is no exception. The level of attention paid to the smallest of actions like pulling a heavy door shut, shuffling one's feet nervously, or inserting a key into a keyhole immerses, or should I say quite literally submerges the viewer in Violet's world. It's incredible and fantastical and something I think anyone who appreciates 1) Things and 2) Liquid Things should see at least once. The use of color and lighting were incredibly evocative as well, with subdued grays being contrasted with the blue of the sky, the vivid colors of Leiden, and so on. This is one hell of a film. It's an audiovisual achievement. The soundtrack speaks to that as well, with new tracks being introduced which add a layer of emotion which I can only describe as 'crunchy'. It's a wonderful soundtrack. Even if you don't watch the film, you should look it up somewhere and give it a listen. Anyway, I'm a fan of all of the recurring characters. I think Hodgins is a funny dad figure and Benedict's heels are kickass. Above all, Violet's growth throughout the series is astronomical and a feat of voice-acting, writing, and animation, and she's a strong protagonist who carries the show gracefully even in its weaker narrative moments, which is why for my final trick I will be laying out my gripes with the main Thing this film revolves around: Gilbert (alive). Several, if not most of the episodes of the tv series revolve around accepting death, celebrating life, and moving on. Violet walks a similar path herself, slowly coming to terms with Gilbert's death until she's (presumably) able to stand on her own two feet and live for herself. Gilbert (alive) invalidates all of this. Gilbert (alive) says that it's okay to stay unhealthily attached to a dead person for four years and let them consume you because they might, in an act of god (KyoAni), come back to life one day. I mean, yeah, I'm not going to lie, it was satisfying as hell for them to finally meet and I might have strangled a pillow or two, but what was the point of making Violet go through all of that growth, suffering, and sadness in the first place? What is this film trying to say? What about everyone else who's lost someone, both in the anime, in the movie, and in life itself? Do they get an UNO reverse card? For all intents and purposes, we do not. That's Life as we know it, and the show acknowledges it too, which is why I find it ironic that our protagonist's story is the one that gets to rewrite fate. Gilbert (alive) cheapens her suffering. He also makes her happy. Great. I guess it'll just be like this forever. But those are personal gripes. I think this movie is pretty cool. I just don't know what it's trying to achieve other than 1) making its viewers cry a lot and 2) making its viewers cry even more, which is valid, just to be clear, just not my cup of tea. I don't drink tea. I'm more of a Gatorade kinda guy. If you've got time to kill, check it out, or don't do that, take a walk along the beach, run your bathroom faucet and watch the droplets go down the sink. That's also a kind of living. That's something that Violet Evergarden would call beautiful.
TangyAbleOrange
The thing I've accepted about Violet Evergarden as a whole is that it doesn't tell an amazing story just fine, it tells a just fine story amazingly. Starting with the best parts of the movie, the animation. It's beautiful and gorgeous. There was one part that just showed grass blades and I just stared at how lovely it looked. Fricken grass looked beautiful. The soundtrack is also really good. Also great is how it wasn't used for certain emotional parts. A good film knows that silence is effective. So, this show probably gave me one of the more tear-jerking moments I've had in an anime, and this movie gave me another. If this were a standalone episode simply featuring that subplot, I'd think it was perfect. The main plot is what's regrettably weaker and a bit slow at times, though it's still effective. I really liked the message of telling others what you feel however you can, whenever you can. At least, that's the message I took away from it. It's a very good film.
HikiNEET_Kazuma
The movie was a tear-jerker for most. I, myself, have sadly lost my empathy not too long ago. Because of this, I couldn't cry at the more "vital" parts. (Much like Violet at the beginning, but reversed) Overall this movie was great. Watching it at the theatres after the official release (in America) felt different from when I watch(ed) it on my phone or computer/laptop on Netflix . The sound design and music was outstanding. The art improved over the last few years, and I'm happy to see Kyoto Animations hop back on their feet so quickly. I would recommend anyone to watch this film (in sub, if you can) if you have the time. This is Kazuma, signing off, with my first movie review.

Have you ever felt that an anime is so good that you want it to keep going? This final Violet Evergarden movie sure does make you feel like that The story in this final movie is basically the continuation of that emotional tear-jerking Episode 10. Then it also cover the new short story that is also very beautiful, full of emotions and for sure good for ugly crying too. Finally in the end of the movie, a bit of spoiler, Violet finally get to be with her beloved Gilbert. Everything on this anime is just way too beautiful. Saying "beautiful" for this anime is criminally underrated. Every scene just conveys so much emotions. Have your ever wanted to cry but you can't? Yes, some scenes does put off that vibe. To add it up, the OST's is just amazing. 「WILL-TRUE」 for the ending is very beautiful. Anyway I want to say thank you to the great team of KyoAni and everyone who have contributed to this beautiful anime from around the world. We will never forget this one masterpiece of anime till the day we leave this world

First of all, I don't speak English, so my English is a crap, so take that into consideration... After watching all the series, and the movies either in the cinema or via streaming websites, the character Violet Evergarden is very boring, annoying, and uninteresting. Even though this anime and some of the characters have a special place for the audience, for me there is nothing special. No matter how well we're trained as killer dolls, there are times when we become physically and mentally exhausted. But here, Violet seems to be shaped like a cyborg, duh! Even though she was discovered at a very young age and in the story she's still young. He was looking for someone who was initially his teacher, his leader in the field, then the story changed, he was looking for that person because he wanted to know what "love" was, it was very tiring. The reason I want to watch 'Violet Evergarden is because this anime is set in Europe in the early 19th century, I was eager to start it. I felt bored with the first season, so I tried to finish the entire series and movie. It turned out to be a completed disappointment, I wasted my time & money on this entire story. Sorry :) My rating points are: Art style: 3/5 Stars Animation: 3/5 Stars Effects: 3.5/5 Stars Logic: 2/5 Stars Dialogue: 2/5 Stars Voice acting: 2.5/5 Stars Music: 3/5 Stars Sounds: 3/5 Stars

I view myself as an emotionless person, but I fell in love with this series. The characters, the chrogrophy, the art style, I couldn't wish for a better ending. I don't cry often, but for the first time ever, my mind had to keep telling my body Stop crying, calm down, this isn't real, it's an anime, control your breath, or your health will get worse as I was born sick with a weak body and lung issues. I always go with what my mind tells me, with no regard for my body or self, but my mind... itself couldn't comprehend that it was in a state of sorrow and mourning. It kept feeling that until the end of the movie, when it got to the end, I felt something. I looked at my chest, and I couldn't help but feel something; my heart was warm. People might not understand how hard it is for someone to bear a burden like killing people, to cause other harm, in what they believe is for the greater good, how hard is it for someone to lay everything he has on his mind into words to people he knows he might see them again soon, yet.... There was no better way to portray all these emotions, all those feelings, than this movie Hope you like it.
