Pop Team Epic Kinen

I am not sure if this is a coincidence or is Pop Team Epic truly up to date with all the latest and most obscure anime memes. Kinen special is about trotting races just like 2 other anime series from its season: Golden Kamuy and Uma Musume. This 2 minutes and 15 seconds x2 special contains many other obscurities such as the Super Famicom JRA PAT gambling system. JRA standing for Japan Racing Association. Naturally, we also have my little pony reference here, as well as the Japanese muri meme which Uma Musume also used. While this isn't exactly as convincing and obvious as the Batman Ninja collaboration, I will still give thumbs up to this phenomena. I much rather watch these little things with PTE characters and weird memes that only a true shitposter will understand than Gintama's penis jokes.

Bizarre, chaotic, and surprisingly fun Poputepipikku Kinen is another one of those specials that perfectly encapsulates everything that makes Pop Team Epic such a unique experience. Short, absurd, and unconcerned with conventional logic, the episode delivers exactly what fans of the series expect: a succession of random sketches, nonsensical humor, and situations that seem to have sprung straight from a collective fever dream. This time, the focus is on horse racing, but, true to the franchise's tradition, this theme serves merely as a jumping-off point for a barrage of jokes, references, and completely unpredictable moments. Trying to find a cohesive narrative or significant character development is largely pointless, as that was never the show's intent. The goal here is simply to plunge the viewer into a series of absurd events and see just how much laughter can be wrung out of them. The humor remains the main highlight. Many of the jokes arise from situations so unexpected that they work precisely because of the surprise factor. One moment you think you know where a sketch is headed, and the next, everything veers off in a completely nonsensical direction. This style of comedy might not appeal to everyone, especially those who prefer more traditional or structured humor—but for those who embrace the show's premise, much of the fun lies in that very unpredictability. It is true that much of Pop Team Epic's humor relies on Japanese cultural references and jokes that resonate more with a local audience. Even so, the series manages to maintain international appeal thanks to its chaotic and universally bizarre brand of humor. Even when a specific reference goes over the viewer's head, the sheer absurdity of the situation is usually enough to be entertaining. It is the kind of comedy where you often laugh not because you fully understood the joke, but simply because the situation is too ridiculous for words. Visually, the special follows the franchise's established style, alternating between animation techniques and constantly playing with media formats and conventions. This creative freedom helps reinforce the work's unique identity and contributes to the feeling that absolutely anything can happen at any moment. Ultimately, Poputepipikku Kinen doesn't try to be profound, moving, or memorable. It is simply another dose of the series' signature chaos. Weird? Definitely. Nonsensical? Often. Fun? Undoubtedly, for those who enjoy the franchise's peculiar brand of humor. It isn't an essential special, but it is a great pick for fans who want a few more minutes of the wacky, unpredictable humor that turned Pop Team Epic into one of anime's most eccentric comedies.
