Dr. Stone is a very enjoyable show despite not being anywhere near to being a perfect one. The main draw of the show is it's very interesting premise which alone makes it entertaining to watch. Like I said it's not a perfect show, it has a lot of flaws in it's writing which are much more noticeable in the 1st arc of the show since it gets considerably better after that. The way I see it is this: if the show has flaws, is it doing anything else to make me ignore said flaws to some extent? I say this because a lot of people admit to have really enjoyed a certain show but still sh*t all over it because the writing is bad or something like that. You don't really need a show to have the best writing for you to like it and I think Dr.Stone is the perfect example of just that. It can be very stupid and over the top at times, but it's still very enjoyable. The characters are very likable for the most part and it's fun to see them interact with each other. The art and sound are both fine I guess, I don't really have much say on the matter. Something that had never happened to me before or at least not at this degree did happen with this show. I went from absolutely hating it at first (eps 1-6 the 1st arc of the show) to really liking it by the end. I've seen a lot of people drop Dr.Stone in the first couple of eps and I can see why cuz I was about to drop it too, but if you're feeling like dropping it, I advise you to at least watch past the 1st arc of the show before making that decision since it's easily the weakest part. It focuses on my least favorite characters of the show Taiju and Yuzuriha and I honestly think that the show is 1000x better without them. Taiju is beyond one dimensional and Yuzuriha is just there to be the girl I guess and the romance between these 2 characters did not work for me at all and it serves no purpose to the story. But once the village arc kicks in, I think the show is pretty good. Overall, I definitely think Dr.Stone is on the better shows of 2019. Again despite it's imperfections, I can't help but enjoy it and really like most of it's characters. Really looking forward to the 2nd season. This is my 1st review so sorry in advance if you think is a mess lol and also excuse me for my spelling since English is not my native language.

What if humanity had been reset and restarted, in which rose a war of brain vs. brawn, this is Dr. Stone Dr. Stone tells of a day that suddenly petrified everyone in the world. But Senku voiced by Yusuke Kobayashi a genius scientist with the dream of going to space is awakened from the petrification and finds a way to free people, humanity from the petrification, however when he de petrifies Tsukasa Shishiou voiced by Yuuichi Nakamura, he detests the old modern world and wants a world where the adults abuse their power, however that clashes with Senku's belief of freeing everyone, thus born a war of brawn vs. brains. For the most part for a rather interesting shounen anime where the powercreep comes in science and human power and intellect where Tsukasa is all about what powerful person he's depetrified but where Senkuu gains the upper hand is in the normal modern day technology to outwit and overpower Tsukasa's powerplay. At the start Senkuu has Taiju Ooki voiced by Makoto Furukawa and Yuzuriha Ogawa voiced by Kana Ichinose to help but after some circumstances, things really pick up when Senkuu finds an already inhabited village and begins his "Kingdom of Science" where Kohaku voiced by Manami Numakura, Chrome voiced by Gen Sato and Suika voiced by Karin Takahashi all helps him achieve to bring almost a 1 million years of technological advancement in less than a few days. Kohaku is the voice of reason but is also one of the strongest members of the village, Chrome is much like Senku but only having knowledge he knows from his village stories and Suika is the support of the group. Ginro voiced by Ayumu Murase and Kinrou voiced by Tomoaki Maeno latter join who are guards of the village, while Ginro is the silly buttmonkey of the group while Kinro is the stoic badass once they join Senkuu. Of course some mysteries comes along especially with the existence of an already inhabited village even while humanity has been mostly petrified still but after that it becomes all about brains vs. brawn, or science invention vs. powerful depetrified person and that in itself is very interesting. Now that's one of the primary focus for this anime, but there are mysteries abound in this anime, from how a stone age-like village was created when all of humanity was petrified and the unknown cause of the petrification and this is rather swept under the rug whilst the entire Senku and Tsukasa "war" prep and soon enough begins to take shape. Dr Stone's more promising aspect is that while humanity has reset, we have to conflicting beliefs to remaking the new world, Senku's vision of wanting a Kingdom of Science and want the world back to the way it was, but this links in to Senkuu's dream of wanting to go into space and with his immense knowledge he can if he wanted to, but the roadmap as well as the war with Tsukasa becomes obstacles. On Tsukasa's end, he wants a new world where kids and teenagers rule without the regard of the corrupt adults, another words, reform the world to his vision where everyone can happy and not looked down upon, this we can somewhat sympathize with Tsukasa due to his backstory and his "dream" of a new world reflects that and in a ways, both Senku and Tsukasa isn't wrong but due to how Senku and Tsubasa butt heads with their ideology, it's inevitable that it's either or to how the new world is formed. Dr. Stone however isn't without it's flaws and even for a decent premise and how it carries it premise until the end is very solid to say the least but Dr. Stone being a refreshing shounen...still has it's shounen-esque problems. Like how Senku never loses in order to make the rivalry between brain vs. brawn to be formed, the former asshole character having some level of depth to him, well those are nitpicks with some level of defence to them, the major and only problem LA had was at the start where Senku teams up with Yuzuriha and Taiju, they weren't the best in terms of development as they were starstruck lovers when the petrification happened, thus couldn't develop them that much and as a result rather bland, in comparison to Senku's latter teammates of Chrome, Kohaku and Suika and they get ALOT fo screentime with Senku and as a result with them being new teammates, they get developed alongside Senku and becomes prominent in the anime in helping Senku with his weak points as a science genius and not much less, especially with Kohaku and her wanting to cure her sister Ruri voiced by Reina Ueda and to be honest because of that, Kohaku easily was LA's favourite character. Hell another strengths pertaining to characters to Dr Stone is that even though this anime has a rather large roster of characters, from rivals and villains to allies, the majority of the cast have been fleshed out one way or another, like Gen Asagiri voiced by Kengo Kawanishi, a scamming mentalist and troll who sides with Tsukasa at first but he spies for Tsukasa to learn more about Senku, but as the anime goes along, he slowly changes sides (more like tiptoes on both a bit because he doesn't want to anger both sides) and him being an depetrified, we get to know more about him and how he helps Senku's cause, mainly for perks but to see how far Senku will go and stay on the "winning side" and he's for the most part, a pseudo main-minor cast member. IN a way this ONLY works as Senku's skill set being a scientific genius but not much else thus needing a literal village full of people in order to make the modern-day items after a reset stone age era, thus even the minor characters like Kaseki is a valuable character in order for Senku to build his Kingdom of Science. The animation done by TMS Entertainment is decent as well as having a sorta aesthetic to it's character designs, mainly in that the character designs have certain perks to them to make them stand out whilst being consistent through it's 24 episode run, from Senku's long lettuce like hair to Kohaku's blonde pineapple-like hair to Chrome's headband and Suika's suikahelmet. Dr. Stone does have a comedic take on it and it's what you expect it, chibi or over-exaggerated reactions and animations. The background work is decent to sometimes great when visually portraying some scientific or science based stuff. Overall TMS Entertainment did a rather good to decent job in it's animation from character designs to backgrounding and all in all consistent aesthetically pleasing animation throughout. The voice cast is good, with some veterans to rookie seiyuu's in the works, from Manami Numakura as Kohaku, Reina Ueda as Ruri amd Yuusuke Kobayashi as Senku, Mugihito as Kaseki for veterans. To Gen Sato as Chrome, Karin Takahashi as Suika and if you wanna count her, Kana Ichinose as Yuzuriha. The voice cast is vast much like Dr. Stone's large cast of character but nonetheless with how spread out the characters are, many of the voice actors got their due time one way or another, as for LA's MVP...Manami Numakura, Yuusuke Kobayashi and Karin Takahashi as Kohaku, Senku and Suika respectively. With how Dr. Stone left itself off with this season, yes there will be another season and the next season might be going big with the start of the war between Tsukasa and Senku and LA is excited for it, but with this season essentially giving Tsukasa and Senku getting the manpower one way or another and prepping themselves, the second season is something to be hyped about. As for this season, this season was fairly good to great in certain regard, from some strong character development, SCIENCE, character conflicts all under the banner of a rather refreshing new shounen take mainly it's powercreep being the basics of humanity taken for granted, sure the opening first episodes is a bit of a drag but once Senku finds a village and meets Kohaku, it ramps up significantly. Dr Stone is a refreshing new shounen, it's also has some of the same flaws from the shounen genre, but nonetheless Dr. Stone just ticked ALOT of LA's points of interests and tho…

A stone world where the whole world has been turned to stone, Senku was the first unpetrified human on earth after a long, long time... Already from the beginning I could see the potential of this show and it was a joy in every way to watch through! So, starting with the good stuff I can first of mention the art style: The art style is not only a perfect copy from the manga but as well the most fitting artstyle I've ever seen! With these thicc lines and shapes it truly gives you the expression of ''Dr. Stone''! 10/10 The story was really, really good, I mean.. a masterpiece, both backstory and ongoing story. Humans was turned to stone, how many conspiracy theories could come out of that? What ideas does that give the watcher?? It's an open mystery were everything could be right, and the fans can enjoy to the fullest to talk with their friends about it! 10/10 The sound, the soundtrack... the soundtrack is so good I don't even need the video itself to cry (for real)! For me the music, voice actors and effects are really, really important and this show gives me exactly what I need to really get invested! Also.. the music fits soo good to the series, basically, motivational stone age music! Couldn't have been done better! 10/10 The characters is really good designed, the only thing lacking would be some creativity but all in all it's lovely! The characters really fits the voice actors and there is Characters (in the series) that i've never seen anything like! 9/10 Sience! Could there be a better theme? It's literary so good that it motevates me to study for all my might when i watch this, building, finding materials and using mathematical theories and base the whole series on that! Awesome!! I really enjoyed my time with Dr. Stone and when those epic moments come, music and story together, I can't really do anything else than feel the biggest chills streaming around my body as well as tears! I will never forget this masterpiece of a anime! Enjoyment: 9/|10 Negative notes: The only negative was that except the start i was waiting a little (few episodes) to get fully invested, and not too epic (still epic, tho) And that there were especially 1 episode that was directly kinda lame, haha! I Only found sone mistakes in the story but nothing to complain about! I would recommend watching this before everything else and if you love it, i can even assure you that the manga is legend as well!! 9/10 or.. 93/100 i guess, haha!!

It's good, but it's not that compelling. If you've ever played any civilization games where you use resources to build a city, you might sorta like this anime? Dr. Stone sets up a very interesting premise in the first few episodes. Senku is a high school student with the mind of a genius. One moment he's doing experiments in science class; the next, the earth gets subjected to this mysterious power that turns everyone into stone. Two million years later, Senku breaks free from his cryogenic stasis. Now, it's up to him to rebuild civilization using his extensive knowledge of science. That hook was definitely a clincher. And don't get me wrong, the first few episodes with Taiju and Yuzuhira were very engaging. I liked the comical dynamic between him and Senku. As the episodes go on, Taiju and Yuzuhira become sidelined, and you won't see them again until the end of the season Eventually, Senku meets these new characters, and he continues to build new inventions. At that point, I realized that the "high" I got from seeing Senku make new things were starting to wane a bit. The show explains the actual science behind Senku's inventions, but it just becomes too... scientific to the point where it becomes kinda redundant. Even though the episodes are backed by factual scientific info, some of the inventions Senku pulls off are so ridiculous my suspension of disbelief started to, well, unsuspend. The new characters, however, are interesting in their own way. Plus, the episodes where Senku retrieves materials were fun to watch. Overall, I think the first half of the season started off strong, then it just becomes this mishmash of new characters, fan-service, and information overload. It was a fun watch, but it's not enough for me to check out the second season.

The first 5 episodes were some of the best that I have ever seen in a shounen anime. Giving initial narrative control to someone who isn't the protagonist was intriguing. When Tsukasa was "the show" the show was among the best anime. It's always fun when a villain is principle based and not just anti-the-hero. It's even better that Tsukasa is actually right about how the downfall of society was property over people. And his willingness to achieve anarchs-primitivism by morally dark grey means makes him all the more compelling. How did the show go from good to bad? I'm not entirely certain. Said another way, when did Dr. Stone jump the shark? I think someone could argue it was with the introduction of Tsukasa, and there probably is some merit to that. Defeating a tiger in hand to hand really removed the show from any serious contention that it was about science (and not fantasy). I think the show started on a downward trajectory once it got comfortable with itself in the village. I hung onto hope that it wouldn't just fall into the general formula for shounen, but it did. But the biggest mistake was taking Tsukasa off screen after just 5 episodes... never to return.

It literally changed my life. I still cannot believe how funny yet serious this show can be. I laughed, I cried but most importantly I cared. I cared throughout the whole show. It's rewatchability is just off the charts. It's funny, with a hint of mystery throughout, because you're never just sure about Preparation The meats are soaked for 1-2 hours. We clean it from cases and other inappropriate things. The vegetables are cleaned. We pack the meat and onions in a 5 liter jar. Dissolve in as much water as it can cover (approx. 3-4 l). First heat over high heat until boiling, then take over low heat and salt and pepper. Always remove the foam with a filter. The vegetables are chopped to taste and washed. If our soup has boiled its foam, we can pack the vegetables and the parsley in it. Towards the end we take out the parsley, onion and pepper. Let us continue to cook our soup. If we think the soup is cooked, we take out the chicken’s leg, and if the skin starts to crack from the cartilage and joints of the toe, that’s fine. Seal, take vegetables and meats separately. The juice is allowed to settle a little and then filtered through a fine filter. Leave two tablespoons of soup at the bottom of the pan. Bring the remaining soup to a boil in a small bowl and cook the dough in it. Once the dough is cooked, do not strain, but cover with a lid and let stand for 20 minutes. The soup is served with meat, vegetables and pasta.

Dr. Stone is a show that is easy to binge watch and is fun. It is pretty much an isekai anime (trapped in another word). You can learn some science from it. Here are the pros and cons. Pros: 1. Good theme songs. 2. Characters are well developed. 3. A plot that keeps you excited. Cons: 1. Animation is average but could be better. 2. While generally good the pacing can get weird. As a Shonen Jump anime Dr. stone surprisingly try's to be realistic. The reason Dr. Stone is so fun to watch is because its unpredictable and keeps changing. The main protagonist Senku is a brilliant scientist and has a fun kind of quality that most lack. While this anime is overall pretty easy to understand you should know some science before viewing.

Science, honestly one of the most bizarre concepts out there which proves quite hard to understand let alone make an anime out of. Props to the author. There are no spoilers below, so feel free not to be hesitant to read it ^^ The story is well written and thought of. It is about how a light from outer space petrified humanity making humankind restart from scratch, and how a genius is trying to build back the world to the era it originally was. Amazing right? but there is more. On his journey on doing so, he did something that could lead to his undoing. This took a jump from being an anime of science to an anime of conflict and survival. The very idea of this is amazing, and incorporating battles in an anime that also focuses on science is just intriguing. The sounds are also good in this one. The sounds and story are so good in this anime, that it could literally put you in a hype train which will make youwant more. All the music are well out together, it goes well with the anime scenes , and it will make you appreciate it more. The OPs and EDs are also good, they all have that primitive feel to it, which promotes the anime. For the art, I find the character designs great as it is unique and stands out from other designs from other anime. I will also give the animations a pretty good pass, didn’t really find any flaws with the animation, and there are quite some pretty animated scenes in the anime. Now, probably what I like the most from the anime, The characters. They are so damn interesting, and fails to get boring. The important characters all have different motives and convictions which is what alters the story. Opinion against opinion, motive against motive, if one loses, will change the fate of humankind. The characters pretty much dictates how the story will go, which for sure will slowly and breathtakingly lead to an amazing result. amazing anime, did not find any flaws (except for the ones that are beyond my knowledge xd) and is enjoyable. I definitely recommend you to give this a try.

SPOILER-FREE REVIEW i feel that what makes this anime so great is mainly due to it's characters and it's worldbuilding. almost every character is fun to watch play out on screen, they all have their own quirks which make them such a joy to watch and none of them feel useless or underdeveloped. and we get to know more about this post-apocalyptic world Senku finds himself in at a pace that feels natural. if i had to describe a flaw with this anime, it's that if you take a step back and observe the arcs that happen in this season (and will happen in the next) they all seem to pan out the same way: senku and the gang need to build a new thing from the old world that seems impossible to build with their current technology, so they construct new machines to upgrade their current tech, while running into some bad guys they need to defeat. if you learn to ignore the plot and focus on the characters, you will have a great time with this
goudvuozygyurg
Dr. Stone is an overhyped anime which only received any attention because Crunchyroll advertised the crap out of it. After each episode I was more motivated drop the whole anime and forget that it even exists then watch the next episode. There is only on category for which I will give it credit for and that is the theme. The theme fits perfectly with the setting the writers were trying to develop and it gives off a sort of it's whole new world kind of vibe. Apart from that the only interesting character is Senku who has that perk because he is very smart. In short, there is no person who ever deserves the torture of watching this anime.

A video review can be found here: https://youtu.be/eBWFquXmpgI What would you do if you got stuck in time for 3700 years and wake up to a post-apocalyptic world that resembles the stone age with humans no longer being at the top of the food chain? No electricity, no easily available food, no internet, no smartphones et cetra. All of life’s luxuries taken away from you replaced with the brutal rawness of mother nature’s bosom. If your answer is to, err, panic while you desperately try to maintain your sanity in the absolute hellish circumstance you’ve found yourself in. And then, once you’ve overcome that mental barrier, try to think of ways to survive in this wild world, then yeah, that’s probably what most would do. What you wouldn’t think of doing is to embark on a journey towards the utilization of science to rapidly blitz through the entire timeline of human evolution and take stone age humans to modern age in one lifetime. I think it is safe to say none of us is gonna be that ambitious considering the situation. But then again, that’s exactly why we’re not the protagonists of a shounen series either. Today I’m covering Dr. Stone — a series that makes you truly appreciate what a momentous achievement it was for the human civilization when Edison lit up the first light bulb — yes, it truly made me stare in awe at the light bulb I just switched on a while ago. ;) No but seriously, that brief tidbit of information I just dropped? That’s the hook. That’s what makes this anime unique— it makes you really appreciate the insane amount of work that went into the creation of these articles you use on a daily basis and probably take for granted — everything that you see around you is a byproduct of steady evolution that took place over the course of millions of years. To blitz through all that time and achieve crude, yet functional implementations of modern-day equivalents of these items while under the constraints of being limited to stone-age era resources — you’ve got a formula for something truly exciting. And Dr. Stone knows that. The series always knew that — which is why it eventually focuses purely on Senku’s scientific revolution and race to modern civilization— with the key word being eventually. Because it doesn’t get to it right from the get go. And that’s the only negative — it takes a while to set things up. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t like the first 6 episodes or so are bad or anything — its just that they pale in comparison to the stuff that comes later. I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the series till I hit episode 7. While having a relatively slow start is usually fine, taking almost 6 episodes out of a 24 episode series to get there is a little bit on the slower side and there’s a very good chance a lot of potential audience may just tune off before they reach that point. There’s no dearth of entertainment in this day and age, after all. Why would you bother to stick to a relatively slow paced series set in the stone age when you can, say, immerse yourself in a post-apocalyptic world in The Last of Us (especially with the Last of Us II coming soon) or experience the supernatural world of vampires and witchers in Castlevania and The Witcher, respectively? Because when it gets going, it goes pretty goddamn hard. While you’re not being thrown plot twists every single episode and the relative pace of the anime still stays the same, the shift to focusing purely on the scientific inventions marks a stark improvement in the general quality of the series. I’ve tried to emphasize it before, and I’ll try my best again — there’s literally nothing else out there that can make you feel what Dr. Stone does simply by the virtue of its unique setting. By just letting you see primitive humans react to the wonders of science and be completely blown away by the sheer utility that each single advancement brings to the table, Dr. Stone really does effortlessly carve its own niche among the rest of the shounen series out there. Just in case you’re wondering though, it is 10 billion percent for good reason that I focused so much on the primary hook and nothing else for a majority of the time I spent on this article/review. Because every other aspect just acts as seasonings and spices to the main dish — the science, and the excitement of seeing things get created from scratch. We can discuss how it doesn’t reach the heights of series like Attack on Titan when it comes to its soundtrack (although it is pretty fucking good) or how it is, visually speaking, nothing to write home about. Or about how the characters aren’t deep or complex enough. All of that, at the end of the day, is fine because Season 1 acts as a setup for a much grander tale. But even if that were not the case and this is all we ever got — the main dish here, as an independent entity, is as delectable as they come. It is a solid series that any science nut should most definitely watch. And even if you’re not one, chances are that you’re still gonna have a great time with it. All said and done, this is how you’ll probably end up feeling about this series — “Sosoruze, Kore wa” (This is Exhilarating).

Pros :1) First of all this anime is very smart as in modern civilization you have to think how to make this technology in the stone age ??? without using the knowledge of mankind after the stone age but this issue is overcome as the protagonist is himself is from modem civilization ..this thing blows my mind how the writer is using the protagonist to justify the science he uses. 2) For senku(the protagonist) I have never seen that unique character design. 3) all the science for the most part is 100% accurate you will also get disclaimer Cons: 1) development of technology shown it's just too fast. 2) Everything goes most of the time according to plan 3) fighting animation mediocre

Original premise, executed wonderfully. Unlike some animes, this show does not wait around in introducing the main premise of the show. You are also introduced to immediately likable characters. You have a gauge on the characters attitudes instantly, Senku is ambivalent to anything other than science, Taiju is just a joy. The progression of scientific experiments that takes place throughout the show is very, very interesting. You go through the show understanding how everything comes together, then take a step back and think 'wait, how the hell has this just happened?'. It brings the seemingly impossible tasks to a point where they seem perfectly plausible and doable......even though they really aren't. Though lite on action, it really delivers in the limited sequences. Especially during their mission to acquire certain ingredients for their experiments. The main stand out point for me is the story, especially as things progress. There are very few animes that make me tear up, this show did many, many times. There are moments where things are progressing nicely then all of a sudden you are hit with a twist that pieces things together you already thought were together. One of the best paced and balanced stories in anime iv'e followed in a long time. Excellent anime, cannot wait for season 2.

The situation they got thrown into was pretty unique, everyone gets petrified, wake up a thousand years later, very cool! I also loved the whole scientific basis for the whole show, it was practically the only reason I watched the show. Excluding the animation, and art style, and openings and endings. Damn these guys actually did a really good job creating this. Dr.Stone is ridiculous most of the time, and its meant to be. With plain cringy humor, making up for it with ridiculous faces. Extremely tropey characters with hardly any substance to them (and this isn't just talking about the main cast) Along with the extremely uninteresting and plain boring narrative with Tsukasa's anti boomer brigade, maybe I would have liked it if I cared about Tsukasa? No, he's just trotting his ass around murdering people because he thinks "All old people bad". For the main villain, it's a pretty shallow motive. It could've been improved if his character's personality was... Nope, what even was his personality again??? Honestly, this show would have done better with a slice of life comedy where they didn't get petrified. It's ironic how the point of this anime is to show off this super-intelligent green onion haired highschooler, smile creepily into the camera after defeating big bad with science once again when the most basic and plot convenient elements of the show are the least grounded in reality. Overall this ended up being a cool new show about science and stuff that fell flat because of how bad everything around it was. 4/10, would not watch

Dr. Stone is an anime with potential (or at least it should). His soundtrack, along with the story and the situations in which the characters find themselves, are good. What excited me the most was to follow the evolution of science! I dare say that the best part of the anime is to see Senku building things. And you know, Senku is a very admirable protagonist, characters with no sexual interest should be more frequent. There are also other cool characters (like Gen and Taiju), and the interaction between them is funny. But what can I say? After a few episodes, they showed Senku's father's past. After showing it, the course of history became overly dramatic. And one of the things that left me disappointed was the song that the blonde sings. The voice, in addition to completely leaving the voice of the voice actor, is very irritating. They could have chosen a better song to represent the final episode of the first season. But obviously, I wouldn't rate it so mediocre if it were just for that. The other things I didn’t like were: the famous female sex appeal (the medicine to drink Ruri was the most clueless thing I’ve ever seen), emotional songs in random moments and, of course, the factor that bothered so many people: Senku is extremely intelligent and has a superhuman memory - just as the villain has superhuman strength. They are mere teenagers, but they still have 0 defects. You can't take it seriously when you have characters like that. Oh and the art didn't excite me too much, especially the girls' appearance is very weird. I hope that the second season, which promises to have a lot of struggle, will make up for my disappointment.

Dr. Stone lives up to the hype and goes beyond it! The characters are very relatable and fun, especially the villagers, each with their own funny tropes. The premise is great, but the execution on it is exhilarating! Watching Senku-tachi cook up something new every episode as they leap through millions of years of civilization is just so satisfying, and the fact that it's all mostly scientifically sound makes it even more amazing. My only reservation on this anime is the villain. Though I like his motive, he doesn't get enough screentime and we don't get enough of his "empire" to truly understand it. That being said, season 2 might fix this problem. All in all, IMO probably the best anime of 2019.
tigermaskshinobi
I think the idea of this what if situation where our technologically advanced age were to go back to the stone age and in a pretty much post apocalyptic scenario, what would a survivor do considering he is intelligent and has great knowledge about the science of our age? I think this idea is original, interesting and has so much potential. I think it makes up for an interesting world that begs to be explored and the challenges the protagonist faces as he recreates various inventions from our time is what keeps me invested in this anime, From creating modern dishes to fighting diseases and creating weapons and electricity and mobile phones, I think the reinventing challenges picked for the protagonist are very interesting ones. I think Dr Stone is a fun anime and is also kind of educational. I don't think the characters are super well written but they are engaging. I also like the moral battle going on between the protagonist and the antagonist about whether or not everyone should be revived and it extends the debate between the overall workings of stone age and the technological age about freedom and what is natural. I think it's what makes Tsukasa a kind of decent villain but I think where it loses me is just realistically I don't think Tsukasa would be able to form an army, at least very easily, like imagine if you were revived by Tsukasa and you were told that you are going to be a part of a youth army but your parents and anyone you loved who was a gen x or boomer wouldn't be revived, I don't think every young person would accept that unless he was bullied by Tsukasa to follow him, and that's just a part of a broader issue I have with this anime which is I think it overlooks some important human emotion and logically it takes the liberties of a generic shonen, whether that may be in the actions of a character or the storytelling itself. one of my biggest problems comes during the revelations of Senku's step father and what happened to them, Probably a lot of what happened to them might still be unrevealed but it brings up a lot of questions like why basically they didn't do anything much except for passing information in some codey way called the hundred stories or something, a lot of it feels very convenient for melodrama and there's a huge discussion that can be had on them but I'm not going into that now. Another problem I had was I felt the animation wasn't always good, I think it's decent but it can be really sloppy and rough sometimes. Overall I do like Dr Stone, I think it has potential to be better and I'm interested to see where and how it will go, looking forward to season 2.

My review of Dr. Stone: This...is...exhilarating! Despite its manga being published in Weekly Shonen Jump, Dr. Stone is very much NOT your average shonen anime, as there is very little fighting and no one has chi or superpowers. I was a bit skeptical of watching it at first and I was in the middle of a few shows, so I tried it on a whim and thought I'd drop it pretty quick. Well, after about 3 episodes, I was HOOKED! This show is right up there with Demon Slayer for my pick for best shonen of 2019! The story of Dr Stone is pretty wild (9/10). Basically a mysterious event occurs that fossilizes all of the humans on earth at once for thousands of years. Then our main man, science nerd Senku, emerges from stone and has to rebuild civilization from the ground up, one small step at a time, in this Stone World (people are basically back to being cavemen). I really love how this show takes its time and shows each step and how complicated it can be to do something as "simple" as making a bottle of cola for a snack. I love the main conflict, too, because you can kind of see both sides. Senku on the one hand is building his "nation of science" because he doesn't want all of our technological progress to be lost, he wants to bring society back to the 2010's. The villain Tsukasa, on the other hand, wants to keep us in the stone age where "might makes right" because as the strongest fighter he'll remain on top. Also he makes the point that technology's progress has given us some pretty bad things that we DON'T want to see return, such as atomic bombs, chemical warfare, etc. I've seen Boichi's phenomenal art in the manga, and the anime never really reaches that height, but it does a pretty damn good job of replicating it (10/10). There are scenes in this show that are simply breathtaking. Hell, just watch the two OP's for some dazzling visuals! Other standout moments include when Senku first reinvents electricity, or when that mysterious beam first hits the planet and turns everyone to stone. I'm not sure where else to mention this, so real quick I gotta praise the scene where poison gases from this lake of sulfuric acid takes the form of a gorgeous woman. This sexy lady lures you to the lake but then turns horrific and zombified when you get too close to her poison gas! I just loved this haunting image, so well done. The sound in Dr. Stone is simply outstanding (10/10). This show's use of its music is so great, some of the best I've seen in anime. Little moments stand out like Gen's quick rap he does while making pieces for this project, or any of the times the Diva sang a song. I'll never forget the scene where Senku saves a trapped Kohaku from a fallen tree, that got my head banging! I also gotta give special mention to the diva's songs, since this has got to be the first time in an anime I've seen an English song performed that wasn't in broken "Engrish", they actually did a really good job! I loved all of the characters in Dr. Stone (9/10). Our boy Senku is such a different shonen protagonist, in a genre where heroes usually solve problems with their fists, Senku has to use his brain to get anything done. He seems like an asshole sometimes but the show points out a few times he's actually a good guy at heart. I really liked Taiju and Yuzuriha (even though their romance was a bit cliche), and was sad to see them part ways after a few episodes. However, the new characters we got were so great it was ok. I liked Chrome a lot because he proved that there will always be a mad scientist like Senku no matter what era you're in. Even without technology there'll always be that guy mixing shit together just to see what happens, y'know? My fave was best girl Kohaku, a total badass warrior woman. I also liked her motivation: they explain that Kohaku became such a tomboy/fighter because she needed to protect her ailing sister Ruri. I was iffy about the mentalist Gen at first but he turned out to be cool, even if he plays both sides at times. Even bully characters like Magman got some decent development where he eventually helps out because, hey, it's his village too, y'know? I freaking loved this show from start to finish, and it even got me slightly interested in picking up a chemistry textbook! My enjoyment was a 9/10 and I'd give it a 9/10 overall, I can't recommend this show highly enough.

This is a review of the anime only. I have not read the manga. This is the most brilliant, fun-to-watch anime I've seen in a very, very long time. I've started it over and rewatched it several times. It doesn't get old. It is 10 billion% my favorite anime of 2019. What I Love About It: 1. It's gorgeous. The art style is breathtaking. 2. It's funny AF. I crack up every episode. 3. The dynamic between the main characters is funny, sweet, endearing, and powerful. 4. It raises some really great philosophical and ethical questions. 5. It's a positive look at science rather than a negative one. 6. It doesn't focus on the details of science as much as the process and the type of person that becomes a scientist and the type of mentality it takes to be one. 7. While there's an over-arching theme posing unanswerable philosophical questions, it's also action packed. The questions are posed amidst the action if one is astute enough to pick up on them, but it doesn't slow the action or make it superfluous. 8. I love that the characters understand the usefulness of roles and stick to their roles for the most part, but also aren't afraid to step out of them when needed. What I Don't Like: 1. One really blatant echii pose in one scene that was 100% unnecessary. The scene was necessary (and wasn't echii), but the overly porno-wannabe pose wasn't. 2. The shoes the village people wear don't make any sense to me. I don't see how they balance on them at all much less fight in them. ART: I think this might be a love it or hate it style but I absolutely adore it. Each character looks completely distinct, not just by wearing different clothes or having different hair. They have very distinct facial shapes. Senku's is angular. Taiju's is blocky. Tsukasa's is a mixture of the two. Yuzuriha's is round and soft and adorable. Kazuko's has elven eyes. All are very different from each other. I love the tattoos or markings that they have, many of which seem in accordance with their personality or role. Tsukasa's resembles scars. Senku's resembles lightning bolts. Gen's resembles part of a demonic smile, noticeable only when he demonically smiles, lol. (There's a super quick explanation for these in Episode 3. It doesn't exactly make sense yet but that doesn't detract from their aesthetic.) But it's not just the characters that are gorgeous. The backgrounds are stunning. Every single one. There isn't a frame that makes me think they were lazy. They also use the art as part of the humor. When they're trying to overemphasize an expression, usually for the sake of comedy but not always, the drawing is insanely detailed! And it works perfect for creating the desired effect. HUMOR: it's often over-the-top but it works. I crack up every single episode. It's also intelligent humor, which I adore. I crack up not just when they're being blatantly funny with the art as a cue, but also when it's subtle and requires a knowledge of the character's personality to get it. CHARACTERS: I love every character in here. Every single one. They do such a good job of showing their feelings and thoughts without having to go into direct introspection for everything. But there's also a lot of introspection and I like that too. The characters are blatantly divided into roles and types but it works because they each represent a sect of humanity and each sect is necessary to move forward. What's great is that despite this segregation, no one is belittled or humiliated. Each role is vital in its purest form and valued as such. If they step out of their role, they either fail completely or they have to work harder to perform a function outside their role. They make mistakes and are real. Senku teases Taiju a lot but he never humiliates him. Each character has their own goals and motivations. They aren't just there as place holders. They have strong beliefs cultivated by their pasts and they pursue what they believe to be right. They care deeply for their loved ones and have their own ways of showing it. They are simple yet at the same time, complex. All are lovable. Senku is one of the kindest characters I've met in a long time. He reads people quickly and accurately and won't act like he's being nice but he is. He goes out of his way to be kind and it's so touching. I adore him. PHILOSOPHY: There is a lot of philosophical and ethical questions posed in this anime. Some are not spelled out for you. You have to pay attention and think. What does it mean to be a civilization? What makes humans different from animals? If you could start over, would you be selective? Should you be selective? What would you do for your beliefs? Is technology bad? Is there a limit where it goes from good to bad? Just how much do we rely on science and not even realize it? Could we live without science? Can you stop progress? And more. None of these are really 100% answerable. There are too many factors, values, and variables. But it's interesting to see the characters' different views on it. There are some opinions given from the creators by nature of who the hero is and who the villain is, but in today's era where people are trying to go backwards and reject the technological advances of the last thirty years, this is a brilliant, thought-provoking look at it all. SCIENCE: All the science in here is sound (aside from the premise of surviving 3700 years trapped in stone) even if it's used in over-the-top ways and accelerated (but Senku's coming from a place of hindsight so it makes sense that it would move faster). I love that the scientists are trying to do good as opposed to using it to hurt people and/or serve their own greed. The scientists aren't belittled or humiliated or made to seem like pariahs of society, nor are those who don't posses science or intelligence. It's wonderful. SOUND: I really love the opening and ending songs for this anime. I honestly can't choose between the first and second openings as to which I like best, though I think I'm leaning toward the second. The ending songs are great too, as is the music during the show. The music fits the scenes and adds to them. Sound effects are often used for comedic effect, which I love. There is a sound effect while Kinro is bleeding profusely in Episode 18 and everything else about the moment is serious but the sound effect adds a level of humor to it that's just brilliant. STORY: The premise is wonderfully unique and yet also a timeless classic. How do humans behave when set back eons? How do they form a civilization and what kind of civilization do they make? Who has the right to set and enforce the rules? What is the "right" type of civilization? Is there one? So many wonderful conversation starters. OVERALL: I don't give many 10s. This one earned it because it made me laugh almost every episode and cry in many of them. This became my go-to anime to watch to cheer myself up. It made me genuinely very happy while watching it. Senku is one of the most endearing characters I've ever met. I recommend this 10 billion%.
