The Misfit of Demon King Academy
NinjaKidKat2
The Misfit of Demon King Academy features an interesting twist on the classic tropes of overpowered protagonists and battles between human heroes and demon kings. It manages to avoid the pitfall of having a boring main character that uses their world-breaking powers to cover up their lack of a character, and uses it's generally well-rounded cast of characters to form a decent metaphor about racism and classism. On top of that, there's a consistent layer of subtle comedy, well-animated fight scenes and a good deal of world-building. Story/Writing 8/10 The story, while I personally found that it could've been a bit more engaging in some areas, is pretty well thought out. It spins a tale of a genuinely amazing historic figure not getting the recognition and respect he deserves once he gets reincarnated, and how the actions of the few may horrifically distort history to the point that it makes society worse in the future. While at first it looks like a generic school setting, it manages to set itself apart from the overdone tropes the setting is often associated with, and it leaves that setting later on. There's a overhanging narrative about the evils and consequences of racism and classism, and while I do think it's good that the anime addresses them at all, I think it doesn't go quite far enough. Still, there's a good bit to like here. Characters 9/10 This anime has a subtle comedic tone, and it's characters sell it quite well. First, I want to address the OP main character himself, Anos. The ever-smirking Demon King has some of the typical characteristics of an OP protagonist; Arrogance to spare, condescending to pretty much everyone who dares interact with him, and absolute bullshit powers. However, these traits aren't as one-dimensional as they may seem; Anos truly cares about his allies and the world in general despite his title of Demon King, and he doesn't display his arrogance and condescension a lot at all to anyone who doesn't deserve it. He has power and knowledge far surpassing his peers, and yet he generally doesn't show it unless the situation calls for it, at which point he pretty much shows off. He truly seems like a wise king who truly cares about his own people, though he might put people who seriously wrong him or other good people through hell in order to get them to seriously think about what the hell they've been doing. He also really seems to like his mother's mushroom gratin. Good on you, Anos. Outside of that however, the rest of the cast manages to dig themselves a good spot as well. I liked the Necron sisters and their main arc in particular, though I wish that Sasha didn't stay a tsundere for the rest of the show. Visuals 8/10 Nothing bad, but not much outstanding either. It was nice watching the (sometimes rather short) fight scenes, and the designs were nice to look at. I may also like cat form Ivis a lot. I like cats. Enjoyment 8/10 All of the above things made for a show I generally liked quite a bit, and it made me excited to watch the second season. As someone who believes a show has to be enjoying above all things, The Misfit of Demon King Academy is a win in my book. There's not much else to say here. All in all, this show was an enjoyable thing to binge-watch on a Sunday afternoon, and I'm glad it didn't fall into the pitfalls of the genre it follows. I'll be gladly awaiting the completion of the second season.

This was the rare kind of anime where it is so absolutely godawful that it loops around to be enjoyable. It was a wild ride from start to finish in how many cliches it could cram into one episode. I kept a written list as I was watching to see how many plot elements I could guess before they were revealed a whole 3.5 minutes later (i.e. 'oh boy I bet he's the good guy who's going to be a bad guy with a sad backstory but actually good in the end but also harem'). My final score was 43/47. This anime is a tire fire covered in rats and I am its moth.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy Spoilers Ahead! Whew, lad. This is my favorite type of anime, generic autism. Don't you just love an anime with no starting foundation about the world? How or why things are the way they are? Our story, starts off with Demon Lord Anos Voldigoad. After sacrificing himself 2,000 years ago in order for the kingdom to achieve peace, he is resurrected as a newborn child. Saying his name just after being born and growing up to the physical appearance/age of a 17-year-old. Technically he's a month old and any of these 'harem' girl romances should be prohibited since they are dating a baby. But that's just me bashing it for the sake of being awful though. Anos Voldigoad has no challenges nor any fearful antagonist against him. He's just being OP for the sake of being OP. That's the worst type of written character in my opinion. No conflict or any stakes, so he has nothing to worry about it. Everything just goes his way, because the story just has it written that way, making him not one bit interesting. Things are just thrown at you to advance the story. Misha is the shy kuudere girl, a doll that only talks when being spoken to. Sasha is a tsundere girl that hates him thus challenging and later on falling head over heels for him in the span of the same episode, leading up to their inevitable kiss. I love the randomness of their special magic names that they come up with on the spot. The fact that he brings anyone back to life and even having the power to change the character itself by being reborn is just there for no reason! Stopping time? We got it! Multiverse and multidimensions? It's right here. Honestly the only thing going for the show is the animation is barely sub-par. The random comedic moments like a baby talking out of nowhere did make me laugh at the pure silliness of this anime. With terrible storytelling this anime is trash, because the protagonist is an OP beast for the sake of being OP, it's his entire character trait. So if you still want to watch it, just turn off your brain and enjoy the generic trash for what it is.

Misfit of demon king academy is summers biggest dissapointment with a trash op mc with no character devolopment he is almost a harem lead a rip off ,of a rip off, of a op isekai anime of every season. Story 5: They dont focus on the story much and the story is of a demon king whos revived after years the people dont know hes the reincarnation theya re op nobilitys whom he defeats in with ease. Art:7 The art is worth mentioning its good as expected of silver link which has good designs the atatck designs and art were amazing . Sound:7 good and awesome sound effects of attacks like it. Character:5 Little to no character devolopment which is very dissapoint ment its just every day about the mc recking nobility s oof. Enjoyment:5 little to no enjoyemnt very sad The anime had potential to avoid being an seasonal op anime chaarcter very sad. Overall:4 I expected the anime to be very good after completing the first episode i thought it had potential to be an amazing show but it dissapeared in the second episdoe which i was waiting all week for.

Well ... how about a concept anime like this, there are already a lot of MCs who are overpowered and keep getting more power but somehow even though I still like this anime, I even hope that there are more episodes or I don't really hope for season 2 create and better than this Now I'm excited and can't wait to watch this anime because at that time I really liked anime with a demon king and this happened to really attract my attention and I tried to keep going and this anime was really interesting when I watched it for the first time and I watched it. I will be up to 24 episodes or more because it is really busy ehh I only know only 13 episodes I am a little disappointed because there are many things that are not in the light novel, but fortunately it's still good and somehow in the ending I even cried even though according to me myself not too sad and I know what happened but suddenly there were tears trying For this anime, the graphics and visuals are fine and have no problems. The art is also good, I like it, the sound is good, and the character deteriorates, huh ... like anime overpowering usually. Now for the story, it's really epic, how can I bring tears to my eyes and the story means that sometimes humans are the devil themselves and in my opinion, if there is a romantic comedy ataromantic, it can make this a really good story.

No Masterpiece. But Goddamn enjoyable. I'd like to begin by saying how many people I have seen rate this a 1 - 3 on the premise that it's not some new groundbraking thing. Reading the reviews for this show I think many people have forgotten why they watch Anime in the first place, to be entertained. This show doesn't come at you with some crazy concept or backstory. You have your generic Humans used to fight Demons History and a waaaayyyyy to overpowered main protagonist. However this show executes everything very well which is why I think I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. Comedy, Action and Story Progression is at the perfect Level to never leave you bored and apart from maybe some scenes in the earlier Episodes you're never left wanting for anything really. Also even though the Story isn't unique, it has been a satisfying one and also gave this show the opportunity to have in my opinion the Chance to have one of the best endings I've seen. If you're looking for a quick fun show to sort of remind you why you got into Anime in the first place I highly recommend this one :)

Sadly, it started with a lot of potential, but it just ended so bad and so pathetic.. 0 caracter development, no starting point.. Also a bit cringe sometimes.. I like it tho, but second part of the anime is just poor.. it fells like the story was writen by a kid weeb. There are some outstanding mangas out there.. even so this kind of poor writing gets an anime.. It is just sad.. Again, i liked it, but i hate at the same time.. it s good enough if you don t have anything else to watch and are really bored..

I don't mind overpowered mc and I particularly like harems but this ain't it, this is the corniest shit I've ever seen as opposed to rpg type demon lord/hero yada yada shows or harems or both I expected the show will get the usual hate overpowered mc and generic harem does but I actually find the score pretty high and the comments positive, I never waste my time on subjective reviews, all reviews are subjective period, especially here on MAL The thing that bothered me most of the show is how narcissistic or was in guise of being narcissistic for comedic purposes probably but it ain't funny while you'll get that 90% of every episode and 95% of the entire show the mc being narcissistic for comedic purposes, now I don't have problem with narcissistic mc or any character but this show do that like it doesn't know if they're tryna be comedic or serious, it's a little bit of both but that's exactly why it's so corny As for something subjective I'd like to add I don't like it when a harem have a side couple, fcuk that shit, every girl should be thirsty for the mc or just don't make it a harem at all 1/10

Over the past few weeks, my friend and I embarked on a journey together. I can say that, without a doubt, this is the best worst anime I have ever seen in my life. I think I had more fun watching this than women's tennis, and I fucking love women's tennis. This is not a good anime, do not get me wrong. If you are trying to honestly enjoy your time casually watching some cool cartoons, this anime is not for you. If you are on the edge of a mental breakdown, this will push you off the cliff and you will never be able to return. I think I cried about 10 times. If this show is meant to be a parody, it did not do a good job. The fact that I can not even tell if it was, or was not a parody speaks volumes about the quality of the show. Anus, the main character, is your normal overpowered, emotionless plot device. None of the side characters are good either, I can not even remember there names and I just watched the show. The plot is contrived and unimaginative. The art and animation is uninspired and dull. There are almost no positive qualities in this show, and that's what makes it so enjoyable. If you get together with some friends and make fun of this show as you watch it, I am sure you will have a good time. Do not take it seriously, as none of the people who made it did.

Best parents confirmed? But for real. I doubt many people will see reviews like this as it will disappear among all others, but please DO NOT be influenced by 'top' reviews. People (hard trying critiques) who wrote them should be ashamed as most people will most likely see only theirs. How they are saying, it's next isekai anime, but i feel like most of them didn't even bother with watching it, instead they have their mind setted right after reading tags. Of course to be fair it is not next one of "top of the season" category and i doubt in few years anyone will still remember it. It's not the masterpiece japanese gods bless us rarely..... BUT it's good and there is nothing more to add. Simple as that. I do too feel like at this point i watched hundreds of isekai animes, especially with protagonist being famous Mao or with him being the main villian. And without a question of the first kind.... but even if so, i honestly give it a 10. Why? Becauase it had no big flaws. Was enjoying and make me binge-watch it even if it was getting late when i started it. Really good art and animations, it gave quite us quite deeper plot (also good and quite uique for this quanity of isekai animes we have). Characters were also really likeable and even music was pretty good (with few (original? probably yes, but didn't confirm it) songs insterted into story). I know i'm quite optimistic after these years when it's about scoring titles. But if anime was really enjoyable, didn't it succeded in it's task? Unless anime didn't lack on art, maybe had some really annoying character or something else, in my eyes it deserves to get that 10. I understand we need also people with more "crude" system so Kimi No Na Wa wouldn't be next to some 3rd grade isekai anime, but still... at this moment scores on first visible reviews are 3, 3, 3, 2... For real? This anime really does deserves higher one. If you are, especially, an isekai veteran, you will enjoy it :) (Still i'm glad main score is quite high at the moment 7.42 and #1838 place in ranking so it says something. Well i'm aware mostly try hards (like me :P) most often go to reviews section~)
Machine_of_Ice
TL;DR Super dumb but worth watching. Characters are fantastic and the show sells itself and self-aware very well. Has some decent writing outside of the overall plot. Dumb is a pretty hard thing to get right in any medium. The line between self-awareness and incompetence is rather blurry to your standard audience and is often best left untouched unless the creator knows exactly what they’re doing. Suppose the author is self-aware enough to know that what they’re doing is, by whatever objective means of criticism exist, bad, but that’s the joke. Even if that’s the case, getting the audience to understand and go along with the joke is a tricky thing, and some members may simply be too dense to ever understand what you’re doing. Even if what you’ve made is secretly genius. Incidentally, genius is one word that could be used to describe your lord and mine, Anos Voldigoad. The Demon Lord of Terror is basically as powerful as a being can be without actually being a god, which he’s apparently technically still subservient to though he does consider himself enough of a peer of theirs to attempt to broker deals and whatnot with them. In fact, Anos is so powerful he could probably actually beat Saitama. Quite the resume. And yet he doesn’t feel the slightest bit unbelievable. As he begins to almost single-handedly upset the established order of the world he left behind 2000 years ago once he discovered how much of a dog’s breakfast his descendants had made of everything, I wasn’t annoyed. I wasn’t rolling my eyes so far back into my skull that I could see my brain writhing in pain, as I thought I should be doing as a critic. No, I had a big stupid grin on my face as Anos boldly proclaims how foolish his enemies were to think they ever stood a chance. Conventional wisdom in plot criticism holds that this shouldn’t work. Power-fantasy stories are often disdained, and for good reason: their entire reason for existing is to tap into the desires of their often disenfranchised audience and give them the kind of power rush they crave, usually at the sacrifice of the plot or characters making sense, or otherwise squandering the story’s or character’s potential. An oft-cited example of this in action is Kirito from SAO (dead horse, I know, but he’s just such a well-known example): specifically, the complaint that he’s too boring, as he was written in a very general way so as to be a blank slate the viewer can easily identify with him and experience his power moments as their own. Anos Voldigoad is nothing at all like Kirito. Anos is very much his own person. He has very clearly defined goals that are unique to him and the life he’s lived, not vague and designed to be relatable; for instance, contrary to the normal traits of demon lord characters in Japanese fiction, Anos’ last act before disappearing was to sacrifice himself to create a lasting peace in the world so that all people, demon and human and others alike, could live peaceful and fulfilling lives. Anos’ power has a huge impact on the person he was and the person he would become once the main story starts. He’s extremely confident at all times when he’s on screen, which not only makes him look cool, but firmly establishes him as his own person. A character like Kirito could never be portrayed as unerringly confident as Anos is without taking the risk of alienating their target audience, who need someone with at least some vulnerability that they can relate to. In short, he’s not strictly someone to relate to, he’s someone people aspire to be like, if only they were able. The only reason he’s as relatable at all is because he’s almost immediately labeled an outsider upon reincarnating. He’s born into the lower caste of demon society (a caste structure he didn’t make) and the exam at the Demon Lord Academy isn’t capable of accurately assessing his power and mislabels him into the lowest possible category, which basically means society hates him. From there, the story’s direction is obvious: Anos must prove everyone wrong and make society good again. So why doesn’t he just do this immediately? I’m certain everyone had this question once the extent of his power level is revealed, especially since it only escalates as the story progresses. The story never answers this: please refer to the first paragraph of this review, this is where the dumbness comes in (if this question disrupts your suspension of disbelief too much, here’s a good external answer for you: Anos is smart enough to get information before acting. Thank goodness he’s not omniscient, otherwise he literally would be a god). Here’s another biting question: Why doesn’t every evil SOB who challenges Anos immediately realize just how out of his league – nay, galaxy – they are? No answer for this one either, I can’t even figure a hypothetical one out. The story isn’t exactly made of Kevlar, it’d be more accurate to say it’s made of straw that wilts when it’s stared at. OK, sorry, I lied, it’s even worse than that. Very few things make sense when they happen because new powers are pulled out of the ether and the writers’ asses since the magic system is abstract enough that they can do that, though the writers apparently shared Anos’ confidence and just go forward acting as though everything is fine. You could fill a book just by tearing this plot apart, and I’m confident you’ll see just that somewhere on this very page. I’m being very positive about this show despite all this, and even I eventually started shaking my head at the absolutely dumbfounding lengths they went to to make this all come together. I gotta respect it in some ways, I guess. Mysteriously, however, the writing is otherwise very good. Not the plot, but everything else is great. I can’t speak to the light novel at all, only that it appears to be the author’s only published work as of now. The main director has previously directed Prisma Ilya and, more recently, Bofuri, in the past, with both being rather entertaining shows in a similar vein of dumbness to this one, with a particularly strong main cast. Misfit’s other main characters are also an entertaining bunch, but notably they all have a great deal of depth as well. The twin sisters Misha and Sasha have an extremely engrossing arc early on in the show and remain great throughout. Each side character’s time in the limelight is used very effectively; rest assured, each will stay with you from episode to episode, even if you only watch from week to week as I did. A testament to the writing’s quality is how it solves the problem of the unstoppable protagonist. Since there’s clearly no way Anos could ever possibly lose, how does each episode’s conflict remain exciting? The answer lies in the creative ways each enemy is dispatched or the problem is otherwise handled. Yes, you know Anos is going to win, but how, pray tell, is he going to win? The answer is usually not the enemy dying in a fiery explosion: villains are only ever punished in karmic ways, for instance, no one ever just dies and that’s it. Even when death is final, there’s always more of an impact than just someone dying; the character stays with the viewer in some way. The world building is completely bonkers. It reminds me a lot of Fate in a weird way, which I think is likely because of the way it’s told. Previous events whose relevance is off the beaten path are only ever brought up when relevant to the main plot, and we’re only ever given enough context to understand that single event, nothing before or after. Thus, this world’s past must be pieced together like a puzzle throughout the show if you want to understand the whole thing, but the idea that this world has a storied and illustrious past is conveyed well nonetheless and does its job of making the history seem real. The ending is as an ending should be: a microcosm of everything the show stood for. The wilted straw skeleton of the plot all but collapses as all the hype moments the writers built up (and som…

The surprise smash-hit of the Summer 2020 that ends up being mediocre at best. I understand why people liked this anime. It is a magic high school anime where the MC is borderline comically overpowered. Add on to that the gimmick of everybody doubting he MC’s strength, and you get a proven anime formula. I have seen people compare this anime to great anime like One Punch Man, but I do not believe that to be a fair comparison at all. One Punch Man becuase it has great action, comedy, character writing, character design, worldbuilding, etc. The Misfit of Demon King Academy has none of these things. If I were to compare Demon King Academy’s appeal to another anime, I would instead point to the conclusion of the revenge arc in The Rising of the Shield Hero. That end of that arc was built up for 19 episodes or so and gave the viewers the vindictive pleasure of seeing those who wrong the main character punished. Imagine that, but it happens in every single episode. That is the appeal of The Misfit of Demon King Academy. Now, you as a reader may say that this is a good thing because you enjoyed the conclusion of Shield Hero’s revenge arc. However, that is overlooking all of the episodes Shield Hero spent building up that pleasure when those people got what was coming to them. The Misfit of Demon King Academy has none of that build up. It’s system goes like this: 1) A character is introduced and is a complete asshole to Anos (our main character). 2) Anos whoops them and gives them a “justified” punishment. 3) Rinse and repeat. These revenge formulas can be rewarding if they are properly built up and happen on occasion. But when the entire appeal of your anime depends on repeating the same formula over and over again, it just feels unhealthy. It feels like I am watching this to get recreationally angry and seeing pleasure from someone else’s pain. I really cannot think of anything else that this anime is supposed to offer. Everything else is so forgetable or mediocre. The art, world, music, characters, action, and voice acting are all standard for these kinds of trashy magic high school anime. One thing that I can appreciate about this anime is that Anos is a tolerable main character. He does respectable actions (when he isn’t doing his sadistic punishments) and is a decent guy most of the time. I can’t say that I liked any of the side characters though, I especially did not like his little fan club that sings literally 4 songs about him during the season’s runtime. I cringed everytime that they did it because it felt like a desparate attempt to get the audience to cheer for Anos too. Don’t expect too much going into this anime. I know it is pretty hot right now, but I think that is only because the past 2 seasons have been pretty weak as far as new anime are concerned. It is just a below average anime with a proven gimmick. It’s a solid 4.

Not gonna lie everything was shitty I only stuck around to find out who the hell was the fake demon king. Well I suffer watching and waiting for the reveal of the fake demon king. I seriously was about to pull off my hair from my head because I had to go through so much bullshit to get to ep 12. The animation was good along with the art style but what i hate was everything from story, sound and characters i hated it. This is one of those anime that where good animation and art was wasted on. I don't want to be one of those that say they are the same to N anime because that's wrong i would say it was similar.
_ecchiman_
Ya boi ecchiman is back with a review after many moons of absence. This looks like an easy one to do. I think this anime has gotten a bit of bad rep but you gotta consider why you’re watching this anime in the first place. Lets start with the title “Misfit at Demon Academy” or whatever. Something to that extent. Where have we seen this title before? Oh, in just about every other OP MC/ fantasy magic school title ever. Now why are you watching it? Because you enjoy dat shit bro. So enjoy it. You already half know what you’re gonna get out of it already. So why front. Don’t go into this anime expecting some intricate storytelling with an exquisite plot that you already know that its not going to have. Essentially, don’t go into this anime expecting it to fail per your standards, and it’ll be (so far) a damn good ride. STORY: 7 The story is good. Its not great, its not amazing, but its definitely not bad either. Its engaging, has a decent plot, set up, and atmosphere, and the world thats created feels like, 75% genuine. So pretty good. Of course, where it fails mostly is that its not anything new. We’ve seen stories like this before, and we’ve seen the progression of those stories. These follow nearly the same standards. But, you shoulda already knew that going into it, its part of that genre. You don’t expect an ecchi anime to be wholesome, or a horror anime to be a romcom. This story, although good, is nothing new. But you knew that already right. So 7 for good plot. If there were uncensored titties I woulda bumped it to an 8. But alas, seemingly devoid of ecchi. ART: 9 The art is great. No two ways about it. Animation is crisp, colors are great, and they complement the story and each other well. No clashing colors on the same uniform. I would even daresay that the art actually makes the story much easier to digest. Easy to identify characters. It does suffer from the whole everyone-but-the-MCs-look-the-same syndrome, but its not too pronounced. But yea. No complaints here. Except, again, would have been a 10/10 if there were uncensored titties. Or ass. But I digress. Sound: 9 During the anime episodes, nothing special to write home about. Musical tones and chords supplement the atmosphere and don’t detract too much from the overall story. Helps the watcher piece together/make sense of how one should feel. But its as it should be. I still rate it pretty highly because I actually was vibin with the OP, something I NEVER EVER do. Sorry, I’m a serial OP/ED skipper. Character: 7 Lets be honest, this is the same schtick as the plot. You know whats gonna happen already. You know who’s gonna be like what already. I mean, OP MC with hidden power? Seen that. OP MC that makes a harem? Done before. So in line with those standards, these characters are pretty good. I would knock it down a peg for the pretty generic harem that springs up around our MC, they’re like all the same WITHIN THE ANIME, WITHOUT REGARD TO OTHER SIMILAR ANIME. So some points down for that. Also, that harem is annoying and doesn’t advance the plot much. But all the other characters? Good. Not much in terms of development, but come on. You didn’t come here to watch development, you came here to watch some foo kick some major ass. I will say though, this is the first time that I’ve encountered a reincarnated demon king that actually cares for his/her surrogate parents, so props to the story/character writing for that. Enjoyment: 10 If i came into this anime expecting it to fail, I wouldn’t be writing this review. But since I came into this anime expecting to watch some dude absolutely annihilate everyone, this is nothing short of a 10 in the enjoyment category. I enjoy the shit outta this anime. Just the right balance of story, action, tension and also a cool sense that everything is gonna be alright. Overall: 9 “The best part of the vacay isn‘t the end, but what you did during it ” - Some Dude, idfk. Mebbe its me. With an anime like this, you already know the destination. MC PREVAILS. Thats the destination. Kinda like every fiction book you read as a kid, adolescent, even young adult. And I’m not talking about some Brönte Wuthering heights book, I’m talking like James Patterson because I enjoy reading books book. The journey is the best part of this anime, like all good fiction books. How does MC get to the prevailing? It just so happens that in this anime, its badass buttkicking. And boy is it some good buttkicking. So overall 9. I kinda forgot how I used to do the whole math thing with these reviews, but I’ll give it a shot anyways (who’m i kiddin’ of course I remember). Uhm... 2 for art and 2 for the characters that I like, 2 points for the badassery of an OP MC, and 3 points for enjoyment= 9 overall. Peace.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy, overpowered character, I know some people might not like it and some might like it but I think this anime is very different to others anime like "Overlord" and "The god of high school". Anos has the power to destroy everyone and prove he's the Demon Lord but he chose to play with them, be part of them in order to prove it and helping his classmate and friend to improve and be stronger. He's a person with pride but different compared to the noble, he doesn't discriminate the Hybrid. I love the anime with simple story but interesting in the same time. No one believes he's the demon king except a couple of them and Anos want to protect the peace life of all human and demon. I just finished this anime and the ending wasn't disappointing at all. Was one of the most simple and happy ending I've seen, everyone acknowledged he's the real demon king and Anos went back to his normal life with his family like nothing special happened. This anime just keep surprising me with the power of Anos, the way he's thinking and how others character's reveal their secret, the way the author surprise us are so unexpected which makes me like this anime. I don't think this anime will have a season 2.... BUT I HOPE THERE WILL BE :D by surprising us like the author did in this anime

The Misfit of Demon King is a generic seasonal anime, however as the anime industry always keep reminding us, even generic plot and settings can become something really good when well executed, and that's definitely the case here. The show doesn't try to be what it isn't, so I doesn't try to hide the fact that the protagonist is absolutely OP, instead it incorporates this fact into the plot, not only to create jokes, but also to explain the world building and why the world is in the current state. As the caracters you'll find the typical cliches, a tsundere fire girl, a kuudere ice girl and so go on, the difference here is that they are much more reasonable than in other cliche anime, their actions have motivations and most of the cast has character development, so this is big point in favor of this anime. But the real core of this anime is that it never stops. Plot twists, battles sequences and world building happens one after another, making a very fluid development, and very enjoyable to watch. In conclusion, if you have no problem with all the cliche baggage that this anime has, you'll be rewarded with a good execution and fluid plot, with very enjoyable moments and characters. 9/10

Within anime certain shows like Seraph of the End are sometimes hindered by anime conventions, most commonly taking place in a school. This is most likely due to, what I refer as the myth of the target audience, because as we all know a teenagers only wants to hear stories happening to other teenagers and thus must take place in a school. And this is alike for The Misfit of Demon King Academy as well. The basic plot is that 2000 years ago the demon lord, Anos Voldigoad, decided for the good of humanity to made a deal with the human hero Kanon. They would sacrifice their own lives to ensure peace could flourish, additionally 2000 years later that he and Kanon would be resurrected. After the resurrection, Anos comes to a new world where he is enrolled into the demon king academy; A highly hierarchically school with a harry potter style blood purity culture. The school holds a reverence for the demon king, however when someone tells him that the demon king was named Avos Dilhevia he realises something’s wrong. What then ensues is a mystery attempting to uncover what has happened over the past 2000 years for this mistake to happen. What seems to be a genuinely interesting mystery is however squandered. The show is a fever dream. Moments seem connected with no real meaning. Themes are taken nowhere very quickly by a protagonist that seems to be lost in simultaneously a mystery and incredibility dull school drama and comedy. Alongside all this we have a school setting that is incredibility underused, mind numbing and practically useless to the story. The show has practically no charm, it’s absurd and over the top but it doesn’t stick the landing. Even if it did it would still be drug down by everything else. Throughout my time watching all I could think of was the show Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, which also has a perfect character overcoming any problem, in that shows case it aims to be a comedy and thus the audience is aware of what's to come and so his being perfect doesn’t clash or harm the story. The Misfit of Demon King Academy however has large juxtapositions in the story as it will fluctuate from a boring an out-of-nowhere romance to a mystery and Anos being perfect hinders any growth or interest from the viewer as he seems to treat everything with a calm disregard. Anos Voldigoad is a shell of a character that does nothing but make absurd statements that at first make you a laugh a bit but as time goes on makes you wonder whether these comments are meant to be played straight and that question is never answered. He somewhat parallels Jin-Woo of Solo Leveling except there's no way one can contort themselves into thinking anything he does is cool. Anos’ power if fundamental to the show and his ability to do whatever he wants is important as the story warps and bends to whatever he wants it to do. This however isn’t the same in the animation. The show isn’t a collection of stills, but it also isn’t like watching Disney's Snow White at it’s premiere. In a show about awesome power it must therefore have animation that conveys that too, however often during the show the poses and movement are stiff but convey enough that they are not lifeless at least. The series has a lot of action but much of is very forgettable except for a handful of scenes in the latter half and even those often end up losing quality near the end of the fights. A interesting camera angle will be ruined by a stiff pose or a great fight may decide that without any skill Anos should win and thus he does but this is never animated in an interesting way. Every-setup in the show is not paid off, a common theme of the show is destiny and how many of them are slaves to it, accepting it as if there is no way to change it. In all cases like this Anos uses his power to, sometimes literately, fight the god of time and change time. Once Anos changes the persons future it is practically never mentioned and the person does not now take their new perspective/chance to live a fulfilling life to explore and grow as a character but they instead stay the same and join out main character to form a bland and forgettable cast of characters that feels forced and has no chemistry. The Misfit of Demon King Academy is a bland and lifeless story that doesn’t go anywhere. In it’s attempts to do anything it fails. Nothing in the work is developed and thus everything is left surface level and goes nowhere. It follows many trappings of similar anime and does not do it well. All in all it is not worth anyone's time unless you explicitly want a bad time.

ChatGPT recommended this to me when I went looking for a power fantasy anime similar to Solo Leveling. *Theoretically*, this series should be an almost perfect fit for me -- it has a competent protagonist, the aforementioned power fantasy with an overpowered hero, a supporting cast of cute girls, and a mystery-thriller undercurrent as to who's manipulating things behind the scenes. Yet I found this to be fairly mediocre for most of the runtime. This review is an attempt to answer why that is. There's a LOT of corniness undergirding practically every arc. The first arc involves the two girls, Misha and Sasha, being on bad terms with each other. The big reveal is that this is fake in the typical anime "I love you so much I'll pretend to hate you so you'll forget me" way. They thought they had a problem that could only be solved this way, yet the protagonist Anos shows up and fixes their problem with a snap of his fingers, whereupon they immediately start gushing over each other (and him). It's all very cheesey, and this is hardly the only example I could give. Towards the end of S1 there started to be more and more mentions of "defeating our enemies through the power of friendship!" that caused me to roll my eyes. The action scenes were another dull point. There's lots of the typical anime "you can't hurt me, I have an everything proof shield" followed by "ah, but I have a super ultra skill that *annihilates* your everything proof shield!!!" Any power fantasy will need action scenes to demonstrate the protagonist's power, but the purpose of an action scene for a power fantasy is different than it is for e.g. a battle shonen. There are nuanced differences between the two that this show doesn't seem to grasp, and as someone who does not particularly care for battle shonens, I found the action to be rather boring. The power fantasy itself is also fairly unsatisfying. Anos is completely OP, and there are a steady stream of people underestimating him and promptly getting their face pushed in. Before watching this show, I thought this was all that was really needed to have a good power fantasy. After watching this, though, my opinion has changed. You definitely need more -- I think it's probably intrinsically more satisfying to watch someone who gains power over time rather than one who starts at the max level, and having lore about milestones, ranks, titles, etc. are also important to serve as metrics for how far the character has grown. This show lacks that, as Anos just shows up in episode 1 as an unstoppable badass right from the get-go. His power doesn't really feel earned like it does in Solo Leveling or Mushoku Tensei, and we don't get the RPG-esque satisfaction of a character going back and trouncing an opponent that once gave him trouble. This show isn't terrible. It's making an earnest attempt and has a clear goal it's striving towards, it's just not particularly well-executed, and then it falls back on corny anime tropes to make things worse. There are some parts that are better. The mystery about who's controlling things behind the scenes is boring for most of the season but has a decent conclusion at the end of S1. There's also a revenge scene when someone attacks Anos' mother that's surprisingly brutal, which I enjoyed. Yet while these occasional positive aspects were enough to keep me from condemning this show as outright "bad", they weren't enough to make me want to continue to season 2 any time soon.

I really wanted to love The Misfit of Demon King Academy: History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants (I don’t know why that title is so long) The anime looks really interesting on the surface. But beneath that its kinda nonsensical and not very interesting. I like all the characters. I just find the plot itself to not be that interesting. And the villains aren't interesting. So as a result i was not able to get sucked into the story or even really care about the results. The main character is really cool but they made him too powerful where he can basically do anything including controlling time and death. At first it kinda felt like they were going for some humor. OP main characters work when its comedy and you're not supposed to take it too seriously. But overall everything is played straight and serious and it just doesn’t work.

It's your typical/generic reincarnation anime with a way too OP character that literally gives Saitama a run for his money. And there's nothing wrong with that. What gives it a little bump in rating is that it does well in bringing up the other characters and the lore/world building. The animation and color grading is solid for a full season, and has its moments of pretty decent during fights. 7-8 is a good rating. I gave it an 8 because I still remember it and the plot, which is more than I can say about other generic reincarnations/isekai even if I enjoyed them (thinking about you Wiseman's grandchild and Sage with the weakest crest) All in all it's an anime you can binge in a day if you need the recharge, or take in eps daily without needing to think too much
