I loved Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, I gave it an 8/10! But this show, Yuutousei, does not live up to its predecessor whatsoever. The premise of this show is that it takes the exact same events from Rettousei, dumbs them down, and adds more incest. The best part about Yuutousei, in my opinion, is the sound design, not really a great compliment in perspective of my other ratings since this is a TV series and not a CD. The art is good, but the characters seem flat and one dimensional. This show is a hollow shell of Rettousei with all the goodie scooped out. Yuutousei feels like it exists solely to pander to your nostalgia of Rettousei and has barely any story of its own. I would only recommend you watch Yuutousei if you REALLY like the original Rettousei story and want another perspective, although not a very engaging one.

Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei (2021) First off, if you have not seen the first season of the parent show then do not watch this until you have done so unless you are open-minded. Going into this various people jumped on the 'its a new season then slated the show for being confusing since the story is already well established. This is because it is a spin-off, not the parent story. It does a marvellous job of filling in masses of gaps in the main show to bring us to the end of the first season and slightly beyond. The art of the show is a slightly more... romantic style than the first main season in that it is more user friendly and less serious in a way. It is supposed to show the cuter side because it is from Miyuki's point of view is that she is less stern and proper mostly. The soundtrack is good but nothing too amazing. It holds the same sound as before but just feels a bit recycled with the SFX. At the same time, it fits perfectly since it is filling gaps in something that already happened. The characters are ALL established, they have all been covered before and thus development does happen but not from scratch since we know everyone already. Well, we know the ones we care about. For me the show is a great addition overall, I did wonder if it was really needed rather than continuing the story since most stories are not usually told in 100% detail. It feels slightly like a rehash of the show before. I would say Miyuki as a character is amazing. You also get some real information, you can actually understand the organisation Blanche with how scary those with magic doing as they please must seem to normal people. Overall, it is a very good show, but I honestly would have preferred the show to have just continued than have this. 8/10. Mayumi is the best girl still.

I'm not the biggest fan of the mahouka, and to be blunt, I enjoyed this less than the parent story. It definitely wasn't the worse thing in the world, but it isn't good. The story goes through the enrolment arc and the 9 schools competition arc, mainly through the perspectives of characters such as Miyuki, Honoka, Shizuku and new characters from third highschool. However we barley got to see any other characters, no erika, leo or mizuki. But this is a spin-off thats specifically not about those guys, so i'll let it slide. These new characters; for example Airi, were basically all the same character. Over confident and sure they wouldn't loose. I assume you know what happens when they go against chadsuya's sister. These new characters, while new to the story, really did not add much to the story. It basically just became a 13 episode recap. It also became repetitive seeing the same characterisation occurring throughout the last half of the season, where a character looses and we see their pain. The art style and animation as expected of a spin-off would be of lower quality, however it wasn't bad. It was acceptable and wasn't problematic. While it may sound harsh, I wouldn't say I got bored while watching the show. It's just that I couldn't care less what happened.

This show had so much potential. If Irregular was about his brother Honor could've been about Miyuki. Instead all we get is a generic slice of life with some throw-ins from the main series. I know they could've done something better here, that short flashback on episode 13? Those would've been nice. Explain the secrecy their past, what they've been through. This could've been a perfect setup for another season. Seeing their past through Miyuki's eyes, things she went through during the series. I mean in Irregular we had everything going on in-between his school life and his covert operations, surely Miyuki did more than just go to school during those times? She is after all a member of one of the highest regarded magicians of the country? Look at Saegusa and Jumonji they clearly have something going on behind the scenes outside of the times we see them in Irregular. They could've dove into what Miyuki was actually up to instead of re-telling literally almost every scene just slightly different from Miyuki's angle. I guess in a way they did exactly what it says in the synopsis, but c'mon? Some backstory flashbacks would've made this perfect. There is enough material from their past and flashbacks to account for this.

tl;dr: A spin-off that gives a deeper look at Miyuki and her friends part of the story, but doesn’t really add much to said story. This is a spin off of The Irregular at Magic High School that focuses on Miyuki instead of Tatsuya. It covers the Enrollment and the Nine Schools Competition arcs, which is approximately the first 2/3s of the first season of the main series. While ultimately it covers the exact same story, the elements focused on are pretty different. Furthermore, it glosses over or skips significant portions of the original plot in favor of spending more time focusing on the new content. Understanding the original story is still necessary to understanding the new content however. Thus, this spin off should only be watched after already being familiar with the the first two arcs of the main series. Also, while Miyuki is the main lead in this, she’s focused on a lot less compared to Tetsuya in the main series. Instead, it focuses quite a lot on her friends. This of course includes her friends Honoka and Shizuka, but Eimi as well. Eimi has essentially no presence in the main series but in this she seems to be as close a friend to Miyuki as Honoka and Shizuka, which is somewhat strange. Especially as it tries to write around why she isn’t present during certain story events in order to try to stay consistent with the main series. There’s also a pretty large focus on the girls that compete against them from Third High School in the Nine Schools Competition, who aren’t present at all in the main series as far as I remember. There is an attempt at fleshing out and giving character development to everyone, but with the reoccurring characters it was pretty constrained by not really doing anything beyond the main series which didn’t really have them as a focus. As such it just takes the minor character beats that were already present in the main series and expands on them a bit. It works decently enough, especially if you’re already fans of the characters, but its nothing too major. The new characters were more interesting, mainly Airi and Shiori, which makes sense as the writing had more freedom to do whatever it wanted with them. The Enrollment has a bit of substance, but not much. For the most part it just feels like a speed run of what is in the main series but with more CGDCT in it, which is enjoyable enough I suppose. But the real meat of this spin off is really in the Nine Schools Competition Arc. While the main series focuses on Tetsuya’s amazing capabilities as an engineer, this spin off focuses much more on the girls actually competing. Their motivations, what they went through in training, their bonds with the friends, and their thought process during the actual competition. As such it’s where the girls really shine. There’s still a good amount of focus on Tetsuya being overpowered. It’s different from the main series however in that instead of just showing Tetsuya being overpowered, the focus is on the girls gushing over how awesome he is, which was pretty amusing. Especially with Miyuki as her already strong bro-complex seems to have been cranked up a bit in this. The art is essentially the same as in the main series, though the animation was noticeably weaker unfortunately. The character designs are the same for the most part and solid enough. The highlight character design wise were the new costumes for the competition which were all pretty great. I don’t remember well enough to be absolutely sure they’re new, but at the minimum they’re focused on much more in this. The OP’s visuals and song really grew on me and by the end of the anime I loved it. Even though it plays during the Enrollment Arc as well, it’s entirely focused on the Nine School Competition Arc, which sounds kind of strange but was probably for the best considering that’s the most prominent arc. The ED was also decent enough in terms of the song and visuals. The soundtrack was kind of strange in that it had a lot of great and memorable tracks, but they were used in ways that really didn’t fit at times. As a random tangent, it’s pretty strange how the members of Course 2 basically feel like senpai to the girls in Course 1. I kind of noticed it in the main series, but it’s especially prominent here. A core part of it is of course the relationship between Miyuki and ‘onii-sama’ giving off a certain overpowering vibe. But it kind of applies to the rest of Tetsuya’s friends and Miyuki’s friends as well respectively.

Extremely boring! Honestly, Mahouka was never exactly a profound work or one with exemplary development, but it still managed to hold its own thanks to some specific elements, mainly the protagonist and the certain charm of the universe. As the years passed and my critical sense grew, this became increasingly evident. Even so, I expected at least decent entertainment. Unfortunately, this season manages to be worse than any low expectations I had. Watching this was, without exaggeration, a dragged-out and disheartening experience. It feels more like a canonical spin-off focused precisely on what the original work has that is least interesting. It's like revisiting a series you liked in childhood, only now filtered through all its weakest points and without the elements that compensated for those flaws. The animation is inconsistent, often bordering on generic. It's not a technical disaster, but there's also no moment that truly impresses or justifies the existence of this production. It's all extremely "okay," in the worst possible way. The characters, in turn, are one of the biggest problems. They lack charisma, depth, and purpose. It's difficult to care about any of them, and this weighs even more heavily when the narrative depends precisely on these figures to sustain itself. Without an interesting core, everything quickly falls apart. But the most critical point, without a doubt, is the narrative. It's monotonous, predictable, and above all, boring. There's no real tension, no memorable moments, no build-up that rewards the viewer. The constant feeling is of watching something out of obligation, hoping that at some point it will get good, which never happens. Another serious mistake was leaving aside precisely the element that differentiated Mahouka from other generic titles: the protagonist. Whether you liked him or not, he was the one who carried the work and gave some identity to the story. Without this strong presence, everything is even more exposed as a set of uninspired clichés. In the end, the result is a forgettable, dragged-out, and lackluster season. I don't recommend it unless you have a very high tolerance for slow and unengaging stories. É tudo extremamente “ok”, no pior sentido possível. Nota: 2/10

I wish this site would bring back the reviewers rating number. Very unsatisfactory to read 'mixed feelings.' If you never saw the original, then this show is okay. HOWEVER, having seen it and liked it a lot, this show is a bit of a flop. It endorses so many annoying aspects. Making characters have become gay, extreme focus on sibling love (until otherwise known, read as incest, or maybe they're not blood related?), and a focus on what used to be side characters are now the focus while the lead characters are trivialized. There's also a massive focus on bullies and hierarchal systems to the point of being cringy. So what redeems the show? Sticking to character design. And a vague but recollectable story but told from the "Honor" students perspective instead of the "Irregular" MC's perspective. Oh, and this is available dubbed in English while the original is only subbed. Uh... Yep. That's about it. So in summary: Overall they revamped a good anime into a woke bastardization of the original work by approaching it more from the sister's pov and other side characters. Very much unlike "A Certain Magical Index," that spun off, "Railgun," a series that though overlapped but was consistent and actually followed it's own unique storylines.

Ok so this anime is eh. Lemme explain, imma just make this short. So this anime is basically a recap, all they did was add characters and add to the character development. It's fundamentally flawed, we know exactly what's gonna happen, and unlike other prequel/spinoff anime, that give more exposition or backstory, this doesn't do that. Sure it gives us new characters, but you can't really root for them, because in the original story, they were nobodies. Slap some overdramatic characters with a op character (that we know will lose), you get this show. The only redeeming quality is the growth of existing characters and how their relationships were built. Also fanservice ;) They did a good job in the pacing, action and music, but like I said, it's just hard to enjoy this show.

At first I thought it's needless. Just the repeat of the main story with a so much worse graphic. I had to stop watching for a while to get used to it. After you get used to the graphics and watch a few episodes, you will notice that yes, this is the same story, but from a different point of view. So many people give it a bad review just because they can't handle it separately from the main series, but if you forget about the main story, of course not completly because you need the knowledge from it to completly understand the happenings, and think of it seperatly, as a whole new serie, than you even can call it good. Because it's still interesting and can give new joy to the original. As a stand-alone, it could score pretty high, it's the need to compare them that really lowers the score. And of course the the graphic, its reall really bad. At least for the male lead, the others don't have big differences, but Tatsuya's... So yes, it can be really enjoyable, but you have to take it with a grain of salt.

In short, if you like "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei / The Irregular at Magic High School" you will like this as well. It is pretty much required to first watch that, the main show, before starting this. This is more backstory and details regarding that main story, mostly from Miyuki's perspective. The story starts at the same point as the main show, joining the magic school, and goes all the way through the competition between schools. It jumps around a lot though. This is why watching the main show first is pretty much mandatory. The art and VA is the same as the main show I'd say which is good, because that avoids confusion and they were great there anyways. There is a bit too much focus on the brother/sister love thing here, more than in the main show. Some conversations are also slightly different than in the main show. Maybe that is because this is from Miyuki's perspective. This is how she remembers it so to say. Overall it's very good, but there is still room for improvement. And I can't wait to see how the 3rd season from the main show turn out. Score: 8/10

The Honor Student at Magic High School is a surprisingly alright anime. It is supposed to retell the story of The Irregular at Magic High Schoool but does a great job at not repeating the exact same thing and actually manages to add quite a bit to the story. The story is the exact same as in The Irregular at Magic High School and you need to watch that anime before watching this one since otherwise nothing that is happening will make much sense. Especially in the first five episodes, the anime suffers from awful pacing jumping from event to event and skipping anything already discussed in Irregular at Magic High School. From episode six onwards however this anime starts being solely about the nine schools competition. It introduces a cast of characters from 3rd high school and starts retelling the nine schools competition with more detail and interesting opponents. There is a bit of fanservice as well but it's clearly not the main focus of the anime. The characters are all female characters of significance of the Irregular at Magic High School minus Erika and Mizuki. Along with Miyuki characters that receive way more attention this time are Shizuku, Honoka and Eimi. Four characters from Third high school are also introduced and play a supporting role in the anime. They are all interesting enough and have personality. Ichijou's personality is changed to serve as comedic relief but he rarely shows up so it doesn't impact the story a lot. The animation and voice acting are both good. The sound was surprisingly good and the music adds to the anime and makes it more enjoyable to watch. Overall The Honor Student at Magic High School is a good retelling that avoids repeating the main anime and instead carves out its own story. Even though the first half suffers from poor pacing the anime makes up for it in the second half. It introduces interesting new characters and has good animation and great sound. Overall it's likely you'll enjoy this anime if you liked the Irregular at Magic High School, unless your reason for watching that was Tatsuya.

Not sure why all these reviews are written by people that didnt like the Parent show so here is a review from someone who objectivly likes the series and can still tell you the faults. TLDR Its the same fun but with a little less action and alot more comedy. -MINOR SPOILERS-MINOR SPOILERS-MINOR SPOILERS-MINOR SPOILERS-MINOR SPOILERS- STORY If you enjoyed the Parent show then you're of course going to like this show that is the events of the Original Series but told from the "Side Characters" perspective, i use Commas here because in my opinion all the Characters in the series are really interesting but more on that later. The story adds alot of finer details to the story as well as what the other characters are thinking an example of this is when Tatsuya is attacked buy the Glasses guy at the school while he was on patrol and how the Girls (Honoka, Eimi and Shizuku) try to solve the mystery of the guys identity gettin into conflict along the way, another example is during the Sports events when the investigate the "Accidents" Overall it was extremly enjoyable. ART The art is what you would expect froma modern anime, it was crisp and the magic looks amazing as always, the animation of Miyuki dancing and flying during the sporting event is also alot better than the original. SOUND Again as you would expect, does it stand out as the greatest sound design in a series, no but its still good again especially the magic sounds. CHARACTER The best part of Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei is that all the characters are unique and relevent, the series gives you more of the team you love so whats not to like, the Series also introduces the 3rd High students who the 1st high girls go against in the sports and the are also amazing and lovable characters with their own personailties and depth, i really hope we see more of those characters in the future as they deserve to be shown more. ENJOYMENT Overall enjoyment is high however there could be some problems or not depending on your view point, first of all there isnt alot of Violent action in the series apart from flashbacks from what you have already scene but there are a few new ones that i enjoyed but id still argue this series isnt as action heavy as the first season and especially not when compared to the "Visitor Arc" 2nd there is alot more Comedy in this season, i found it well placed and found it enjoyable especially the Comedic duo that is Watanabe and Saegusa when the are taking like hearted jabs at the Shiba pair for these relationship, the Gag this season is the duo acting out what the siblings are doing but in a more dramatic way whilst trying to impersonate their voices which had me cracked up. OVERALL If you enjoyed all the other installments of the series then of course you're going to enjoy this, if you didnt surprise surprise you wont like this either, not sure why you'd watch the techinically 3rd season of something you hate just to leave it a bad revies but who knows these days.

I don't have much to say about Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei, going into it I was hoping it'd be a sort of alternate view of season 1 but it was it's own thing and it was just so boring. They also focused a lot on the one thing everybody hated in season 1, which was the brother and sister hinted incestual relationship for whatever reason, it was just kind of annoying to watch. That being said it wasn't offensively bad just incredibly boring and I don't think it had any real redeeming qualities. I wouldn't recommend this even if you've seen the original show as it just adds nothing.

This anime is terrible by any means; though not good either. The story is watered down and is missing some key scenes for context, but there is some new scenes that help a bit with the original story and gives more character development to the main character of this anime. The sound the best part of this anime with the musical choice fits right in with the current action that's going on. The art is decent as well but it seems to have some blurriness with the picture quality (might just be me). The only problems I really have is that the upped the incest bits which I am not very fond of. This also feels very fanservicey (but if you like that good for you I guess) since the OP and ED reflect this sentiment. Speaking of the OP/ED they're pretty good music wise but as I stated earlier tend to feature the fanservice as the overall themes in them (especially the ending theme). Overall, don't watch this without watching the original.

Overall: 7/10 I feel like the events of this series should have been included in the other two seasons of Mahou Koukou no Rettousei. It adds much needed context and side characters, without which the plot of the original series seems to ring hollow. If you've already watched the other two seasons, watching this show helps you to understand the magnitude of the changes brought about the school by Tatsuya from the POV of average person in this world. It also gives life to Third High school, for whom previously only two male characters were given any screentime. I appreciate this, because the tournament arc in the original did suffer from us viewers not knowing anything about the other participants. The one major event that stood out was the dueling event that Tatsuya participated in, and mainly because we were introduced to the two men from Third High school. The big problem is that we already know how all these events get resolved. So while I am glad that they give so much emotional depth to different characters, especially Airi, it feels like they're stuck in a struggle they can never win. It is especially vexing to watch the characters we know win thanks to Tatsuya's plot-given cheat powers and skills. So it feels bittersweet to me. There is also no escaping the fact that the major events are covered in detail in the original show, so this one is stuck walking a line between being a SoL anime and being an action anime. It ends up falling short of both and only serves to boost Tatsuya in the eyes of the audience. If you enjoy the endless Tatsuya circlejerk, this show is good. Otherwise it gets monotonous real fast. Had the events of this series been included in the original, it may have given a lot of depth to the series. By itself, both shows lose out.
