Time to look at one of the many shorts that come before the Pokemon movies. Story: While it's nothing special, it didn't really have to be. It's a 1-time short that just needed a clear beginning, middle, and end, which it did have. While not very engaging, it accomplished what it needed to do. Art: Considering this comes right before the 2nd Pokemon movie, I'm glad that they didn't try to put a whole lot of focus on making this one look amazing and instead, just went with an art style that makes a lot of things look like they came out of a children's storybook and also the same art style used for the show. This does work and can actually get some amazing shots, especially when they stumble upon the area where various water Pokemon live and when the giant tree is blowing in the wind. Sound: Most of the sound is just the various Pokemon voices, which is OK. It's not as ear-grating as it could be and actually sounds beautiful at certain points when a lot of them sing together. There's also a few pretty good songs in this short, so that's always a plus. Character: Most of the short is spent showing how all of the different Pokemon can live and work together, which is great to see since the show doesn't do episodes like this that often and it's a rarity to see Pokemon do more in the movies besides just battle. Enjoyment: Taking it at what it is, which is a short about as long as an episode from the show, it's pretty entertaining. While not action packed like the movie that follows, it gets your spirits up before you begin to watch the full length feature.

A charming but easily forgettable special Pokémon: Pikachu Tankentai is another one of those short films in the franchise that sidelines the trainers and focuses solely on the Pokémon. As with other specials of this type, there's no conventional dialogue, as all communication is done through the Pokémon's own sounds and names. Because of this, there's no need to worry about subtitles or dubbing, since the story is told almost entirely through actions, expressions, and visual situations. The plot is quite simple and follows Pikachu and several other Pokémon trying to rescue a group of Exeggcute who end up in danger during a strong storm. It's a rather childish narrative, focused on friendship, cooperation, and solidarity, exactly as expected from this type of special. There are no major conflicts or plot twists, just a light adventure that seeks to convey a positive message. The animation is competent, but far from being one of the franchise's highlights. The settings are pleasant, the Pokémon maintain the classic anime look, and the entire production possesses that characteristic charm of the early years of Pokémon. Even without being technically impressive, everything is colorful and creates a very comfortable viewing experience. The greatest merit of this special lies precisely in its cuteness. Seeing various Pokémon interacting with each other, helping one another, and facing the difficulties of the storm creates several endearing moments. Pikachu continues to be extremely charismatic, and the other Pokémon manage to convey personality even without speaking like humans. It's the kind of content made to bring a smile to the viewer's face. On the other hand, precisely because it's so simple, the short ends up being rather unmemorable. The story is quite basic, the challenges are resolved quickly, and when it ends, it feels like just a small extra episode. There's no truly remarkable moment that makes this special stand out from the other shorts featuring Pokémon. It's also content that adds practically nothing to the main universe of the series. Those who decide not to watch it won't miss any important information for following the anime or the movies. Its function is simply to offer a few minutes of fun for those who like to see Pokémon living adventures without the presence of their trainers. Ultimately, Pokémon: Pikachu Tankentai delivers exactly what it promises. It's a short, light, fun, and quite cute special, ideal for fans of the franchise who want to spend some time seeing Pokémon in different situations. It doesn't have a major impact on the story or unforgettable moments, but it manages to entertain throughout its duration. Rating: 6/10. Worth watching as extra content, especially for those who enjoy the shorts starring Pikachu and his friends, but don't expect anything more than a simple and enjoyable adventure.
