Lord of Mysteries

One thing I think people need to understand, is that you really have to watch the whole thing before reviewing it. Judging the anime too early, especially based on the first few episodes, doesn’t give you the full picture of what it’s building toward. LOTM is a story that takes its time establishing its world, characters, mysteries, and overall atmosphere. A lot of the details introduced early on become more meaningful as the story progresses, so watching everything before forming an opinion makes a huge difference. The world-building, mystery, characters, animation, and storytelling all come together incredibly well. There are moments that might seem confusing or slow at first, but they’re often setting up something important later. That’s why I think giving a review before finishing the anime is unfair. You’ll be suprised how everything connects in the end.

LN reader here The first few episodes are fast paced and gloss over details which are thoroughly covered in the book. At first, I thought the series would be a failure due to its incomprehensibility. Characters weren't well fleshed out and watchers couldn't really understand them. However, as soon as episode 6 came out, this all changed. If you're gonna watch this, you will need to pay very close attention during the first 5 episodes and may even need to rewatch some of them to fully understand everything but it's worth it in the end. 9/10 because even though the latter part of the season was a 10/10, the first part was a 7/10. Also, for anyone unaware, LOTM has gotten 5 seasons confirmed because of its popularity in China and this is well regarded as the worst book in the series (so there's much, much better to come).

This is a show with a refreshingly complex narrative and unique approach to the isekai genre. I can understand some westerners’ frustrations with the storytelling as it follows a nonstandard storytelling architecture and certainly doesn’t try to hold your hand and walk you through every new concept the moment they come up the way most other shows intended for western audiences would. However it seems that was without a doubt the intention of the writers. The animated series isn’t written from the third person “observer oriented” narrative that is usually presented to western audiences, rather it is written from the perspective of the protagonist. This gives a unique atmosphere of mystery and wonder to the story that would disappear if we went through the tired trope of having things explained to us all the time. This unique take on a rather standard isekai was achieved by the writers posing the question “how would someone really react if their consciousness got dropped into the mind of someone in another world?” This sets the stage for viewers to have the chance to learn about this world in a refreshingly organic way, one which to my knowledge is unique to this series. While this other shows would have completely explained their magic and class systems in the preface to their first episode to avoid confusion for some of their viewers, the writers opted to place the viewer in the protagonist's shoes. The protagonist, dropped into a confusing situation in an unknown world scrambles to find answers in a panic, as anyone would. “Where am I?!” “What’s going on?!” “Wait whose body is this? “Wait magic is REAL?! Hold on how does this work…” You find yourself asking the same questions as the protagonist around the same time and as he starts trying to work through them the answer usually only gets revealed when the protagonist finds the info himself. The protagonist eventually realizes that he would likely be in danger if others found out what really happened to him. This gives the story an edge of danger to curb the MC’s curiosity giving a solid reason to have our character take his time learning about the world so as not to draw attention. Another pro to this style of story telling is that it allowed the writers to focus more on developing/progressing the story rather than wasting time on exposition. This gave each episode considerable weight. There is rarely any throwaway dialogue and most interactions have substance. All around, this quickly became one of my all time faves and having wrapped up the first season, I can confidently say if they continue with this level of quality and storytelling, this show will come to be a true classic on par with many of the greats of the industry like FMA or GitS. 10/10

I'll start off by saying: - I'm familiar with Chinese anime's generally fast pace - I have watched the show in my native Dub - I'm generally a big fan of "show don't tell" I'd say this has already given me an advantage to understand what's going on in this show as an Anime-only, because I do admit the show doesn't make it easy to understand things. It probably also helped that I watched it with two other people who were as deeply immersed in everything as I was, so we could point each other towards things one might have missed and discussed theories along the way. The only people I can't recommand this show to are those who expect something light and easy here. If you're used to getting every piece of information handed to you on a silver platter AND fed to you on top of it, you will probably have a horrible time with this show. Story: 9/10 The main story is very easy to understand, in my opinion. I connected the dots early on and would say most of it was obvious enough. The setting is right up my alley, and I found the concepts around the powers, entities, and factions very interesting and refreshing. This is easily the most unique Isekai I've ever known, and it just gets more and more exciting and interesting the more you learn. The worldbuilding and symbolism in this show are simply amazing. One minus point for the lack of explanation how exactly the powers work, which in turn makes the circumstances surrounding the protagonist too vague. I do have my theories, but they are just that, theories. I would've also loved to see Klein (MC) interact with his family more. Characters: 9/10 The only reason they are not 10/10 is because it feels a lot like the Donghua left out a lot of of inner monologue and general information that, at some points, made it hard to understand why a character suddenly acts a certain way (mainly the protagonist and his.. uh.. "club") But the characters overall were realistic, everyone had their charm, and they didn't feel one-dimentional at all. Especially Klein is a breath of fresh air as a protagonist, and it's very easy to like him. I didn't get frustrated or annoyed by any character, which is already a remarkable feet in the anime space. I'm generally a fan of the character writing in Chinese anime. They're often more down to earth. I'm too old for the over-the-top acting and humor. The characters are adults and everyone acts their age. I'm also more of a fan of the kind of humor present here. Music & Sound: 10/10 Donghua in general have really unique sound design. They tend to go more into detail. Rustling clothes, clanking amor, etc. It generally sounds more cinematic, the same goes for the music, and the tracks here were beautiful, and the ending song a banger. Art: 10/10 Not even a question. The environment looks straight out of a videogame cinematic trailer, with crazy camera pans, and the quality is at 100% throughout the entire season. The character animations are a tiny bit wonky at times, which is something I'm used to through basically every other Donghua I've watched until now, but I would hardly call it bad, they are still smooth and fast-paced. It's hard to explain. The overall animation was still superb, though. I really loved the art-direction in some scenes, what they did with the colors, the cinematography, the attention to detail. Simply amazing. Overall Enjoyment: 10/10 Did the lack of information dampen my enjoyment of the show? Hardly. There's not much I didn't understand in the first place, and I don't expect all my questions to already get answered in the first season, either. I was left confused here and there, but it was still relatively easy to follow what was going on, which is the most important thing. It's really only the finer details that are still vague (mostly the exact details of how the powers work). The show was an absolute masterpiece in every other way. I loved the setting and concepts from the get-go. It felt a lot like a MOVIE rather than a series. Everything was a breath of fresh air, and I immensely enjoyed finally been given the opportunity to theorize and speculate, to try and UNDERSTAND the world instead of having everything slapped into my face like I'm a 5-year old that can't understand the most basic concepts in a show. It felt so rewarding having my theories proven right later on. Seldom was I this concentrated while watching a show, and equally seldom so invested in understanding every single detail about a world. That being said, I'm really excited for further seasons and hope they will go into more detail about some things. Better late than never.

I struggled with this one. You might see my rating and scratch your head after seeing that statement, and I wouldn't blame you. And yet this is the first anime that made me want to write a review. The fact is, since I didn't read the books before starting this show, I was so confused. Each episode is long, packed with information, and yet still feels rushed. The progression is so quick that you forget concepts they barely had the time to explain. After 3 episodes I was thinking about dropping the show and reading the book instead. But I talked to a friend that knew about the book, and he explained to me things I didn't get at the time, letting me once more focus on the story. Now that doesn't mean the pacing got better, in fact it is rather obvious as you watch the anime that you would have a much better paced experience reading the book, but once you get used to the break neck pace things are going at -and often pause to read subtitles you missed because you were looking at the stunning animation- things get a lot better. Talking about that, yes the animation... Holy shit. This show is beautiful, just as much in the animation as the soundtrack, the storytelling... Where the systems are explained in such a hard to follow way, the characters, their interactions and depth feel both impactful and seamless. It is quite impressive how a show can seem to omit so much about its power system, cramming so much happening in one episode, yet also write characters that perfectly say what needs to be said, often without uttering a word. Hence why I think this probably would be much better in book form, seeing the system get the same attention that the characters did. Ending was beautiful. Overall I gave this show a 9 because, despite its pacing, if you manage to cling onto the rocket fuel powered cartwheel this show is, you'll land among the stars. Now I gotta read the book.

Lord of the Mysteries presents a protagonist who is suddenly isekai’d from the modern world into a parallel universe overshadowed by a sinster crimson moon. The inspiration from Bloodborne is unmistakable. It features one of the most intricate and well-constructed power systems in fiction. The world feels vast and beautiful, yet also dark, unsettling, and gruesome. The most interesting part is the main character, Klein, who is completely different from typical isekai protagonists. Most isekai leads accept their situation as luck or divine destiny and simply adapt to their new life. Klein, however, is obsessed with understanding the logical and mystical mechanisms behind his transmigration and finding a way back to his original world. To achieve this, he must grow stronger while diving deeper into the terrifying and complex Beyonder world. Visually, the show is stunning. The fight scenes are unique and engaging, though the powers can often be confusing due to the rapid pacing and minimal explanations. The sound design is exceptional, and the ending is nearly perfect. As for the story, it clearly hasn’t even scratched the surface yet — but the groundwork is incredibly intriguing, and everything gradually begins to connect. The show introduces an entirely new world packed with complex concepts at a very fast pace, which can overwhelm many viewers. Additionally, the Mandarin voice track may not be suitable for those unfamiliar with the language, though the English dub thankfully does a great job. The worldbuilding in Lord of the Mysteries is extremely rich, but the anime often rushes explanations or leaves them out entirely. Some important details are only clarified in supplementary material like Old Man Neil’s Class. Despite this, the series remains an outstanding adaptation.

It was such a pleasure to watch this donghua. The visuals are incredible. The animation can be a bit stiff at times, but the backgrounds are absolutely stunning - so beautiful, complex, and detailed. Victorian vibe lovers will be instantly mesmerized. I checked some of the negative reviews here, and all I could think was, "the kids these days…" ;) Is it really that hard to think a little, to stay engaged for more than a single TikTok? I hadn’t read the novel or seen anything about this series before watching, and I was hooked from episode 1. Condensing such a huge, well-built world into 13 episodes isn’t easy, but they pulled it off. For me, it was all quite easy to follow after the first 2-3 episodes. The dynamics, history, powers etc. are clear, and I’m in awe of the author for creating such an enormous and intricate world. The story itself is also very interesting - deep and complex, with hidden meanings and mysteries waiting to be uncovered. That’s what makes it so engaging. We don’t know what’s happening because the MC doesn’t either, so we learn alongside him—and I love that. It took me a very long time to watch JJK. Everybody loves it, so I finally did a few months ago, and I was so disappointed. It felt like a wasted opportunity, being shounen instead of seinen. We don’t have that problem here because this is aimed at a mature audience (as one with brutal fights and the deaths of comrades should be). In my opinion, Lord of Mysteries blows JJK away, and I’d place it somewhere close to Shingeki no Kyojin in terms of overall greatness.

D.Gray-man + Hellsing Ultimate + Jujutsu Kaisen + Victorian aesthetics + god themes + strong visuals and music = Lord of Mysteries. Turn your brain off and watch it—you’ll enjoy the ride. There are a few loose threads here and there, but I’m willing to wait for upcoming seasons to fill those gaps. The blend of 2D and 3D art is especially appealing, and the overall presentation feels polished, almost cinematic. Dislikes: The MC feels like a beta character. He rarely uses his prior knowledge to get stronger, doesn’t actively seek power, and mostly just follows orders—which is frustrating. Even after finishing the season, the power system and its different styles remain unclear, and the MC isn’t particularly bright. The pacing is fast, but the themes are confused. It’s tagged as an adult-cast isekai, yet the protagonist often acts like a crybaby. And despite being an isekai, his previous-world knowledge is barely used, making the tag feel pointless.

I have been a LN reader for a long time. Since 2019. The anime, even if I rated it as a 9, did not meet my expectations as a long time fan. I will point out my reasons later, but why is it that I still rated it high? Because even if its not to my expectations, it was still good nonetheless. I have mixed feelings overall. If you are a reader, watching this is definitely great. I can follow through the plot fine and I don't have problems with the information being dumped to me because I already know it. With the restrictions (they only gave them 13 episodes and that they have to add an action scene each episode) that Tencent gave to the studio, they did incredibly well on focusing main plot, while including as much information as possible. But at the same time, because of the fast pacing, incredible amount of information and the fact that this series does not spoon fed information (you as the watcher need to figure things out, and will only explain the whole thing afterwards) made this a hard anime to recommend. As a lot of anime only can resonate, its hard to follow and the immense amount of info can diminished your interest and enjoyment in watching it. But, if you really, really like a story that deep dives into world building, then I can only assure you that you will enjoy this. This anime or rather donghua is the kind of series where you need to invest. What I meant by invest is putting in effort to learn about the world and understanding the plot. For each episode you need to think hard, pay attention and contemplate of what happened, what might happen and what will happen. There is also the Mysticism Class with Old Neil that you can watch after each episode to learn more about the combat, world, and more. If you still need some guidance, then searching for a youtube video also helps with it. So yeah. I personally love this anime, its story, world and characters. But if you aren't the type to invest on anime, this is not for you. This isn't really the kind where you can just watch it with your brain off. For you to fully enjoy, you need to actually pay attention and (if you need to) research. Or in short this isn’t your typical “watch and forget” show. If you’re not ready to think and invest, you’ll just end up confused. Its better to not even touch it.

Rating: 10/10 (Masterpiece) Animation Quality: “Lord of the Mysteries” boasts some of the finest animation quality I’ve seen in recent memory. The character details are stunning, and the overall quality made me want to watch it in 4K for the best experience, truly bringing the anime to life. Plot Complexity: The overarching plot of “Lord of the Mysteries” is intricate and challenging, even for those who have read the light novel. It blends steampunk, isekai, and fantasy in a unique way, departing from typical isekai tropes. The main character is slightly overpowered, and the complexity can be compared to a scaled-up version of something like Harry Potter, making it both rewarding and demanding. Character Depth: The standout characters, such as Climber Eddy, Leonard Mitchell, Dunn Smith, Justice, and The Hangman, are vital to the story. Their unique traits and the depth they bring add layers that can be challenging for casual viewers to fully grasp. Audience: In my opinion, this anime is best suited for those who have read the light novel or are adept at following complex mystery and fantasy narratives. Casual isekai watchers, be warned: it’s complex. TL;DR: “Lord of the Mysteries” is a masterpiece with stunning animation and a complex, rewarding plot. It’s best enjoyed by those familiar with the light novel or fans of intricate mystery and fantasy genres. Casual isekai watchers, be warned: it’s complex.

Short Review: Positives: It doesn't hold your hand and explain things to you. Negatives: It doesn't hold your hand and explain things to you. Long Review.... Get ready to get lost and confused. And while this can be appreciated to some extent, as I don't like being force feed information, you are sometimes confused to a point where you don't know who people are and what they're doing or why. I feel the show goes way to quickly and introduces a lot of things very quickly. The story follows a man who did some sort of ritual to end up being transported into another world. He's actually transported into another person's body and must assume the identity of this new person. If I were told you this was the show's actual premise, I would be lying. This part is almost ignored. This story is really about becoming a Beyonder (ie. Drink potion and become more powerful.) There's also a grey fog area, but that part doesn't seem to add much to the story beyond providing deus ex machina. Mostly id turns into a detective story with supernatural elements. Oh, and the graphics, they are something else. This is a unique and crisp animation style. It really fits this world and adds to the edginess when blood and gore and introduced into action sequences. This is probably one of the more unique anime I have watched in a while. And I bulled through it without much rest. It held my interest until the last episode. This anime at the time of writing, is only season 1, and I'm unsure it will be finished. So, if you want to continue you will need to go to the source material. Just be prepared for a little confusion along the way. That's why I'm giving it a 7. It has the potential to be great, but is held back by trying to introduce too much too quickly.

So far, this is one of the best anime I’ve watched this year. The story can feel a little confusing at first, but it’s not overwhelming—just something that requires paying attention to the details. Honestly, I actually prefer a story that’s a little confusing, because it gives the plot more weight compared to the kind of cardboard storytelling you see in shows like Solo Leveling. The use of CGI is really impressive. The 3D backgrounds are high quality with great lighting, and the way the 2D characters interact seamlessly with the 3D environment looks fantastic. From a storytelling perspective, this season feels very solid. The pacing and development are tight, and the visuals add a lot to the overall experience. I especially enjoyed how the animation captures large-scale spells, like the ones from Captain Dunn or Leonard—those scenes really stand out. As for the characters, my favorite so far is Trissy. She’s a really strong side antagonist, and I’m hoping we get to see even more of her on the next season.

I haven’t read the source material and I’m not familiar with Chinese culture Nevertheless, I enjoyed it very much. It’s true what people are saying - the story is quite fast paced but as I prefer that to slow world building like we had in Frieren for example, it still didn’t take the pleasure of watching it. The show has many aspects, many different plots not necessarily connected to each other at the beginning but again, I still don’t understand why it would be a disadvantage. In SNK you also didn’t know everything at the beginning and when the creator revealed his motives, everyone was so impressed I’d say that around 10th episode you start to grasp generally what’s going on and you realize that every detail mattered. It’s fun to see what you omitted in the past may turn out useful in the future Ofc, beautiful music, beautiful animation, overall beautiful visuals Despite the confusion, I still highly recommend. You can still enjoy the story and not understand 100% of it

This has made me want to read the light novel and has caused me to watch dozens of YouTube videos on the expanded lore, diving deeper into the world and its characters. It’s incredible how much detail and thought went into every aspect of the story. The animation was amazing, the story was amazing, everything fit together perfectly by the end, leaving no loose threads and keeping me completely immersed. Every scene felt carefully crafted, making the world feel alive and vibrant. And the ending was one of the best endings I have watched in any anime I have watched, leaving a lasting impression that stayed with me long after it finished. It managed to be both satisfying and thought-provoking, hitting all the right emotional notes.

Lord of the Mysteries is a good show and I recommend it, however, there are some "big" flaws that almost made me drop it, and I'll try to describe them below. The good : - The visuals are good looking, the animation is well done ( most of the time ) and you'll see some shots you don't see that often in animation. The art direction is also rather original and feels refreshing, it's common for chinese anime to have a different style and this one follows the rule. - The OST is also done nicely. There is a lot of music in this anime, not songs but rather music themes that enhance the scenes, it's another point that makes LOTM stand out. - The plot, the world building, and the lore are all ambitious and should keep you interested, especially during the last episodes... The bad : - But the story's complexity is also a con : there's a lot of info dump, and I mean a LOT. To be honest, it's hard to follow and remember everything, there's a problem of pace in this show where the beginning is rushed, the middle feels a bit slow, and the last episodes are actually done right. - Another issue that'll make it harder to understand what is going on are the subtitles and the english dub : the english subtitles felt odd so I tried to watch the english dub and it's not a good one : it feels dull, some lines are hard to hear and the tone lacks something, every voice feels a bit monotonous. It's a shame because such a convoluted story would have required a precise dub and/or subtitles but that's not the case. All in all, LOTM feels like a unique show and you should give it a chance, but be aware of some real issues : the pace isn't good with a rushed beginning ( ep 1-3 ) into a slow middle ( ep 4-7/8), and if you don't speak chinese, the english dub doesn't do the story justice. But it's not unbearable, the story material is intriguing enough and this show might become a huge hit in the following years if they improve on certain points.

People call Lotm as the greatest piece of fiction ever. After watching the anime I was really impressed but I felt like the direction of the show was off. So I read the novel and I was genuinely shocked to see how brutally they had cut so many scenes from the novel just so that they can finish the first book in one season. Now that I think of it, it's really absurd that they adjusted the entire book 1 in just 13 episodes. This is why the pacing of the show feels too fast. I was really disappointed with the anime after reading the book and finding out that lotm was never supposed to be so fast moving. The lotm world is enormous and the power system is so detailed it feels surreal to think that a person can think to such an extent. Honestly speaking the anime should have been of 24 episodes, but even then I belive it won't be enough to complete the book one as it is. They skipped so many things from the book. I know a lot of the things weren't important to the story objectively but however it is those small details and pieces of information that makes lotm world so complex and overwhelming. Lotm is known for its crazy detailing and complex world building which is due to the slow development of the story as it helps to showcase the lotm world more vividly. The anime is really great for non readers but those who have read the novel sure has complains with the adaptation. I wish they don't treat the other parts as this one and make proper amends otherwise another masterpiece work would be led to a waste. It has got really great animation and Cgi but however the direction of the show is underwhelming making it confusing for the non readers and thus not leaving a remarkable feeling as the book did. That's the reason I have given it an 9/10 . Personally I have a biase for lotm as I feel lotm has the best and the most complex power system I have ever seen and it has the best world building and the most unique main character. Therefore I have given it an nine otherwise giving it an 8 would be the best. It's still a really great anime it's just you need to pay attention to the screen all the time and not be absent minded as missing even a normal conversation can lead to confusion further in the show as it did for me initially. Hence you need to be all locked in to watch this so that you can understand what exactly is going on. However I would recommend to read the book first and then watch the anime.

Lord of Mysteries is a thrilling, enigmatic Victorian occult isekai that nails the titular mystery, action, animation, worldbuilding, and an intriguingly interesting power system. The voices are also great at hitting that Victorian spirit in the dub. The premise is that--while doing a ritual for good luck--a guy accidentally sends himself to a Victorian era world where the occult is real. It has a really interesting power system that the main character engages in as a sort of magic detective. Aside from the cults they need to track down and creatively deal with, one of the big complicating factors is that delving into the enigmatic magicks of the world oftentimes runs the risk of exposing one's mind to eldritch gods and cognitohazards. This show is probably my favorite non-parody isekai, and it masterfully handles both its own gimmicks and the genre as a whole. Despite the main character catching on quickly, this show is not a power fantasy. Beyond the great execution of its premise, LoM (or LotM if you go by the name of the source material) does a great job of handling themes such as duty, belonging, ambition, and loss. If you're in the mood for an isekai or a Victorian fantasy, I highly recommend this one.

I see a couple of the low rating comments say it’s confusing and that’s why you shouldn’t watch it however I think as it is a mystery anime it does an amazing job of telling a cool story where you get a snippet of clues as you go instead of having everything thrown at you in the first episode of how the world works like a child that needs hand holding. It’s like you are a detective and I love this about this anime. It is supposed to be confusing and that makes it beautiful. Visuals are also beautiful they really did a good job with this one. Definitely don’t recommend if you’re looking for something to just play in the background while you’re doing something else. This anime requires your attention. (Haven’t read the source material)

The anime is good, the animation is very detailed, the soundtrack is impeccable, and the story is engaging with an incredible protagonist. The anime focuses a lot on the protagonist's perspective, where we often follow his thoughts, also showing the development of the story. I believe that sometimes the anime doesn't make some things very clear in the story; if you don't pay close attention, you get lost. We had a small plot twist at the end that I wasn't expecting. Another positive thing is the relationship between the character Isaac and the protagonist; his development within the story is well-written.

This is visual spectacle, with incredible animation. How did they do it. Most anime save their 'sakuga' budget for the important/thrilling scenes. Not this anime. It so frequently uses 'sakuga', I felt I wasn't able to enjoy the story as much. I was focusing on the jaw dropping visuals. Its possible I missed out on the story a bit, and hence wasn't enjoying the narrative elements much. As a matter of fact I was disappointed by the story from the first episode by how calmly he accepts he has been Isekai'ed into another's body. Its normal to have a trauma for a few days at least is it not? I mean this is not a kids anime, this anime is aimed at adults who are likely to pick up on this things. I felt the show overwhelmingly focused on visuals over character arcs. At least that's what I thought till episode nine. Episode nine changed it a lot for me. I was all of a sudden invested in the story. I was all of a sudden invested in the characters. All of a sudden I felt I was watching a 10/10 show. To top it all I think we had a spectacular Finale. I recommended it to all who wish to watch an adult anime/donghua. Also this gives you a glimpse at Chinese anime, and how good they are.
