I will begin with a non-spoiler section and then go into spoilers. --NON-SPOILERS-- If you want a show where you can go and cry for 4 hours, then I got the perfect show for you! This show will seem wholesome at first but man is it sad. The way Kotaro deals with his problems, the way his neighbors rally around him, it just makes you wanna cry. This show also does a great job not to reveal everything at once. It gives you little hints and breadcrumbs throughout the show, and by the end you can finally piece together the puzzle, and it makes the pain so much more. It's a slice-of-life, so it is not like the art style matters all too much, so this show is pretty average on that mark. The songs, opening and ending are solid and fit the show well, but they aren't' anything that stands above the rest. The characters are all amazing in this show, which because of it being a slice-of-life makes the show so much more enjoyable. This is a great short show to watch, and I cannot recommend it enough to people. -SPOILERS- This show just makes you cry over and over again, from the fact that his father is such a psycho that Kotaro is forced to live alone, and the fact that Kotaro has no friends or people he can rely on that he tries to get through life on his own. Let's just get into the breakdown. Story (10/10) When a kid has to watch a terrible TV show to get life guidance, you know it's gonna be a sad show. I also love how each neighbor plays a significant role in Kotaros' life. The fact that Karino goes from being a loser and a low-life to being the father figure for him is amazing. I also like how in the story, they don't just make it so that Kotaro is the only one benefiting from his neighbors, but all of the neighbors learn significant life lessons and better themselves from their interactions with Kotaro. Like I said before, Karino becoming a father-figure, Mizuki learning how to take care of herself and get away from an abusive boyfriend, Tamaru learning how he should treat his child, and so many more. Also the slight hints at his rough bringing up throughout are so well done. For instance, Kotaro hiding from the camera, the weekly allowance, him feeling like he needs to be clean all the time, etc. The story is told so elegantly profoundly, that at times it is just so hard to believe that he is a 4-year-old. Art (7/10) This shows art isn't anything crazy, but it doesn't need to be, it's a slice-of-life, and there is a lot more effort put towards the voice acting and story development which is good. For small studios, you can get into a lot of trouble if you try to do too much, but LIDENFILMS understood that this show was meant to have a great story and characters, so they made sure to prioritize that. The art is good enough though to not take anything away from the story, so well done LIDENFILMS for successfully doing average art! Sound (7/10) Like the art, the sound is nothing stellar, but it didn't need to be. They did well to make music that fit with what was happening in the show very well, and they have their opening and ending fit the theme of the show well. I can't really knock on the sound, but I also can't praise it to extensive measures. It's good, simple as that. Characters (10/10) I kinda hit on the characters in the story section, but that's just because they are integral to how well the story is told. Each neighbor develops so well throughout, and the bond that they all share with Kotaro is incredible. I can't hate any of the characters (other than the father of course), they are just so genuine and wholesome. I love them all so much. Enjoyment (10/10) This show just threw me on a roller coaster. In one frame I'm laughing, in the same scene but a few frames down the road, I am crying. The show just continues to keep you engaged and you love every moment. Each episode is longer than a typical anime episode but it doesn't feel longer by any means. I've had 20 minute episodes from other shows feel longer than the longest episodes in this show. The pacing, the emotions, and adventure are all just massive wins! Also, this was a small detail I noticed when watching some of the episodes back, but every time Kotaro is genuinely happy in a moment, his pupils in his eyes turn from black to white. Go back through some of the episodes and see if you can catch that as well. It just adds to the emotion. -CONCLUDING THOUGHTS- (9/10) Just like Your Lie in April or Komi Can't Communicate, i find myself genuinely feeling sorry for these characters when they are in their lowest moments, and celebrating along side them when they are in their high points. This will be a show that I definitely go back and watch again, it was just such a good ride.

Even if you don't enjoy anime, I am more than certain you will enjoy and appreciate this anime. This is one of the best drama comedy I've watched ever. It never tries to be something else and it excels at what it's trying to be. This anime follows a life of a boy who's moving to an apartment. The story itself will revolves around the boy and his interaction with people around him, mostly his neighbors who lives in the same apartment (as it's a small one). The cast supports each other SOOO well, like really, I legit sit through all of the episode without getting bored even if there's some element of slice-of-life to it. The comedy in this can be cliche sometimes but most of the time they're not jokes that tries to get you bust out a laugh, they're more of a subtle giggle if you know what I mean as the comedy in this is pretty much a cherry on top Now, this series, at least for me, is focused on the drama element. It's sad. Like really sad when it tries to. Now the reason is a spoiler so skip to the last paragraph if you want, it's only minor spoiler tho so. *SPOILERS* Whenever Kotaro talks about how his parents never abandoned him, I felt that. It's almost surprising how seemingly wise he is as a child (sometimes even as an adult lol), he never hesitate to protect his obviously terrible parents. You can tell after like 4 episode that he obviously know that his parents abandoned him but despised all that he took the blame on himself everytime. I'm telling you, this is DEPRESSING as hell. There's also Karino the neighbor which is a character with clear development throuhout the serie, starting off as a miserable mangaka who lacks stylish art. When Kotaro arrives, he obviously find it annoying since basically he's the person Kotaro interact with at first but you can tell at the later episodes, he basically become Kotaro's dad. Another great thing about this serie is how big of an effect Kotaro has to people around him. Like seriously man, this kid do be giving life advices left and right. There are times where some characters just come and gone but it leave a lasting effect on the viewers. One of my favorite is Tasuku. The arc he's in is about how he's going broke then trying to leech off of Kotaro which is as you can tell, a f*cking horrible thing. It later reveals that he's the one that teaches Kotaro about trusting people and yet he can't do the same. When Kotaro reveals he knew it all along and he's willingly falling for it, it really did send a simple and powerful message that when you trust someone so much, you're willingly to play the fool to make them happy. This really shows that the right approach at simple thing can leave an impactful lesson. So yes, you can bring your kids to watch it for lessons if you're into that. Anyway it's getting long so.... *SPOILERS END* This serie overall is a serie you can watch in the living room with your family and still have fun with it. It's one of those few where the plot is surprisingly simple and to the point while being able to convey an impactful message with it. The casts compliment each other well and yes, it might make you cry so prepare a box of tissues if you're one of those people. This is going on my must-watch list and overall 10/10 since I relate to this very well.

THIS ANIME IS PERFECT, the story alone brought tears and and laughter every episode. It's rare when an anime can have sadness and comedy in one. The main character Kotaro is an amazing character with such a tragic story and constantly just made me feel so much. His neighbors aka the other main characters are outstanding. This is a binge anime for sure, once started i never wanted to stop watching, its so rare when an anime can perfectly blend everything together, i cant think of much anime's that are able to have me laughing then crying every episode. This anime for sure was sleeper anime but it's a perfect series and everyone who watches it seems to agree. I don't want to say much as i don't want to spoil but PLEASE watch this anime and enjoy it to the fullest cause this is an anime you don't want to miss out on.

utterly depressing, left me crying in a pit of despair 9/10 👍 (ok jokes aside, that was a lovely anime. Little Kotaro is very cute and it's pretty bizarre seeing a 4-year-old living on his own. Maybe the premise is a bit much, I find it highly unlikely that child services would let such a small kid live alone out of foster care... Yet, all the characters are very realistic, each with very unique struggles and personalities. It was a bit heavy for me, I don't do well with stories about abuse much more if it's at the expense of a child and I'm very sensitive. But 'Kotaro Lives Alone' handled these issues with dignity, it wasn't grotesque nor did it make light of the situation. it was realistic in its pain, which I appreciated a lot. Definitely not for the faint of heart, I teared up in almost every episode but, in my opinion, totally worth it! Not sure if I could ever handle a re-watch, but I will surely remember this for a while!)

This show is a good watch that I would recommend to almost anyone there's lots of funny moments, sad impactful moments, and moments of lessons being learned. This show also has some great characters with unique quirks that play off of each other flawlessly. Overall just a super sweet wholesome show, the art in it is not exactly what I personally find favorable, it's heavily stylized, and not really in a good way for me, but art is subjective and It does have a charming side to it as well. Some things that happened in the show were not perfect, but overall a good watch for sure.

If you like comforting slice of life animes you’ll like this one! it’s pretty interesting too, watching him learn about different aspects of life. The art style is pretty good and the characters all have some sort of development based on their relationship with Kotaro. It is a little bit sad at times but i’d say it’s more bittersweet than anything. Kotaro is a pretty smart cookie for a 4 year old. Kids will love this show too my 1 year old niece was glued to the laptop whenever I put it on! Kotaros strength is probably his unusual intelligence for being so young and karinos is definitely how unexpectedly caring he can be at times. I think the art style is very cute and fitting for a story like this one! If you’re considering watching you should definitely do so!

This anime is a good starting point for long time anime watchers who have stopped watching anime for a while. Kotaro lives alone has a relax and cozy pacing in terms of storyline, character development not much but there is some growth in the main characters. For me, the main themes of this show are found family and neglected children. If anything I wished the anime didn't end and has a second season, it has the same vibes as Gakuen Babysitters but not as much cutesy. I recommend watching this for a good cry. The storyline is quite unique as it's not everyday you follow the life of a 4 year old who is really quite self aware, it is a tad bit unrealistic for a 4 year old to be this smart. However the situations that were presented in the show was quite realistic and some viewers might even relate to some of the situations. This story has explores a little bit of darkness but doesn't go too much in depth but the signs are there.

I’ve decided to write my first review on this show because I think just putting a 10/10 doesn’t do it justice. This show resonated with me so deeply and I am sitting here crying and thinking about it. Here are some reasons for why you should watch this show: - I am someone who works with younger kids for my job. This was such a refreshing view on the intelligence of children, because they are so much smarter than people give them credit for. - The small and subtle ways that outsiders can detect abuse in the home is important and I think this show touches on a few of those signs really well. - The main supporting cast is so well thought out and I really enjoyed how different they all are - I am such a sucker for the “found family” trope - It tackles serious subjects regarding people of all backgrounds, but still has light moments Those are just a few! I believe that a lot of people see a show that portrays hard topics and think that it should be very heavy-handed in terms of making those points. I disagree. I think taking these topics and putting them through the eyes of an intelligent child and the people around him is such a great way to handle these issues. Not everyone has this firm and solid grasp on moral issues, not everyone knows what to do in certain situations, and it’s so hard to have a “right” answer. We are all trying our best, and that’s what I think is so beautiful about this show. My biggest complaint is that I want more :)))

I initially went into this anime expecting something lighthearted—a fun, silly slice-of-life series that I could casually enjoy. And to be fair, it absolutely delivers on that front with plenty of charming and humorous moments. The animation style, quirky characters, and playful tone give the impression that you're in for a feel-good experience. But what completely caught me off guard was the emotional depth woven into the story. Beneath the surface of laughter and whimsical day-to-day interactions lies a profoundly touching narrative that carries real emotional weight. It’s not just heartwarming—it’s heartbreaking in ways I wasn’t prepared for. There were moments that genuinely left me in tears, and I found myself thinking about certain scenes long after the credits rolled. Kotaro, the main character, is one of the most endearing and memorable children I've seen in anime. From the very first episode, it’s painfully clear that he’s carrying emotional scars far too heavy for someone his age. As the series unfolds, you begin to understand more about his past, and it only deepens your empathy for him. Like his neighbors in the show, you can’t help but grow attached to him and want to protect him. It’s honestly baffling to me that more people aren’t talking about this anime. It’s the kind of story that sneaks up on you, stays with you, and makes you want to hug someone afterward. Final rating: 10/10 — would absolutely cry my eyes out again (and probably will). Highly recommended.

First: childcare along with slice of life genres are basically far enough to make one happy. Story: pretty emotional story plot along with all the cutest moments that one could have with children Characters: first preference is karino, bcz he's pretty honest at his career with manga. Next sure is kotaro the way he address everyone with sir and lady regardless of same or above age people. Respect, fun, humanity, kindness, love everything is explicitly beautiful in this story . Episodes: I just finished this anime in one week but worthy of all the 10. None of the episode is lagging or boring..everything is very much into it. At the last episode I never wanted to end as like every other favorite anime yet this one has a twist bcz kotaro had taught me one thing today, 'no matter how much ever life is bad, if you gotta live it completely alone you'll have to make it up in such a way that you're never to end but to explore'. Hence we should live amongst coexistence as kids do and in fact learn from kids! Therefore 10/10 !! Love kotaro♡

I came expecting all comedy, but turned out to be really different than what I was expecting It really is a beautiful anime, it's an emotional, funny, adventurous journey of kotaro's daily life kotaro might surprise you of how smart he is, sometimes you forget he's just a kid I also know that some people may relate to kotaro which made this anime even better, to open people's eyes of things that can happen in real life, yes some people don't have a clue of these things and it's good that it has a nice ending I also like how the story doesn't only focus on kotaro, yes the maun character is kotaro but they also showed that other people went through similar situations, it showed how each of these people made their choice and built their lives upon that choice I also like hoe kotaro influenced the lives of people around him to the better really recommend it, it reminded me of usagi drop, some scenes were quite sad but the ending was perfect

This was one of my first Slice of Life anime's I have watched and it peaked my interest from the preview that Netflix shows. This was one of the most enjoyable shows I have seen. Story: 9 The story is a very heart-warming and enjoyable story with lots of loveable characters that have great storytelling behind each of them even with only 10 episodes in the season. The episodes are sort of split in two almost like two 15 minute shorts put into a 30 minute episode. The adventures and escapades of Kotaro and his neighbor Karino shows a side of society that most people forget about. The hardships kids and young teens go through when put into foster care and how they deal with not having parents. Doing things like going to school and seeing kids with parents while they themselves do not and how much a simple friend can help in that experience.

Kotaro lives Alone is a solid blend of comedy, drama and emotional moments that will make you laugh at one moment and cry at the other. The anime follows the rhythm of daily life, its humor deadpan. Each episode is made up of short, sometimes disconnected vignettes that feel like paging through a scrapbook. Equal parts heartwarming, laugh-out-loud funny, a rather nuanced exploration of child abuse, and one of the biggest surprises of the season. This Netflix anime series is not a strong must-watch, but if you are looking for a heartfelt story, then Kotaro will undoubtedly provide you with plenty of heartwarming chapters. My Rating: 7/10

OPENING & CLOSING THEMES + SONGS I don’t think I ever have any opening or closing themes that I hated especially in my slice of life anime, and it’s no different for this series. The intro was so cute and colorful which surprisingly reminds me of those childhood shows that I like. Just watching the opening already makes me feel relaxed, which really is the reason why I love slice of life genre, *wink. The song suits the opening as well, which sounds really cute <3 The ending on the other hand is pretty simple but the illustration changes in every episode and looks really good. It was not my usual upbeat music, but I really like the ending song as well. STORY This is a story of a four year old boy named Kotaro who lives alone in an apartment complex. There he met some adults who soon became his friends and guardians. A four year old kid living alone?! Honestly, when I started this anime I didn’t think it would work out considering the technicalities. But it’s hard to dwell on that one when Kotaro is very cute and acts so mature unlike his age. I really love how he influences the people around him, just watching this anime just proves why I love this genre. It was just so heartwarming how the people around him can’t help but love this kid. His life definitely is hard, he’s still a kid but he can’t live like one since he needs to be an adult to live. His backstory was revealed little by little as you watch this series, and I’m not sure what to think. Should I feel sad for him? Or be proud? Maybe I should feel both? I really love how he endured and always thinks of other people before himself. Seriously, this kid is more mature than I do, lol. Aside from heartwarming scenes, this series has a lot of cute scenes as well, especially Kotaro's scenes with the cats. Just looking at that scene, you can really see that he is still a child, so precious <3 That ending was really sweet and you can’t help but imagine what his life would be years from now. And really hope that everything would work out well for him, *smile. CHARACTERS You’ll definitely finish this series feeling so proud of Kotaro. Considering he doesn’t have parents to guide him growing up, you can see that despite all of that, he was able to grow up so well. I think he’s more mature compared to all adults in this anime, lol. The side characters are something you also need to look forward to. I just love seeing how they care for Kotaro and make sure to help him eventhough he always insists on not asking for help from anyone. I don’t think there’s someone in this anime that isn’t likable, even the gangster looking character lol. ART & ANIMATION I think the animation was pretty good and was able to deliver the message this anime wants to portray to its viewers. The only thing I didn’t like in this anime was the eyes hahaha, I just think that Kotaro’s eyes look like a frog, so sorry hahaha. Other than that, I think everything looks good, *wink. VOICE ACTORS The EN dubbed sounds fine sometimes(?), but I highly recommend watching it in JP dubbed to fully appreciate the anime and be immersed with the emotion especially on emotional parts. *** Kotaro lives alone is definitely a nice break to your usual high energy shounen anime. I hope you give this one a try.Have fun watching!

Don’t let the goofy animation trick you. This is an unexpectedly sad anime. You know that moments where kids just naively say stuff that actually sounded insightful and honest. The whole time I was in denial at how emotional I got from watching Kotaro talking to his friends and neighbors. One moment I was like “what a kid thing to do” and the next moment I was shocked and baffled at what Kotaro said. Behind the silly animation was a heartbreaking story about kids being neglected or traumatized due to parental dispute or mistreatment. The concept is unexpectedly brilliant as it both lighten up the tone while ingraining the message into audience’s mind. The thing Kotaro said will definitely break your heart because no kids should have any reasons to say these stuff. As sad as it is, the story was also wholesome. Kotaro’s innocence and brutal honesty changed the people around him. Each adult characters that interacted with Kotaro had unique relationship with him as well as going through different journeys to reflect on themselves. Probably my issue is the age of the kid. He’s only 4 years old, and I don’t think a 4 year old would be able to be this mature. I think if the kid is like 7 or 8 it would make more sense. Overall, what a wholesome and heartbreaking story. 8.5/10

Kotaro Lives Alone is a heartful and wholesome story, and I enjoyed every little bit of its enchanting tale. The premise surrounds the MC, Kotaro, who is a self-reliant young boy determined to succeed and become strong without the help of others. However, soon realizes that he doesn't have to do things by himself, and that he - in fact - is also not alone. Not anymore, at least. The plot unfolds around Kotaro's neighbor's slowly peeling apart the background that Kotaro tries so desperately to keep covered. Which gives us the chance to learn about these kind, warmhearted characters. I loved discovering more about each of them, and more so, loved watching as Kotaro's perspective of them changes beyond neighbors. My favorite trope in anime is "found family," and this depicts that wonderfully. The show really is something special, which can undoubtedly be attributed to Kotaro himself. He is a perfect balance of both being mature for his age while also still a kid at heart. And with every thing he says, he pulls ever so slightly more on your heartstrings unit you want to cuddle him up forever. All that to say that this is definitely worth watching!

The trailer was a lie. I went into this expecting it to be cute and lighthearted, it was supposed to be cute and lighthearted. By the end of the anime I was ugly crying so hard, I singlehandedly decimated a whole box of tissues. What the heck man, I went into this thinking it would be light and cute Instead I just got puffy eyes and an empty tissue box. Don't get me wrong, the story was somewhat simple and straightforward, but it was the way that the story was conveyed that had me ugly crying. The art was nice, the voices were nice, and while overall it'd probably have ended up being more so-so than anything great, I'm only giving it a step up in rating because of how hard I cried over it. Something about this anime was especially tearjerking, so be warned and possibly have a tissue box ready for the tears.

I honestly went in a bit skeptical, but this was a really good show. I mean, really. It manages to balance the comedy and tragedy of a child living alone in such a impactful way. It has an impressive way of punching you in the gut with simple scenes, and keeps Kotaro's backstory mysterious enough that it's intriguing, but gives you enough information to keep you putting pieces together, eager to hear more. It has a great theme, well-done characters, and was overall one of the most impressive anime I've seen lately. I don't want to spoil anything, but I think I'm okay saying that the focus is largely on abused children, and how that affects their behavior and reasoning. The show has funny moments, but underneath it all lies a darker story, about why a 4-year old is living all alone. If you're looking to both laugh and cry, I'd definitely recommend Kotaro lives alone. It's one of the best of this year, in my opinion.

This anime is surprisingly good. Yes, the artwork is a little off-putting, but when you are able to look past it, there's a pretty enjoyable and funny slice of life anime with a darker hidden backstory that gets drip-fed to you as the show moves on. As a parent, this show speaks to me on another level with it's hidden themes, and how Kotaro acts with other members of the apartment complex that he resides in. The story writers really captured the actions and thoughts of a 4 year old (other than how clear he talks, but the show would be even harder to watch if he actually talked like a kid his age). At the time of this review, I have a 5 year old daughter and she often reflects actions that are displayed by Kotaro! With that said, Kotaro Lives Alone really makes you feel terrible for certain things that you do as a parent, as well. I won't get into the reasoning, but man, Kotaro goes through a lot, yet doesn't quite understand what's going on. It really makes you feel for him and want to be there for the guy, a sentiment that almost literally everyone he comes into contact with in the show shares as well. There are multiple heartwarming moments, funny times, and instances where you legitimately want to cry. Ultimately, the show leaves you with a lot of unanswered questions, begging for much more. Hopefully there will be a second season that will help clear up those questions, because this show definitely deserves it. I highly recommend you give this show a shot!

This anime spoke to me on several different levels. From a more analytical perspective, the story is very well written and is developed in an intriguing way, which compelled me to watch the show even though I prefer to consume media in the form of manga more often now. As a slice of life anime it offers a unique insight into day-to-day living that a more character arc and action driven show could not. It allows exploration of the character dynamics while providing a lighter canvas that's undercut by terribly dark themes. Every episode has a little revelation as to what happened to Kotaro. The premise is clear, but we see his trauma and feelings expressed in little realistic ways over time, which helps flesh him out and make him more sympathetic. We see the lives of people portrayed for a lot of these characters, not just anime characters meant to fill a certain trope or niche, though it does use visual shorthand and tropes to introduce us to each character. These characters all have their motivations, backstories, and personalities. As such, Kotaro Lives Alone is a good blend of comedy, tragedy, and heartache. From a personal perspective, I couldn't help but see myself in Kotaro's shoes. I feel a lot of shows and manga tend to dramatize poverty and neglect so that it can be used as a story device. The effects of neglect are used as a baseline, but are ignored once it becomes inconvenient to the plot. Characters are forced to heal for plot progression or for romantic relationships. I like that Kotaro Lives Alone depicts trauma not just in child characters but in adult characters in a way that shows how long of an impact it has on you. Yes. I am a functional adult now. I'm not the child that would sit alone in a house filled with trash, broken dishes, and arguing parents trying to disappear into the background. I can live on my own now. But just because I try to be strong, it doesn't mean the scars have left me. It's shaped my personality, my bad habits, and sometimes it overcomes me. Maybe it's not a rubber glove that makes me do unreasonable things, but showing characters reacting to triggers in similar ways as well as having a support system there to help them makes me feel... less lonely. The adult characters do a good job of showing the longer lasting impact of childhood abuse as well as how they can strive to stop the cycle of abuse by being there for others. It's what I want to do, it's what I wish was done for me, and I think it's not done nearly enough in anime. Not all jobs are fancy. We really like to watch shows where people are doing well with extraordinary lives. So many of us are ordinary. But just because we do ordinary things, it doesn't make our stories less interesting, and it doesn't mean they shouldn't be told. This is one of the strengths of slice-of-life anime. It can be heartwarming and relatable. We can use familiar media to show a deeper meaning to things. Sometimes allegories and grand stories about war in another planet do this well. But sometimes we need to see it in a familiar setting. I think this is what makes Kotaro Lives Alone special to me. It is one of those slice-of-life that tries to use daily life and small stories to show us something more important, which is why it's so easy for people like me to connect to it. Kotaro's characterization in the show is excellent. We see little personality quirks and ideals that are attributed to his background. He is easily understandable and while not every child gets to live alone like he does, his mannerisms are something that are far too common for far too sad reasons. It is a terrible thing that so many people can look at Kotaro and realize that they aren't so different from him. Yet it's such a beautiful thing as well, to see that there is hope, and that we are not alone. How is it that an anime with such a simple premise and simple art style tells such a profound story? How is it that there is so much depth to short episodes disguising the real message they're telling? This is an anime you pick up because it looks charming, but becomes an anime you can't stop watching because it's too touching. Anyone who is struggling with childhood trauma can appreciate the intentions of this show, though it may strike many painful chords. I believe this is a simple telling of a sadly universal story that capitalizes on the benefits of the genre. This show may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I think it has a charming message, and is worth a watch at the very least for anyone who likes slice-of-life anime.
