The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes

A schoolboy meets a schoolgirl on the railway station and gives her umbrella. You're right if you immidiately thought about love story, because that's how romances begin in recent anime. The "The Tunnel to Summer" is full of such cliches and you shold be ready for them while watching this anime like you are ready to the fact that there are little to no differences between fast foods' menus. The boy is your stereotypical male lead from modern anime: average in all aspects possible, anxious, whiny, hyper-reflective, impulsive, obsessive, self-absorbed, lacking common sense, intellectually and emotionally dull. In other words he is typical psychasthenic. The girl also matches current tropes - she is determined, rational and brave. Overall that's your another modern cliche with gender roles inversion. How refreshing indeed. The boy and the girl are in some way alike because both of them have problems with their parents and struggling to find a way out of their current situation. To cope the boy clinged to the past and the girl clinges to her dream of becoming mangaka. That's where fantastic element comes into action. The boy finds a mysterious tunnel where you can find something that you lost in the past. The tunnel has a different time flow with hours there being years in the real world. So the boy and the girl begin to explore the tunnel in order to gain their wishes from it. The boy wants to ressurect his deceased sister while the girl wants to find in the tunnel a talent for manga that she thinks she is lacking (no logic here, since you can't find there something you didn't have - yet another clumsy sacrifice for the plot progression). In the process they fell in love with each other but since it's an anime they are unwilling to admit and reveal their feelings untill it's almost too late. The moral here is that you should not cling to the past but look into future. End of story. There are many plotholes and dumb acts in the process but overall that's it because this boring and tedious anime indeed ends abruptly. The name "The Tunnel to Summer" is most probably a refference to Heinlein's "The Door into Summer" where the protagonist is trying to find a way out of the disastrous situation he stucked in. Heinlein's novel is also dealing with time shifts and a love which survives through years. But where in "The Door into Summer" the main character is actively searching for his "door into summer", putting all his efforts and ingenuity into this, the protagonist of "The Tunnel to Summer" is passively wasting his life and endagering his love by obsessively clinging to his past. Giving the tendency of anime protagonists to became more and more dumb and mentally disordered it's a good thing he realizes his problem after all. But really, he is not the best example to follow for the young adults. Heinlein's protagonist is much better suited for this role. Not to mention that "The Door into Summer" is a much more enthralling and imaginative read. But "The Tunnel to Summer" has its pros. First of all it has great visual both in terms of drawing style and the animation. The main characters are aesthetically appealing and likable despite their density. Also this anime has positive moral message and happy ending, which is a great feat in the times of hypersentimental and decadent storytelling.

Like some other comments have mentioned before. The adaptation does not do justice to the light novel. I remember reading the novel around 2 years ago and I still think about the book regularly. Seeing that there was an adaptation made me very excited to watch it but while watching it didn't really made me feel something. there were some nice scenes but a lot of details that would've made the characters more understandable and the setting more lively dissapeared. Personally I found it a bit sad that the ending of the film was cut short compared to the novel that explained just a bit more of life after the tunnel.

Grow Old and Share Together: The heart of the film lies in Kaoru's desire to reunite with his deceased sister, Karen. He stumbles upon a mysterious time-bending tunnel rumored to grant wishes in exchange for years of one's life. The film cleverly flips the script on the typical "wish for a better past" trope. Instead, Kaoru's wish is to simply spend more time with Karen, to grow old with her, and experience life together. This unconventional desire adds depth and emotional weight to his journey. Under the Surface of Time Travel: While the time-travel element plays a pivotal role, the film wisely avoids focusing on the mechanics of the tunnel or creating complex paradoxes. Instead, it uses time travel as a tool to explore the emotional consequences of Kaoru's choices. He witnesses Karen's life unfold, experiences her joys and sorrows, and ultimately learns to accept her absence. More Than Just a "What-If": The film transcends a simple "what-if" scenario. It's not just about changing the past, but about learning from it and appreciating the present. Kaoru's journey through time forces him to confront his guilt and regret, ultimately leading to acceptance and closure. The film subtly teaches viewers to cherish the present moments with loved ones and stop wasting time on regrets. Visually Stunning and Emotionally Resonant: The animation in Natsu e no Tunnel is breathtaking, with vibrant colors, detailed backgrounds, and expressive character designs. The film masterfully captures the beauty of the rural Japanese setting and the emotional turmoil of the characters. The soundtrack further elevates the experience, with melancholic melodies that perfectly complement the story's themes. While people may complain about the overall pacing of this adaptation I think this movie is incredibly well done for the amount of time it had. I think it might have been better in anime format with a season or two but I feel like we would have lost a LOT of the quality that made this movie so beautiful. The colors were vibrant, the emotion in both dub and sub were raw, and the struggle is real. so overall while you might not like the pacing of it, the story still stands on its own two feet with a supernatural, psychological & romantic twist that you just don't see in a lot of films! I have ALWAYS loved when they take a supernatural element and mix in a bit of romance. So this series was right up my alley. If you are looking for something that has similar supernatural vibes to SummerTime Rendering with Romantic vibes from SNAFU then I recommend you watch The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes!

This is a pretty cool take on the classic Orpheus story. It combines it well with the teenage run away/spirited away stories. I appreciate that Studio CLAP's works are short and well told. Without spoilers, I think the art direction, music, and scene selection are done very well. The story telling motifs aren't ground breaking, but a very good implementation on how a story should be told. I think it does a great job at tackling the problems that matter, and leaves the unimportant points open to interpretation. Personally, Touno and Hanashiro feel super relatable. They both really boil down how I felt as a teenager. Overall, I'm glad I spent some time on this one.

Watching it felt like I was watching Makoto Shinkai movie but also not a Makoto Shinkai Movie Superb Animation, Sequences, Voice Acting, Plot, Concept, Hidden HInts in Backgrounds, etc. Compared to Makoto Shinkai's Your Name, it lacked punch/impact only. But I would say that there's an old Makoto Shinkai's movie kinda also based on similar concept it was definitely 98% related to that in pace and impact factor ( That wasn't a popular movie, was short but interesting I'll mention that name below as well) Makoto Old similar movie : The Voice of a Distant Star PS: I was rating it 8 at first, then rating went from 9 to 10 and then somewhere between 8.5-9. Since I rate least personally hence rated 8/10. Where anything I rate atleast 8 means they are recommendable. PS2: Just further adding, my rating 7/10 means " I won't recommend it but watching it was good experience"

I watched The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes with some friends, and honestly the group dynamic made me like it even more. One of them really didn’t enjoy it, which somehow just pushed me further in the opposite direction. Sometimes hearing nonstop complaints during a movie just confirms that you’re on the right side of things. The movie itself was very fire. It has a quiet, emotional tone that worked really well for me, and the pacing felt intentional rather than slow. It took its time with the story and trusted the viewer to sit with the emotions instead of spelling everything out, which I appreciated. Watching it with friends added another layer to the experience, especially given how differently everyone reacted. The same person who couldn’t get into the movie also happens to be the guy who finished dead last in our fantasy football league this year, so take that however you want. Not everyone has the best judgment under pressure. Overall, The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes was a great experience and easily a highlight. Sometimes liking a movie is about the story itself and sometimes it’s about knowing you trusted your instincts.

In the end credits, a song is played with the credits which has this line “We’re content where we are”. I mean we all have been there or had the thoughts or have gone through it, when you were like I would do anything to get something it back I would do anything to achieve something right? Or the things we have right now we feel we deserve more or the things we maybe going through are not what we deserve. And so we act in certain ways in that situation or we take certain decisions which leads us to loose the things we already had and when we loose them we think back and we say this to ourselves that the things weren’t really bad things were fine as it is we I was greedy for more. We always regret it. So things happen and they happen for a good reason and in all that if we try hard to change things we may loose something precious to use it can be anything people, time, feelings, a thing. I don’t know if I made any sense there but. Yeah I know I used a lot of or and’s but this is something I really felt after watching the movie. The movie itself has a simple premise and overall says one thing “Live in the moment” “Make most of your present” p.s anime only

I’m actually a bit disappointed with this one. I usually really like these types of movies and romance dramas, but this one did not click with me. Lets split it up into smaller aspects and give them a spoiler free rating: Animation: 8/10 The Animation was probably one of the best things about this movie. While the characters could‘ve been designed a bit better maybe, the backgrounds and lightning is looks very stunning and it‘s an overall very beautifully animated movie. Voice Acting: 7.5/10 The Voice Acting wasn‘t anything outstanding, the sub Voices were quite nice, but I feel like te dub voices sound a bit too old for the 2 main protagonists. Characters: 6/10 Both maik characters aren‘t anything special, they have their distinct motives that drive them and lead to them fitting together, but the rest of the characters is completely irrelevant. Music/Sound: 7/10 Wasn‘t any type of masterclass, but nothing shitty too. I overall thought that the music was good, nothing special but simply good. It elevated the climatic moments. Story: 5/10 This sadly is the weakest part of the movie. The plot has a lot of holes, skipped aspects, rushed actions and half-done conclusions. The movie felt like it would‘ve needed another 10 minutes for the ending to flesh out better, because the way it was done just seemed to quick and rushed for it to be an understandable one. I don‘t know if the Light Novel is better regarding that aspect. And I also have a few things that set me off that made absolutely no sense, which ruined the experience for me a bit. Conclusion: 6/10 It is not a bad movie, but also not really a good one. It looks beautiful and is not a waste of time, don‘t get me wrong, but don‘t expect a great plot. I might have to give it another watch, and if that changes my opinion I‘ll edit my review. Thank you for reading my review.

title: I want to return your umbrella (or not) The world is cruel, the reality is harsh, and nothing goes as you want them to. Failure gives birth to negativity and prevents one's confidence to boost. But fret not. There's always a tunnel to grant your wish. Rather than scratching it, one needs to enter into the tunnel. Due to some circumstances, our main protagonist Kaoru discovers that tunnel. But there's a saying, "Humankind can not gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain something of equal value must be lost [Alphonse Elric]." So sharing the same interest, Kaoru and Anzu[FMC] started investigating the tunnel. While investigating it, they discover many theories behind the tunnel. Concept: The main interesting part of this anime was the mystery behind the tunnel. The concept of the tunnel gives room for more investigation and research. Character: The character introduction, background details, and development was quite eye catching. Romance: The flow of romance development was very natural. The animation is good. The story pacing is quite natural, with good music.

This is very nice. It has an unusually serious tone for an anime, which is a nice change of pace compared to allthe inane bullshit I have been watching altely. The supernatural mystery of the tunnel is rather captivating. The waifu has an engaging personality. I wish someone would be as smitten with me as she is with the ordinary protagonist. It is a movie so no filler episodes. The ending is a bit too perfect, but at least it made me feel a bit less empty for a short time. I would definitely recommend watching this in bed before going to sleep, perhaps you will have a nice dream, in any case it's not like you have anything better to do!

Subtly beautiful movie that pulls on your heart in a way that's not asking for too much. There's something about the stunning visuals that movies in this genre have, that feels so plain, yet impossible to look away from. The constant subversion of expectation throughout the climax and resolution creates an experience that forces you to stop trying to guess what happens next, and just let it play out. There's a silent allure to a story that can wring your heart out while also keeping you on your toes. And characters with realistic struggles create that kind of tenuous charm that pulls you out of your exhausting reality, and into a world devoid of anything but what's on screen.

This was such a banger of a movie man. I got super sad after realizing the fact if i will ever again see something as good as this. Like I felt I had to a backflip and give it a standing ovation. I may be glazing it bit but definitely a 10/10 in my books. The concept of the tunnel is cool as well and the art style fits it perfectly. Maybe there could have been more characters and maybe a realistic development between the leads but overall I wouldn't mind being hit on the head so I could rewatch this movie for the first time again.

To be honest with you, I love romance anime, I have been seen a lot of them and I still have plenty to watch. At first, I thought this movie wasn't going to be amazing for my taste, but I watched it anyway, I was intrigued to know the story about where the tunnel could go and what they could really recover. The film is a master class, the animations, soundtrack, everything is good! The ending is incredible, I didn't really expect that, I was on the verge of crying, because I would like to feel the same thing with the person I love in several years, this film should correspond to many people in my situation and should move them, you absolutely must see it, it is AMAZING!

Let me be summarise my review with this one line: "A lot of potential was lost, passable performances plagued this movie" In no department, the movie performs exceptionally. All departments work like they do in an average TV series, doing a passable job nothing exceptional that should be the case for movies in my humble opinion. The story & direction of the movie is pretty straightforward. Nobody pulls any punches to present movie in a slight different way. Art & Animations were good but nowhere near the level of 2022 standards (especially for a movie). Sound department did a good job & even the VAs did a passable job for English dub. Surely they could've done better but frankly every department could've done better in the production of the movie. Character development, again, was a passable job but barely. They established every relation but depth of relationships weren't established properly. As a viewer, I was not even able to establish any connection with the characters. Doing the just passable job didn't provide viewers with a great movie experience. I would again repeat this: "Passable Performances plagued this movie".

“No matter how long it takes, I’ll be here, waiting for you to return.” This sentence really describes how the anime wanted to say to their audience. with moderate pace, they can express the emotion between the main characters and the heroine with their own problem. Honestly it got same vibe as your name and Suzume, but this anime use the element of time paradox that rare to be used in this type of genre. With a good story isn't enough to satisfy, this anime show a beautiful scenery especially in the tunnel, good lighting that not just good, it give a warm vibe to us, so we aren't get distracted and can focus to the main story

Good watch. Looking back at it, the cast was very small and the concept was very simple however it was executed fairly well. The visuals and animation were great, as they are in most anime movies. The movie felt a little bit lackluster at times towards the end because I felt the characters weren't reacting as emotional as they should when something would happen that would warrant a fairly strong reaction. This was not the case for most scenes though as I did end up tearing up a few times. The biggest gripe i would have is that the ending felt fairly quick and wasn't as emotional of a reunion they could've had. Although in a world full of trash anime this anime without a doubt stands on its feet. Definitely worth a watch. Favourite scene: Female lead sitting at the bus stop at the end.

It seems like a truly impressive work from beginning to end, and it really is. The beauty of the animation is remarkable and deeply captivating. The attention to detail and the overall animation quality help create a visually immersive world. The development of the couple is another strong point of the story. The way Kaoru and Hanashiro deal with their individual struggles while exploring the mysteries of the tunnel together adds a very human and emotional layer to the narrative. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and viewers can’t help but root for the couple, which I definitely did, especially near the end when they’re about to be together again. Even though their relationship doesn’t receive extremely deep development, it’s interesting how they only realize their feelings when there’s no longer time for them to be together. What makes it even more emotional is seeing that she kept the umbrella from their first meeting, shown in the very first minutes of the film, and that she carried it with her for years, waiting for the chance to give it back to Kaoru. It’s beautiful to notice the small messages woven into the film’s atmosphere. I highly recommend this movie.

Urashima Tunnel grants wishes in exchange for time. More specifically, whatever one desires lies somewhere along the tunnel. However, time goes much faster when going through the tunnel, and thus by the time the traversers reach what they wish for, the world moves on and leaves them behind. This film chronicles two high school students, Touno Kaoru and Hanashiro Anzu, who each have their own set of complicated circumstances but are united in that they each have wishes that they believe only the tunnel can grant. Still, choosing to go through the tunnel is quite the decision, and thus they extensively investigate the tunnel before committing. This takes up the majority of the film. To be honest, this investigation yields very little information of value. The pair do seem to discover rules regarding how the tunnel works, but during the final stretch of the film I think it becomes clear that these aren’t really hard rules. And that’s perfectly fine. After all, it is a supernatural phenomenon. So the actual circumstances of the tunnel aren’t what matter. The investigation is simply a backdrop to the pair spending time with each other and getting closer to each other, which in turn also allows the viewer to learn more about them and grow invested in them. Both have messy pasts that they’re trying to overcome. Touno’s are considerably more bleak in that his family has fallen apart and he lives with a violent alcoholic father that blames him for everything. Hanashiro’s on the other hand are more abstract and existential which adds a completely different layer to the narrative. This is conveyed well, and thus its easy to empathize with them and their desire to go through the tunnel. The two also have pretty good relationship development. Each of the two is pretty strange, and it’s that strangeness that initially brings them together. Touno seems relaxed and easy-going, but really he’s basically someone that’s given up on life to such an extent that very little phases him. Hanashiro on the other hand has this extreme sort of confidence and proactivity. There’s a scene from this film that went somewhat viral that features her very immediately and aggressively standing up to bullies which I think reflects her personality really well. Though underneath all that she does have some major insecurities. Both of them are quite likable at a personal level. And the two match each other quite well and have really good chemistry. And thus, its easy to get invested in each of them and their relationship. Most of the film isn’t all that intense and essentially just serves as build up. The final twenty or so minutes of the film is where everything truly happens. All the heavy emotional beats are concentrated during this phase. These hit pretty hard and definitely do leave an impression. However, the film moves very quickly and then ends abruptly right after that. It doesn’t really feel like things sink in properly. If the film continued a bit further and showed the aftermath better I think it would have really helped, both in terms of being better at orchestrating the audiences emotional response and also in tying up some loose minor plot threads. As is the ending is definitely still satisfying, but also feels a bit lacking. The art and animation in this film are great. Not at the level of the heavy hitters such as Shinkai’s films, but I felt the vision was pretty similar and it got closer than I expected it to. The soundtrack wasn’t as good, but still decent enough. There were a few good vocal tracks that worked pretty well in context. tl;dr: A film centered around teen angst with a great main couple but a rushed ending.
