Haikyu!! Movie: The Dumpster Battle
DigiCat
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it is Cats vs Crows, THE BATTLE OF THE GARBAGE DUMP IS HERE!!! The most anticipated match of the seires is finally on and It. Is. FIRE!! I will admit, seeing a runtime of only 1h25min for the long awaited Karasuno vs Nekoma, after the 10 episode epics that were vs Shiratorizawa and vs Inarizaki... i'd be lying if i said this didn't have me worried The question of "how are they gonna squeeze the match of the biggest rivalry of the show in such a short span of time??" lingered in my brain right up to the moment the match started on the silver screen But Haikyuu!! surpassed every expectation yet again! Somehow managing to incapsulate the epicness of an entire season into what would be just 4 episodes of runtime without sacrificing anything, i swear if you watched the vs Nekoma match alongside the vs Inarizaki match your brain would not be able to percieve the difference in runtime, how this movie has compacted not only the match, but the backstories, the flashbacks, the psychological analysis, the hilarious character interactions and not turned into a convoluted mess is beyond incredible As for the match itself, it is the perfect amalgamation of everything we've seen the past 4 seasons and more We got to see the matches from a spectators point of view in s1 & s2 & s3, from the players point of view in s4, and the experience of this movie can only be described as if your soul is splitting in 2 being able to watch the match from both points of view at once

It's been almost 3 and a half year since it's last Season and we all have been waiting for this to continue, This Movie is the best animation of Haikyuu!! , transaction between frames is soo fluid, and that POV scene is literally THE BEST SCENE IN whole movie, 90 mins of pure joy, This movie is Intense, fast paced, hilarious, exciting, wholesome. As a manga reader, I would say they did a decent job at the animation. There are definitely a lot of stuff cut out from the manga with most the attention being given to Hianta and Kenma, which to be fair makes sense with the movie running time of only 80 mins. But it's not enough. I want more, As for the soundtrack, it's excellent, and even though Spyair changed the singer, But they are still very, very good at it. This series is so good at building the hype moments. I love Haikyuu!! This series is my favorite sport anime.

This is the movie I've been waiting for for 4 years. I'm not complaining that this movie isn't good and they didn't upped the quality of animations and perspectives, especially the POV shots were so good that it felt like I was there in the court. They did well with production. Not that I've been completely disappointed with it but yes I'm partially disappointed. Up until the 4th season the seniors of Karasuno were their back and had great character development Daichi, Asahi, Tanaka etc, now suddenly they weren't so important. The Coach, Ukai sensei, who was taking breaks in every round to motivate and give game plans to the players was suddenly not so important in the movie. The audience and cheer leaders who were the backbone of their morales, suddenly vanished. They definitely upped the quality in production but dropped it on the aspects which make a sports anime worth watching. My bois Tanaka and Daichi were robbed. Ukai Sensei was robbed. Screen presence of Ukai-san is equal to zero. I enjoyed the movie and I was really on the edge at some points, but it still ain't a great movie. Normal 6-7/10.

Compared to the last few seasons, this felt like a compilation of what should've been a season... Everything was rushed (it's a film after all)... And it was a bit too fast-paced compared to the last few seasons. However... Everything was SO INCREDIBLY WELL MADE! This actually felt a lot more like a real volleyball match. Instead of focusing on ultra-big-brain mind games, this showed the actual fun side of volleyball: Simply playing it. Towards the end, the animations were just... INSANE, for the lack of a better word. That FPS shot felt like you were actually playing, and I just can't appreciate enough the skill and time needed to pull that off. In conclusion, I LOVED IT, but I would prefer the next few chapters to be seasons again, so that there is time for more character development. Meeting in the middle (between film-style and season-style) could make the next chapters a masterpiece. (Not that this isn't one...)

HAIKYUU !! THE DUMPSTER BATTLE Is a prime example of how sport animes should be handled , with a perfect mix of emotions and excitement that leaves the viewer in a complete awe. Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle is a thrilling masterpiece that perfectly captures the heart-pounding intensity of high-stakes volleyball while tugging at your heartstrings with its emotional depth. This movie is a love letter to fans of the series, delivering a visual and narrative spectacle that leaves you breathless and hungry for more. The match between Karasuno and Nekoma, famously dubbed "The Battle at the Garbage Dump," is the centerpiece of the film, and it does not disappoint. The highlighted plays are a marvel to behold ,Hinata's explosive jump , Kageyama's pinpoint sets, and Tsuki's calculated blocks create a mesmerizing choreography of skill and passion. Nekoma's unyielding defense, spearheaded by the Hawkeye Yaku and the lazy cat Kenma, adds layers of tension that keep you on the edge of your seat. What truly elevates the film is its ability to balance the electrifying gameplay with poignant emotional moments. The camaraderie, rivalries, and personal growth of each character shine through, making every point scored or lost feel deeply personal. The flashbacks and inner monologues give added weight to the stakes, reminding us why this matchup means so much to both teams. The animation is top-tier, with fluid movements and dynamic camera angles that immerse you in the game. The sound design and soundtrack amplify the energy of every rally, while quieter moments of reflection resonate deeply. funny enough comparing this movie to the current slideshow of PowerPoint lock, complete eye bleach !!! Overall, Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle is a must-watch for both die-hard fans and newcomers to the series. It masterfully combines adrenaline-fueled sports action with heartfelt storytelling, earning a solid 9 out of 10 in my book. I’m beyond excited to see where the series goes next. 🏐🔥

I have to admit that this movie, although I wanted it to be a new season of the series, didn't ruin my expectations of Haikyuu! This movie was great, they did a great job of capturing this long-awaited battle. It was as if this wasn't a sports anime, it was action, war, and killing! The animation and graphics of some parts of the match, especially the final set, made me think that they couldn't have made a movie better than this! I had actually read the manga before, but they did it so well! Even the part where we saw the match from Kenma's perspective, my mouth was really open until the end, I was breathing along with Kenma, my heart was beating at a thousand. This anime is even more underrated than it is! People should watch more Haikyuu! Haikyuu is definitely in my top 5 favorite anime list! Both the manga and the anime are completely satisfying! At some points, I almost cried from the excitement and feeling it conveyed to me, and I was really upset! But the trash can battle was executed wonderfully! The work of the director, the studio, the animation team, and above all the mangaka was speechless! Okay, I was so excited that I talked a lot. Let's move on to the criteria: First of all, the story was as expected, very wonderful! So much so that in the first part, with Hinata's complete blocking, I also felt sad and under pressure, but fortunately, Hinata really took off in this series! And in general, this sense of excitement that was in Kenma, in addition to his team and Hinata, made me happy, and all of this has the effect of the always strong story of Haikyuu. The animation was wonderful! Some sequences I could no longer breathe from how great it was! Could the character be any better? Our team and our always rival team were all in there! Tsukishima also had a very cool and high character development and I loved his conversation and competition with Kuro, and the reactions he showed warmed my heart.... I won't explain further to avoid spoilers. And the music was also very well managed! Where the song should have been playing, it was great, and where we needed more excitement, concentration, and anxiety, the music was cut off by management and replaced with sound effects. In addition, the voice actors, as always, showed their art! Especially the part where Hinata screams with joy and Kenma gasps really caught my attention! This is it! This is the always wonderful Haikyuu! I can't wait for the next movie and I'm really looking forward to it. Although I think we're actually expected to have two more movies.

I think this is a worthy first part for the ending of Haikyuu. I have heard many complains about the pacing but in my opinion, it's quite the opposite. I think the pacing was perfect. Exactly how fast paced sport animes should. It still had flashbacks, who were most of the time recaps we already knew but the pacing itself was fantastic. Story (7): The story is pretty cool. Exactly what to expect. And I really liked the introduction in the beginning. But I just think they overdid it with some of the flashbacks, especially them all concluding with the same message. Characters (7): I liked the characters as well as I did in the Haikyuu Show. They are a bit tacky maybe a bit on the nose and simple at times but all around well written. What really annoyed me here was that each and every character had to go through his entire motivations at the start of the movie. They tried to be subtle about it but it just felt like useless information to everyone who watched the show first. (And why wouldn't you?) Art/Sound (9): The art is just amazing. The animations are amazing, I love that they kept the style of the show but elevated it several notches. The camera angles are as interesting as ever. But the sound design cemented this experience, it was something I didn't think this movie would be that good at. Enjoyment (9): I was hyped and hooked from the very beginning. Just the repetition of things we already knew tampered my excitement a little. Overall: 8.0

If you are expecting manga levels of detail and pacing; you will be a bit disappointed. Otherwise, this was a very enjoyable movie. My biggest gripes in general would be as follows: • The pacing felt very fast (to be expected of a movie with only an hour and a half runtime). • A lot less of the game shown. I would have preferred to see more of the sets rather than constant cuts. The good outweighs the bad though. I loved the animation style with the newer seasons and this movie and it felt very fluid. Seeing more of Nekomata, namely Kenma and Kuroo, was very nice. Seeing their love for volleyball grow as they did was touching and really set in stone how much this game meant to them. While I do wish that we would have seen more of the Karasuno squad, I was left satisfied.

I really love this movie. Kenma’s journey before and after getting into high school volleyball is super detailed. Even though the flashbacks can drag on a bit and get kind of boring sometimes, it didn't stop me from finishing it. The balance between the flashbacks and the current match feels just right, so it never feels awkward to watch. Plus, the animation quality actually feels way better than the main series. I feel like any Haikyu!! fan would be super curious about or really love this movie. Especially since Hinata and Kenma are actually good friends off the court, and this match is a huge deal for both of them. Naturally, Kenma’s gonna figure out Hinata’s weaknesses and pull off a strategy to completely shut him down during the game.

I watched Haikyuu some years ago up until the end of To the top (season 4), I remembered binge reading the manga for the remaining story and it was so good. The anime, the manga, each match, each character, each moment, even to each music piece and manga panel, it hook me up. I actually forgot a lot about the whole story after years, then I binge watch it again. It was as good as ever. I know the outcome of each big match but cannot help but enjoy the game. This movie is good. The cinematic views, the fast pace exaggerate drawing, the music, the pacing overall it's all good. I would recommend people to watch it. I like this movie, I love it from start to end. Solid. Then I wonder about what's happening in the match, before the match, and after the match. For a movie about the GREATEST rivalry in the whole series, it lacks. It creates good small build ups through flashbacks for Kuroo and Kenma. But what about Lev ? What about Inouka ? What about all the others ? A pinch server for Nekoma, 0 build ups, making his speech "I want to play in the real game next time" feels a bit light. It simply has so little time. I know it has to fit a movie, but because of that we don't get to hear more the thoughts of everyone, we don't get to see enough of Nekoma's defense vs Karasuno's attack and Nekoma's attack vs Karasuno's defense. Again, for the GREATEST rivalry in the whole series, the movie just show us "another great game" instead of "the rivalry". After reading some reviews saying there's more to the manga, I read at the start of the arc. And I kid you not, the first panel is talking about the rivalry of 2 teams' old coaches. THEY CUT THAT OUT. And to avoid spoilers, I will just say they cut off 80% of characters' build up and thoughts and actions. They cut out so many good things and even some of the more important scenes are altered, and I think that is worse. I would love for this match to be a short season like vs Shiratorizawa.

This movie was incredible. If you’re a Haikyuu fan, it’s a must-watch. I kept delaying it since 2024 because I didn’t want to accept that the anime might not come back, but I’m glad I waited — the nostalgia hit hard. It brought me right back to watching Haikyuu week by week in 2014. What makes this movie special isn’t just the animation or the hype plays, but the bonds between the characters. The rivalry between Nekoma and Karasuno is one of the most wholesome and competitive dynamics in anime. They push each other, respect each other, and give everything they have, and the movie captures that perfectly. In just one hour, the intensity matched an entire season of Haikyuu. It reminded me why I love this series — it’s human, emotional, and full of heart. I haven’t finished the manga yet, but now I want to buy all the volumes and experience everything myself. This movie reignited my love for Haikyuu, and honestly, for anime and manga as a whole.

i think compliments on the movie are in order first. im so happy that the animation is good again cause i was dying watching the to the top seasons (especially the later episodes). the scenes themselves were all really well done and i loved a lot of the sequences like the final rally. my biggest complaint is the length. for how fleshed out and in a sense long all the other major opponents that karasuno faces are this felt short in comparison. the match against Shiratorizawa was 10 episodes, this is just the equivalent of 3 episodes. the biggest consequence we only get glimpses into the mind games and how the characters feel. so much of the series has built up to this match, and i really wanted it to be more in a lot of ways or at least longer. lol some part of me tho just copes and should just read the manga

Overall pretty good, but an oddly mixed bag. This will just be bullet points: It's the effective runtime of 4 episodes, which means this makes for an unusually short match considering its importance for a big portion of the show's characters. Given that they still budget a lot of time for player background stories, the whole thing ends up quite rushed. The animation is rather inconsistent. We get a bunch of really nice longer flowing fully animated play sequences, but also quite a few, mostly non-action, that look like the interns did them. There's oddly little character flavor. They focus quite heavily on a few players and the other characters almost disappear. I was like halfway through and started wondering if they even got the actual voice actors for some of the guys, Kageyama and Tanaka included. They take a distant backseat in this one. Haikyuu loves building towards epic emotional match moments by showing you past comments or lessons leading into a moment. They dial it up in this one while also doing a noticeably worse job of it. It simply doesn't work as well as we're used to from the show, and for the first time I found myself wanting them to just get on with it instead. It says I.G. on the box, but my guess would honestly have been that a new studio did this. The vibe was very different and so were the priorities. It felt oddly off, but it's still very much worth watching.

THIS IS A SPOILER-FREE REVIEW „Haikyuu“ was one of the first big Anime franchises that i properly got into after shows like “My Hero Academia introduced me to the medium back in 2016. To this day, i still believe that Haikyuu is not only one of the greatest sports anime of all time, but also one of the best overall anime shows that I have ever seen. Every season was consistently upping the stakes and emotions. 3 Years have passed since the release of “Haikyuu – To the Top” and the community was eagerly awaiting the first of the two movies that are supposed to bring this franchise to an end. But does “Haikyuu – The dumpster battle” live up to the hype? Story – 8/10 Right from the start, the movie introduces you to it´s main theme, which is the famous rivalry between the crows (Karasuno) and the cats (Nekoma). Both teams have been introduced way back in season one. We have seen some character interactions and even some training matches, but the two never faced off in a tournament bracket up until now. Karasuno, coming of a spectacular upset win against the tournaments second seed, Inarizaki, is now poised to finally reignite the old rivalry and beat the cats in Japans national tournament. The build-up over four seasons easily makes this one of the most anticipated duels of the series so far. The game itself was an example of classic Haikyuu-storytelling. Great character moments, suspense and highly interesting tactics makes this game a blast to watch. Everything that is great about Haikyuu is in this movie, so even if you´ve been out of the franchise for a long time, you can easily jump back into it with this film. Still, this movie is not without it´s flaws. I thought the pacing seemed a little bit off. I honestly think this movie should have been a little bit longer to fully flesh out the tactics, as well as some of Kenmas backstory. However, the biggest let-down of the movie was the ending. I won´t exactly tell what happens because of spoilers, but the ending itself felt very abrupt, and unsatisfying. Which is surprising because as far as I can remember, Haikyuu always ended it´s matches on some kind of special play or decision-making. This however felt a little bit of, which hurts the movie in the long run. Art – 9/10 This is easily the best that Haikyuu has ever looked. Seeing these characters on the big screen is a great experience in of itself, but even the quality of the animation has stepped up a lot. The big movie budget definitely helped, so a lot of the very rough artstyle changes during the course of season 4 are completely gone now. The movie also makes use of some fantastic and creative uses of animation. The biggest wow-moment in this movie came right before the end of the match and was one of the best and climatic long-shots in sports anime history, which left the whole cinema speechless for a while. Great stuff here. Sound – 7/10 The voice-acting in Haikyuu remains some of the best in the whole medium, no questions. But other than that, there is not much to talk about in this category. There is no opening, because this is a movie. Also, to set the atmosphere and tone of a volleyball tournament, the director decided to leave a lot of the scenes completely without music, which is a very interesting stylistic approach in this day and age, because a lot of recent sports anime rely on music a LOT (Especially new-gen shows like “Blue-Lock”). But I think it worked really well for the type of grounded story they wanted to tell here. Characters – 8/10 They did something really interesting in this movie. During the whole course of the show, Karasuno was always our main team, and Hinata was always our main character. This movie flipped the tables completely. Kenma is the definitive main character of this movie, and we literally see the match through the eyes of him and his team, trying to manipulate, outplay and adapt to Karasuno, and most importantly, to Hinata. It was really interesting to see Nekomas unique approach to the game. Everyone has time to shine but the absolute highlight was the relationship between Kuroo and Kenma, which gets the most screen-time of all the little subplots here. The pool of characters in this show is amazing, and we even get little cameos from earlier seasons like Tendo from Shiratorizawa and of course, fan-favourite Bokuto. Enjoyment – 9/10 This was a highly enjoyable movie with great characters, an interesting new main character dynamic and fantastic animation. If you like Haikyuu, this is a must see in cinemas. The second movie has already been announced, and if it comes close to this one, it is a definitive must-watch as well. - Marco_Yooo FINAL SCORE - 8/10
Rifuruuu
As expected from Production I.G., the animation in this film is stunning. Every move, jump, and surge is rendered with incredible detail and fluidity. The match between Karasuno and Nekoma is intense and impressive, showcasing strategy, teamwork, and volleyball techniques that effectively convey the tension and enthusiasm of the game. Familiar characters such as Hinata, Kageyama, Kenma, and Kuroo take center stage, adding depth to the story through their interactions and dynamics. The anime is also filled with heartfelt emotional moments. The themes of struggle, determination, and friendship are truly inspiring, allowing the audience to connect with the characters on a deeper level. The music and sound effects enhance the atmosphere, with an energetic and emotional soundtrack that underscores key moments in the match. However, there are some drawbacks, particularly regarding the film's pacing. While the main match is very intense, certain parts of the film, especially the beginning where the background and setting are established, may feel slow. Additionally, the main characters receive significant focus, which can leave some supporting characters underdeveloped, making some moments seem less impactful. For die-hard fans of Haikyuu!!, expectations may run high, and some viewers might feel that certain aspects of the story or match do not fully meet those expectations, particularly in terms of conflict resolution and character development.

"all we gotta do is lower the net. the 'joy from doing' should be what's important, first and foremost." although "the dumpster battle" is not a perfect adaptation, it is still such an amazing experience. seeing the same characters, whose journey i've been following ever since i was in middle school, on a big screen was unbelievable. the audio mixing was great. i love how in certain moments sound was completely gone, leaving the watcher in a state of uneasiness. the animation was mostly amazing, especially during the action sequences. there was one scene that i wish was done better, but well. the pacing was the biggest enemy of this movie. considering how much time anime reserves for characters' thoughts, cutting out some of the dialogue or speeding it up instead of building tension, was quite irking.

Watched it today. I couldn't stop crying, too much emotion. It was really centered around Kenma and his background, maybe there's a bit of a similarity with the Tsukki's phase during the shiratori zawa game, but it was more powerful and even more emotional to me There's an interesting Kenma camera POV scene, when he was cornered. Some may dislike it. It really surprised me and I wasn't expecting this so I liked it and I think it is quite representative of what it can be when you're on the court : you can't see everything that is happening, especially from an exhausted setter POV. In the previous seasons I was used to scenes around really impressives volleyball moves, in this films there were less of them, and instead more "emotion-powered" type of scenes, imo I guess it was short compared to the number of chapter that game has in the manga, but it didn't bother me too much. Dunno what to add, so, definitely watch it, especially if you're a haikyuu fan
TangyAbleOrange
It's a thoroughly satisfying under-2-hour movie that is equal parts intense and wholesome. (I wish more movies these days were under 2 hours.) It's actually rather impressive that it manages to keep the tension up in such a straightforward way. The show itself has at times used unsportsmanlike plot elements like a player cheating or audience distraction stuff, and has also presented antagonistic characters in relatively dislikable ways, but this conflict is just simply... straightforward. There are no dislikable characters, it's just got sheer good-natured competitive fun permeating everywhere. It's fun. Tone aside, the plot is pretty straightforward. Naturally. It's a movie about a singular volleyball game. Of course, straightforward isn't bad. I loved it. Like the show, as usual, the use of flashbacks is woven into the ongoing events and provides character background and depth at effective times. In terms of thrilling emotional impacts, the kind like when Tsukishima blocked Ushijima, this movie certainly has them (though, not quite at that level of thrill). I can't exactly put into words what a certain first-person point of view sequence near the end had me feeling, but if I had to try, I'd say it felt nice. I think the one thing I was left wanting from this movie was more detail in the animation. It's not at all bad, though the quality and dynamism is something I would've loved to see utilized particularly to enhance certain moments. And that's about it. It's a very fun movie.

There are so, so many great things to note about this movie and I am just going to cover the surface of those things. I had the treat of watching this in theaters, and first of all, wow, the animation, emphasized by the big screen this time around was---absolutely fantastic, with the director of the first 3 seasons of Haikyuu, Susumu Mitsunaka, returning to production. The variety of POV's were nothing short of incredible---there was a first-person POV that completely rendered everyone in the theater speechless; it's still unfathomable that this movie is 2D. The bright colors, perspectives, and POV's completely took you in. Every time the music abruptly stopped or started was a time you knew something big was going to happen and got the adrenaline pumping. Some characters were understandably more highlighted than others, but the ones that were undoubtedly showed growth and overall character development from even the last match against Inarizaki. The comedy was present, as per usual, and definitely got laughs from the audience. Absolutely delightful the movie touched upon the huge theme "we-are-just-human," conveying every player's frustration, excitement, and fatigue whether they were on and off the court. Voice acting---no complaints, everyone was delightful to listen to whether you felt like they were screaming in your ear or giving the most heart-wrenching (I still don't know if I can consider it platonic after all that fanservice) confessions to one another. One of the best parts about this movie is you weren't rooting for one side, you were rooting for both. The characters on each side of the court were as lovable as any other. 10/10 movie and now my current favorite, I came out of the theater floating like I was the MVP of this insane match.

Imagine the whole attack on titan season 3 part 2 in one hour. Or I don't know what are you familiar with, like the whole Harry Potter universe in just one movie. And I don't say it is bad, but would you really live in the world of breaking bad being just one season? Would you be satisficed enough if all of the season 3 was just a movie? Haikyuu is my all time favorite anime and as a fan I would rather never watch this poster of an anime and just read the manga for the appreciation of the first 4 seasons, because this movie is not a story. This is just compilation of a story.
