The Apothecary Diaries is one of my favorite anime's in my list, it's first season intro and outro is so relaxing, i listen to it everytime. i love how beautifully it's made, there are so many misteries, stories, puzzels, you'll fall in love with this the more you watched it, so 10/10 from me, if i can compare this masterpeiece other it reminds me of freiren, i the same wibe from maomao, her behaviour, mischief smile, if you have a good storyline taste you will love it. Thank you to all writers, sketch artists, designers, animators, voice actors, your incredible work is that we learn and grow our imagination.

10/10 its slow paced slow burner slow life masterpiece. I’m not gonna score a 2 and call everyone out for not watching anime from pre-2018 and proceed to ridicule people for being a new anime fan like a certain reviewer that score this a 2/10 lol, writing all that damn paragraphs just to spout nonsense is probably just a dedicated hater LOL. TMI, i am known to be notorious professional skipper. when its get boring, cringy or i feel its irrelevant and irritating i would just skip the scene to skip anything i find unneeded and start to search whats interesting. So far, i haven’t skip a shit other than the OP & ED LOL (chill i have my own rule to watch the 1st and 13th episode opening and ending to atleast know the songs). Mind if i tell you i just finished this anime in one sitting, watching this from satuday morning till night. And now i’m writing this review not even 30 minutes after i finish this series. I’ve just finished watching Unnamed memory 1st season a few days ago, and maybe thats why i love this anime so much because of the disappointment i had with unnamed memory. Lets get to the point, It is as it shown at the disclaimer that this isnt a true story, its FULLY FICTIONAL. But, its fully realistic. In every kind of way, this anime is realistic. The storytelling, emotion, pacing and how light the character introducions is but i still felt the connection it made between me and the character is indeed a classy masterpiece. The story itself is already intriguing hence why the little background story didn’t feel like a bother. This anime doesn’t feel shallow at all. The unfinished conflict doesn’t feel a bother at all because the build up is so good i didn’t question any of the timeline. I thought this would be the typical slow life medicine based anime like the usual filler anime that just fill the season in. But, its actually really different. It has the feel of slow life and chill anime at the start but the conflicts and the premise of this story….. ho ho…. ITS SO RICH and different. I’m not confident in saying this is original because i’m not certain that this is the only anime that have this premise. But all i can say this is a breath a new and fresh air since a long time. Imagine detective conan in the chinese 15th century setting??? mind boggling. The last arc was… tasteful… I love this anime as much as how i love Gintama’s Courtesan of A Nation Arc. One of gintama’s MASTERPIECE ARC. If you know sheena ringo’s song called crime and punishment, this damn hit the spot. The characters. DAMN, i actually can’t think of anything to write other than they are all well written. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Even the male mc’s cringiest moment wasn’t too disgusting because the female mc (maomao) FELT DISGUSTED AS WELL LIKE I DID HAHAHA. Yes indeed some people may feel bored by the pacing, if you find this anime boring. Its safe to assume that either this isn’t your cup of tea or you haven’t learn how to enjoy slow pace. And thats not wrong at all. For an instance, maybe its not your time yet to enjoy slow paced adaptation thats all! The animation, Fluid, no clunks, physics realistic and smooth. No bother at all, its really good. And lastly, if only you’re curious and read this till the end. I watch anime before i learn how to write, thats 20 years ago. My first one? Voltes, watched it on VCD player. Been watching anime diligently for almost 12 years. And no, i do not look like the so called discord mod. I go to the gym, and a fully functioning adult that touch grass daily. This anime doesn’t deserve any hate at all. I didn’t pardon any of their lacks because i didn’t find anything lacking to begin with. This is a complete anime.

highly recommended, mao mao is not a annoying main character at all, nor is a mary sue, she has flaws and specialties and i love he subtle romance beweeen mao mao and jinshi. an absolute BANGER!! it's plot is good and believable, mostly depends if it's your cup of tea but id say it likeable, it doesnt revole around romance but has sprinkles of it, and some of the characters do be getting sorta relatable, it has a mix of realism but fantasy at the same time, it's so unique in the sea of new animes, the art is amazing. the characters are realistic enough in my opinion.

This show is set in ancient China. I haven’t watched much anime or TV set in this period before, but I was hooked from the first episode. Seeing Maomao, our main character, transition from her humble beginnings to the show’s end is a journey, and I felt part of that journey in every episode. Medicine plays an important role in this show. If you’ve enjoyed House M.D., you’ll probably love this show, even though their only similarity is the focus on medicine. Each case is solved through pure intellect and some medicinal knowledge. It’s fun and intriguing to learn these facts as well. The evidence is presented to us, and it’s up to the viewer to solve it along with Maomao, which keeps the audience hooked until the case is resolved! One aspect I really liked is the different dynamics of the rear palace and the pleasure district. As someone who isn’t from China, it was fascinating to watch how people used to interact, their social roles, and the different statuses. It was a truly educational experience! Lastly, the relationships in this show are a breath of fresh air. The romance feels natural and not forced. Different characters have different personalities and different circumstances. Also a side point, in recent films with female protagonists, sometimes it feels like they’re trying too hard to prove the character is tough. But here, Maomao’s strength feels real, as she endures and overcomes the hardships she faces. It comes off as authentic. Also, Maomao is a cat :D

Kusuriya made us fall in love with his first part, but with the second he told us that it was better to give ourselves some time to think about things. First of all, it must be made clear that this is a work that I highly recommend for anyone. The first part of the story, for me, is one that every person has to see because of the fidelity it has to the era where it is set. Maomao as the protagonist is a 10/10, she is a character who in each chapter put the anime on her back to carry her. He had a fairly large secondary cast that generated interactions that were quite fun to watch. The medical mysteries and the themes that were explored thanks to the existence of the concubines and the brothel are of high interest. The first part, except for chapter 4, I fell completely in love with and I thought that our relationship would be a long-lasting one. Unfortunately, with the arrival of the 2nd part it became an anime that I didn't know, everything that I fell in love with in the first part there was hardly any sign of it in the second part. Starting with the fact that the secondary cast was drastically cut. They took away the emperor's concubines, the princess and her growth process, the concubines' companions, the charlatan doctor and who knows what else, only to replace him with Jinshi, his assistant and a lady who works with them. The medical mysteries went on vacation and in exchange they gave us a political plot that became predictable as it progressed (for God's sake, the opening gave you spoilers on how a mystery was solved and didn't try to be discreet about it). The villain or antagonist of the second half didn't do well either, he was introduced as a malicious, heartless military strategist who would go to any lengths to play with people if it meant getting out of boredom with him. As the chapters passed, they regretted it and decided to make the villain a relative of Maomao in order to give the protagonist an origin story, something that was not even necessary and that no one asked for. Towards the end, they repented again and changed the villain's intentions for the third time, giving him a better tragic love story where he was only a victim of circumstances and was not as bad as initially believed. In conclusion, you may not have lost interest in the relationship you had with Kusuriya in these six months. Personally, it may just be anger because I had high expectations for the anime but they couldn't meet them. Despite everything, I would still recommend the anime to people who haven't seen it, because the first part of the anime is everything that is good in the industry. Kusuriya and I will take some time, since a second season was announced for 2025. We must keep expectations high, since Kusuriya showed that he can meet the high standards. We should never settle when someone gives us less than what they showed us at the beginning.

First of all, it was a pretty decent anime with really nice artwork, in my opinion. But man, it wasn’t the kind of series that made me think, Wow, what a great anime I should watch it again. It was a season where, on one hand, I kept wondering if I should just give up, but on the other hand, I told myself, Come on, I’ve already started I should finish it, even though I occasionally felt the urge to switch to another anime. The reason is most likely that there was too much romance for my taste since I’m not a big fan of romance but you might consider it an anime to watch with your girlfriend; if you watch it that way, it might be more enjoyable. The mysteries somehow keep you watching at least they give you the motivation to finish it. Like I said, it’s watchable for me, but it’s not an anime I’d say you absolutely have to watch though I’ll give the second season a look too, since I’ve already started it, I might as well finish it. :D

After watching this show, I can confirm it’s a fresh and unique concept, which I put off for two years, and only watched it now, for some reason. Upon watching this show now, I can truly say this show puts a unique spin on the historical mystery drama genre. I am probably not the main intended audience for the show; however, I enjoyed it very much anyway as it’s truly a very entertaining show. The narrative is well-structured, and although the pace may be deliberate, its value lies in how it unifies the plot, culminating in a striking revelation. The back-and-forth dialogue is also very engaging with the audience and truly captures attention from all. Overall, the writing truly deserves the praise it receives. The writing of the story was done very well, and no parts of the show ever seemed disheveled, unlike other shows that try to do too many things at once and end up confusing the story. The development of the narrative is also another thing that deserves its praise. Top-tier reveals with the mystery setting were done extremely well, and its scientific accuracy was also very enjoyable. The animation style was fine, nothing over the top; however, I would have liked it to match the quality of the story and the potential would have been limitless. But overall, the quality was fine and consistent, which is the most important part. Voice acting was done very well too. I could feel myself immersed in the story and could feel their emotions. What really sets this show apart from others is its world-building. I would argue that the world-building made this show unique. The setting might be common and overdone, as there have been many shows based on ancient China, but this show really does things that encapsulate a different perspective of a unique point of view. And this really is what makes this show a one of a kind. The individual episodes intertwine cohesively, with each episode building upon each other with proper set up, which I appreciated thoroughly. Emotional elements of this show also proved effective, though its narrative dictated this, previously lauded. This show was truly a gem. I believe it had the potential to excel if it had the proper resources; however, it does amazingly with what it already has and can call itself a masterpiece even. The praise this show receives is very well deserved, and I would even praise it as well, especially with the storytelling and world-building. Overall, I can definitely recommend this show as a must-watch, as its one of the best shows I’ve seen from 2023.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto came into my life at a time when I felt completely lost. Everything felt gray and meaningless, and even the things I used to enjoy just faded into the background. Then, somehow, I started watching this show. I didn’t expect anything from it. I just wanted to fill the silence. But something about it slowly reached me. The quiet intelligence of Maomao, her curiosity, and her stubborn resilience began to feel like tiny sparks of life when I thought mine was gone. The way the series shows her pushing through confusion, staying grounded in reason, even when surrounded by chaos, reminded me that even small acts of persistence can matter. There’s something incredibly gentle about how Kusuriya no Hitorigoto moves. The way each episode takes its time, the muted emotions hidden under calm expressions, the soft light, the stillness. It gave me a sense of order and beauty when my thoughts were scattered and heavy. For half an hour at a time, I could breathe again. It sounds simple, but that consistency, that quiet rhythm, helped me remember what it felt like to care about something again. I know it’s just an anime, but for me it was a small thread that kept me connected to the world. Every episode felt like a reminder that curiosity is still worth something, that healing doesn’t always come as a big moment. Sometimes it’s slow, subtle, like Maomao solving another mystery. I’m grateful for that. for the original frensh version of the review: omg pi la sa zoom sur les chopsticks, so blehhhh dégouté. Car elle l'aime pas, un vria mystère. (EN-PT) The pacing is the real highlight of this show — it just knows how to hook you into the next episode The animation is simple yet perfect, fitting the tone of the story along with the soundtrack and everything else It only falls short of a 10 because, around the middle, it gets a bit repetitive: “rumors about a death/illness, Jinshi asks if Maomao knows, she confirms, he asks her to investigate, she accepts, she notices something important but the show doesn’t explain it yet, and by the end of the episode everything is revealed, she gets some kind of poison, and that’s it.” This loop works for a while, but what really makes the score go up is when all those investigations tie back to a single official Then, on top of that, there’s the whole resolution with Maomao’s family, and the story wraps up brilliantly! I’m hyped for season 2 to have a tighter lore — that’s when it’ll truly hit a 10! The characters are insanely captivating and feel organic, which is definitely one of the strongest points of the show. It’s definitely the kind of series I’d recommend both to anime fans and to people outside the anime world. The soap-opera vibe mixed with a slice-of-life touch creates a light atmosphere that I think would click with most casual viewers.

You know, I forget there's so much power in editing when it comes to anime. “The Apothecary Diaries”. A series I couldn't see myself enjoying too much. A story about old China. An apothecary is trafficked to be sold as a servant to a concubine palace where she wishes not to stick out, but her medical knowledge far exceeds that of everybody else. Her desires to not see anyone dying from preventable problems, make her hiding impossible. The premise does sound good, but I had an inkling on the presentation. After recently watching other anime which were severely brought down by their anime-isms, I was scared to find this one to follow something similar. The screenshots looked like that type of gag story which, yes, could be serious, but it had the sudden cat ears, the chibi art style change for jokes, the sound design of old slice of life absurdism which permeates anime. However, I had to give it a watch, as it was hailed as one of the best modern anime out there. They're right about everything said. It wasn't at all what I expected. It was a serious story about the many societal issues faced at that time. Be it medical, social, humanitarian, these people feel as real as they should. They've lived in this world for their whole lives, and of course they wouldn't see many things wrong with what happens in it. The past was defined by the lack of knowledge, and a person with more knowledge in a small community makes a world of differences. A small apothecary changes the world around her, even if she wishes not to do so. By virtue of her existence, the people around her stay alive. She herself has layers upon layers of self-analysis, and reflection. She has infinite time to think about her life, and she constantly encounters things which let her ponder on her context. Every other character fits with just that. Complex people, nor good, or absolutely terrible. All of them have many reasons to be who they are. People we don't know too much of has these little details sprinkled, which add much respect from my part. Other's have a life which is slowly revealed, just with conversations, as if you were slowly getting to know them. Everyone in the story is someone you slowly get to know, unless they get a moment to reflect on their lives. This series strips down the clichés in presentation, and extrapolates everything that works, and everything that doesn't, and creates a piece of work which I haven't experienced in such a long time. Comedy bits stopped right as it was enough, sudden flashes of deeply important expressions occurred, something which I don't think I've seen outside more psychological stories. Tense scenes lack music, and tensions are added by showing inserts, small coverage of the surroundings. It's an anime which knows the power of a thought-cut, a Chekov gun, a knife, which could be used as a violent climax, even if it doesn't. Showing before telling, and using 1+1 as a philosophy. I can't express this enough. This show respects you enough to put the pieces together. There are so many moments where information is very new to us, but the show doesn't pull attention towards it as much as anime usually does. The characters talk about it normally, because it is for them. The world around them isn't trying to make the information important, unless it's something they just found out. Everything is inferred, changed, all based on who is experiencing information. I adore this show. It's amazingly well-paced, funny when it has to be, entertaining, beautiful, soul-crushing, and slow, brooding, when it must. It stops at times, and lets you soak in the themes of a scene. The show tries a little hard sometimes to really get a point across, by being subtle-forced, where it's like “please get it, please get it”, but yes show, I do get it, and I appreciate it. Almost nothing wrong with the show. The historical details are so great to see on screen, too. Like there being things like greenhouses constructed out of whim of the higher-ups, without the people giving the thing the name itself. Things like that enrich the story so much, it's insane. All this, with stellar animation to boot. 9.4/10. Almost a 10, if it weren't for some episodes being a little cumbersome to get through.

This anime is so incredible in all aspects, that i had to write a review about it. Plese, if you are thinking if you should watch it or not, give it a chance, I'm certain you will not regret it. Let me say something, I'm surely not a fan of historical anime, and thought i wouldn't like this show when I first encountered it. How of a fool I was. The plot is a 10/10, the characters too, the subtle romance is so cute i can't even describe it. Maomao is such a good character, and her love for what she does is amazing and contagius. The mistery of this show is very good too, making you think about everything that is happening. The lore of each character is equally interesting and touching.

I started watching this anime when it came out, and I was intrigued from the first episodes. I was especially interested in Maomao. At first, the age difference between Jinshi and Maomao was too much and I thought that the relationship between the two could be a romantic relationship in the future. When I started reading the manga, I learned that the age difference is not what I knew (this is also learned in the anime). That's why some people said it was a silly series, but it wasn't. There are different mysteries in every episode and that's why I can say that every episode is full and good, but I don't understand what the purpose is. I'm thinking of starting the LN soon if I can find it. Sometimes the character drawings get worse, that is, the characters' types change and it annoys me. But even so, I liked it very much in terms of plot and progression. My sister also started watching it, and while he was watching it, I was looking at it once in a while and what I thought was that the first episodes were good, but then we had no information about the characters or something like that, so I can say that it started to get much more beautiful after the first 8-10 episodes, but it was beautiful in the first episodes. So in short, I recommend you to watch it. I can also say that it has become one of my favorite series of this year.

Cour 1: Besides Frieren, Apothecary Diaries is the most hyped up new anime to air during the Fall 2023 season, and I can definitely see why the source material was received well. What makes this anime one of the best of this season has to be because of the main character in Maomao. There is so much character work for her, I don’t think there’s a single moment where I was not bored of her character in this half of the season. Maomao is funny, smart, while also having motivations and desires that add a level of grounded-ness to her, and because of this, we get some great scenes of her sharing to both other characters and us viewers a lot of meaningful goals for her as an apothecary and a servant in the inner palace. Speaking of, the drama and politics of this anime with all of the consorts and nobles have a lot of intrigue to them, so much so that there is always something engaging taking place, no matter where the show is currently focused on. The anime is very episodic which I like since this gives the show an episode or two to focus on whatever incident occurred, giving both the characters and us audiences a plethora of opportunities to see Maomao do her apothecary duties in various ways, learning about medicines and drugs that are driving these storylines forward, and having the protagonist act as an audience surrogate to learn about the struggles of other people living and working in this palace. The only minor complaint that I have for this anime so far has to be that the first few episodes that aired together felt a little rushed for me. Apothecary Diaries opens with Maomao before she was kidnapped and sold to be a worker in the palace, but there isn’t a lot of time for us to soak in all of the plot points that are just dumped on us: Maomao being kidnapped and having her life completely change by being a worker in a palace, how that affects her and the people she left behind, Maomao adjusting to her new life, etc. I know this is only minor, but to be completely honest, the first few episodes that aired together felt a bit like a fever dream. It’s not to the point where I’d say it’s bad or you should watch this anime while drunk or anything, but I would have liked it to be just a little bit better paced. Outside of that, watching Maomao do her thing with drugs and help solve the abundance of mysteries definitely keeps me going with this anime and wanting more each week. Cour 2: The second half of The Apothecary Diaries takes a slightly different approach to what we saw in the first cour, and for the most part, it worked out well. Instead of Maomao dabbling in drugs, the latter half of this season puts more emphasis on the mystery elements of this series while also delving deeper into the backstories of some of the most important characters in this anime. Newer side characters like Lakan are given ample screen time to not only add more depth to this series, but to also tie-in to the central characters and create some very compelling narratives. I actually prefer when this show throws Maomao and Jinshi through the ringer and have them solve daunting mysteries and uncover some very dark and tragic backstories that surround everyone and everything in the Imperial Palace. Outside of this anime focusing less on the herbal and medicinal side of things, you’re basically getting the same thing in this half of the season as you did in the first: mysteries and good characterization. However, one issue that I have with this cour that is a slight drawback for this show is how information is conveyed to us. There are times when the characters go on very long bouts of exposition that could have very easily been drip-fed to us in a more engaging manner. For example, the episode with the three brothers has a very interesting premise and conclusion, however the characters in the episode repeatedly explain what the dynamic between these three siblings is like. We’re led to believe that these three brothers used to be close to one another but grew distant as time went on, with the father’s will seemingly being the key to bring them back together, but it’s hard for me to be emotionally invested in this narrative when the characters have to exposition-dump their upbringing and the relationships they had with one another instead of giving us at least a flashback or two. This is one example of a few where there are some slight cracks in the writing. Ultimately, this doesn’t stop The Apothecary Diaries from being a really good drama and mystery anime to follow. Overall, I really liked what I saw from this anime, and I’m fully on-board for the second season.

It has been quite some time since a new series has grabbed so much interest and hooked viewers, eagerly awaiting the next episode. Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, or The Apothecary Diaries, managed to gain a lot of traction and has easily become a favourite for many members. However, is it worth the hype and praise? Short Version: The short answer is yes, very much so. The story is unique, unpredictable (in a good way) and really allows watchers to enjoy putting the puzzle pieces together while falling in love with a wide cast of characters. Many aspects are believable and felt real including relationships, situations and the answers to the mysteries. The show is very beautiful and knows how to use it's medium very well. The art and music aid in the storytelling and really make the show feel alive. Furthermore, the openings and endings were wonderful and also unique to this type of show. As a whole, it was a breath of fresh air and very enjoyable. The only negative that comes to mind is that a couple of scenes could have had a little better animation to make them pop and to make it a perfect 10/10. Nevertheless, the show was a real pleasure to watch and the sequel is highly awaited. A very worthy 9.7 out of 10 (the score is rounded up for submission as 9.7 was not an option). Detailed Version: The story was fresh and very intriguing. The plot lines for the mysteries were not predictable and everything made sense once the answer was explained. There are also some hints dropped that help viewers come to their own conclusions as to where the story may be headed in this season and what might occur in the following season. The cast of characters are really fleshed out and the character designs were very pretty and unique. There were a wide variety that all had their own reason for being a part of the story and were brought to life with amazing voice acting skills. There is also equal attention to both male and female characters both for story building and even the eye candy is only done in appropriate settings or to characters that would be more sexualised given their circumstances (e.g. the courtesans). Maomao very quickly became a favoured character due to her mischievous character and how she ends up teasing Jinshi. However, none of the other characters were left out (in terms of screen time) and many are fond of the side characters too. Nothing felt out of place. Relationships (both platonic and romantic) between characters felt very real. They felt as though they had been nurtured over time as though they were emulating relationships in real life. Unlike many anime titles, the romantic subtext was done in a way that was believable. The characters almost feel as though they have real heart and soul. The openings and endings were both visually and audibly beautiful and unique for this type of show. The same can be said for the art and music throughout the show. A minor negative is that a couple of scenes could have been given a little more love animation wise to really sell the scene. That's not to say the animation is bad at all as every frame was still beautifully done to match a scene. The art and music really know how to use the medium of anime to draw out the ambience and feelings that stick with you after each episode ends. It was such a pleasure to watch, as such, this anime is deserving of a very worthy 9.7 out of 10 (the score is rounded up to 10 for submission as 9.7 was not an option). The sequel is highly awaited for and due to come out next year.

The Apothecary Diaries introduces itself through a simple claim from Maomao, a self-proclaimed ordinary apothecary with no interest in palace politics, but then the story quickly reveals the irony behind that statement. The series unfolds as a historical mystery drama that blends palace intrigue, medical curiosity, and subtle social observation within the rigid hierarchy of an imperial court. The narrative draws its strength from investigation and intellectual deduction, following a protagonist whose sharp analytical mind exposes the hidden tensions within the royal inner palace. Years spent assisting an apothecary sharpen Maomao’s ability to recognize symptoms, identify toxins, and experiment with unusual remedies. This practical knowledge becomes the defining feature of her character, along with an unusual fascination with poisons that borders on academic obsession. Assigned to the inner court where imperial concubines reside, Maomao attempts to remain inconspicuous in order to avoid drawing attention from powerful figures. The palace operates under strict social hierarchies, where servants exist at the lowest level, causing silence and obedience the safest form of survival. However, Maomao’s careful anonymity becomes impossible when a series of mysterious illnesses begins affecting the emperor’s infant heirs. Rumors spread through the palace about curses and supernatural misfortune, yet Maomao quickly suspects a far more mundane explanation. Observing symptoms and environmental clues, she discreetly leaves anonymous warnings that eventually reveal the real cause. This act draws the attention of Jinshi, a high ranking palace official known for extraordinary beauty and ambiguous authority. Jinshi recognizes Maomao’s unusual intellect and assigns her a position closer to the center of palace affairs. From this point forward, Maomao becomes an unofficial problem solver, investigating strange incidents that others either fear or fail to understand. Each case presented throughout the story, reveals different layers of palace life, such as poisoned cosmetics, mysterious illnesses, hidden pregnancies, and suspicious deaths. All of them emerge as puzzles requiring careful observation. Maomao approaches these situations with a combination of scientific curiosity and pragmatic detachment, frequently focusing more on understanding the mechanism behind an event than the social drama surrounding it. The investigations gradually expose the complex political structure of the imperial court. Concubines compete for influence, servants navigate dangerous hierarchies, and officials conceal ambitions behind carefully controlled behavior. Through Maomao’s perspective, the palace becomes less a glamorous environment and more a delicate system where personal survival depends on awareness and subtle strategy. Jinshi’s role within the narrative adds another layer of intrigue. Although outwardly charismatic and playful, Jinshi maintains a carefully managed public persona that hides deeper political significance. Interactions between Jinshi and Maomao frequently blend humor with tension, as Jinshi’s fascination with Maomao contrasts with her consistent indifference toward romantic implications. Despite the strength of its investigative structure, the narrative also presents several limitations. One noticeable issue arises from the episodic format of many mysteries. Individual cases often resolve quickly once Maomao identifies the key clue, sometimes reducing the sense of long-term suspense. Even if these short investigations highlight Maomao’s intelligence, they occasionally limit the complexity of the conflicts involved. Another limitation involves the gradual pacing of the overarching political narrative. While hints about palace power structures and Jinshi’s true status appear throughout the story, major revelations develop slowly. For anyone expecting rapid plot escalation, the deliberate pacing may feel restrained. Character focus also centers heavily on Maomao, occasionally allowing other figures less explored and memorable. Several concubines and palace officials appear during investigations, yet receive limited development beyond their role within individual cases. Greater attention to these supporting perspectives might have deepened the political atmosphere surrounding the court. From a production standpoint, animation by TOHO Animation, together with OLM, emphasizes atmosphere and visual detail that reflect the historical setting. Character animation often highlights subtle expressions and restrained gestures, reinforcing Maomao’s observant personality and the careful etiquette of palace life. Background art plays a particularly important role in establishing the environment. Ornate palace corridors, layered architecture, and carefully arranged gardens create a visual sense of elegance while simultaneously suggesting isolation within the inner court. The contrast between beauty and underlying tension mirrors the narrative itself. Music complements the historical atmosphere with traditional instrumentation blended into modern orchestral arrangements. The soundtrack often supports investigative scenes without dominating, letting dialogue and observation to remain the primary drivers of tension. Ultimately, The Apothecary Diaries offers a narrative where curiosity and intellect replace conventional heroism. Through Maomao’s methodical investigations, the story reveals how knowledge of medicine, human behavior, and social hierarchy can uncover truths hidden beneath appearances. Although, the episodic structure occasionally limits character exploration and the broader political plot, the series remains compelling for its distinctive protagonist and its portrayal of mystery within a world governed by subtle power and observation. Anyway, keep in mind that no opinion is ever purely objective, and every perspective remains open to discussion. Even so, each viewpoint still holds its own value. If you happen to see things differently, simple mutual respect is more than enough. That same respect is the spirit behind this reflection as well. Wishing everyone a peaceful day ahead, and thank you for taking the time to read.

I end up with mixed feelings about this anime because it has its strong and weak moments. Its strong moments are WELL DONE and it’s mostly when we get to know the stories Maomao investigates (my faves being her parents love story and fouyou in episode 3) I love how these characters may have limited screen time but leaves us invested to them. I would even say that I cared more about these side characters compared to our main couple Maomao and Jinshi. I think these our the weak moments because the main characters seems one-note and barely have any interesting conflict I can get invested on. Yeah, their dynamic is cute and all but there’s nothing outside of that.

I went into The Apothecary Diaries expecting to drop it halfway. The premise didn’t seem like something I'd stick with long-term: I thought it was going to be cute-sy shoujo romance. Not really my kind of setup. But after watching all 24 episodes across both cours, I have to say, I was completely wrong. This turned out to be a really enjoyable mystery anime with one of the most unique female protagonists in recent memory. That being said, there’s a lot to unpack here, especially if you're like me and you despise forced romance or character designs that try to look cute and youthful just for appeal. The series follows Maomao, a brilliant and socially awkward apothecary with no filter and a deep obsession with poisons and medicine. She’s sharp, always curious, and honestly just a really fun character to follow. Most of the show is centered around her uncovering various medical or poisoning-related mysteries in the palace. If you enjoy episodic mystery solving with a historical Chinese aesthetic and some surprisingly strong comedy, the first cour will likely grab you immediately. It did for me. The first cour is where the show shines the most. The setting of the rear palace is vibrant, the supporting characters (especially the concubines) are interesting, and each episode feels focused and snappy. The mysteries feel like mini detective cases and often tie into the political web of the palace in subtle ways. Maomao's deadpan delivery and unpredictable behavior add a ton of charm and flavor to otherwise serious scenes. Importantly, there’s barely any romance early on, which kept things grounded in character work and plot instead of unnecessary pairings. But then we move into cour two, and that’s where the cracks start showing. The setting changes, Maomao's enviroment and characters we see changes. That shift alone causes a few problems: the mystery-of-the-week pacing slows down a lot, and the new cast of eunuchs and soldiers replacing the concubines just isn’t as interesting. Add to that a handful of mysteries that feel generic and forgettable, and you’ve got a significant dip in momentum. And then there’s the romance. God, the romance. Let me be very clear here: I hated the romantic elements in this show with a passion. Not because “ew romance”, I love romance in anime when it’s well-earned and feels natural. But this one? Absolutely not. Maomao and Jinshi do have a lot of chemistry together, but that just doesn't work here. Maomao’s design is just horrible for a romance. She looks like a 10-year-old. She’s 18, sure, but that doesn’t fix anything. It’s not about age for me. It’s about how she’s portrayed visually and how uncomfortable it feels whenever the show tries to push some romantic tension between them or portray Maomao as visually appealing. Thankfully, despite my worst fears, the romance doesn’t dominate the second half like I thought it would. It takes a backseat for most of cour two, and what you're left with instead is a long, slow burn that suddenly explodes into a really compelling final act. Everything from the earlier, slower episodes comes together in one big conspiracy arc, and it pays off really well. One of the biggest surprises of the season is how much depth was given to characters you don’t expect. Lakan, for example, starts as this bizarre, over-the-top villain figure, but by the end, he’s given a heart-wrenching backstory that completely changes how you see him. His final scenes were genuinely emotional, and I didn’t expect this show to hit me like that. There’s also a great final note the show ends on. New mysteries on the horizon and an open-ended yet satisfying conclusion. I’m definitely interested in a Season 2 if it stays true to what worked here. So, if you’re looking for a strong, mystery-driven anime with a unique female lead, sharp writing, and a historical palace setting, The Apothecary Diaries is worth checking out. Just be warned that the second half slows down, and if you’re allergic to poorly-executed romance with weird age gap vibes or loli-ish designs, parts of this show might piss you off. Still, even with all my issues, I had a great time with it and found myself fully hooked again by the end.

This is a very solid show that gives me strong vibes similar to Frieren, especially at the start of season 1. The story occurs in a realistic world where bad things happen all the time, but none of the characters seem that perturbed by it. The protagonist is captured and sold off as a slave in the first episode, and her reaction is more of an "ugh what a bother" rather than falling into a huge depression. The show is relatively upbeat, although it does become a bit darker towards the end of S1 as the mysteries unfold. The mysteries themselves are quite well handled. There's several OK-to-good single-episode mysteries that have decent foreshadowing without giving away too much. Then there's the good-to-great meta mysteries that stretch out over the course of several episodes or even entire seasons. These are particularly well done and put the smaller mysteries into context of large plot points. Like Frieren, this show has a lot of goofy moments, e.g. when the protagonist becomes manic at the sight of potion ingredients or eating poison or whatever. These are pretty cheesy, although they're brief enough that they never overstayed their welcome in ways that many other anime fall into. I generally don't really enjoy these types of things that much, but I didn't mind them in this show since they're well-handled. One aspect that I didn't enjoy is the romance between the protagonist and the lead supporting character, the purple haired eunuch. This is very much something tailored towards women, and I can viscerally feel that I'm not the target audience here. It's very reminiscent of Twilight or 50 Shades of Gray, where the buff, rich, successful man who is widely beloved by women is only interested in the plain-looking female protagonist. She's not even that interested in him that much, and this just drives him to be even *more* obsessive over her. This preteen romance drama is weird and silly and I just wish it would go away. I imagine this is symmetrical to how women feel when anime has fanservice that's targeted towards heterosexual men. This show is roughly equal parts 1) mystery, 2) characters acting goofy, and 3) romance. These comprise the majority of the runtime, and then 4) the broader character drama, gets added on top towards the end. I really enjoyed 1 and 4, I was fine with 2, and I didn't like 3. Overall, it's a very decent show.

Mao mao is really cute. That's about it btw. The story is really clever, side characters are unique and interesting (except the emperor). Jinshi is good, he's the mr. perfect of this anime. Gyokuyou is good & realistic. Lifa was a bitch, but she good now. A lot of good things are happening in this anime. I really like how the character design in both manga and anime really focuses on expressing Mao mao expressions. She's much more vivid than other character that I can think of. She's also cute. Also did I mention that she have passions, unlike other female lead that mostly are there to fawn over the male? The part why this story is so good is that they're teasing us the romance but it'll never come. The author keeps milking the romance but it won't happen. It's kinda like kaguya and like kaguya, they're doing it in a good way. Because both the MCs have identities / life outside of each other Just watch it

7/10 ~ Talking the anime lol So I did enjoy this show that I binged in 1 tattoo session. This was the perfect kinda show to watch as it was almost entirely talking and the story for the most part was fairly easy to follow. Funny tidbit about when I was watching this, several people came over to see the work being done to see me just zoned out watching this. And several of the people asked me if this was anything like "Solo Leveling" or "seven deadly sins", it was really hard to keep a straight face when I told them "yes" lmfao. Pros: - first 1/2 or so of the show is extremely good and hooks you in - the MC despite being a know it all is a very likeable character --I enjoyed most of the supporting cast - the story taking place in Ancient China is always a good setting, cant wait for more Kingdom! - English dub was good - I got waay too invested in all the dumb stories for the first 1/2 Cons: - not sure if its translations, or they expect you to have an understanding of Ancient China/ Chinese general culture but alot of the terms and what conspired were very confusing... - The MC being a "Mary Sue" gets old, shes like 17 with WAAAAY too much knowledge - I understand that the sex district is just one of the main settings but whollyboobs, that was distracting in a 'hard to take you seriously' kinda way - sherlock type mysteries were very poorly done - I enjoyed the light romances but I can see them being to light for most people - music score was pretty meh - pacing in the 2nd half was so bad This show had an extremely good start with the first 10 or so episodes, until it quickly becomes "mystery of the week" which was an extreme low of the show as it was executed pretty poorly imo. Luckily it does all kinda come together as a mini reward for getting to the end of the season. Which is always satisfying when you feel "paid off" for making it through something. Tho if I wasn't literally confided to a table with nothing else downloaded on my tablet I probably would have not continued when it hit that low low point. I am very shocked how well rated this show is, and similar to Frieren I am so confused how the general public finds these really niche shows to be legendary. I would only recommend this to people who are fine with shows about low tier political intrigue, romance and bullshit science fiction mixed in, bit too much of "dont worry about it bro" and "trust me" going on with this one lol, but I enjoyed it well enough. 7/10 is actually quite high of a rating for me as my average rating is right on the mark of 5/10, This is also quite hard for me to seriously recommend to anyone that I know as it doesn't do the romance thing well enough, and its too romancy for the Shonen crowd.
