Maou 2099 was probably the second biggest surprise of the season for me after Mecha-ude. I’d seen the books around in stores for the last couple of years and kept passing on it before the anime got announced. I decided to hold off and wait for the anime and I’m glad I did because wow. This was great. I really can’t describe the sort of feeling this show evoked in me, I can only compare it some other recent experiences like Cyberpunk 2077. ID:invaded and No Guns Life from a few years ago. The futuristic setting, the characters, the interesting world-building and mechanics, this was a blast to watch every week and I’m going to miss it. The shortest way I’d describe Maou 2099 is Hatamou, but good. Much better story, more action, more interesting characters, better lead, but you still have a demon lord who’s teleported to earth. Combine that with the cyberpunk setting and you got something special. What’s cool is that in this universe, earth and the original fantasy world have merged, so you aspects of fantasy mixed with more sci-fi stuff. Scientific devices control the output of magic similar to Mahouka, making it accessible for everyone, which means the superiority that the demon lord enjoyed in his original world doesn’t exist anymore. I thought it was very cool to see Veltol have to adjust from being the apex predator of his world to being just another loser in ours. They actually addressed this in a mature way too rather than just playing it up for laughs. There’s a proper mental and social adjustment process that we see him go through thanks in large part to best girl Machina. While Veltol finding his way in this new world is great, what I loved most about this show is the chemistry the trio have. Takahashi, Machina and Veltol are such a good team. It has some vibes of Maou Gakuin, but Veltol has way more personality than Anos, and actually acts like a normal person for the most part. I’m a huge sucker for characters being loyal for extended periods of time and seeing Machina’s backstory and all she went through in the centuries between Veltol’s “demise” and his awakening in this new world was beautiful. I think everyone should be rewarded for their efforts and I’m really pleased with what the author did for her in the second half. They ended up being one of my fave ships of the season. There’s a real homey/comfy vibe to this story, you just have to watch it to understand what I’m talking about. I think Maou 2099’s success is due in large part to JC staff only adapting two books in a whole season. It really feels like all the story beats got developed well, pacing was perfect. I couldn’t detect any rushed eps or anything dragging on. Having recently ordered the books while waiting on the season to finish before starting them, just from the titles I can tell each volume handles its own mini arc which makes adapting it a lot easier. This was definitely one of the better looking JC staff productions. Fights looked great, character designs are very accurate to the LN and the soundtrack was really cool. Not to mention having the best ED of the season! Maou 2099 was an amazing watch to me personally. I think Veltol learning to live again and finding new purpose was a beautiful storyline, the antagonist in the first arc was compelling, the romance is subtle but sweet and it’s a cool ass cyberpunk world. Can’t ask for much more. On to the books we go Maou 2099 gets 9 familias out of 10.

While having a decently original take on the whole demon lord trope, its anime adaptation decided to waste most of its budgets on slow and pointless scenes to pad out the runtime instead of properly using its limited screen time. Every episode has about 5 to 10 minutes of well paced content while the rest is generally padding that makes you think "why did they have to take so long to show that?" and the answer will go unanswered by any answers other than budget related ones. It's a real shame they wasted such potential like this and because of it I do not expect this series will ever get a season 2, destined to remain limited into the light novel format until its end. 5/10

Demon Lord 2099 or The Lord Of Immortals Blooming in The Abyss F.E. 2099 There was a short blooming of this show, before it fell into the Abyss. It takes a very eccentric mind, to try and make the marriage between futuristic sci-fi elements and medieval Fantasy. It takes an even more wisdom to consummate these elements intimately into a truly compelling piece with a disciplined narrative. Unfortunately we have only the former with this one… That’s not all, we have all these potentially exciting as well as enticing elements, a plethora of settings that make your mouth water, characters, types and designs that could fill several encyclopedias. Such a vast horizon but at some point the writer seems it acceptable to place us into our friendly neighbourhood school building. Ah the esteemed high-school building, where the story of all great Fantasy go to die. Do you remember the school in Eminence in the shadow? Yeah I do! It was the worst part. How about in Mushoku Tensei? Yeah that too! It tanked the second season cour 1. This setting is terrible for these shows because it’s the exact place we wanted to escape from when we started watching this show. It's especially not needed when we're dealing with adults. This MC... We hoped for our salvation with another Anos, another Alucard, another Ainz; the AAA of 'DEMON LORD. We should have gotten the hint when his name didn’t start with A but with the pussy letter V. The experience is supposed to be centred around him, his goals, his journey, his desires. But in typical fashion the writer lacks courage, lacks the ability to empathize with the mind of a true King of the Abyss. His own development seems like a regression, his impact on the story; a means to an end for others. It’s apparent he’s been banned from ever being allowed to be cool or to have ‘aura’ as the youngings say it today. Such a shame, he doesn’t show any wickedness any callous, reckless, cruel, selfish or even ruthless behaviour. Why then is he a ‘Demon Lord’, they waste this premise criminally. The side characters, boring, disappointing and at their worst a total nuisance. Are they female? They won’t die, Are they a man? They’re already dead whether spiritually, or physically. If they’re a female they’re being “controlled” or they’re allowed to be an irritant, If they’re a man conversely, an evil tyrant or fool. Have you ever cringed at dialogue? Stupid question right? You are truly in for a generational ‘try not to cringe challenge here’. One of these annoying characters will downright banish any attempt to take this show seriously. I’m not actually sure why this female is here, it frankly seems like they were trying to kill the spark in every prospective blossoming of ambiance this show had left. Too many women, not enough grit and darkness. Making light of everything, the tension just disappears. Time and time again they end up saving the female antagonist rather than perishing them to perdition. All that does is nullify the kind of powerful emotion these fighting scenes are suppose to cultivate. The plot was perhaps the most displeasing. The entire first Arc should have been stretched into the 12-13 episodes. It robbed the main duo of their shine, and cheapened the general overarching conflict of the series. A potent, resourceful but familiar villain beaten by the pen, not the MC. It was also, again as is common with shows of this nature, just too easy. One of the most powerful and respected beings, stripped of his power in a new age. Only for it to be resolved in the most lackadaisical and anti-climactic manner. A chance to be humbled to edify the narrative, to see the world in a new light. Turned into comical debasement to no greater effect. It may be a personal thing, but I dislike these struggles, journeys and suffering being degraded for humor or for a seemingly witty present day reference. The methods employed here will surprise you, but it’s not a delightful slice of cake but rather an old tin-can of beans. The second arc? An utter waste of time, shouldn’t have existed. It takes us further away from the initial objectives, the mission of the reincarnation is almost forgotten. Finale? Poor.. This one you feel nothing, an episode that encapsulates the efforts of this show. What’s strange is that I haven’t heard this show mentioned once in any discourse despite such rapturous applause and wide critical acclaim. My statement made after almost a year after it’s conclusion, for all the avenues ventured none of it manages to stick because it wasn’t taken very seriously. The greatest finales of this kind of genre I give to Season 2 cour 1(E12) of Tensura and Season 1 Episode 20(Advent of the Demon) of Eminence in the Shadow. These finales just multiply the positive emotion shown throughout the season, conclude matters in a way that is satisfying, gratifying and gives you hope for more. They put clearly on a display the compounding events and the resultant ‘crespuscolo’ is the icing on the cake. Back to this show.. As for the general production quite nice actually, I can’t point you any spectacular moments but there’s not much left to want, except a lack of what this kind of work could have been used to service better. The ED was outstanding for me, the OP not so much. I’d say there’s nothing to complain about here. The soundtrack by Tatsuya Kato, is quite pleasant to listen to when you're not watching this show, a job well done on his part. Final Rankings Animation 8 Soundtrack 8 Plot 4 Character 4 Enjoyment 3 27/50 – 5.4/10 – 5/10 – Looks great on the outside, but it’s a mud cake.. I took a 3 week-break between episode 7 and episode 12 to pure disappointment at the shift in core narrative, utterly unacceptable as a binging experience. Any interest in the show was gone. In the end, This has some dazzling moments, it may entice your into it's den of delusions initially but once you're inside it's realm, there's an empty hall. Hope this helps.

A solid 9/10. I want to say this confidently that i enjoy and Maou 2099 is the most underrated, low exposures and low anticipation Anime of this season! I’ll break it down. Like the review before me had said, quote “Maou 2099 is a solid show with a familiar setup: the demon lord is defeated by the hero, vows to return, and gets resurrected in the distant future.” Why did i score a 9/10 for a premise that similar to some of few anime that has aired in recent years? Because it has different type of approach to the story from the begining towards the end. “Wait isn’t it like Maou gakuin that people didn’t believe that hes the actual demon lord and ends with him teaming up with the Hero like the other series?” Yes, it is indeed a familiar setup that many must have been judge in the first few episodes. But, have you ever even watch or imagine a cyberpunk city that on a constant lifeline by making the demon lord’s servant as fire woods? maybe imagine, but definitely haven’t watched. So, in conclusion its a fresh twist on a plot that has a familiar set up that makes it reasonably not that predictable. The twist of this story is what makes it different and fresh. Its not as simple as any other similar set up has done. The MC is getting power because of the subscriber of his streaming account? thats modern af LOL Decent character writing and development, i can’t really say much about the development but the character writing and design is already pretty good for my standard. Because of the straight forwardness of both the character personality and backgroud. Hey atleast we got a Maou that become a streamer and play soulsborne, isn’t that already some funky character writing? lol. The only noticeable character that being developed is Hijiki… i mean Hizuki, the main point of the 2nd Arc of this series adaptation. Btw, i didn’t rate this anime with an “underrated scoring”. I reviewed this anime as a solid produced anime. Why? because Aniplex and Kadokawa made this. Thus the 9/10 is a honest upcoming anticipated score and it does fit my standards. Aniplex and Kadokawa as always, never fails to bring smooth edge and light fineline type of adaptation. This is what Kadokawa and Aniplex type of projects usually are, so if you are searching for similar art style you should check more of their works! I genuinely hope theres a season 2 of this anime and if it did get a 2nd season. I hope this anime is much more exposed to create anticipation for it to air. So there would be more budget and work done toward this anime. I think it would be an even better anime if theres more enthusiasm! Fyi, how did i even find this anime? Because i saw a clip on idk where, a clip of towa-sama-san stream clip appears on this anime. I was watching this anime only to confirm and see if tw-sama-san appearance is real or not. And then i stay because of Veltol resemble picture perfect zura and machina is just a cute humanoid immortal female elizabeth from gintama. And finally i stay because i enjoyed the anime.

This is one of the most underrated shows I've watched this season and has easily become a favorite. Easily one of my favourites that far exceeded my expectations. People compare this to the devil as a part timer which is honestly an insult to this series. Compared to that, this show captures a unique twist to the classic troupe of demonlord and executes it in a way that was extremely fun to watch. The start somewhat felt slow but it really picked up and felt genuinely enjoyable to look forward to each week. The core characters are really great and would recommend it to others. Some of the comedy scenes were actually funny (amazing feat) and the whole 2099 was incorporated into the series extremely well. The animation was really good for show this size and didn't hinder me from enjoying this series. Minimum 8/10 great watch

Demon Lord 2099 — Psycho-Pass meets Hataraku! Maou-sama, and it's legitimately good, interesting even. I have a legitimate question to discuss here: why don't people take the less-traveled road and do something that's worth the interest to talk about? This has been my gripe with consuming AniManga within the post-COVID era (in which series' delays (or even hiatuses) are STILL the norm): the number of authors writing stuff of interest has been nothing more than copy-pasting aesthetics of one another; you can't help but see predictability at every corner. This is especially so if the series is marketed in the Isekai genre, because good shows are far and few in between, and for the case of one show in particular, it is so interesting that I just can't help but be mesmerized at how it's being done here. And that, my friends, is novelist Daigo Murasaki's Maou 2099 a.k.a Demon Lord 2099, the newest and freshest take on the reverse Isekai trope to come out of the anime spectrum. Think of your usual fantasy good vs. evil trope, but take the premise up a notch by bringing the traditional to the modern. This is the setting of the magical world of Alneath, where the battle of justice over evildom takes precedent through its Hero Gram defeating the villainous Demon Lord Veltol Velvet Velsvalt. But fast forward 500 years, with the "Fantasion" catastrophe merging the old fantasy world with the new modern industrial Earth to bring about change that's all for the better, it becomes a place where fantasy meets sci-fi cyberpunk, magic meets engineering, and wars are quelled to make way for peace between the old Alneath and the new Earth. With the help of a revival from a close friend, Veltol now finds himself being the same villainous Demon Lord but in a place where everything is foreign to him and must now navigate what to do to achieve what he's been called to do: achieve world domination...in the year 2099. On paper, I think that Daigo Murasaki coming up with this concept is pure genius to sideswipe the audience about the usual Demon Lord and fantasy tropes to give a different take on the matter, an "edgy" one if you will (that thankfully doesn't go full-on edge). This may be something that has been attempted before in different mediums, but as is for the AniManga industry, this is brand new and is an area never yet experimented with, so this already does hold more interest and should have your time investment well worth it (which it did for me), even though sometimes it falls back to standard tropes that thankfully don't take the immersiveness out of the entire series. For once, I truly vibe with a Demon Lord of Veltol's size. Veltol Velvet Velsvalt's character is so similar to Overlord's Ainz Ooal Gown, where he exercises his duty according to the situations and circumstances, knowing when and how to make the right calls (even though that puts his ego on the front out of his usual Lord personality), plus with his powers unexperimented in the new modern space and acknowledging that he has work to do not being the OP in the house, that IS the mark of great character writing to know that Veltol is not just all bark and bite as a Demon Lord who survived countless centuries of experience. Even the hero Gram also makes it into the modern world, but he's a disheveled person of his former self, being in a world where there's no need for heroes, just lazing with his Excalibur (well, it's not exactly called that) sword and passing every day with bats of eyes from citizens of the cyberpunk city (though he soon finds purpose of being one so as not to wane his experience from defeating Veltol all those years ago). As expected, the one who revived him, Machina Soleige, one of the Six Dark Peers of Veltol's trusted followers, gets him back on track within the new world and its developments to do the same he's always been... and also fall in love with him all the same? Yes, that's what you get for being the Demon Lord's most loyal follower, but also one of the remaining surviving ones due to the infamy of their own brethren, now being the tour de force of the industrial age: Marcus, leading a company on his own that fuels the city he's leading to extreme lengths of modernization through technology for the masses with a heinous plan that's just as ambitious as Veltol's did during their time. Also, I don't know why, but his secretary Kinohara just loves to splice some Engrish over normal Japanese dialogue just to show her range and boost her confidence that way, that's so weird. But the one good fact is that Machina's friend is the Super Girl Hacker Takahashi, who is born after the Fantasion, and despite being the typical high-school-looking girl as she is, she's quite the talent for her aether hacking that provides a way for Veltol in rather sticky situations. From the world-building to the characters, everything just feels fresh to the point that despite its predictability, there is a perchance of twists that gives the series some substance, and it really shows. Thus, it answers the question of what if authors were able to experiment with genres that don't quite fit together, but they do for some reason, and they do it smartly. It's safe to say that within the faults of J.C.Staff being chosen to do multiple projects within a single season, some have faltered (like DanMachi's remainder for Season 5), brutally survived from poor production (like Yarinaoshi Reijou wa Ryuutei Heika wo Kouryakuchuu a.k.a The Do-Over Damsel Conquers The Dragon Emperor), are "special" in their own ways (like Mahoutsukai ni Narenakatta Onnanoko no Hanashi. a.k.a The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't Be Magicians), and the most obvious case, have the budget to do so. The 7th of 9 shows for the Summer/Fall 2024 season, and clearly the best-budgeted series of the lot (thanks to the sweet, sweet Aniplex BIG bags money), the studio really has a lot of space to work on delivering scenes that truly matter. For the most part, the anime delivered, albeit with the typical studio production sacrifices that Demi-chan wa Kataritai a.k.a Interviews With Monster Girls director Ryo Ando and his staff team have to make, especially for the director that hasn't had a major directorial work since the Winter 2017 show, only working as both storyboarder and episode director for shows in and out. To say that this is a return to form for Ryo Ando would be a pipedream; it's clear that he's still got it despite being out of the chair for years, and it would be a gross understatement to say that he's still working on it, which I would be down to see what he does next. The OST is good, as expected from Dr. Stone music composer Tatsuya Kato, which gives a level of impressions to bring the audience into the cyberpunk aesthetic of the show, which, this being under his wheelhouse, is just great to experience. I'll admit that I was in the wrong to see both Shiyui's OP and sekai's ED as decent songs, but they proved me wrong the more I listen to them, and it's just so perfect for a show like this, with great visuals as a backup to hammer in the sci-fi element. Despite the anime only covering 2 out of the 5 LN volumes present (since the series is brand new that started in January 2021), Maou 2099 a.k.a Demon Lord 2099 has EVERY right to excel with its potential, and I believe that we're just only getting started to see what the series could achieve with so much more. If this show does get a Season 2, I'll be down regardless, but for the anime as it is now, it's honestly one of the best hidden gem shows of the Fall 2024 season that, while it garners the audience numbers (on MAL), more people should give this a chance, because it deserves every bit of attention for being innovative at the very least.

-Maou 2099 is an anime that shines in some aspects, particularly its visual style and character design, but stumbles with an underdeveloped narrative and a sound department that doesn't quite stand out. Excellent! A return to form of classic anime! Great animation, a refreshingly unique plot, and callbacks to anime of similar aesthetics make me question how it's possible that this show is not more popular than it is. It's like Bright meets Ghost in the Shell with a heaping scoop of Blade runner with a bit of The Witcher's "Conjunction of Spheres" thrown in for good measure. Furthermore, if you pay attention in the first few episodes, there are several direct nods to GitS in the dialogue. While there is comedy, it's not goofy, trope-ridden, or "dad humor" (though being a dad myself I can certainly appreciate dad humor). There is betrayal, regret, mysterious people/groups moving behind the scenes for unknown reasons, begrudging respect, and even a bit of love and friendship sprinkled here and there to keep it from being total grimdark fantasy. The MC isn't afflicted with the modern trope of the goofy or misunderstood "Demon Lord" and has a believable backstory and personality, the Hero is exactly who you'd expect such a person to be given his particular stressful circumstances and avoids both the "complete benevolent idealist" and more recent "drunk on power" tropes associated with many heroes, and the side characters all have well fleshed out backstories and personalities and don't all fit neatly into various "-dere" archetypes like many forgettable side characters in modern anime; they're genuine personalities who have different moods that affect their character. The excellent writing, detailed plot, lived in world, stellar animation, imaginative mildly retro character design, and overall aesthetic combine to elicit a feeling of nostalgia for some of us older folks who grew up watching anime in the 80's and 90's, but it's still fresh enough to compete with many of the best modern anime. My only complaints can be easily explained by the time/content restraints of being limited by the standard 12 episode season format when it might have flowed a bit more smoothly as a 14 or 15 episode season, but maybe that's just me wishing there was more. 10/10 for me and I can't wait for a Season 2 should it ever come! And if it doesn't? Well, that's just a sad reminder that good things are not always popular things.

A very interesting story very well-told, for the most part. I liked how concise it was but I also see the benefit they could have from a longer season like other reviewers have wanted. For example, sometimes characters explain their attacks/power/mana in a way that halts combat scenes, which I don't hate in theory, but it comes across as very inorganic here. I think being able to control the pacing across more episodes would have helped this. Still very enjoyable and I hope it has more seasons! There are many moments that feel like cliche but the English VAs deliver them in ways that keep them funny or effectively teach you more about the characters. I've never watched an anime with up-to-date use of slang and modern media culture, and Maou 2099 incorporates it in a way that doesn't derail or take over the story. The ways in which this demon lord has to adapt to a new world that is so technologically advanced and fairly similar to modern dominant cultures actually comes across as very realistic. I hope to see more of this story in the future to learn about how more of the world works. The main character, specifically, breaks from many potential faults his writing could have had. While he is exceedingly powerful in certain ways, he is not perfect and we can clearly see places in which he falls short, which help place him among the supporting characters. As a viewer, you understand why he is among them and how he cannot fix every problem he has on his own. I also appreciate that there are occasional themes of nudity but they overall are not excessively voyeuristic or meant to demean women in these scenes.

Maou 2099 is a combination of two of my favorite things, O.P demon lord MCs and cyberpunk theming and aesthetics. It has a very unique fantasy-cyberpunk fusion which you don't usually see, therefore it is quite a refreshing anime to watch, thanks to not only amazing voice-acting and amination, but also sound design and story. The Story: As this will be a spoiler-free review, I won't dive into too much of the lore and story of Maou 2099. However, I must tell you that the story-telling and the pacing of the story are all appreciable in this era of anime. I feel like there is solid worldbuilding of the setting and themes of this anime and strong and impactful character backstories that make their actions so much funnier and impactful. For the actual story it is nothing too new for anime, as it revolves around a long-dead demon lord that arises in an unfamiliar cyberpunk city with no idea about the what, the when and the why this is all happening. However, he eventually is greeted by a familiar face and with them learn about the new world he has arisen in and learns to survive without his demon kingdom. In addition, the story can be pretty serious and thrilling which is fantastic to keep you hooked an engaged. The Characters: All the characters in anime are perfect as they are all both funny, serious and emotional at the appropriate times. Our main demon lord Veltol is a perfect M.C for this story and setting, and for avid anime watchers can ensure you that you will be entertained by his endeavors in his new world. But, as always there is a beautiful and cute female M.C in Machina if that's your cup of tea. There are also many others such as the the best hacker in 2099 Takahashi and also the lost hero out of time Gram. Watch Maou 2099 and tell me which character your favourite is, I'm sure you'll have one. (P.s mines Veltol, you can't not love him). The Animation: This is produced by J.C staff studio, so already you know that the animation is gonna be pretty good compared to some other slop on the market these days. I will not say that the animation is super crazy like solo leveling or Jujutsu Kaisen, but for a season anime that appeared out of nowhere, its pretty great. Not only are the normal scenes well animated, but the fights are astonishing with flashy colours and impactful gradients. Also the animation stays consistently goof throughout the season which is a god send these days. The Audio: The OP and ED are both really good. The OP by Siyui is especially dope, as it perfectly fits the story and aesthetics of the show. The voice acting both Japanese and English are really good and perfectly suits each character to a tea. The OST I feel is also fine for this show, nothing too over the top just yeah for this show. So yeah here are the main topics I feel people will think of when deciding to watch this anime. Remember this is all just my opinion and I just love this show, so I may be a bit biased in my review. But if you watch it I feel like you'll understand my bias hehe. However, if you don't vibe with this show, that fair I can understand that. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoy Maou 2099 and have a good day :)

a brisk show that manages to fit in two complete and reasonably satisfying story arcs into one season. the cast is enjoyable, and they have the common sense to only introduce as many characters as is needed. characters don't have artificial motivations and act as they should given what we learn about them. its a bit generic and could have slowed down for the first story arc, but having a modern show with no franchise dependency be full of a sufficient amount of action and humor is a great thing. the basic features, the voice acting, characters, and animation are all above average, but the setting is very above average, functionally its the same concept as shadowrun, with less dragons, meaning its great, with less dragons. everything runs on magic, but in a way that is believably cyberpunk. really you cant go wrong watching this show.

“Demon Lord 2099” is what happens when you start playing “Shadowrun” with a competent Gamemaster and half way through someone who never played RPG takes his place. This show is divided into two specific arcs. The first one is… acceptable. Its main flaws being that it is rushed and a waste of potential for an amazing philosophical conflict between the demon lord and the hero. The second one is absolute garbage with no story, only plot. Before we start I would like to explain something. I will be talking about “plot” and “story”. Many people use those terms interchangeably. I’m not one of those people, so to make sure everyone is on the same page… I use the definitions for “plot” and “story” as Lisa Cron describes them: “What happens in the story is the PLOT, the surface events.” “STORY is about how the things that happen affect someone in pursuit of a difficult goal, and how that person changes internally as a result”. For all their flaws the first 7 episodes are actually interesting. They build a world that Rob Boyle, Robert N. Charrette and Paul Hume wouldn't scoff at. Well… maybe they actually had some problem with it. For starters it is a bit sterile and only shows a very clean version of dystopian violence and brutality. Despite wanting to be a semi-dystopia it shows that a lot of people, even in poverty (like our MC - Veltol and his right hand - Machina) can still live a minimal but acceptable life. I guess they didn’t want to go over a PG13 rating. I guess it still works for the type of show this is, but I’m still counting that as a mist opportunity to create something truly great. If I had to name the world that is created I would probably call it “Shadowrun Light”, but for the type of story those 7 episodes present it work adequate. It’s dark-ish, gritty and at times properly accents the difference in classes. It has some creative ways of integrating magic and technology but if you ever read anything in the Shadowrun universe you won’t find anything new apart from the furnace. Mind You, to be an enjoyable show, it doesn’t have to have new and original ideas, it’s all in their execution. And those 7 episodes do have enjoyable and mostly competent execution. Now, the plot and story that is present in that world are another bests. The story is about a reincarnated demon lord and his journey to regain his power, status and rule the world. Yeah… the last part is so cliche I’m not even gonna entertain it. That said, that is still a goal and the MC is actually doing something to achieve it and not just goes with the shit flow that happens (like most anime nowadays). Those 7 episodes even end with him having an almost proper revelation about himself and his past defeat by the hand of the hero. It’s not anything groundbreaking but I would call it solid. The plot is… well, it’s a mixed bag. There are some really good ideas situated right next to fillers that are there only to pad out the runtime. That said, the fact that the OP MC at the start isn’t worth much, is prideful, full of himself and gets his ass handed to him by the main antagonist of the first act is good. It would be better if in the prologue we could see how powerful he was and how that power scales to everyone around him, but that would require the writer to think of a logical way that the hero defeated him in the first place, and that plot point is absolutely nonsensical in the first place. If his power is related to people who "believe" (I’m gonna use that loosely) in him, as in know that he exists (at least that the conclusion I got from what’s later shown and told), and the whole damn world knows about him, then there is no real reason for him to lose to the hero. On top of the fact that the whole immortality shtick isn’t properly explained. In the very first scene we see an immortal lose his head and about ⅓ of his torso and just… shrug it off. So why did the demon lord, who is implied to be more powerful, die by the hero’s hand? I need answers to that, because that one point destroys the view about the MCs power. A lover rank immortal is able to walk off “lethal” damage and the most powerful immortal can’t (and he’s supposed to be in his prime mind You)? I hope the source material has an explanation for that, and that the studio that adapted it just didn’t give a damn, otherwise this whole setup just positioned the author as incompetent for me. As for the rest of the plot of the first act it has some amazing moments that are destroyed and never followed. The main is the moment the Demon Lord asks the Hero for help. It starts well. The Hero is rightfully pissed at the MC for what he did 500 years ago and has some reservations about helping. He ultimately does because this would be net positive for the whole city. That’s actually not bad. But then it fumbles hard. In the next scene they start to bicker like good old friends. It is far too early for this kind of relationship between them. Now it’s the moment for them to have their philosophies challenged by the other side. Now they should try and position themselves on a higher moral standing than the other side. The fact that it’s never stated who started the war or what was the reason for it gives the writer a lot of space to create the core driving forces for both characters. But we don’t get any such thing. All we get is that the hero does what he does because he’s a hero and the demon lord wants to rule the world to bring peace. Eff off with that. That’s the most basic garbage anyone could think of. We could have, and should have, a proper battle of morality and philosophy. Instead we get the equivalent of white bread. And not even the good one, the american shit that pretends to be bread. At least we get a somewhat satisfying ending to the BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy). Shame it required the MC to pull out a trump card out of his ass without any proper setup but I’ll take what I can get. On top of that, the MC and his right hand woman do confess their feelings for each other, something I did not expect, so I call it net gain. Now for the last 5 episodes… Yeah. Skip them. If the season ended after the first arc I would have been happy and give a higher score. But we do get 5 episodes of utter garbage so let’s talk about it. If You ever watched “The Irregular at Magic High School” or “The Misfit of Demon King Academy” You don’t have to watch this part. It’s just copy and pasted, “special” highschool nonsense. There isn’t one thing that is original in this arc. Everything is predictable, flat and because of the type of show this is, there are no stakes, no one dies and everyone has a happy ending. Utter garbage. Why do writers copy high school shit from the worst possible sources? Neither Misfit or Irregular are good shows. They are just self jerk fests. If You want to copy a highschool motif do it the way “Soul Eater” or at least “Myriad Colors Phantom World” did it. Those at least have interesting plot points to them and integrate most characters into most plot points. That’s another thing this show has in common with most anime of the last decade and more. The supporting cast is useless. Yes, they do have scenes in the beginning where they are competent and needed but the longer the show goes on, the more useless they become. To the point that the last 5 episodes barely show the supporting cast doing anything but being background noise. They are not needed at all. Barely anything would change if they weren’t around so why keep them? This is a sci-fi magic world and one of the support cast members is a damn magic hacker. In this type of world she should be one of the most prominent actors. Especially that the MC is still learning about magic technology. But no, in the last 5 episodes she does absolutely nothing except eat and play video games. What a waste. She had her moments in the first arc but for some reason the writer decided to change her from a competent asset to just background. Why create a pretty solid charac…

The anime is solid mid. You surely will not remember much about it later nor will you think it was really great but it is enjoyable and just good enough to make you watch the next episode. It is watchable. The animation is pretty good and it really is the best thing the anime has. Fight scenes are decent. The plot is decent. Its pretty generic, the fallen demon lord wakes up in the future and tries to reclaim his power. Thats about it. It is not like that certain demon lord anime where the demon lord gets reincarnated and just tries to make a life where he cannot do anything more. He is cool, he really is the lord and he has some ambitions to follow. There is some action but that is not the main point. Pacing is good. It is neither rushed nor so slow to bore you. 6/10.

This is probably the best 7/10 anime I’ve watched. Not because it barely missed being rounded up to an 8 with a 7.49, but because it did many things very well, but somehow remained a solid 7/10. The anime has great visuals, a strong soundtrack, good world-building, a decent plot, and likeable characters. The MC isn’t overpowered, but his intelligence, wisdom, and experience shine as he quickly—yet realistically—adapts to the cyberpunk setting. Unlike traditional "demon lord fantasies," he doesn’t rise to power through nepotism or sheer strength alone but by using his abilities strategically. This would make it seem like the anime deserves an 8 or even 9/10, but it falls short in one key area: enjoyment. Despite a well-paced story, the anime feels slow and sometimes even dull—even at 1.25x speed. The art style is detailed and beautiful, but the combat animations are underwhelming, overall making the show feel more like a fantasy slice-of-life, which I doubt was the intention.

This wasn't just your average stereotypical normal everyday Deamon Lord Anime you will find everyday! This was different! Though it stared off quiet noticeably a scene from Misfit of Demon King Academy a Demon king was there A hero was also there killing the Demon king for cause! Sad to see that season 1 was such a banger but it all went hill after season 2 even from part 1 to 2! But we are not here to talk about that anime, I am just giving an example! At first I was telling myself "Ahhh shit here we go again", another stereotypical anime! But after some episodes, Verily, I was much enthralled! Coming from a guy who have watched a bunch of animes! This anime intrigued me the most because of how Velvet Velsvalt, Veltol the Demon Lord accepted the Morden life how today's society operates and how to live a life in 2099 era of standards I assum! How he come to a acceptance that the old him was not going to be applied in today's era! Of course we can also go to Total world Dominance logic he could have just destroyed everything and sustain his old rules his old morals but He accepted that there is more to than just World Dominance, he wished to rule it without destroying anything! The greatest astonishment was when I saw in Epsode 12 The Hero, Gram fighting side by side aiding him from behind as Velvet Velsvalt, Veltol fighting Meldia well she was controlled by someone name I forgot! But the point is once in the past they mere Enemies! Now they are supporting side by side fighting for a cause! This level of Team resonance doesn't even come to someone who are normally close! Heck I can't even tell if I have ever seen such a display of team resonance in a single anime, I may have watched, I may have forgotten but this was exceptionally great team work! Both the Hero Gram and the Deamon Lord Velvet Velsvalt, Veltol has changed for the good, they have come to understand and accept but Gram was different he suffered the most you can say first he family was killed because of Veltol then after he defeated the Demon Lord he got the gift of immortality from the goddess Meldia. Then he watched his own people whome he sacrificed so much to protect backstab him in the very end! The people made him feel as if he was no longer needed but that changed when Veltol showed up he gave him a reason to be called as a Hero again! The very man who's army killed Gram's family! Pretty ironic but as a wise man said "The Closest one are the one to hurt you the most and a time will come when your greatest Enemy will become your greatest Allie"! At least, they changed for the best I would assum as they got a bigger problem to deal with that organization that is behind above all! Quiet the organization they have built as they managed to make a contingency plan to control Meldia to fight Veltol quiet the organization they have built up in 500 years! I wander what season 2 will bring I am eagerly waiting for the next season can't wait to see what that organization has been plotting and can't wait to see what they have planned for the Demon Lord Veltol! There are more associates of Veltol like Marcus who betrayed him? Is also in that organization? Who knows really right? Only way to find it out is in the next season! Lesss goooo!

Anyone giving this less than an 8/10 isn't giving a critical review. The plot, pacing, art, characters, music, world design is all top notch. Scoring it between an 8/10 and a 10/10 is personal preference, but anyone giving less shouldnt be taken seriously. This is Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost in the Shell, and Fate/Stay Night thrown into a blender, and it works *very* well. I thought the Demon Lord's voice actor giving it 100% evil voice the entire time was a little bit tiring to listen to, but it made sense for his character. Just wish it was toned down a little, and that's why I'm giving it a 9/10 instead of a perfect score. Don't think this is actually perfect, but it's enjoyable as hell. Watch it.

9.5/10 I've never done an anime review before since I prefer my small community of manga readers, but I can't help but review this after how speechless and giddy this left me. I've previously encountered the Demon Lord 2099 through its first manga, but despite how promising it seemed, it got discontinued. Of course, I was immensely disappointed, but then there was a remake! Aaand.... the remake never got translations. However, after darkness there is light because somehow, and some God spoken way, there is this. An anime. Honestly, it was my first "new" anime in 3 years. Yup, I've officially retired from watching anime and only occasionally keep up with my favorites, watching their sequels (Hi, One Punch Man and Overlord). And Oh Boy, the potential I saw in the first manga did not disappoint. Of course, there are tons of parallels that can be drawn between this and "The devil is a part-timer," and I won't deny that. Heck, even the final boss fight was on a skyscraper. But, I must say that this is just... better? Perhaps it's the cyber-punk setting or the Gen-Z humor, but the comedy and action were simply amazing. Putting aside the comedy aspects, the writing was well thought out, and the direction of the story through animations was breathtaking. I mean this with my whole heart that episode 11 was one of the best anime episodes, direction, and story-wise that I can recall within the past decade. The entire episode felt like a suspenseful short film, and I'm left flabbergasted at how this episode is in my supposed edgy and funny demon lord anime. With that, all the characters are lovable and get progressed/explored well, especially the heroines. There are also tons of villains or side characters that make an actual impact on the story besides getting shoved in there for plot reasons. If you can handle and enjoy some cringe, this may as well be the peak you have been searching for. Reading Rankings (Portnoy inspired + A Huang-Teizan Original) 10 - God’s penmanship 9 - Must-read. Drop everything else. 8 - Instant bookmark 7 - Entertaining 6 - Good to pass time 5 - Why are you reading this? 4 - Bad. 3 - Typical garbage. 2 - My head hurts. 1 - Retirement is a thought. 0 - “Did they even give you a story?!”

Demon Lord 2099 Is like a warm blanket Its fun I had a smile on my face the whole way through. I love "out of time" stories, and seeing the Demon Lord come to terms with an even more modern world was amazing. The struggles of immortality and how the world changes around you are handled with a grace that many shows choose to skip over. That final line at the end of the first episode Man, it hits you right there in the feels. The soundtrack fits most scenes well, and the OP was something I genuinely looked forward to every episode. The characters are fun, and while they follow familiar anime archetypes, they are executed in a way that makes them feel like they have been with you like an old friend The imortal hero is a diffent take on the "hero that saves the kingdom" one that belives his place is fading but still that fire burns with in him hay look if none of that sells it to you there is a point where the demon lord block a power punch and say dont woriey i have over 1 millon subscribers and its fun

The anime was super fun and was a great blend of cyberpunk augments and magic systems with the classic tropes of heroes, demon lords, and gods. I adore this anime and felt the sub and dub were both great. The main character has a great personality and is always fun to follow. The show is short and to the point with not much filler. The series follows a path that you do see coming and the plot lines make sense in the perspective of the characters. I had a lot of fun with this one. The sound design is absolutely great too, wonderful song choices. And I would just enjoy the opening every time.

You really can't trust the scores on this website anymore, huh? This is hands-down the best "demon lord" anime I've seen. It's fun from start to finish, with two extremely fun arcs that have pretty much everything you would want from something of this genre. The characters are likeable, with the main character obviously being overpowered - but nothing too over-the-top. The story is solid, exciting, and makes sense. What's nice about the story here is that they basically split it into two mini-seasons. It almost felt like watching two different genres of anime. The action felt pretty good too, even if I would not say it's the main selling point of the anime. What really sold it to me though, was that despite all of these things, they still found room for some comedy. Yes, some of the decisive action scenes are a bit corny at times. But considering they only had 12 episodes to work with, you honestly can't complain. Especially when there isn't a single boring episode. Definitely give this a try. Easy 9/10. Really hope this gets another season.
