Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Man where do I even start with this one? I went into Wistoria mostly blind after seeing some hype online and a couple of clips and honestly it absolutely floored me. I sat down thinking I would watch a few episodes over the weekend and ended up bingeing all twelve in basically one go. Time just disappeared. By the time the ending song of episode twelve hit I was sitting there like wait it is already over? That is how you know something is special. The setup sounds familiar at first. A magic academy where everyone can sling spells except our boy Will Serfort. But it never felt like cheap underdog bait. Will is not some secret chosen one with broken powers or a tragic backstory. He is just a stubborn hardworking dude who promised his childhood friend he would reach the top of the tower no matter what. In a world that worships wands and magic like it is the only thing that matters this kid picks up a sword and keeps swinging. That quiet burning determination hit me harder than I expected. I have been in that spot before you know? Not literally fighting monsters obviously but grinding away at something everyone around you thinks is pointless. Watching Will get looked down on ignored or straight up pitied by classmates it actually made my chest tight sometimes. But he never turns bitter. He keeps that goofy cheerful energy even when things look impossible and it genuinely made me reflect on how I handle my own background noise. There is a scene where he is pushing through something ridiculous and I legit muttered hell yeah out loud at two in the morning. My wife side eyed me so hard lol. The fights are chef kiss. Sword versus magic never gets old here. The choreography feels weighty creative and satisfying without turning into over the top screaming contests. Animation is consistently great fluid action nice use of colors and the magic effects actually look magical instead of just random sparkles. The soundtrack is another standout. Nothing too crazy but those tracks during training or quiet moments they just fit. Soothing when it needs to be hype when it counts. I have had the opening song stuck in my head for days. What really sells it though is the cast around Will. His friends and rivals start off skeptical some are straight up jerks but you get to watch those relationships shift in really natural earned ways. No sudden changes for plot convenience. Everyone feels like they have their own goals and baggage which makes the academy setting feel alive instead of just a backdrop. Is it perfect? Nah. A couple of episodes drag a tiny bit in the middle while setting up bigger stuff and some side characters could have used more screen time. But those are nitpicks. The heart the vibes the way it makes you root for Will like he is your buddy that is what carries it to a full ten out of ten for me. If you are tired of generic power fantasy or want something that actually makes you feel something while delivering solid action give this a shot. I am already deep into season two and it is keeping the momentum. Wills journey is not over and I am strapped in for the long haul. Ten out of ten. Easily one of my favorite new series in a while. Go watch it.

I believe in that everyones time is precious, since time is something thats so scarce and unrewindable. this anime really has a great pacing and doesnt even tries to stall, which most of animes doesnt even try to bother themselves with “respecting reader/watcher (consumer)’s time” you dont have to last 100 200 eps or 400/500 chapters to be a good anime/manga just tell your story without dragging things and pack your finale up sure you might not be the most selling manga but as a watcher ill be making sure to respect your choice to care about consumers time, great serie guys definitely a hidden gem

Wistoria: Wand and Sword was a solid watch that surprised me more than I expected. I really liked the underdog angle of Will being unable to use magic in a world where magic is everything, and seeing him rely on pure effort and swordsmanship made his fights feel earned. The action scenes were easily the highlight, with strong animation and a sense of impact that kept things exciting. That said, the story follows familiar magic-academy tropes, and some characters feel underdeveloped, which holds it back from being great. Even so, it’s an enjoyable anime with enough heart and hype moments to stay engaging throughout. Overall, Wistoria is a fun and dependable fantasy series that I’d give a 7/10.

Last night I sat there looking for a "whatever" show with decent animation to keep me entertained for a few hours, and Wistoria seemed just like a perfect fit for that. Looking at the pretty generic character designs, the world as well as the premise I was expecting some typical fantasy slop, although the type of slop that I could at least get some enjoyment out of. But somehow, I was actually quite wrong. Like, this show is ACTUALLY kinda good. At first glance, the story borrows a whole lot from Harry Potter and Black Clover with its protagonist being a guy who can't use magic trying to become a great wizard by using a sword, attending a magic school so he can reunite with his childhood friend who is super talented and already one of the strongest witches in the world. Aaaaand of course, he get relentlessly bullied and looked down upon by most of his fellow students, cuz, well you know, everyone who is different and can't use magic deserves to be treated like shit! However, our hero keeps working tirelessly to reach his goal despite all this, being a swordsman of extraordinary skill, as well as a living encyclopedia of knowledge about slaying monsters in the dungeon, since he spends most of his time grinding there to get magic school credits because he can't get any from magic practice class... So yeah, a lot of generic stuff on the table here, but despite all this the show still portrays Will (the protagonist) in a believable way. It shows that he has actual grudges against the people who mock him and make his life a living hell sometimes. Of course he does not act out any kind of malicious revenge against them, because, you know, this is a Shounen series with a school setting and they will all one day be freinds and all that... but his inability to stand up for himself is thus displayed as a realistic character flaw rather than having him be Jesus Christ who endures all the pain and then still forgives everything just because. The side cast, though being pretty generic assholes to Will at the start are also shown to have their own insecurities, being people who feel not good enough and worthless despite being gifted with strong magic. Wow, an actual good portay of how someone comes to being a bully! They even have their own different reasons for feeling bad about themselves and acting like douchebags (altough I should mention some of the reasons are a bit more understandable and fleshed out than others...)! But of course, you can just enjoy this show on a surface level as well. The animation is good and there's always some action going on to keep one entertained. Also, shoutout to Will for being an actually somehwhat original character type. Of course, there are aspects of him that you'll find in other Shounen protags too. But to be fair, I haven't seen a character who is a skilled physical fiighter, diligently studying nerd, kind of a doormat but also believably written. That's actually something new, good job author! Overall, this show isn't anything super original that borrows quite a bit from other works and has its typical Anime tropes present, but, at least in terms of character writing brings some of its own ingredients to the table, which makes it interesting to watch for more reasons than cool magic fights illuminating your screen.

An 8.5/10 production for a 6/10 story, giving us a high-7, rounded up to 8. First things first, THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE AN OPENING EPISODE. I got captivated from the first seconds, with music fitting perfectly for the image displayed, tingling my medieval fantasy senses. A monologue that (albeit somewhat cliched) is good at setting the tone and expectation for the remainder of the series. All of that paired with good / above average animation, and you have a winner! That is until you hit the first few episodes and begin noticing some "familiar patterns". You see, there is a very thin line between "copying" and "taking inspiration from" / "making a reference to" other works, and Wistoria wavers between the two constantly, often landing on the former's side. Some of it seems intentional because of how obvious it is, but it goes beyond a good-faith reference. To make my point clear, I'll reference some characters/scenes from other series and I bet you'll have zero trouble recognizing the equivalent characters/scenes in this anime: * Severus Snape (Harry Potter) * Newspaper with moving images (Harry Potter) * Broom flight / Quidditch (Harry Potter) * Bell vs Minotaur (DanMachi S1) * Jinwoo's acceleration (Solo Leveling) * Bell falling to lower floors (Danmachi... twice? I think S2 and S4?) * The dungeon giving birth to monsters (DanMachi) * Another race came from another world (Eminence, GATE(?)) * Mashle * Blade Steal (Chivalry of a Failed Knight) At first I was surprised when I found out the author of this is also the author of DanMachi, but that surprise turned to disappointment pretty quickly as the series moved forward and so many commonalities started to appear. It's as if the author literally copied parts and changed the names, adding some minor sprinkles on top to mask it. Other than this, so far, characters, story, and dialogue are neither annoyingly cliche (well, some parts are) nor groundbreakingly novel. As always, not much is explained about magic or the world. Anyhow... Animation quality is pretty high. There is a heavy reliance on 3D throughout, but it is pretty well done and most (but not all) of it is painted over or shaded in a way that makes it blend quite well overall. Only a few minor scenes seem out of place (rotating camera over the stadium and background looks weird), the rest is between good and great. Sound design is also done incredibly well; especially the various effects during the fights. Almost every episodes ends in a cliffhanger, but it's the kind that actually makes you want to watch more rather than be annoyed. All of these lift the otherwise undeserving series to a high rating. Overall, it was a good watch that's worth the time you'll spend, and I look forward to the second season. ---- Meta review fun fact: Did you notice that the top "recommended" review has a rating of 7 which is unusually low, and that the top "not recommended" review has a rating of 5 which is unusually high?

If you're a fan of the action genre, Wistoria: Wand and Sword is an anime that deserves a spot on your watchlist. While it begins with the familiar tropes of a typical fantasy anime—magical schools, heroic quests, and an underdog protagonist. It doesn't take long to pick up its pace and reveal its true charm. One of the highlights of Wistoria is its action sequences. The fight scenes are nothing short of spectacular, with fluid animation that elevates every battle to a visual feast. These moments truly stand out, making the show an engaging experience, especially for action lovers. The hero moments are particularly memorable, adding an extra layer of excitement and emotional impact. While the story itself might feel average and predictable at times, the way it's executed keeps you hooked. The second half of the anime, in particular, steps up its game, delivering more intensity, excitement, and awe-inspiring moments that make it hard to stop watching. If you're in the mood for a fast-paced anime with jaw-dropping action and stunning visuals, Wistoria: Wand and Sword won't disappoint. It may not reinvent the genre, but it delivers where it matters most. Highly recommended for action enthusiasts!

This is a very standard power fantasy. If that's your thing, then actually, this is for you. It's got a pushover MC and a group of people who all fawn over the MC. Antagonists with (imo) no good reason to cause conflict, and then get "owned" super hard by the MC. Lots of side chatter from no name characters spewing forth opinions trying to generate pity/hype for MC. And various 1 minute pity backstories for characters trying to give some context to the reason why they are shit. The MC is the most frustrating part. So, we got sad, bullied MC who just starts out with 2 really good friends (both because love?). His goal is to become a "Magia Vander" (Top of the top magician) to be with his crush. We don't get much else about his personality or interests. So, that doesn't really change ever throughout the show. There are moments where we could perhaps see relevant character info, but they end up not actually mattering like minutes later. His relationships (all types) with other characters are equally uninteresting because of this. The MC can rarely do "play" with other characters or even interact romantically, so a lot of development ends up one sided where other characters gain new found understandings of the MC. Meanwhile, the MC keeps just derping around forward with seemingly no changes. Be more happy or something, jesus. I think the animation was solid and any CGI was pretty fine. Ditto for voice acting. The OP and ED are kinda good. I wouldn't skip them c: I can't really say I enjoyed it. But, it wasn't unwatchable. It's like wheat bread, just tolerable.

Story revolves around MC Will Serford, who is meek and submissive kind of guy with no backbone. If you are planning to watch this then brace yourself for boring first half which is painfully slow and lackluster. Because of its boring nature I dropped and picked up this series for 6 times before finally pushing through. When I didn't had anything better left to watch so I gave this series another chance. Trust me it gets good after 7th episode until then just try to resist punching yourself. I will go through each aspect in this review. 1. Story: 6/10 like I said the first half of anime and mean first 7 episodes are profoundly boring and story does not move even an inch. Just minor world building and character intro which could have been done in 2 episodes. Story picks up after 8th episode and becomes intriguing, with some mystery to leave viewers wanting a second season (which is confirmed). While the second half redeems the show somewhat. Nothing ground breaking just potential of being something good in second season. 2. World Building : 5/10 Frankly this season sucks in this department as well despite having useless 6 episodes it still fail to delve deep in lore or just setting of world. The only things that are covered are the MC’s immediate surroundings, leaving the larger world feeling underdeveloped and unremarkable. 3. Characters : 6/10 Don't even get me started on this one. Each and every characters are either annoying as hell or utterly forgettable. They cant even do justice to characters in first 6 dragged-out episodes for us to feel something for someone. Only in second half characters actually shows some spark for us to notice them and only then I managed to remember MC's name. MC lacks a serious backbone and instead you feeling bad for him you will get furious on him for his lack backbone and lack of ability to standup for himself. This get mildly better in second half. Other character that stood out in second half is the Red Haired bully Boy whose name I don’t remember because that’s how much you care about bothering to remember the name of these characters. And girl name elffy because she suppose to be romantic interest of MC and big shot called magic vendor or something. I managed to remember the name of this girl not because it's beautifully written character but it is such generic a** name. 4. Music: 7/10 The music is functional but not memorable. It serves its purpose in complementing the scenes but doesn’t leave a lasting impression. 5. Direction: 2/10 The direction is easily the worst aspect of this season. all the flows mentioned above is present because the direction sucks. Poor pacing, overdrawn exposition, and a lack of emotional Depth in the first half. Will’s backstory and the bullying he endured could have been shown using flashbacks and atleast 4 episodes could have been cut down to make it more precise but sadly director missed every opportunity to tighten the storytelling. 6. Animation: 9/10 this is easily the best part of this anime. Animation team did Banging job on this one. Animation is fluid and character are expressive. The Action sequences are Awesomely animated and drawn. This is hands down the only saving grace of this Season. Despite its glaring flaws, I will still recommend people to watch this anime because lot of these problems mentioned above is addressed somewhat in second half of the season and story does get good and things slowly starts to unravel which makes this anime watchable. Would I rewatch it? Probably not, but I’ll keep an eye on the second season in the hope that it will fulfill its untapped potential.

This was a title that flew under the radar until its first episode. Even then, it was only expected to be a black clover alternative. A world run by magic and a main character who can't use it. Then said main character is physically better than everyone else and swings a big sword. Will grew up beside a female prodigy who is arguably the best to ever hold a wand. That being said, his entire goal in life is to stand beside her at the top of the world. The only problem is that while he is the best at everything, without magic it is hard to pass magic school let alone see the top. To make things worse his peers look down on him and bully him as in this world, one mage is equal to an entire army of people without magic. This show was stellar for what it was. Great writing and solid animation where it was needed. It didn't do anything new, but what it did do it did extremely well. You shouldn't be able to predict what happens next in regards to execution and that is all that any story in this day and age should strive to do. Most certainly worth a watch
spoopypineapple
Pretty solid, worth watching if you just want a braindead show that's easy to get into. The fights are phenomenal, though unfortunately it was VERY lacking story-wise. I cannot tell you just how many unanswered questions I had literally every single episode, and the pacing felt way too rushed. Normally pacing isn't a huge deal to me, but they genuinely didn't explain ANYTHING, and they just completely skipped right past so many scenes or interactions I wanted to see. 12 episodes later and I still have no clue about some of the core concepts that should've been explained or hinted at in episode 1. For example, they don't even explain the magic system AT ALL, nor how Will met his closest friends or why they care about him at all. If we go by story alone, it's a bit of a dumpster fire. Although the hype moments can make up for it for me, I'll admit it never really felt like anyone was in danger. This should've had more episodes to cover this much story to be honest. Story - 4/10 Characters - 2/10 (All pretty generic, some likeable some dislikeable, but 0 interesting characters.) Animation/fights - 8/10 Would watch a season 2.

If you're looking for an anime to fill your O.P. magicless MC plate in a world full of magic, then Wistoria is the anime for you. To basically describe this anime "It's a more serious Mashle, but instead of fists and creampuffs its swords and battle glasses. It is a nice watch for these reasons: 1. The storytelling and setting This anime's character storytelling is insane, as not only do we have a somewhat fleshed-out backstory and reasons for why the magicless MC is at a magic academy and trying to reach his impossible goal. But, all the other side characters have their histories and reasons explored as well. Basically saying that this anime doesn't just leave you guessing why someone does or acts in that manner without providing a solid backstory. This anime has the setting of the oh-so-common magical academy (like Reign of the Seven Spellblades), especially when it comes to focusing on the mega dungeon/labyrinth right below the academy where the characters must enter and fight monsters to achieve their goals. 2. The animation Wistoria has very solid animation throughout the entire season and does not seem to falter anywhere even in the high-impact action scenes. The spells look amazing and the sword fighting visuals are nothing to scoff up, especially when you know that the director of this anime was also the director of Black Clover. The character's expressions and body language also benefit from this good animation style. 3. The Trope and cliché I will not lie, Wistoria does fall into the category of the MC with immense powers that isn't respected or is bullied due to those powers being different. It also has the classic supporting female classmate who receives no attention from the MC, as the MC only has eyes for one person (making it their goal to reach her). Hey there's also a tournament arc in the middle of this anime. However, if you do like an overpowered MC and these tropes then this anime will be a good watch for you. Overall, I enjoyed Wistoria for the anime it was due to its amazing characters, animation and fight scenes throughout the entirety of it. It is a great adaption from its source material and is defiantly worth a watch.

Wistoria Wand and Sword Wistoria Wand and Sword is an okay spin on the magical school format which introduces some interesting and gorgeous animation but falls short of living up to it. Particularly the nature of how plot information is conveyed through constant repetition drags down the show a large amount. Depictions of women are unfortunate despite designs I would class as okay. For these reasons I would class it as a 6/10, above average but nothing special. To start with probably the best thing about Wistoria the animation at play here is stellar. The spellcasting effectively uses really nice and complex shading to give a great feel as well as lots of time and attention being given to objects created. The Elven wood summoning and fire magic are particular standouts to me but smaller things like Julius’ ice flowers also came out great. On the physical side the fight choreography for Will’s movement is extremely dynamic and like the elusive samurai which is also airing this season immensely aids in selling his character. The one notable sour spot is the backgrounds, especially in the final arc where the messy flesh texture is in my opinion poorly done and distracting. However throughout the show there are various points where the contrast between the amazing character art and relatively cheap backgrounds becomes distracting. The character design is simple with fire mages having red hair, ice mages having blue hair and so on. It is very effective in blocking out the characters. This is aided significantly by the fun design used for the caped uniforms which I enjoyed watching flap around with the aforementioned very good animation budget. Female designs in particular benefit a lot from this largely avoiding male gazey big breasted low cut tops with the exception of elfie whose facial design I quite like but the rest of which I find very unfortunate. Continuing with female agency in the show is very poor with every major female character of will’s age group present ending up living a life defined in relation to Will. Colette is never seen spending her time thinking about anything else with the same true for “Ms Perfect” Lihanna” Even the all powerful Magia Vender Elfie is seen clutching a pillow of will in the ED and frequent cuts to her all consist of her thinking about him. To cut them some slack on this it appears to be a general writing fault as this broadly applies to every character in the series however I don’t think this makes it much better. It would’ve helped the world building a lot if we were exposed to someone who didn’t spend all their time thinking about Will after first interaction. Continuing from the characters, I found the writing for most of them to be oversimplified and a bit uninteresting. Characters are classed into an archetype and with 1 notable rapid exception never evolve or deviate from that. Sion probably has the best written development but the way they play him still gets very grating when you can see exactly what’s going on. Possibly contributing to this was the series inability to not step on it’s own toes by repeating information. Using an example from the character writing the elf wignall’s backstory is first implied in a way that conveyed all necessary information to the audience. However it was then felt necessary to repeat that information multiple times dragging out the scene and making it feel shallow. This is an issue that extends to pretty much everything be it showing someone attacking wings and dealing no damage, having them say that only to cut to will in his head saying “I read in a book those wings don’t take damage”. Another example is when an important person shows up in the final episode and the group’s reactions clearly convey their opinions on him; however it is once again felt necessary to give a narration of the information. Both of these massively slow down the scene and remove the interest giving to the audience by having to piece together the already pretty spoonfed shown information. The world building is so:so, it’s not a complete copy of fantasy tropes but it still finds itself pretty simple. The credits system is interesting but finds itself in a weird position as it becomes clear that the author intends to use it as a power scaling system. The magic system is nothing special and finds itself in the common midpoint between a clicky and defined system and my personal preference for the vague and awe inspiring undefined nature of the cosmos. The use of dwarves is pretty simple but I found it to be an effective way to convey the unfair and cruel state of the dominant society As I said in the opener though I am critical of it I don’t hate Wistoria wand and sword, if it was some disgusting slop I would’ve dropped it at episode 4. It’s something that is firmly okay and I’m sure someone who has watched far less than me might even find it very enjoyable. But as it stands it’s got enough problems to chip away and it’s foundations and bring it down to a 6.
Spoodsy
As an enjoyer of fantasy and isekai-adjacent, power-fantasy anime, the premise and themes of this anime suit me very well. I also find the lore and setting intriguing, and the art, character design (and at times, the animation) to be very appealing. These positives are what allowed me to sit through this anime despite its god-awful characters and writing. I suspect that the poor quality in this regard can be traced back to the original manga writer, which probably means that future seasons (which seem to have been confirmed) will struggle to improve. All this is to say that I wouldn't recommend watching this anime as it stands, but if a director or writer manages to salvage the characters and writing in upcoming seasons, it might actually be worth watching, as I do feel that the studio, setting, and story hold some promise.

Definitely the best anime of the season. The plot does have some loose ends and hiccups, but the animation carried this anime beautifully (specially the fighting scenes). The first episode has some CGI that didn't go well with a lot of people, but it was fixed from episode 2 onwards. This anime didn't end in a cliffhanger, but there is a lot of the story that will be unraveled in future seasons, we clearly only got to see the tip of the iceberg that is Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria. Characters: 8/10. For the most part the character development went well, and we have a lot of characters that change from villain to ally. Even when a character's plot doesn't seem to unravel well, at the end of the anime they manage to bring them together properly. Animation 10/10. This is the strong point of this anime. The art, the animation, and the scenes are all beautifully made, make sure to watch it on 1080p! Plot: 7/10. Unfortunately here is where the anime loses some points... They wrapped it up nicely at the end, but some episodes just felt like useless fillers, and we end up with a LOT of loose ends (for example: characters that were there but didn't add to the plot at all, characters that are supposed to meet but never met, villains without a name or purpose, and even a NEW character presented at the LAST episode shrouded in mystery). So yeah, the plot is good, but doesn't get full marks. Overall: 8.5/10. This is totally worth watching, and if they keep the same quality for the next seasons it will for sure become very popular.

Wands or Swords?? Why not BOTH? From the creator of "Danmachi" we get a new series that both resembles Black Clover and Mashle, known as "Wistoria: Wand and Sword". Top tier animation, Cool fights, Unconceivablle odds, what more does a shonen junkie need??? The story follows our MC "Will Selfort" in a world where magic is everything, where at the pinnacle of all races the "Magia Vender" the most elite of mages reside inside the "Tower" guarding the world from invaders from the heavens. Will sworn to his childhood friend "Elfaria" that he will climb the tower and become a Magia vender, however as he is unable to cast even the most simple of spells, he must find a way foward and become the world´s one and only "warrior". Although cliche shonen our MC is not like his predecessors, Will is a hard working, studious protagonist that slaps most muscle head MC´s to shame. With his sharps instincts, resilient body, analysing mind and strong-will, he fights head on unconceivable odds in order to achieve his dreams. The studio pulled a 180 turn from what looked like a generic shonen anime into a highly enjoyable cliche shonen. The animation from the very beginning is flawless, together with the music creates very epic fight sequences, the characters are captivating and interesting. Their designs are really well drawn and cute especially the MC´s familiar "Kiki". Overall, it may be kind of cliche to most shonen out there, however with it´s unique design style, captivating characters and story, it´s highly enjoyable and makes you want to watch more!. I highly recommned this anime and as of now a second season has been confirmed. How I rank (This is just my opinion): (Inspired by Huang-Teizan) 10 - Bendicion de Dios 9 - Now this is Peak!! 8 - Bingeworthy! 7 - Good 6 - Enjoyable 5 - Either Echii or just enough to get by 4 - I´m just here to know how it ends. 3 - "Are you related to Rent a Girlfriend?" 2 - Que cojones 1 - My head doesn´t explode because it can´t. 0 - "Even a Hentai has a better story than you!"

This is one of those shows that started off strong, but its score and my enjoyment of it kept waning as the season continued. To some degree, that was always bound to happen. This show is treading ground that might as well be a trope at this point, with Will, a magically inert person in a world full of mages, trying to become the very best mage, like no one ever was, to join his girlfriend as a Magia Vander. Apart from the girlfriend part, replace Magia Vander with Divine Visionary (Mashle) or Wizard King (Black Clover) and not much changes. It certainly has a new coat of paint, as this series looks great, but it's not remarkably different from either of the other series where a guy who uses non-magic abilities is able to clash with and defeat highly powerful magical characters. And if that was all it was, I could see this season being a fun distraction without being particularly interesting. I do think there's more to Wistoria, however. The backdrop of having this large artificial sky created by the Magia Vander invites a lot of questions about the basis for their existence and what exactly they're trying to keep out. The existence of a large dungeon with most of the floors yet to be explored (the final episode suggests there are at least 50) and extremely dangerous monsters to fight with all kinds of different tactics necessary to defeat them is intriguing. We've only gotten the barest look at what the power scaling looks like, so there's a lot of room to grow and build out the magic system in this world, as well as establish some very dangerous-looking villains with interesting movesets and designs. All that could, and probably should, have elevated this season. But, alas, I was pretty disappointed with this one, mainly for two reasons. The first is that it does feel like the show is barely getting started delving into its more interesting elements. The villains have a couple of episodes with limited screentime where they show that they're a force to be reckoned with before voluntarily leaving the show. The top mages in this world get an introduction, but largely become the objects of desire of other characters rather than interesting in their own right. We're shown a person who might be the most powerful mage around and are even introduced to a character who may be pivotal to Will's growth... in the final episode. We get some insight into the dungeon, but only find out how far these characters are delving and for what reason... in the final episode. We only have stories and visuals of the artificial sky. It's all very bare bones worldbuilding up to these points, and so just when the show is getting to its more interesting worldbuilding, it cuts off. Makes me excited for S2, but leaves S1 feeling rather weak. The second is the characters. With Mashle, the negativity Mash receives throughout is part of the reason the show is so funny - it's just over the top and ridiculous. But with Wistoria, it doesn't have that comic base to justify characters being about as dumb as they possibly can. Maybe that's part of the reason I've never seriously committed to watching Black Clover as well: I really don't like when characters put prejudice and personal frustrations over basic common sense. Sion, in particular, is hard to watch throughout much of this show because he finds out early and often how powerful Will is, but seems so hung up on a prior conversation that he absolutely refuses to see the forest for the trees, putting himself and those around him in danger while ignoring obvious opportunities to succeed. I can accept it more with Julius who's just an all-around prick, but with characters like Sion and Wignall who at least seem to know how to prioritize and focus, their willingness to get caught up in personal spite and feelings of inadequacy in the middle of a fight for their lives is just baffling. With a few exceptions, the priorities of these characters are all over the place and I don't really buy it. It doesn't help that some characters like Rosti just seem to function almost entirely in the background until they want to introduce some romantic tension or get a last minute power-up. They're plot devices rather than characters. Elfaria seems like a fascinating character to spend some time with, but we don't get a lot of insight into her beyond stories from Will, which makes her mostly a plot device as well up to this point. That's not to say all the characters are this frustrating. Will may have some issues with his priorities, but his genuine nature and willingness to push himself through all this is absolutely heartening. Colette is best girl and spends a lot of the season trying to get characters to put their heads on straight - too bad her affections for Will are probably going to remain unrequited. Edward is at least an interesting idea for a Snape-esque character who commands one of the better scenes in the show, though I wish we spent more time understanding him. Iris, Cauldron and Workner both seem like they could be very interesting if we got to know them better while still functioning well in the plot by introducing different points of view and interests. There's a lot of "this looks good" in the series, even if it all still feels like it's still getting going. In the end, though the visuals carry this series into "good" territory for me (it goes awfully hard in a couple of its fights), I can't say that its other elements go that far. It's a lot of set up that hasn't really paid off yet, so while I look forward to a S2, I'm a little tepid on this one.

[Hood Review] So this was one of them anime I had sitting on my “To Watch” list for a little while. I really didn’t know what to expect going in, but this is definitely one of them ones‼️ I’m honestly surprised it’s not a little more popular because this shit damn near completely blew my mind. 😂 It’s REALLY good. You got an overpowered-ass main character in a world full of racist mfs, so naturally you’re gonna be rooting for bro the whole way through. 💀😂 Now that I think about it, this anime is literally like Black Clover in a different universe if you’ve seen Black Clover. The main character is an outcast who uses a sword in a world where everybody else uses magic. Sound familiar? 😂 Black Clover is slightly better in my opinion, but the similarities are definitely there. So if you really like Black Clover, WATCH THIS SHIT IMMEDIATELY. There were honestly some moments in this show where I was getting chills during the fights. The fight scenes are SUPER fye 🔥🔥 The character development is great too, but I’m not gonna go too deep into that because I don’t wanna spoil anything. And let me just say this—the main character ain’t Black, but he is DEFINITELY invited to the cookout because bro has endured WAY too much. 😂💪🏾 My only real complaint is the pacing. It’s just a little too fast for me. The storyline is actually really good, so I don’t understand why they didn’t slow things down and let certain moments breathe a little more. I feel like this anime could’ve been even better if they took their time with it. Overall though, this shit was 🔥🔥🔥. If you’re a Black Clover fan, GO WATCH THIS SHIT ASAP. You’re missing out if you don’t.

Story This anime mimics a great deal of plots from other shows like Black Clover, I Parry Everything, and Mashle. The overarching main plot has yet to be revealed, meaning the narrative heavily relies on tropes you've likely seen executed elsewhere. Art & Animation This is where the series shines. The art style is very clean, high-quality, and beautifully drawn. While the animated scenes during the fights are nothing extraordinary, they are very well put together and definitely captivating once the action gets going. Character When you begin watching this, you will not be seeing anything new from the protagonist or the side characters. They fit perfectly into standard genre molds, offering little in the way of fresh personality or unexpected development. Enjoyment Seeing the immediate similarities to other shows tanked my interest right out of the gate. However, because of that exact familiarity, I found myself staying with it just to see if there would eventually be anything different that sets it apart.

It is visually good, but narratively too conventional to deserve a higher rating, the fights are dynamic, the direction knows how to convey speed and strength, the settings have plenty of detail and some confrontations show a quality far superior to what is usually found in a school fantasy of this type, the music also helps elevate the action moments and makes several scenes feel more epic than they really are at a narrative level, Will, the protagonist, is easy to support because he does not abandon his goal despite the contempt he receives, and i liked that his strength does not depend solely on possessing a secret unexplained power, but also on his training, knowledge of monsters and ability to adapt during battles, the problem is that the story uses a formula that is too familiar, a protagonist marginalized for not having the skill everyone considers indispensable, arrogant classmates who humiliate him, rivalries born of prejudice and situations created so that Will repeatedly proves that those who underestimated him were wrong, it shifts from Sion to Julius as figures who serve a similar function, so the conflict based on rejection of Will ends up feeling repetitive, the magic festival and certain rivalries also progress too quickly, wasting opportunities to build them with greater depth, the supporting characters are pleasant and some have good moments, especially Colette, Rosti, Sion, Wignall and Lihanna, but during this season they still feel defined mainly by basic archetypes, specific insecurities or by the relationship they maintain with Will, Elfaria is also fundamental to the protagonist's motivation, but she remains so distant from him during much of the season that their relationship relies more on memories and the promise they share than on present emotional development, the world introduces interesting concepts, such as the Magia Vander, the tower, the different magical houses and the threat that exists over the sky, but it barely delves into them, i suppose this is so that much of its potential remains reserved for future seasons, there are also narrative conveniences, timely arrivals and solutions that reduce some of the tension, while certain events explained in detail end up being resolved too quickly, this anime entertains and offers visually good moments, but beneath that strong presentation i still find a fairly repetitive school fantasy, with characters and conflicts that need much more development for the work to reach a higher rating.

"When the world says you can’t, your sword says watch me." Wistoria: Wand and Sword honestly surprised me. It starts off like your typical magic school setup, but the twist is that the MC, Will Serfort, can’t use magic at all. Instead, he grinds his way through sheer willpower, swordsmanship, and insane determination. Watching him rise in a world that looks down on him for being powerless was actually really satisfying. The action scenes are clean, especially when Will clashes with magic users—it’s not just flashy effects; there’s weight in every strike. The story gives that classic underdog energy without feeling forced, and the message about hard work and persistence actually lands. Yeah, the pacing early on is a bit slow and some side characters don’t get much shine, but the later episodes more than make up for it. The art and sound design stay solid throughout too. Overall, it’s one of those shows that reminds you why you love rooting for the underdog. If you’re into stuff like Black Clover or DanMachi, this is a must-watch. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s pure heart and grit—and that’s what makes it hit.
