Kunon the Sorcerer Can See

This anime was like pulling teeth, sure it might seem like a good idea but it gets worse and worse as it goes on and then at end you just get this painful mess. The concept for this series was a good one, it had strong potential, and in the first few episodes you could actually see that potential, it just obviously fails to live up to and deliver on it, there are a myriad of reasons for that, and don't worry I will get into that. What we do have is a series where the MC goes from being able to do nothing to very quickly being able to do everything and is also very obnoxious at the same time. One of the biggest issues I have is that nothing really happens, the initial episodes Kunon has a clear goal, something he seeks to work towards, after that it kind of drifts away he's distracted by the joys of magic and seeking to get better at magic. There is no conflict that happens, even just between characters, any conflict that may exist is quickly resolved, so that 'hook' of wondering 'what is going to happen next?' just isn't there. There is also no struggle, question of will he actually achieve set goal or task, because we never see Kunon struggle or fail or have to put in hard effort, everything instead comes easily for him and it's constantly reinforced how wonderful and great he is, how talented and amazing he is, there is no question that he could fail at anything. As such the actual contents of each episode is relatively meaningless as nothing really happens in them, time passes and occasionally it remembers that wait he actually had a goal he wanted to work toward so lets use this episode to focus on it so we can get back to forgetting all about it in every other episode. Even Slice of Life and the Slow-Life series have either conflict between characters or a struggle that has to be overcome, there is always some kind of hook that makes you want to keep watching, this is the basics and for this to fail on those basics is not good. Another issue is the 'comedy' which doesn't work half the time and just ends up with Kunon coming across as annoying and obnoxious, and as the series progresses the act either wears thin or he gets even more obnoxious, but part of the issue may be that early on Iko his maid helps balance things out and that then becomes less. The one thing that would have helped this series, it's potential strength that became one of its weaknesses, was Kunon's blindness. Clearly the author has never encountered someone who is blind before and has no idea of how blindness affects people especially those who are born blind, because the representation isn't just way off, it's insulting. I don't think the author understands disability in the slightest because they were quick to drop all limitations at the earliest convivence which shows they don't know how to write a disabled character. This was the hook of the series and it was quickly ditched, the fact that Kunon very early on was able to overcome all limitations and was effectively able to see even if not physically able to see eliminated all reason for him to create magical eyes for himself very early on, it also meant he had no difficulties at all, there were no struggles to overcome, this was an act of self-sabotage that put the series on a doom spiral. It would have been easy to attach limitations which would have shown a still ever present struggle and made his goal very much still at the forefront And this may be a nit-pick but the magic system doesn't really make much sense, or rather it is poorly explained and as such it raises a lot of questions for me. Over all this is a badly written series and I'm glad it is over so I can be done with it, the only reason I haven't given this a lower score is that the first few episodes did have a certain something to them that kept me watching, Iko also kept me watching, but this just wound up being a big disappointment, a whole load of nothing, and it felt like a chore to get through. I normally like these types of magic fantasy anime, it's rare that I find myself strongly disliking such a series, yet this achieved that.

This anime got same treatment like jack for all trade just because it follows seasonal Isekai tropes . I agree it got some cringe and overuse of gentleman trope just to give mc a different personality more like to overcome his struggles which he faced from birth . The overall concept is pretty cool and detailed, it's not like other Isekai cliche where mc use non chant magic spells or explains how science is responsible for magic etc . Magic used by mc is pretty simple but detailed like it explores 100s of possibilities in just on spell. The struggle to overcome birth disability is a inspiring journey, it literally changed the relationship of mc with different people which are close to him or not . The ending is set for another season . So, i assume we getting it soon . Overall it's a 1 time bing watch anime but watch when you are free .

"Kunon the Sorcerer Can See" is a weird anime with a lot of odd characters, a very different kind of story, and plenty of obscure moments—but does that actually make it good? In short: it depends. In long: it really depends on what you look for in an anime, especially whether uniqueness alone is enough to keep you interested. Getting into it, the biggest issue is how the show handles Kunon’s blindness. After about 6 episodes, it basically stops mattering. It ends up feeling more like a cosmetic trait than an actual disability. It’s like if a paralyzed character could use magic to move again and the story never treats that as something with limitations or consequences. Because of that, the core premise loses its weight. His blindness barely affects him at the start, and once he starts using magic to “see,” it becomes almost completely irrelevant. The characters don’t help much either. A lot of them are weird, but not in a way that actually makes them interesting. They have quirky traits or strange personalities, but there’s very little depth behind them. Most of them feel one-note once you get past the surface. The ending is easily one of the weakest parts. It’s clearly meant to act as a cliffhanger for a second season, but it doesn’t feel like a proper stopping point at all. It just kind of ends wherever it can, rather than where it should. Because of that, it feels abrupt and unsatisfying, and it honestly drags down the overall experience quite a bit. That said, the show isn’t without its positives. It’s very easy to watch, and there weren’t many episodes where I didn’t get at least some enjoyment out of it. Kunon’s “gentleman” behavior (which is basically him being a bit of a womanizer) can be pretty entertaining. It’s not something you see often, so it stands out a bit, and while the humor isn’t amazing, it’s usually good enough to land. The story itself is also pretty creative. It doesn’t follow the usual fantasy anime formula, which helps it stand out in a crowded seasonal lineup. Even if you don’t end up liking it, at least it’s doing something different instead of blending in with everything else. Overall, I’d say this is a solid watch for the season, but definitely not for everyone. Its uniqueness is both its biggest strength and its biggest weakness. 7/10

Really liked the anime, but seeing overall rating by people.. might hinder S2 and onward production that makes me sad. The things I like are as follows: - MC with some lacking/disease and tends to be depressed about it -- Discovers Magic (Technology) and decides an ambition for himself that fuels life to his view of life and living standards (obv works towards it) - Support like her "Maid" is epic, especially not only in fueling the MCs motivation but mine throughout the series -- Good jokes and fun to watch - Magic used is basic most of the time, but the variations keeps on and on (improvisation) - Earliest Sensei devotes in curriculum creation to keep up with fast learner, she improvises and also pass on the mantle when she think she's not sufficient (yet she decides to pursue her own major to better herself) -- MC later on regardless of how great people he meets, still recalls and respect his earliest teacher and is gratitude towards her for her improvisation and aptitude towards trying new stuffs. Conclusion: Out of many similar troupes, felt unique and digested unique even in the same genre. Good stuffs

the bird brain emptyheadedness of the mc is appalling up til the end. the magic is nothing near cool or nice to watch just subparness we're all supposed to pretend is great in that universe. the character is as deep as a dry springroll sheet. cannot understand who was supposed to be the audience for this show. subpar and brainwashed upbringing due to a maid raising him is easily fixable but the author wants to pretend that's the charm. I watched out of spite, hoping someone slaps some sense into that greasy child but alas here we are. the highest rating it should get is 3.

I'm writing another review since the previous one got taken down (lol) Honestly... It's good. Like... Not perfect, no great animation, no intense fights, no immense author's dedication to world building and magic system design, but.. It's good. While I understand why people might dislike it, it is thoroughly enjoyable if you can get past few issues. Yes, the jokes are corny. Yes, the MC is kinda obnoxious from time to time. But this anime is self-aware regarding this. Given the fact that good fantasy with original plot is rare nowadays... and the fact that "comedy" in anime is honestly non-existent as of the latest few seasons... this one making me giggle from time to time and actually making me want to know what will happen next is probably what's making me biased in the score I give. But I truly believe that this anime is of "not for everyone" kind. So I won't push my opinion. And instead of writing a review that's purely my take after watching this anime, let me instead address the open questions from other reviews and maybe clarify to those who might read this whether this anime is for you or not: 1. If you are not into slice of life, this is not for you. Indeed, plot progression stops quickly enough. 2. If you feed on hype power fantasy/progression fantasy, you'll starve. Partially because progression stops at some point, partially because there are almost no satisfying fights. The anime tries to show MC as "smart" instead of "stupidly powerful" but the author quickly runs out of ideas of how to show it. 3. MC was explicitly raised by obnoxious young adults, leading to his behavior becoming skewed into "wtf/cringe" direction. This might get annoying, but it's a matter of taste. I hate some tropes, yes, everyone does, but at least the way this near-irritating trope was executed here was not bothering me. If you get to watch this anime with no good or bad expectations, it might give you a few genuine laughs each episode. Though, sure, in the later episodes it gets a bit stale. 4. The premise is genuinely good. The execution of the main plot point is... questionable. I, personally, dislike high-tier magical goals without deeply and intricately crafted magic system. And if you're still reading, now is the part where I start defending this anime instead of attacking it. 5. Corny jokes can be funny if executed right. This is "the best of the worst" in this department in a way that yes, it's not great, but it does what it's intending to do quite right. For the right audience this will work. Give it three episodes: if it's not working for you, drop it with no regrets. 6. This season feels like a preview for the manga/LN, and even though I hate when the producers do this, I also feel that it succeeded in it. 7. It's not... bad. I mean.. If you look at the latest seasons and filter it by 'Fantasy' tag, you will get a ton of lazy OP MC isekai, with MC who is somehow "incredibly smart but not aware of his own strength". While this is the opposite. MC is not "OP". He's aware of his strength, he's just a little bit too much unaware of the fact that the way he interacts with people is weird. Even the negative qualities of this anime is a breath of fresh air compared to what we've been given in the "low-budget less-known fantasy" genre lately. I'm feeling the review is growing too large and I don't want to repeat this anime's mistakes of not progressing the plot :) TLDR: Nothing extremely special, nothing extraordinary, but also not the usual fantasy pattern. Closer to slice of life in the second half. MC is obnoxious but not irritating. Jokes can make you genuinely giggle. Not for everyone. Give it 3 episodes. 8/10 for me, unbiased fair rating might be 5/10-8/10 depending on the watcher.

Why people probably hate it: Low-stakes. Repetitive gags. Low quality animation. Blindness doesn't affect his daily life as much as you think it should. Plot points aren't that serious and things never seem to really go anywhere. Problems are pretty minor and are solved without much struggle. It's episode 8 and MC is still a literal child, though that's pretty standard in the genre. Why I love it: The characters are funny. The characters are funny. The characters are funny. It's just so stupid in the best ways. The low quality animation only adds to the non-serious vibe for me. Minor spoilers, imagine a character alone in a room, and then a giant crab manifests ominously behind them. And then the character continues what they were doing with nary a reaction, for a good 30 seconds. Not even acknowledging the crab, not even in a joking way. Nothing. And then after a long 30 seconds, they finally put down what they're doing and address the crab. In what is supposed to be a crescendo scene that the show's been leading up to, which of course never had anything to do with crabs at any point. The whole show never even mentioned or showed a crab at all up to that point. I love it. As long as you don't take it seriously, you will enjoy it. If you want it to be a try-hard anime that actually has something meaningful to say, this isn't the anime for you.

This clearly should've been an ecchi, right? Rather than pretending like the magic and plot matters every episode should've just been Kunon being a maximum pervert and leaning way harder into his whole "women only" shtick, maybe then I wouldn't have gotten tired of his gimmick so quickly. Everything in this anime feels so half hearted because the story takes itself too seriously for what it ultimately is: Self-Insert Slop. Kunon may have a interesting design but his personality is barebones, being nothing more than the pervert trope but reeled back to make him seem like a "gentleman". All the girls are so damn bland, both design and token personality wise. Anytime a new girl was inroduced I was confused because she would have classic attributes that should make her attractive (A maid, a megane girl, a gentle ojousama, etc.) but because of how nothing burger the character designs are I just felt NOTHING for any of these burgers...and by burgers I mean girls. It could just be the fault of the very wonky animation however. Seriously the animation is not great, usually I don't care that much about animation quality anymore because I'm aware of how difficult it is to create even just fluid 5 seconds but daaaaamn man, Kunon should count himself lucky for being blind in this world.

“Kunon the Sorcerer Can See” is what happens when incompetent writing butchers an interesting idea (this happens way too often lately). There aren’t many shows that tire me out. This one is definitely one of them. Watching this was not only boring but also exhausting. This show doesn’t care about anything. Not the plot, not the story, not it’s own world, magic system or characters. It’s like watching someone’s loose thoughts. The problem is that those are not fever dream-like, high octane thoughts like in FLCL, no, these are the most boring thoughts one can have. Alfred Hitchcock is attributed to the quote “Movie is life, with all the boring parts cut out”. This show is the exact inverse of that. It’s all the fun parts cut out. Before we start I would like to explain something. I will be talking about “plot” and “story”. Many people use these terms interchangeably. I’m not one of those people, so to make sure everyone is on the same page… PLOT is the surface-level events. What, when, where, how and why (externally) things are happening. STORY is why (internally) things are happening and what internally happens to the character during the plot. I’ll start with this – I can’t stand Kunon. He’s probably in the TOP 5 of the most annoying, obnoxious, boring and irritating main characters I have ever seen. That’s saying something judging by what kind of shitshows I sometimes subject myself to. Not only that, he makes very little sense. In episode one it’s stated that his goal is to create new eyes for himself. Ok, that sounded awesome. An actual good idea. A blind person wants to use magic to grant himself sight. I liked it. Until I didn’t. In the same episode he gains the ability to perceive colors, shapes, read books (no, not specially written books, normal books, just ink on paper), move safely in his surroundings, practically everything that he would use eyes for. So why even bother? He didn’t want to do this because he’s curious if it’s possible. He didn’t want to create them for the benefit of others in similar situations. Not even close. He wanted to do this because he wanted to see. Well… he does. Without eyes. We don’t get one scene where his lack of traditional sight is an inconvenience to him, he can do everything, and even more, that a person with functioning eyes can. There is no real reason for him to do anything. If his goal was to be able to see… he achieved it in episode 1. It’s not like he needs eyeballs per se. He does have them. Not working as intended but they are there. It’s not like he’s obsessed with the idea anyway. He forgot about it until in episode 6 his master mentioned it. The worst offender? In episode 7 he states that he hates himself, that he can’t do anything on his own and is troubling others. We see none of that in the entire show. Well… apart from one scene in the first episode that lasts less than a minute. It’s like the writer forgot what his goal with this character was and just winged everything. So what is the damn point? One thing. All I need is one thing he wants, or needs traditional sight, to achieve and I would be fine (not really but it wouldn’t pain me as much) with most of the other bullshit involving him. And there is a lot, A LOT, of bullshit involving him. I’m really surprised this isn’t an isekai. This level of the whole world bending over backwards, like a cheap whore for the, is usually reserved for MCs of isekais. No matter what Kunon does, it’s seen as something unique, clever or amazing. Despite most of it being rather basic, judging but the scares laws of the world we are given. Most of those things relate to magic but it doesn’t present Kunon as smart, it shows the rest of the world as idiots. You are telling me that not one person, who uses water magic, thought of making a water bed before? Not one? Seriously? I can almost believe that people didn’t think of changing the texture of water spells because they might not notice it in such a way a blind person would, but that is still a stretch because it would imply that there are no blind mages (or maybe even people at all) in this world. Why? You created a blind character and put him in a world where disabilities don’t exist? Why? How? If there is a cure for all disabilities? If yes, why didn’t it work on Kunon? If there is no cure for disabilities then why no one who uses light magic (the only that can heal apparently) didn’t experiment with it? It strongly supports my theory that there are no disabled people, other than those born with “hero scars” (for some reason, in this world losing limbs, organs or having mental problems are hereditary). Even then, some people are born with those “scars” and not one person thought that maybe, just maybe having spells, magic tools or other means, to help them out would be a nice thing to do? Or even profitable? Those kinds of people, depending on their impairment, would be willing to spend a lot of cash… just saying. It’s not an organic world. It’s just a stage where Kunon can be amazing and think of things no one else can, even if those things would be easy to think of, even for a person with room temperature IQ. This show uses a magic system so soft even a metric ton of viagra would do nothing to it. We don’t get any sort of explanation on how magic works, except that you need a crest for it, you are born (or not) with one and the rank of that crest determines your max mana. That’s it. Nothing more. Logically speaking people should be able to pull out new spells out of their asses on an everyday basis, but because this show was written by someone who probably never read anything good in their life, that privilege is reserved for our MC. Because of course it is. We wouldn’t want to have an interesting, organic world that makes any sort of sense. That would be silly, what do you think this is? A good show? In the second half of the show Kunon manages to create himself a magical, artificial eye. Something he clearly doesn’t need but let’s roll with it. It works but not perfectly. He sees things other people can’t and we never get an explanation why, or even what are those things. This could have been a jumping point to a new challenge for him. Something to sink his teeth into and prove to everyone that… yeah right. If you thought that the writer has an ability to think in ways other than unfunny jokes and Gary Stu (the male Mary Sue) logic then I feel sorry for you. You clearly have taste in story telling and are stuck watching this crap.No. Kunon doesn’t bother with tweaking his spell for the rest of the show. He uses that eye and just rolls with whatever he sees, treating those things like some sort of information about people. Despite not having anything to confirm that. Those could be just hallucinations. They are probably not, judging how special and unique the writer wants Kunon to be, but I can dream that this show would get a competent writer, can’t I? Now… let none say I only see negatives. I actually think the story idea is good. Very good even. A story about a blind kid who wants to be independent and able to make something of himself. That is a genuinely good idea. One of the best ones I saw in quite some time to be honest. It uses a character that has a significant flaw to be overcome, since the world doesn’t seem to have anything to help people who don’t have fully functioning eyes. The problem is the plot. It’s garbage. Despite having a serious handicap we mainly see Kunon being almost perfect at everything he does. He turns out to be a gifted student of magic to the point his teacher, probably inhaling an unholy amount of ashwagandha just to be able to not panic after lessons with him, thought of herself as inept. He becomes independent from a full time caretaker moments after deciding to create himself a pair of eyes, he becomes the student of one of the most skilled mages in the region without trying and even turns most of magic school into his fans with little to no problems. Who …

having a relatively strong opening sequence, the show quickly falls into a cycle of repeat jokes that fail the land. while overall being mildly enjoyable, its hard to say it was anything but a waste of time. every problem the character has is solved in the first six episodes, and the rest of the show is a clown show of him demonstrating that as the main character, he is the only one who knows anything about magic. probably the largest sin is how the main character only ever uses two spells, and even in his main character way of making the most of those spells, he still generally only uses 4 or so 'compound spells' through the show. there is no villain, there is no challenge, there is no moment of weakness, there is no personal loss. this is the worst kind of slice of life wearing the skin of shonen fantasy. who would watch this show? people who like anime regardless of content. who should avoid this show? people who like shows with elements of storytelling
Chandra1337
The show starts off decently, however it soon devolves into a fairly bland story about a mage who can't see, who overcomes this in like the couple episodes, but also at the same time somehow doesn't and spends half the series learning how to see, even though it appears that he's been able to see since like episode 2 or 3 or so. The show tends to get worse as the episodes go on, getting rather ridiculous in episode 12 where he suddenly starts hitting on every female and basically ignoring all guys - which is something that wasn't really touched on until this moment. Overall, the story is your typical trope of "MC is stupidly overpowered for no apparent reason" anime. Don't bother.
Rigga
The story is very repetitive and plain. The main character is supposedly an honest gentleman, but is annoying in his portrayal, which is mostly just him being a philanderer and "good sexist," treating women preferentially to the annoyance and frustration of almost everyone in the story. Other than that, it is a very milktoast fantasy magic story. The show is a bit disappointing in that the premise was interesting, however it abandoned many of the traits that would have made his portrayal representative and relatable for those with disabilities. Of course, the name says it all, so really it should be expected, however it's still dissapointing that a lot of those struggles are resolved so quickly. They even manage to do some interesting things with some of the characters like the maid and the relationships Kunon has with his superiors. But with the maid they try to pull a serious shift but it ends up as a fake out (not technically a fake out but like if you do watch it you'll realize they end up just maintaining the status quo) and his superiors are sort of just generic fair. Overall, the show is mediocre at best and a disappointing exercise in speedrunning a potentially interesting character premise towards a generic and flat caricature of the genre as a whole. I wouldn't recommend it unless you really enjoy these kinds of fantasy stories for the fantasy setting itself. It's just average in many ways and fails in many of the ways you would demand a story to succeed in.

TLDR - Skip this. A good first half is thrown away by a terrible second half. Kunon is, centrally, a comedy with dramatic elements. It has a somewhat unique setup and odd characters. This leads to the first half being really surprisingly good with a heartfelt change in arc which made me tear up, as we say goodbye to the old setup and hello to the new one. However, I can only assume the second half was written by someone else as all characters are 4-koma comedy archetypes with no depth and Kunon himself becomes extremely irritating. This anime starts off by doing a great job of showing us the full character of Kunon. He's isolated due to his blindness and quite pessimistic, but he comes out of his shell thanks to those around him and gets a ray of home from his magic tutor. All good, most of the first half goes on this journey and is really, really enjoyable. There are some particularly beautiful scenes here. This all ends with him going off to school and it's heartfelt and emotional and really well written. I'm skipping some particularly great scenes so I don't spoil them. Then the second half starts. Kunon is introduced to new people and has suddenly become a shameless flirt (despite his fiance being worried he'll leave her) and almost harasses women. This gets ridiculous and really seems to come out of nowhere. Gone is the depth. His supporting cast are all underachievers who need his brilliance to succeed. Kunon is the most brilliant magician ever. It's idiotic.

Majutsushi Kunon wa Mieteiru starts with a genuinely good idea: a blind boy who uses water magic as his own sensory system, with a precision and depth no generalist mage can match. That premise has real weight. The problem is the anime treats it as a launching pad and then builds something far more generic on top. The first half is a slice-of-life romance with decent rhythm. The second half, once the magic academy arrives, drops almost everything it had built before — shelves the more interesting characters, abandons the relationship dynamics — and falls into standard power fantasy: new place, better than everyone, wins everyone over, done. Conflicts resolve in one episode or less. Episode 12 literally starts and ends in the same place. Worth it if you watch week to week with low expectations and a free Sunday. If you pick it up to binge looking for substance, you'll probably drop it halfway. 6/10
