These movies are for the true Girls und Panzer fans who have got the Anzio school anthem as their ringtone. Have you watched Girls und Panzer and ever had any of the following thoughts? - I wish there was more Anzio and Anchovy. - I wish every episode was a swimsuit episode. - I wish characters whom I have barely previously thought about such as the judges or Arisu's mom got a ton more screentime. - I wish all the characters wore the uniforms from other schools in superelite covert spying operations. - I wish every episode was filled with unpredictable random nonsense. - I wish the focus of the anime was spread so wide that even schools I have forgotten about like the Spanish or Australian schools get segments. If you've answered yes to one or more of those statements then this is the anime for you! Peak comedy with the girls we know and love. Cherish your Mini Pekoe and squish the cheeks of Mini Rosehip. If you watch this anime and give it a high score then you too can become Anzio's Duce. In all seriousness this is an amazingly funny comedy spin off of a franchise that I love deeply. I truly appreciate the depth and breadth of it as it covers less popular characters with lots of loving fun screentime and scenarios. I am glad that GuP is a big and popular enough franchise to support a purely comedy focused spin-off like this and it makes me wish other series could get this level of love and attention.

Girls und Panzer: Motto Love Love Sakusen desu! is a solid showcase of hilarious comedic side stories to sate our GuP hunger in between movie installments. While Mizushima is focused on finishing up the action-heavy core of this franchise, Masami Shimoda has stepped in with his decades of industry experience to pump out an exceptionally well-paced and constant stream of short comedic vignettes that consistently got at least a couple laughs out of me with each new scenario. This shotgun approach also allows for a wider and deeper exploration of the massive ancillary cast that has populated this franchise over the past decade and a half, with the half dozen or so different sensha-do teams getting plenty of screen time across their wide swathes of members, though there are still a few subjects that come out a bit repetitive. It also looks just as solid as the main series, though with most of its efforts this time put into more comedic-centric moments. Whether it’s the wide variety of art styles and visual references scattered throughout each episode or the plethora of exaggerated and impacting cuts of humorous facial expressions and slapstick, this one turned out to be much more of a treat for the eyes than I was expecting. It’s also probably the most fan service-heavy entry of GuP so far. It’s not particularly incredible fan service, but it is at the very least serviceable in conveying how cute these designs are. If you’ve been craving more GuP to tide you over before the next movie comes out, this is more than sufficient to keep you satisfied.
