Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You

Look, I know this show is totally male age gap fantasy, but the main couple is so cute together that I can't help but love it. And yes, I see plain as day that it's a trap for introverted 40-something male anime fans, but I don't care because it's executed so damn well. I crave escapism and Yamada-chan doth provide. After laboring through the endless droves of high-school-centric romance animes, shows like this that focus on older chararcters in the workplace are always refreshing to me. Even better is the fact that even though you could call this a romcom, it doesn't dwell in cheap hacky comedy (except the Obata episode. The Obata episode sucks.) and really does the romance part right. It doesn't tell you how to feel as much as it just lets you come along for the ride. The male protaganist Sasaki is the biggest golden retriever character ever. The show even directly says so. Yet, he manages to do exactly the right thing at exactly the right time whenever it's needed. It really hammers home the chemistry between the wise older man and the playfulness of the younger woman that works so well in this series. I think one of the things that makes this show great is that it cuts out everything in the character's lives that isn't important. The editing is superb. You get a few of Sasaki's work dilemmas, and a rare shot of Yamada outside of the supermarket, but other than that it's all just focused on their conversations and what they're feeling in the moment. Absolutely nothing is filler. Many of the side characters barely get developed, but it feels very purposeful and not flawed at all. The background characters don't even get the luxury of having eyes. I did think it was odd that they switched out the super catchy ending theme Night Dancer that was used in the mini-episodes for a still catchy but much less so song from Imase for the full episodes. I can only assume it was a push by Imase's label. The opening theme I found quite skippable aside from the obligatory first and last episode where I make a ritual of never skipping anything. The show's attitudes surrounding smoking and health are pretty hilariously at points. I won't spoil it, but there's an episode around mid-season that just has the most ass-backwards way of looking at one's health that it should be given some ridicule. But I suppose whatever's clever when it keeps you from having to stop talking to the cute girl who's half your age. Also, waking up before dawn just to purposefully smoke in the freezing cold is peak health. I'd like to talk about the ending more but it would wind up being spoiler territory. I just know that while it wasn't what I was expecting, it still felt good in it's own way. I think they were just being careful not to wreck anything and I would say they achieved that gracefully. Anyways, this show is straight up adorable. Watching Sasaki and Yamada slowly losing the battle of playing dodgeball with their feelings is completely addictive. You may ask yourself things like "Why doesn't a super attractive girl like Yamada have tons of other people in her life?" but just ignore those silly rational thoughts and have fun watching this banger of a series for what it is: a great romantic comedy. If this doesn't get another season I might die inside. 9/10

Based on an interesting misunderstanding by the MC about two sides of the same girl being actually different people, it creates a lot of interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes profound moments and conversations. It's a super wholesome idea and for a while works quite well. However it gets old fast. It would've been worth a 9 or 10 if it were resolved in a timely manner, like at the season end, not exploited and milked forever. However according to a brief google search (so take it with the adequate amount of grains of salt) the author has no intention to stop milking the same thing at least for what's enough for two more seasons (if they even get approved), or maybe literally forever. Even that might be fine if consumed casually with an occasional episode or a chapter here and there when you've already forgotten how long it's been going and just want a small fix of wholesomeness instead of looking for progress. For me however, especially in anime format which I usually binge-watch, the lack of development - or worse, the author's lack of intention for development - is a deal breaker and lowers my evaluation significantly.

This series is basically comfort food in anime form. Yani-Suu is wholesome, relaxing, and incredibly easy to spend time with, mostly because Yamada and Sasaki are so enjoyable together. There's no need for constant drama when you can just watch them talk, tease each other, and enjoy each other's company. I really like both of them, with Yamada's playful personality working especially well against Sasaki's innocent and clueless nature. I also appreciate how simple the series is. It doesn't need a massive cast or complicated plot when these two are written well enough to carry everything themselves. The adult romance also gives it a refreshing change from the usual school setting, while the slow pacing and slice-of-life atmosphere suit it perfectly. I'm really excited to see how their relationship continues to develop.

An anime based on a slice of life manga about doing something as mundane as smoking behind the supermarket. That's it. That is both the title and its premise. There is just something relatable about a middle-aged protagonist wrung daily by corporate machinery and getting his solace from a welcoming and encouraging smile of a young cashier at the register of the supermarket near his apartment. The adaptation is done so well, adding new angles and approaches beyond the static approach on a manga page. This is how manga should be adapted, and rather than just slavishly following the panels as storyboards. Though it's dangerously making smoking cool again, there's just a great vibe in a friendship budding into a slow burn romance. This is one of my favorites of the Summer 2026 season.

(Spanish review on my list) I don't smoke, but I'm actually starting to feel the urge to have a cigarette. Jokes aside... this is an anime for the 9-to-5 crowd, you know? For those of us with grueling, routine-filled days packed with problems—people who seek out those sporadic moments of peace that recharge our batteries. For me, it’s about spending the weekend watching anime and playing video games—finally getting away from the phone that dominates my workday. For our protagonists, it’s about occasionally smoking a cigarette or two after a grocery run or after work... And that’s really it... it’s about relating to the characters and unwinding with them when they catch a breather (even if it’s a smoke break) after a long day... Yes, there are romantic elements, and yes, there’s a significant age gap—but come on, everyone involved (both in the show and in real life) is an adult who understands how the world works. Once you reach a certain age and take on specific responsibilities, the people around you naturally span all sorts of ages... And again, the series handles this maturely; the main focus isn't the romance—it’s just about breathing, relaxing, and forgetting daily stress while chatting about trivial things with people you know.

It is important to say that I just left uni, leaving behind friends, and now trying to make new friends, and as they did in the anime, the main characters basically randomly meet in person, that’s why I loved this anime so much. The story was episodic with the story connecting episode to episode; with elements from pervious episodes becoming important in the following episodes. The episodes are very simplistic and predictable but not rushed. I would describe the episode as laid back and something that can be watched in any mood. This fits in the theme in Love Status Quo, the characters remember what happened in the pervious episodes is the strongest point of the story for me, just feel like humans that grow overtime. The characters have flaws and that what makes it perfect, but the flaws mainly focused on the main characters. the ending is open-ended and I would like to see more. I would like to see more of the two main characters, some time is focused on the side characters, but the way the show is set up, is too put attention to the main characters, and the side characters are there to help with that. I would say the art is simple and realistic, but at types breaks from the mould, but when the characters think of something it goes into a Chebbi type of art and that to me is the most well done. When the characters get angry, they get dark shadows under their eyes; which is well done and makes it memorable. Which showed both of the characters emotions. I haven’t read the manga, and I not going to in case it ruins the show for me, and I don’t feel that you need as I said before, it is a laid-back show for the whole show. This might sound a bit weird, but I never paid that much attention to the background, because I was looking at actions that the characters made which was smoothly done. I think that background sounds is the main thing that is lacking, but I never really notice it when watching the show; however, the Japanese’s VA did such a good job and fitted their role, allowed me to not notice it. But certain sounds effects like lighter, and then beathing after they smoke just adds to story that these are just too friends that are getting closer ever time they smoke together. Overall, the main sound that I noticed was the lighter. I didn’t skip the OP or ED, but I wouldn’t listen to it on repeat. However, I was so interested into the characters and the animation of what the characters was doing in the OP, I never noticed the song. To end overall, I think I fell in love with this anime because of the point of the life right now, a bit lost and trying to make new friends.

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is just about as relaxing of a watch you can find when it comes to anime, the vibes are immaculate. It's quite the slow burn romance, however I never feel like it's taking too long to progress anywhere. I'm going to need a season 2 ASAP! Art Style/Character Designs - 9 Animation - 8 Themes/Romance - 9 Characters - 9.5 Story - 8.5 Comedy - 8.5 Music/OP/ED - 9 Enjoyment - 9 For starters I think the visuals are awesome. The art style is pretty unique and I love the character designs. I think Tayama's style is super cool, I always look forward to seeing her different outfits. Even Sasaki has some pretty nice outfits despite being unc status. The animation is also pretty well done, but as I always say I don't find animation for slice of life and romance series to be all that important, however I will always appreciate when it's done well. When it comes to the themes, I don't really connect with the smoking side of things since I don't smoke, however I do love the way it sets up the environment and pushes the 2 main characters together. Their romance is a slow burn as I mentioned, but it does progress very naturally and at a good pace to where it doesn't feel like it's dragging on too long or moving too quickly. Also considering there's quite a big age gap between Sasaki and Tayama I truly appreciate that it never comes across as creepy. And since I'm on the topic of characters I think that's the strongest part of this anime. The dynamic between Sasaki and Tayama or Yamada is great. While yes Sasaki is quite dense for not immediately realizing Tayama and Yamada are the same person, I can't exactly blame him since she actively plays into the idea that they're 2 different people. I do think it makes for good comedic moments between them and it also makes me anticipate the reveal whenever it ends up happening. The side characters are great as well, every time a new one was introduced I ended up loving them. You can guarantee some great comedy whether its Gotou, Suzuki, Maezawa or Obata who shows up. I feel like they just fit the series so well. I am also very fond of the idea that we might get a romance side plot between Gotou and Obata. As for the music, you got ZUTOMAYO and imase cooking for the opening an ending so no complaints there. When it comes to the music throughout the show, it's really what ties everything together and makes it such a chill watch. Sets the tone beautifully and just overall subtly adds so much to the series. All in all, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is really a must watch for anyone who enjoys a chill romance or slice of life series. It's easily a solid 9/10 for me, I really hope we get a season 2, and if not I may have to pick up the manga.

Might be one of the best new anime this season for me. A slow burn slice of life romance that you’re supposed to enjoy slowly. It's like a wine you enjoy slowly and the more you consume it, the more you like it. The story isn't trying to rush the romance. It’s mainly about two people slowly creating a bond, getting comfortable with each other, understanding one another and eventually becoming an important part of each other's lives. And man the chemistry between them is amazing. And yes, I completely understand why some people might think Sasaki is acting like a child for his age. Honestly, I think that’s what helps his character work. He's a bit awkward emotionally and doesn't always know how to handle himself and seeing him gradually open up makes his relationship with Yamada feel more real. And Yamada... I just love her. The way she switches between her two personalities is cute and funny and seeing her act differently with Sasaki depending on which side she shows really adds so much charm to their relationship. The animation fits the anime perfectly. It has this cozy, warm, relaxed feeling that matches the slice of life atmosphere. Nothing feels unnecessarily flashy everything is focused on creating that comfortable mood. The music and sound design are amazing too. They make the quiet moments feel even more intimate especially when the series lets silence and small sounds carry the scene. And man, both the opening and ending songs are absolute bangers Overall this is the type of romance that doesn't need a lot of drama to keep you interested. It takes its time. It leaves room to breathe for the characters and you genuinely care about their relationship. Beautiful, Cozy, Funny and Just Satisfying. 🚬🚬🚬

"Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You" is a slice-of-life subtext romance starring Yamada and Sasaki. Both are very much overworked workers for their company. Supermarket and office work, respectively. The aim of the story is to show what a bond of spending time together can evolve. Here the way they hang out is smoking. Granted it doesn't really have to be smoking. Though smoking does make it work because it is a very casual activity where you can easily talk. The one humorous thing about this relationship is Sasaki is much more of a "fan" of Yamada at work. So she ends up calling herself Tayama around him. Sasaki is quite dense, but Yamada's true personality being so polar opposite from her work personality actually makes it work. A lot of the time she ends up teasing Sasaki, but the teasing goes both ways even though Sasaki does it unintentional. Still over the course of the show you can feel the two of them become close together. The relationship becomes significant for both of them, but there is no real way you would define it. It's not lovers, not friendship, but more than just acquaintances. More proof of how much bonding and spending time as people can help us in different ways. Sasaki in pushing himself when he needs to and for Yamada having a comfort spot. One huge thing for this show's favor is how the main duo acts like adults. Unlike a lot of anime where it is very troupy both Sasaki and Yamada acts like adults. Granted Sasaki at times can feel overconsiderate. Side casts is really solid and they play off the main duo well. Production-wise,it is very solid. It's nothing remarkable, but it's one of the better works from Asahi Production. If you are a big fan of comfort and slice-of-life type shows then this is one you immensely will like.

Anime Review: Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari A simple story about friendship, loneliness, and finding someone who understands you. Spoiler Warning: This review is completely spoiler-free. It only talks about the main idea, characters, and feelings of the first season. It does not reveal any important story events or future developments. Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari is a very good anime, and I highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy romance and stories about human feelings. However, this anime is a little different from many other romance anime. It does not focus only on love, kisses, or romantic moments. Instead, it shows how two people can become close and support each other, even when they know very little about each other's lives. The story is about a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s. They meet at a supermarket, where one is a customer and the other is a worker. Slowly, they become friends and start spending time together behind the supermarket while smoking. The woman has two different sides to her personality. At work, she is calm, kind, and quiet. Outside work, she is much more energetic and loud. She keeps her real identity hidden from the man, which adds an interesting part to their relationship. But what makes this anime special is not just the characters or their age difference. It is the way they make each other's lives better. Both of them live away from their hometowns and face the problems of everyday life. Work can be stressful, and living alone can sometimes feel lonely. They may not know everything about each other's personal lives, but they can still talk freely, share their feelings, and listen to each other. Sometimes, you do not need someone to solve all your problems. You just need someone who will listen to you without making you feel bad. Someone who helps you feel calm when you are tired, makes you smile when you are unhappy, and gives you a reason to feel better after a difficult day. This anime shows that kind of connection very well. Their relationship grows slowly. They go from being strangers to becoming friends, and then to becoming people who can trust and support each other. They do not need to share every detail of their lives to understand each other's feelings. I also like that this story does not make every moment about romance. It shows that a man and a woman can have a meaningful connection without immediately needing to fall in love. Friendship, trust, care, and emotional support can also make two people very important to each other. Sometimes, the best part of meeting someone is not falling in love with them. It is finding someone with whom you can be yourself. Someone who listens to your thoughts, understands your feelings, and makes the world feel a little less lonely. Someone who may have started as a complete stranger but slowly becomes a person you look forward to meeting. That is one of the most beautiful things about this anime. I do not know what will happen to their relationship in the future because I have only watched the anime and have not read the manga. Maybe their friendship will become romantic, or perhaps their connection will grow in another way. I cannot say for sure. But, at least in the first season, their growing friendship is already something worth watching. My Final Thoughts If you are tired of watching anime with the same romantic plots, too much drama, or stories that always need big events to keep your attention, I recommend giving this anime a try. It feels close to real life. It shows adults dealing with work stress, loneliness, and the need for someone who understands them. The story does not need constant drama to make their relationship meaningful. Sometimes, we spend so much time working and dealing with our responsibilities that we forget how important it is to have someone to talk to. Someone outside our family or workplace who can listen to us and help us feel better. Even a short conversation with the right person can make a difficult day feel easier. Sometimes, just knowing that someone is there for you is enough. You do not always need a romantic relationship to feel close to someone. Sometimes, friendship and emotional support can bring the same kind of comfort and happiness that we need in life. That is why I think this anime deserves a chance. It is a warm, simple, and meaningful story about two people who slowly become important to each other. My recommendation: If you enjoy stories about friendship, romance, everyday life, and human emotions, give Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari a try. You may find something special in its simple story and quiet moments.

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is an anime, particularly for those who are somewhat or well into their careers, that will feel relatable and leave you with a sense of hope. It gives perspective that even when things feel gloomy and the job, hours, or life suck, you can still find moments that brighten up the day. The little things still matter and make a difference, and you can find those moments anywhere. The story is slow-moving, has no major plot points or progression, and the characters are not that deep—but that is what makes it good and drives the message home. Sasaki is a salaryman who works a demanding job, leaving him to feel lonely because he doesn't have much time for his personal life. Tayama/Yamada is a young adult who works as a cashier at the supermarket Saskai goes to. Despite it not being the most interesting or fulfilling role, she still loves what she does. Together they break up the mundane parts of life and enjoy eachother's company and conversation over a cigarette. Over time, they develop a deep friendship (or perhaps more?) and help each other grow as they work through the tough moments of life. The artwork is also good and helps show the characters' emotions very well. This is a great watch if you're looking for a slice of life that you can actually see yourself in, or could see someone else in.

What a lovely series, man. This one really resonates with me. Like, two adults sitting down in the back of a supermarket, ranting about their problems. How could that be wrong? How did I find this? I read it on MangaUP! Before that, I think I got it recommended by a short video from Kito-senpai on YouTube. Appealing (Why did I get into the anime?) How could I not? I'm still pretty new to working. It felt relatable to me, and it hit close to home. Platform Netflix (with their terrible scheduling), Disney+, dAnime Store & TELASA (for Japan only), and Crunchyroll. The review; Plot/Story Two adults ranting about their lives while smoking. That's literally the premise. No big drama, no huge romance plot. Just a slice-of-life story about a virgin office man and a supermarket clerk. It was so heartwarming to watch the two help each other out because Sasaki was an experienced worker, while Yamada/Tayama was a coming-of-age supermarket clerk. It reminded me so much of a story from Webtoon Indonesia called SMAS'D. While the plot itself and setting were different, the concept is similar. SMAS'D is a slice-of-life story about an elementary boy and a high school boy waiting for the bus, and they always banter about how others have it better or worse. But that's the thing: that banter actually helps them each to better their lives. Character I don't really want to talk about characters that much since they grow from episode to episode. Like, you have to be there to experience it; you know what I mean? The side characters are kind of forgettable, except the supermarket manager, Gotou. OST/SFX I heard that the ending theme song was actually a pre-existing song. To that I say, cool! I have never heard the song before, and now I know. It's kind of cool to know that the song and artist get more love from overseas. They deserve it! OP was amazing and calming. OST and SFX were standard. Two Thumbs Up! Animation Oh, boy. Asahi, we meet again. The last time I watched something from you was... the hmm... Yeah, the Gushing Magical Girl. You upgraded your animation a bit, didn't ya? Heck, I also like Dara of Reiwa animation. Love to see it! VA Two Thumbs Up! The conclusion; Enjoyable Relatable for sure. I enjoy watching it every week. Worthable I can't say it was worth it. You see, this depends on where you are in life. I can relate because I am at the working stage. I'm new to this field, and I needed this to cheer me up. Delivery Decent. Even the animation. I was quite surprised. OG Sauce I'll continue the read now. Can't wait for more of Sasaki and Yamada. Overall 9/10 A solid recommendation. You should watch it, definitely!

Semi good anime that cheers you a little bit. It's bit of a freash breath of air in anime industry today to be had in semi long time. I think today it's hard to find lot of good series on any field so it was nice to find something i like. Theres lot of mainstream or not unique productions so it's impossible to watch lot of stuff even ironically for me today. The show explores the ridiculous theme's of current day social life and how hard its to form relationships in a way. It also expores the modern day focus on what is considered to be these "small moments" even though it never says these things out loud. Yes in a way it just starts and you hop into in like middle of the story. It's basic on outside, seems just like modern-day "boring life". A office worker who smokes tobacco who meets a cashier at shop. It's relationship anime with slice of life? If i would say for the genre. Well the production or show is made very well and not boring. Characters are dynamic, well you could have a little bit more persona I guess but maybe later on in manga it expands. Though simple can be okay. In anyway it's idea is i guess is to be something you can watch comfortably and turn your brains off a little. I really like a lot about the romance also. Not saying more about that. You also get some laughs maybe? Yes i would sum it up to be up in my standards and like solid 8.8 rating probably. I would strongly recomend, especially if you feel overwhelmed.

Completed - 7.50 This is the kind of series anime needs more of—the romance landscape leans far too hard on coming-of-age teen stories, with hardly any room left over for anything more grown-up. Though, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You tries to fill that gap; it has no interest in being flashy or eventful, settling instead for a calm, therapeutic slice-of-life experience, carrying the small responsibilities of everyday life alongside a quiet appreciation for the relationships found along the way. That said, a few things bothered me, predominantly how little the show does with the Yamada / Tayama split as anything beyond a slow-burn misunderstanding; there's real thematic weight sitting right there—Sasaki idolising one version of her while treating the other with easy familiarity, without ever consciously connecting the two—and the series is content to let that sit in the background instead of asking for more. Even so, I can't recall another series that's kept me this captivated doing so little—just two people, talking, about nothing in particular. Much of that comes down to the tone—it knows exactly what it’s doing, weaving its comedy through the quieter loneliness underneath burnout, rather than any tidy work-life balance. At its core, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is simply a series about the careful understanding that grows between two people who start out worlds apart.

Although I did have pretty high expectations for this anime, I was still surprised to see how good it actually was because it feels like most romances are usually rated very high, but pretty bad. I can say pretty easily that this anime is as good as people make it out to be, I really enjoy it It's got a pretty simple premise of two people smoking behind a supermarket, but their dynamic together works so well. There wasn’t a moment where I was bored of them; they were funny, they felt real, and it feels like real effort was put into developing them. The humor was there as well and was stupidly funny, like when Sasaki gets flustered and blurts out he’s going through menopause. I'm also a big fan of the art style; it's pleasing to look at and isn’t the typical romcom bs. I enjoyed it so much I sped through the episodes without even realizing. I'll probably pick up the manga since that was also recommended to me Overall, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You was a very enjoyable series that honestly felt like a breath of fresh air. It felt like something that took real effort, unlike a lot of stuff coming out right now, Klutz n Skirt, for example, but I highly recommend this series; I think most people will like it. 8/10

Never thought anime about two heavy smoker can create a peaceful and relaxing story haha This definitely an iyashikei anime or "healing" anime as there's so little conflict or drama and the story tend to be relaxing and calming. Yamada and Sasaki bonding together by smoking behind the supermarket together and they just spent the time by talking about works and life and anything on their minds. And honestly their relationship is so interesting to see the development. The backstory of Yamada and Sasaki also add layer to their character. And other character also interesting (and funny) to watch. This anime feel refreshing eventho smoking was a big highlight of the story haha Graphics were decent, and in some eps they have good score. Overall a good iyashikei anime to watch if u need some laid back anime

Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You is the ultimate comfort anime. When picking up this anime for the first time, it instantly felt like a breath of fresh air. One thing that gets tiresome for me is the massive amount of anime that are set in high school, especially when it comes to romance anime. Having an adult cast alongside other mature themes like smoking and the stresses of work life really help set this anime apart from the rest to make it stand out. Some might complain about how dense the main character Sasaki is, but to me it doesn't really seem like something negative about this anime. That is even coming from someone who hates the dense MC trope. For some reason it just really works with this anime. This is an anime that is short and sweet, and was nothing but an enjoyable watch. I hope season two gets announced soon, and I also see myself picking up the manga.

As for my take on "Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari", it’s a pretty enjoyable anime with elements of romance and comedy. It doesn't have a complex plot, instead, it’s the kind of show that’s great for casual viewing (personally, I like watching it after Yani Neko XD). Most episodes focused on the main characters, Sasaki and Yamada, who still remain unaware of each other's true identities (at this stage of the anime). An exception was the episode featuring Obata, who got a lot of screen time for a supporting character. The art style, animation, and music were all really good, too. So, I’m giving it a 9/10. I’m looking forward to another season if it happens, since the manga is still ongoing.

Really love it. All parties involved in this matter deserve appreciation. The atmosphere is very relaxed, easy to follow, and is the perfect addition to welcome the weekend evening after a week of work. The Voice Acting oh dude Hoshiki and Satou really did a great job bring the once manga panel characters come to life with their performances. The style also i really like, they did really a good job. Just a little advise here, do not try to watch it on one go but 1-4eps/day. Anime like this i think is best to be chew slowly rarely watch anime anymore so If not for twitter i will never find this anime.

Following two smokers that get to know each other, a slow burn centered around a practice that barely feels socially relevant anymore. The characters ages support their dynamic and give some fuel for the interactions they have. It's a fresh feeling perspective overall. The smoking theme allows for natural feeling flow for people that are being intentful with their words and interactions, taking a drag and giving themselves a minute when they need to. Though, the trope of a mischievous girl teasing a hyper reactive guy just feels a little off when the guy is a businessman in his 40s.. Gap moe? The context that makes the show seem sort of odd is also what really makes it feel more fun and engaging than the 30 other shows that have the same premise, but have characters you've seen over and over again. The characters genuinely seem to get to know each other and leave an impact on each others lives. The main characters refusal to go out of their way to get any closer outside of their smoking sessions keeps the interactions consistent with the theme of the show, and prevents it from getting diluted with the more common tropes revolving two people getting to know each other. This show knows exactly what it wants to be and does a good job with it.
