Magnum Opus Every author has one. Some authors, like Naoki Urasawa, are lucky and skilled enough to write something that great and even outdo themselves several times. But most authors end up as one-hit wonders, only “remembered” for one work before slowly but surely fading into obscurity. Yousuke Kaneda, the creator of this anime, is also someone who already wrote a magnum opus with Boarding School Juliet. He is lucky, because that was only his third work, yet it already became his breakthrough. Even so, if we call it his magnum opus, by current standards it is just a slightly above-average romcom-drama anime that got its popularity because it appeared at the right place and the right time. Fast forward to 2026, and another one of his works got adapted. Boy, if he keeps writing like this, he is going to fall into obscurity real fucking soon. First of all, this anime half-asses almost everything. The comedy mostly comes from characters getting hurt or ending up in ridiculous situations. The action, if you can even call it that, is just a flashier version of Harry Potter-style magic combat. And the magic system is boring as fuck. I have watched an isekai with a pig as the MC that has a better and more interesting magic system than this, and that is a huge letdown because this anime is supposed to have magic at its core. The animation can look pretty good at times, but then the quality suddenly drops downhill, and the supposedly pretty characters start looking derpy as hell. Another thing about this anime is the writing. It feels like Yousuke Kaneda does not even know who his target audience is. I honestly have a hard time figuring out who this anime was made for. Like I said, the magic and action are very boring. The drama and comedy are also just okay at best, and you can clearly see that he is also trying to lean back into his previous work by making hints that this might be a romcom as well. But in Boarding School Juliet, it was obvious from the beginning that it wanted to be a romcom, even just by looking at the MC. Here, the MC spends most of his screentime as a stupid-ass black cat that sounds like a femboy who got his ass railed every Sunday. I do not know why the fuck he decided to make Claude such an annoying black cat who loves getting his ass kissed. This is also supposed to be the comedy, by the way. They even show his chocolate starfish and two cat balls in one scene. But despite all those bad things, this anime still does one thing right, the waifus. Every heroine in this anime is pretty and unique in her own way. Yousuke Kaneda might have fucked up a few things that made people love his previous work, but he made sure to keep this part intact. They are not as good as the girls from his previous work, but they are still good. It also has fanservice, although not much. Most of it is just panty shots, but hey, do not expect too much from anime like this. Overall, this is just a very basic anime that is mediocre at best in almost every aspect. It has great heroines, but these days that alone cannot save an anime. It might have gotten more attention if it had aired 7 or 8 years ago, but right now, it is just going to stay stuck as seasonal filler, unless you are a new anime watcher, you can just skip this one and watch Boarding School Juliet if you haven't watch it.

I started 'The Black Cat and the Witch' expecting a simple fantasy story, and that's pretty much what I got. The story and characters are good enough to keep things interesting, even if they aren't anything particularly special or groundbreaking. The comedy was probably my favorite part. Some jokes landed better than others, but overall it kept the series fun and entertaining. The character interactions were enjoyable, and I never really felt bored while watching. One thing I should mention is the infamous scene in the first episode. I know some people might drop the anime immediately because of the butt-kiss joke, but that scene doesn't really represent the whole series. It's mostly played for comedy, and if you can get past it, the rest of the anime is fairly different in tone. This isn't a masterpiece, and I wouldn't call it a must-watch. But if you're looking for a light fantasy anime with some funny moments and a decent cast, it's worth giving a chance. You may end up liking it, or you may not—it really depends on your taste. My Rating: 7/10

Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch is a series I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys the magic school concept, as it successfully combines a fantastical atmosphere with a school setting. Spica, the main character of the story, is quite likable, and the relationship between her classmates and her black cat master is one of the series’ strongest aspects. In particular, I really enjoyed how the sweet rivalry between Spica and Aria developed from an irritating situation into an emotional bond. Although the story is generally predictable, the interactions between the characters keep you engaged without getting bored. The animation quality of the series is also quite good. Overall, Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch is a successful and enjoyable series that fans of the genre should give a chance, thanks to its warm character relationships, fantastical world, and entertaining school atmosphere. Rather than relying on a grand and complex story, it is one of those productions that wins you over through its characters and atmosphere.
